A Note from the President

The Memory of Water was an excellent production, which was praised by both audiences and critics. Congratulations and thanks are due to the Director, cast and crew, who overcame obstacles, which at the time seemed insurmountable, to achieve a wonderful result.

The final production for 2016 is well into rehearsal. The Fall & Rise of Mr Scrooge is a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol by Sue Sewell, an author from The Sunshine Coast. We are very pleased to be producing a work by a local writer and we hope that you will support us and her by coming along to what promises to be an entertaining evening. Our next year’s programme has been launched and we are looking forward to a successful 2017. If you want to be part of that success, why not come along to our A.G.M. You can tell us what improvements you would like to see or even nominate for the Committee.

Brenda White

Bah, humbug! One of Charles Dickens’ most enduring characters, that miserable miser Ebenezer Scrooge, is coming to New Farm in November in a musical version by Sunshine Coast author Sue Sewell and it promises to be a hit with everyone from 9 to 99.

All your favourites will be there. Be moved to tears by Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim. Be amazed by the ghosts; Jacob Marley rattling his chains, the ethereal wraith of Christmas Past, the jolly giant of Christmas Present and the foreboding figure of Christmas Yet to Come. Follow Scrooge on his journey through time and marvel at his transformation. The story is told with humour, with singing, with dancing and with love. It is just the thing to get you in the mood for the Christmas season so come along and enjoy the fun. Bring your family, bring your friends, bring your workmates and spread the word! You might even find yourself singing along with the carollers!

“The Memory of Water is one of those plays that is hard to pull off, yet Nash have done a commendable job in putting on this production and have provided another intimate and interesting night out at the theatre.” - Nahima Kern in The Creative Issue “…True, there were some snort out loud parts as the sisters resort to alcohol and drugs and some very bad fashion choices while they try to organize and survive the funeral. But it was the poignancy which will stick with me, the

rawness and the honesty.” – Susan Hetherington 612ABC Brisbane

The Nash Profile

Here’s a chance to learn more about Stuart Crisp, the Musical Director of The Fall and Rise of Mr Scrooge. We also consider him to be a Nash Treasure!

Why Brisbane? Why Nash? The Brisbane part is easy. I met my wife, Colleen, in England in the early 1980s and she was from Brisbane. I decided to emigrate and since she was coming home to Brisbane, that’s where I came too. I must admit that given the choice, I’d have chosen it anyway. Who wouldn’t? Given the choice between the warm subtropics and the grey, bleak and wet midlands of England. The Nash part is easy too. Like most people, I have done a number of shows around town with the usual theatre group suspects (The Arts, Beenleigh Theatre Group, Phoenix, Act One etc.) and bumped into Sandra Harman a couple of times. She was having problems getting music done for a Nash musical version of Sweeney Todd and called to see it I could help. I did, and have directed and played for musical plays as required ever since.

Your first experience of theatre? I was studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama from the late 1970s and saw a poster (you know the sort: with the pull-off phone numbers along the bottom) on the common room notice board. It was asking if anyone would like to play for odd sessions for musicals and promised payment. I took one and rang the number. The conversation went something like: Me: “Hi. I’m Stuart and I’m a violist…” Impresario: “Whoa! Stop right there, you play the viola? And can sight read? And will turn up to a booking?” Me: “Yep.” Impresario: “You want to come and play Camelot at Wimbledon Theatre tonight?” Me: “Yep.” That was it. I loved the show, loved the experience and before long was playing for shows all over London’s West End; mostly at Her Majesty’s in Haymarket. When I graduated, I played full time until going back to Northamptonshire, meeting Colleen and subsequently coming to Australia.

As our ‘Music Man’ what is your vision for possible future shows for Nash? Nash wasn’t known for musical theatre in the past as it focussed on plays almost exclusively but after Sweeney Todd it seemed that there was support in the audience community for adding a musical dimension to shows. This lead to experimenting with some plays with music in the current season (Rebecca, a radio play with underscored music and The Tempest with a recreation of the original music from Shakespeare’s first run seasons of the play) and finally to the first full musical (The Fall and Rise of Mr Scrooge which opens November 19th). For the 2017 season, the Committee has decided to continue to stage musicals with the classic Le Cage Aux Folles, complete with its superb Jerry Hermann score. This is a show that will stretch the talent base available to Nash (as it would any amateur or semi-pro group), but I think it is very much a step in the right direction. This show has been on my personal bucket-list for years and I’m very proud to be named Musical Director for this production.

As for the future; I think offering musicals should continue for Nash, maybe returning to some classic Lerner and Loewe (Gigi or Camelot perhaps) or Rodgers and Hammerstein (Oklahoma!, The King and I, Carousel or South Pacific perhaps). I’m thinking of any of the great musical theatre classics from the 1940s and 1950s. There is a wealth of musical talent available to Nash; we should give those people a platform to surprise and delight us into the future.

Obviously, theatre is important to you, but what are your other interests? Until recently, I worked during the day as a computer scientist. That was paying the bills but not interesting me much anymore, so I decided it was time to give my love for fine art a chance. I have been drawing people and their pets for around 16 years now and decided now is the time to try it full time, professionally. Since I just made the change, I’ll let you all know how it goes… I was brought up on a dairy farm and watched my mother and grandmother make a lot of cheese. I wasn’t allowed to help back then, but have always wanted to try myself. Recently I found a Brisbane company that supplies the cultures required and have been making my own cheese in small batches at home. Most people who taste it are surprised (in a good way) and I haven’t caused any medical emergencies yet. Otherwise, I really enjoy playing the piano and it is not unusual for our family to gather around and spend a night singing, with or without visitors; all sorts of genres are covered, depending on our mood but there’s usually a bunch of musical theatre numbers in there.

My idea of a perfect day? My wife and I taking our Indian motorcycle for a ride through the Gold Coast Hinterlands on a balmy, warm summer’s day, stopping off for a pie and coffee at Canungra and finally back to Brisbane. Then into the city for a show - it may be one I play in, Colleen sings in or we simply watch. Yes, that would do very nicely.
