And the findings of the report would probably fillthe average citizen with amazement that anybody everachieves any success at all in the ono scene.

Blundering inefficiency rears its head at every turn,affecting the smallest to the most important groups. Fewseem to know how to manage a group properly and mostgroups need as much managing AS a bunch of lunaticapes loose in a kyak. And they need a lot of managing.

Artists regard the tumbling incompetence of theirhighly -paid manager, agent and publicist with a mixtureof tolerance and contempt.

I remember one grouo who were booked out for a

fortnight of gigs in Pans On arrival they found nogigs. nobody had ever heard of them, and their " hotel "booked by their manager proved to be a brothel.

We had a great rime." said one of the group later.

GLITTERING

Managements spend months and vast auantities ofmoney attempting to bust the chart with their groupby fair means or foul. Often when glittering success

comes, by then crass and insensitive behaviour, oftenclogging the group to death, the group cracks up andyearns for release. money or no money.

It's all very well looking uoon Rockin' I. Hernia asmoney -making machine or the juice -head who lays thegolden discs. But there comm the point where after beingbooked three gigs a night far six nights a week, evenRockin' I. Hernia feels the time has come to scream

Some groups are booked out by managers who don'tmen help them get van, reliable equipment or clothes

that don't look as if they were found in a WardourStreet dustbin.

The groups arrive at gigs (sometimes) looking and

sounding dreadful. probably being " turned -over " by

both ballroom manager and their own manager. `Turned-orer " is a euphemism for being robbed.

Cloth -headed inadequacy is also rife in the field of

publicity. There are some excellent and brilliant publicists,

III of whom buy drinks.But there are some publicists who telephone journalists

and say brightly, ' What's the news?" Dry rejoinders

along the lines of: " I was rather hoping You would tell

me," tall on deaf ears.

SCOOPS

Blithering publicists promise scoops on the bleak up

of an important group to eager tournalists who then go

home, only to read the whole story in the current ism.

a musical note of any description.

their 10(11 club and never achieve anything hem ant

re.r to the nettjournalists too are the biggest collection of boring,

tatentloss, lumbering drop-auts ever to plague the earth,

Massing on everybody they ever get on sneaking terms
