ii The current Carlton

Riverina Football League premiers Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong last Sunday toppled from the top rung of the 1985 premiership ladder and a desperate struggle is about to commence for

this season's minor premiership title. The Lion's place as the·competition front

runner has been taken up by the Coolamon Grasshoppers, who were able to score a comfortable win at the expense of the Lions last Sunday to move into the leader's role.

With Ariah Park-Mirrool's loss to Griffith, the final four may now be set with Coolamon, Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong, Narrandera and the Wagga Tigers likely to continue playing through to September.

Hans Heystraton's Bomber's will stage a last ditch stand today to try and force a passage back toward the final four when they played host to the Tigers, but even the most ardent Bomber supporters will realise that the task at hand will not be an easy one.

The Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong Lions also realise the threat off ailing even further down the ladder when they travel to Wagga to play Turvey Park.

With two successive losses, confidence in the Lion's den has slipped and to add to the problems the side is without several key players due to injury.

The Bulldogs position on the ladder is nothing brilliant itself, but Turvey Park are bound to lift, as they always do, when confronted by GanmainGrong Grong-Matong.

In another anticipated feature clash, Coolamon will be looking to stay on top of the ladder and to add to their already impressive winning sequence when they play at home against Narrandera.

Narrandera is one of only two sides to have defeated the Grasshoppers, handing them out a huge "hiding" in the first round encounter.

The other side to have performed that feat, Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong were given their replay last Sunday and Coolamon coach, Neil Fleming, will undoubtedly have some special reminders of his team's first round thrashing to "Gup" the side for today's confrontation.

It certainly wasn't the Lions day at Coolamon last week as they also tasted defeat in the Second XVIII . .. for the first time since winning the flag last September.

The Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong Under 19's side remains the only undefeated combination in all grades throughout the league. They have . recorded twelve wins and a draw in the thirteen rounds so far decided.

◄ COVER: But where is the, ball? From left: Coolamon's Andrew Pattison, Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong's Greg Menzies, Glenn Carroll of the Hoppers and Lions' Rodney Crouch are all chasing in last Sunday's RFL match at Kindra Park, Coolamon.

With the return or a few play• ers from injurv the Stars took the field with their mo~t settled line up for weeks and got away to a magnificent start, at one stage leaaing by 8 goals. With all the Stars playing like men possessed it seemed a case of how far, bu1 to their credit Leeton came back Mrongly and the second half showing not much between the two sides. The win should do wonders for team morale and we should see a (ew more wins before the seasons end. Rod McDermott award winner.1 were Brian Rayment, Michael Davies, Shaun Quade, Kevin Williams and Paul McClimock.

The Reserves put in just about their best effort for the season and with an ounce of ·luck could have won. Don't leave that form at home fella's, a repeat dose of 1hat and you'll have a win. Bowl• ing Club award winners were Dennis Carroll, Wayne Tucker, Paul Horan, Paul Passlow and David Kclhcar.

Althoupi well beaten on the scoreboard the Under 19 s were certainly not disgraced. It makes it a lot easier when you help each other boys and if you put it togerher for four quarten; instead of two, a win won't be far away. London Hotel Award winners were David Currie, Murray Fos-

. ter, Phillip Durham, Kent Lally and Jarrod Cox. Today we take on the Hawks and the visit to

Gumly has been quite profitable for the Stars in the pa.st and there's no reason why can't put together two wins on end ... is there?

The U19s started the day off on the right note for the Redlegs at Ardlethan with a good team effort to dull the Stars and win very comfortably. The Bolton Pest of the Week was split between Peter Celi

RE~~"Jo~~½?Rs and James Plunkett with other good performances coming from

James Seymour, Graham Armstrong and Andrew Soley.

