Suborbital Program • The Venus Spectral Rocket Experiment (VeSpR) – PI: J. Clarke
– Purpose: To study the present day escape of water from the atmosphere of Venus and relate it to the past abundance of water on Venus
– Successful launch on November 27, 2013 • Balloon opportuniFes:
Venera-‐D JSDT: Background • On December 2013 a bilateral dialogue took place
between IKI and NASA/PSD. It was agreed to have a Joint Science DefiniFon Team for Venera-‐D
• On December 2013 NASA released a Le#er for Applica.on call for the Venera-‐D JSDT
• On January 2014, NASA received 39 applicants. • On February 2014, NASA and IKI jointly selected 5 USA
members for JSDT. • On March 4, 2014 a Venera-‐D JSDT Kick-‐off video-‐com
took place • Four “face-‐to-‐face” meeFng have being scheduled
• The JSDT will provide guidance on research objecFves to be pursued by Roscosmos/IKI and NASA's future science flight missions for Venus including: -‐ Science objecFves -‐ Develop an operaFons concept -‐ Mission design architectures & spacecrai concept -‐ Science instrument conceptual payload & traceability matrix -‐ IdenFficaFon of any required new technology
• Goals, objecFves, & invesFgaFons for Venus ExploraFon – should be an important input for the JSDT to consider
VENERA-‐D JSDT MEMBERSHIP
Other OpportuniFes – open discussion
• Next Discovery AO • Other missions: Solar Probe – Recently passed KDP-‐C – approved for implementaFon
– SP has 7 Venus flybys – current plan is to keep instruments off
– We are in internal dialogue with Heliophysics to explore science opFons

Planetary Science Budget FY15
• FY15 budget includes an addi.onal SMD funding: – $15M for competed EPO acFviFes – $187.3M in the Opportunity, Growth, and Security IniFaFve
10
Opportunity, Growth, and Security IniFaFve (Planetary Science PorFon)
• Planetary Science Extended Mission Funding: Provide an addiFonal $35M to increase support for extended missions prioriFzed in the upcoming 2014 Senior Review
• Radioisotope Power Systems: Make available an addiFonal $15M to manage technology development of SFrling power converters for future power systems for planetary or human exploraFon
• Research and Analysis: Provide an addiFonal $20M to expand support for Research & Analysis programs that analyze data from science missions and develop new theories and concepts that enable the next generaFon of flight missions. This investment represents about a 2.3% increase over the requested level for all competed research, across all Science Themes.