The 2nd XVIII, after bolting away from the Stars, nearly let it slip but fought back in the last quarter and got home by a mere three points. Thankyou to Graham Armstrong, James Plunkett, Steve Roe and Phill Mason for doubling up from the 19s. David Lang won the Wades Pharmacy Brute of the Week and was closely followed by Glen Heath, Garry Whymark, Graham Armstrong and Brian McKellar.

The Seniors lost it in one quarter once again, or should I say the first 20 minutes of the second quarter, where the Stars kicked 7 goals before we could score and that's where the difference lied for the remainder of the game. Also inaccuracy in front of goal was a contributor to the result, 14.14 (28 shots) to 18.10 (28) equal shots but 20 points difference. Good performers were turned in by Boofa (B.O.G.), Greg Cattel, Dave Meline, Steve Turner, Graham Henman and Barry Lang. Lloyd Pilkington Shirt award winner was Greg Cattel.

This week we welcome the Swans to the Showground, so let's singe a few feathers.

Don't forget the Rock 'n' Roll night next Saturday in our Clubrooms. $10 will get you in the door and includes tea and Disco. Represhments available at the bar.

~ The day may have been d;smal,

damp and bitterly cold but the results in the two main games warmed the

.

cockles of the heart like a swig of firey rum. The battles began on a sour note when several of the selected players in the Thirds didn't bother to front which

GREEN, WHITE v put an impossible burden on the rest, A pretty poor effort that, Neverthe

less those who played battled bravely against overwh;lming odds and were far from disgraced. Popeye Tilyard, (Danny Farrell's protegy) who's starting to look like he's just swallowed a hot air balloon, threw his not inconsiderable frame lustily threw the packs while Pat Sutton had a boomer of a game on the ball .

The great surprize was the tremendous victory by the Seconds who played with the fanatical desperation of Stumpy ·and Chocka in a nightclub packed with love hungry females, and this paved the way for the seniors later on. Moonie Armstrong, who had actually dreamed that he'd win the pewter displayed the blistering pace and acrobatic skills expected from such a slender, lithe, supple and finely tuned athlete to kick six match winning goals . There we are Moon, I don't necessarily have to mention that vast mound of flesh of yours.

The Dinner for Two was won by Garry Kew whose handling skills of late (with .only one good arm) have been as sure as a Moscow circus juggler while 'Fosters' Farrell with those rotund little legs pumping like pistons ran the ball out of the backline with all the zest of a freshly scrubbed Mallee bull .

The odds about Coolamon winning eight games on the trot and achieving undisputed top spot a~ter those two early annihilations were about the Crown Jewells to a Woolworths bangle. Yet a combination of persistency and dedication has enabled us to reap the rewards. Against the Lions, revenge was sweet but we must not lose sight of the fact that there is a long way to go and the big games are still in front of us.

Our team continued their excellent form from previous weks to completely outclass an inex- · perienced East Wagga-Kooringal team. We dominated BLUE, GOLD v the match after half time because we were first to the loose ball and use it effectively.

A ward winners were brothers Rus and John Durnan, Ian Bloomfield and Mark Quilter.

The Reserves kept alive their faint hopes of contesting the final series with a determined win. They took control of the match after half time and were never headed. Award winners were Darren Sibraa, Steve Gehringer and Neil Siebel.

Today it's Coolamon, a big test for our team. We will be able to guage our chances by their performance and if they are a premiership threat. . We will have to become consistent four quarter performers and not one quarter wonders if we wish to defeat good teams.

UP THE IMPS!

liiiliiiili!i~~'j m:1:1■llllllii1lllilillllllllllllll,i ''.iliil What a bleak, miserable day's

football. Our football coincided with the day. The First Grade was a debacle, from playing premiership style of football one week to schoolboys style thge

GRi~~~~iM, next. Where as Griffith handled GOLD LETTERING the slippery ball to perefection,

we fumbled and slipped our way around the ground. The pressure is really on us now, but every supporter knows that you are capable of being there in September. Good players were hard to find, but Glen Bell put in for the hard ball all day, Joe Box in his return to the club; Ross McKenzie who has a big pair of boots to fill at fullback but is doing it well; Tom Jones and Geoff Fairman.

The Seconds hung in till half time, but weakened in the second half. A big thank you to the Third Qraders who doubled up and done a good job. Good players were Steve Maguire, Warrigal, Brian Prentile and Tony O'Bryan.

The Third Graders once again battled it out against a very tall Griffith side, but never gave in. Best players were Brett Prentice, Brian Prentice, Brian Gordon and Brian Gayner.

rhis week it's the Tigers, so lets start our climb back to the four and beat the flag favourites.

In a day of mixed fortunes for the club, Turvey took on the Tigers at Robertson Oval. In the main game, Tigers got the jump in the first charge , to lead 7 goals to to points. From that point on the game became a mad scramble. The Milton's Gear votes went to Hawkie on 8 votes, with Greg Tooze polling 7.

Hawkie also won the Mug from the Hill Family and put it to good use.

In the Reserves game, Wagga jumped our boys again 18.16.124 to 5.4.34. It was a disappointing result as, along with all grades next week we.play the league leaders. Steve Roest won the mug donated by Melbourne Tractor Spares and Dave Butler scored the votes in the ACI award.

The 3rds defeated Wagga hansomely 13.17.95 to 3 .3.21. The socks and towel awards donated by Mr and Mrs Nye were won by Johnna Donohue and D . Brambly respectively, while the Mullins Award was taken out by Wally Shaw.

A big congratulations are due to Stewie, Mattie Gale, Chris Masterson and Stapo on their Carroll Cup finals performance at Robertson Oval last Tuesday. The boys are up and comers in the club, and all show great promise.

Let's get our heads down and ar-- up this week and come home winners!!!

We flayed one quarter of good footbal and the balance was a pretty poor effort against the Greens. Bernard Winter showed them all how to do it winning the Sports Club Award from brother Mick with David Carroll winning the Broilers Cup from Phil BLUE s~'b°uLDERS, ha tty . The Miltons Gear A ward votes GOLD CREST went: 3 Mick Winter, 2 Brendan Car-roll, 1 Bernard Winter , making Mick Winter and Dennis Walsh joint leaders on 13 votes each.

The Reserves, although having ten out injured in first and reserves, put in a shocker to lose their unbeaten title . Mark Russell won the Bowling Club Award with Barry Walsh winning the Social Club Pewter.

Once again the Under 19s had an easy win, but face their big test against the Bulldogs today. Anthony Corbett won the 4 Hotels award from David Cox and Paul Richardson .

Players 100 Club winner was Russ Smith. The Silver Circle Draw 10 went to: 342 H. Murrell, 327 Coke Ryan, 288 Glen & Maree Evans, and 72 Mrs. Rose Manglesdorf.

All ladies (and lasses) are reminded that there is an Auxiliary Meeting on Thursday, August 1 at 2.30 p.m. to discuss arrangements for the Show catering. The Social Clubs games night last Friday was a great success with the large crowd really enjoying the novelty night . The next function of the Social Club is on Sunday, August 4 with a do in the Ganmain Hall in aid of Miss Wagga entrant Fiona Carroll, featuring the popular band 'Plastered Ducks'. Entry fee only $5 for what promises to be a great night. . This week the Bulldogs and a win is a must to stop up m the top two.

Sheedy (Vic).

Coolamon notes continued from page 6:

P!cki~g the better players was as difficult as putting a straight Jacket on an octopus as there were so many fine contributors. Nevertheless Steve (Burger) Pattison, who has superceeded the old. models Tangles, Neil, Brett and Keysey as the current school girls pin up (he has. ~ven had offers from Cosmopolitan) coi:itinued his exc1tmgflay, streaming down the field speanng 60 yard passes o Nth degree accuracy. The recipient of most of those passes was Big Wow McLaughlin whose second quarter was absolutely sensational. Seven beautiful goals in one quarter from the big fella who has fitted into the club as compatibly as strawberries and cream. The third award went to Andrew Pattison who strangely has neve~ been (like Burger) a pin up boy but whose hardness 1s legendary. He ripped in for the ball with all the gusto of.a thirsty miser at a free keg and initiated more devastatmg attacks than Ghenis Khan.

This week we play Narrandera who have been our nemesis over the past two seasons. We must begin to redress the balance and today is as good an opportunity as ever.

VCFL MARKETING GREAT FOR FOOTBALL

Despite problems which have affected its overall success, the VCFL marketing program has been proved very successful and provided numerous benefits for country football this year.

The program has provided funds for the proposed visit by VFL senior: umpire Glenn James to various country areas in 1986 and the distribution of trophies to all VCFL Leagues to be awarded to the best player afield in major grand finals this year.

Although some small clubs feel they have not received any immediate advantages from the VCFL's marketing program, with the introduction of programs such as these it will eventually benefit all country clubs.

VCFL Secretary Mark Patterson has been liasing with VFL Director of Umpiring Bill Deller and Glenn James in regard to Glenn's tour of country areas in February and march next year. Areas he does not manage to cover will be visited the following

yegienn will be involved in visiting schools and umpiring groups as well as liasing with the media in an effort to promote what is a vital part of our game · umpiring in country areas.

Problems which have affected the effective intro· duction of VCFL marketed guernseys and shorts include the quality, supply and delay in delivery of guernseys.

However in response to problems which various clubs have brought to their attention, members of the VCFL Promotion and Development Committee

have met with representatives of retailers Polworth and Florgale to ensure that they will not re-occur next year.

It is important for clubs to complete order forms as soon as possible after the completion of their finals series so as they will receive guernseys and shorts much earlier and eliminate problems which occurred this year.

A further scheme which will benefit all country clubs if they support it in a united way is the VCFL insurance program which was introduced last year.

The VCFL Standing Committee have proposed that a special grant to be determined be made to those clubs which have supported the insurance scheme. This proposal will be finalised in September and illustrates that the VCFL is concerned about football at the grass roots level.

Finally, the· VCFL is also considering the need for computers in country football, a move which is consistent with our efforts to stay up-to-date with current trends.

A survey has been distributed seeking comment on the proposal that any club/league purchasing computer hardware should purchase a brand which is IBM compatible so that the VCFL can develop an appropriate software package which will be made available to all clubs and leagues.

If this idea receives support a standard program could then be produced and circulated at a much reduced cost.

I TOOHEYS FARRER FOOTBALL LEAGUE EDITORIAL

Last year at the R. D. F. L. Division one Grand Final the inaugral Footballer's Sprint was held at the · half time interval and won by the "heavily backed" David Jones

from the Junee-Kapooka Club. Rumour has it that Jones is no longer in

the Junee-Kapooka ranks, so the way is open for another footballer to win the title of The Farrer League's fastest footballer -an honour that is no doubt argued about amongst football followers.

Again this year the League will stage The Farrer League Footballlers' Sprint.

All the clubs in Division One and Two are asked to nominate a speedster to represent them in the event which will be held at half time of the Division• One 'Grand Final at Maher Oval on Saturday, September 14th.

Again, to ensure the success of the venture it is compulsory that all clubs, other, than the two actually playing in the Divi-

sion One Grand Final, nominate entrants. Of course this does not deny the Grand Final clubs the right to enter sprinters .

Farrer League sponsors, Tooheys, have availed handsome cash prizes for the first three place-getters in the race. So the event will be well worth contesting.

Doubtless, many League followers have their favourite; no doubt, many of the footballers would also rate themselves a chance to win.

Competitors must wear their club gue_rnsey and shorts but are free to choose tf]eir footwear. ,

Get to it clubs - pick your fastest and enter them in the Footballers' Sprint. Should be a top race.

One special mention this week to a certain coach who was seen giving away beers that he couldn't drink to the opposition players on Saturday night. We don't know if it was a tactical ploy or he was too drunk to drink them.

This week we play The Rock, so let's show them our last victory against them was no fluke.

MARRAR - PHONE 27 4302 Hardware & Pasture Seeds Member Combined Rural Traders

Last week saw us make the long trek out to Barellan and found the opposition too good in both grades.

The Firsts played to the best of their ability but with eight regulars watching on the sideline and two BLACK, others off the ground at quarter RED SASH

time found the opposition too strong. Rocky had an enormous game and was a real inspiration to all. Not bad after not having had a home cooked meal for over a week, speaks volumes for the take-away shops at Rannock. Danny and Butters also played leading roles while Neil Turner continues his excellent form.

The 2nds with nearly all Under 19s playing were beaten but not disgraced. Their first goal was a gem. The youth, speed and enthusiasm of Brett Robinson, Andrew McKelvie and Craig Whitmore brought the ball around the wing and passed it onto the cool steady hands of veteran one Robert McCormack who kicked the first goal of his career. Well done Bob! Growler and Brett shared the mug so the pewter had a pretty busy night.

The 19s are a real shining light at the moment and a few are starting to show up in first grade.

Don't forget the big 'Tarmak' revival ball next Saturday, August 3. Dance to the mellow sounds of that once famous band that laid down their guitars a few years back and took up farming for a living. Is cockcying that bad? ... or is rock 'n' roll coming back in? ... and will there be a generation gap on Saturday? To find out, be there! Should be a great night.

Let's hope we can roll Tcmora today, I need some good news to write.

~ With our leagues first two rounds

completed and the four game split round starting today we find ourselves in fourth spot on the ladder, only one and a half games clear. Not quite the best spot to be in, although we are looking forward to the challenge of

RED, WHITE v finals football. Last Saturday, as predicted, presented us with good

football. Although the U19s game was one-sided and went MCU's way, the later games where a lot more evenly contested, but with MCU winning both games again.

Better players where rewarded as follows lsts: Meyers Transport Mug to 'Cat'; Way?e S!e~en~ the Nardies award. The Crossroads Plonk to GIily and that up and corning older star Col Jaeo';'s the ~oxanne Beauty Shop mark of the day. 2nds: Lewmgto~ s Seed & Fertiliser 'Lip Lubricator' to 'Tubby'; Nard1es award (now he can take his Mrs out to tea, he's got two free passes) to 'Starsky' and Steve McPherson the Crossroads Plonk; .Mark of the day to 'Tubby' and nobody knows how a Beauty Shop like the 'Roxanne' could possibly help him (where would the_y start?) .. U19s: Wagga Picture Frames 'Pot' to Domomc Trevask1s. Ken Cox the Club award and Paul Williams the Crossroads award.

Those of us who attended the special event at the pub last week were pleased with 'Maca da Cleana' enter~ainment, and we thank him and his colleagues for the nights fun.

This week S. W.T. and although the records show that the First & Second Grade should register wins, the Ul 9s really need to all put together and bring home th<: points.

Maybe the publisher of our Football Record wdl make good their 'small' mistake at the bottom of our notes last week (I didn't sign the. notes 'Goanna' - they must have)

■ Not a lot to be said about last

Saturday's game, other than that it must be terribly frustrating for Uranquinty to get such hidings week after week. On the credit side

BLACK. of things it was the ideal opportun-YELLow SASH ity to 'blood' some of our younger

players into First Grade and I must say that those fellows all performed as we hoped they might. Congratulations to all concerned.

Scott Young grabbed the chance and provided plenty of desperation on the wing. If only this lad can keep up that attitude, a regular first grade spot won't be far away. Peter Blattman showed plenty of endeavour in the forward line and was rewarded with a couple of fine goals. Well done Pete! Both Marcus Rourke and Jimmy Bradley made the most of their Jimited opportunities in the back1ine and will obviously benefit from the run. .

Of the regular First Grades Ron 'Buggsy' Gordon bounced back to some good form and deservedly took out the major weekly award. Ron seemed to appreciate the set position and responded accordingly. Garry Knagge turned in another great game and for his efforts came away with the other award.

With regular full forward Ralph Robins 'missing' for the day coach Jammie 'pulled rank' to slot into that position and kicked 16 goals. I don't suppose we can complain about that.

This week it's Boree Creek again and because of their win over Rivcoll last game their confidence will be at a high. I just hope we can dent that confidence a little.

The old saying stood in good stead - the side that makes the least mistakes will normally win.

With the Firsts fighting back with true guts and determination from a

RED. WHITE & five goals deficit to be three goals BLUE up at the last change, the Bulldogs

only had to keep the same pressure on their opponents to win the four points, but someone must have put silly water into our drinks at three-quarter time because after the first five minutes we made every mistake possible in the book to let the Coota hoys in for some easy goals and eventually the game.

With the side depleted through injury and players unavailable because of work, it was still a fine effort.

Players who gave us their all were: R. Reed, a rugged game in the centre all day; J. Reynolds C.H.F., back to his best game; C. Selby and G. Lang did all the hard work around the ground while on the backline D. Morris, A. Lang and C. Fairbank were not disgraced with some fine individual efforts.

The forwards had someone to kick to all day with S. May firing at F.F. while M. Spencer in flashes also was a fine contributor. But sadly, that was not enough.

Award winners 1st XVII were: R. Reed 21; J. Reynolds 18; L. Selby 17; M. Edson 6; D. Morriss 6; G. Lang 2; M. Spencer 2; S. May 2; A. Lang 1.

Apologies again from the local "Scribe". Due to work commitments I was away so unfortunately I cannot comment on the game last week.

Suffice to say Whitton again proved their superiority over the GREEN, RED v battling Rosellas, but it was pleas-ing to note Quinty's score was much improved from the last encounter.

Today we again travel to Junee to meet the Bulldogs. The last time we met they were on the rebound from a shock loss and alas, it's the same today, having been beaten by Coota last week. Uranquinty could be called a sounding board for losers, as we seem to cop the top teams in a vicious mood, looking for revenge after shock defeats.

The Bulldogs certainly will be trying to prove they are final contenders, while Quinty will be in there just trying, as usual, which should make for a good game of football.

Congratulations to Peter and Wendy Jack on the birth of another footballer (Wendy had it, not Peter) although judging by the celebrations after the event, you'd think Peter had. Let's hope we soon see the youngster at training.

It was said around the club re- ■· cently that you don't have to be a : . . . . . . . . to coach a football team. Perhaps with the mental attitude of . the players during the week and on Saturday one would have been forgiven for writing the Blues off at three quarter time. Not so, with the words of their coach still ringing in

NAVY BLUE, WHITE CREST

their ears they produced a magnificent last quarter comeback that stirred the hearts of our supporters.

It was perhaps Chook, Fish and the Delaney Bros. who were inspuational in the last quarter but it was the likes of Ken (Captain Caveman) Willouhby (mammoth four quarter effort), Leon Reid, Dennis Bradbury, Benny (who burrowed in like a little rat) and Sooty who shadowed the oppposition all day who put us in a position to win the match. For those who heard them, the vicious rumours that Peter smiled on Saturday night were completely unfounded.

The Reserves with the greatest incentive in life to win the match (yes a keg) produced a great performance. Held together by Howie and Mark Noonan in the backline and ballgetters Rod Boo!, Mickey Mouse Gaynor and Michael Morton, a victory was never in doubt.

First spot is now there for the taking for the Re-serves but for the Seniors percentage will be the difference between second and third. So we must start to win our games by as much as possible. It starts today against the boys from RAAF.
