    1. Narayana Dasa Rules.

This dasa is the hallmark of the Jaimini Sutras and is in theauthors opinion the best for all predictive purposes. This Dasacan also be extended to divisional charts.

Note: The term aspect used through out this document refers toSign aspect or Rasi Dristi only.

    1.1 Dasa Progression.

    1. Consider Lagna and 7th sign from it.Take the stronger sign(Refer to the section on ComparingStrengths).

    2. Start dasas from that sign.Based on whether the 9th from that sign is odd-footed or even-footed, dasas will progress in:

Zodiacal (Ar, Ta, Ge, Cn ... Pi) order.Anti-Zodiacal (Pi, Aq, Cp, Sg ... Ar) order.

See chart below. The houses where the dotted lines passare ODD_FOOTED(Ar, Ta, Ge, Li, Sc, Sg), the rest are EVEN-FOOTED.

    3. Based on the initiating sign, use one of the 3 progressions:

    1. If the initiating sign is moveable (chara), progression isregular.

Ar (Zodiacal) : Ar, Ta, Ge, Cn, Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg, Cp,Aq, Pi.

Cn (Anti-Zodiacal) : Cn, Ge, Ta, Ar, Pi, Aq, Cp, Sg, Sc, Li,Vi, Le.

    2. If the initiating sign is fixed (sthira), progression isevery 6th sign.

Le (Zodiacal) : Le, Cp, Ge, Sc, Ar, Vi, Aq, Cn, Sg,Ta,Li, Pi.

Ta (Anti-Zodiacal) : Ta, Sg, Cn, Aq, Vi, Ar, Sc, Ge, Cp,Le,Pi, Li.

    3. If the initiating sign is dual (dwiswabhava), progressionis 5th, 9th, 10th etc (i.e. finish trines and move to thenext set of trines).

Vi (forward) : Vi, Cp, Ta, Ge, Li, Aq, Pi, Cn, Sc, Sg, Ar,Le.

Ta (backward) : Ge, Aq, Li, Vi, Ta, Cp, Sg, Le, Ar, Pi, Sc,Cn.

    1.2 Year-Count of the Signs.

    1. Count from dasa sign to dasa sign's lord. In the case ofScorpio and Aquarius, take the stronger of two lords(Refer tothe section on Comparison of Strengths).

    2. If the dasa sign is odd-footed count forward, and countbackward if it is even-footed.

    3. If lord is in that sign itself, it is 12 years.Do not go to step 4.

    4. Subtract 1 year from it.

    Examples:

Ar dasa is of 2, 6, 10 and 12 years if Mars is in Ge, Li, (Cpor Aq) & Ar respectively.

    6

Le dasa is of 2, 6, 9 and 12 years if Sun is in Ge, Aq,Sc andLe respectively.

    5. If lord is debilitated, subtract 1 year and add 1 year iflord is exalted.

NOTE: Mercury's exaltation. It counts just as own house, hence Mercury in Virgo will get 12 years.

If Sun is in Ar, Le dasa is of 5 years. If Sun is inLi, Le dasa is of 9 years.

If Jupiter is in Cn, Sg dasa is of 8 years andPi dasa is of 9 years.

If Jupiter is in Cp, Sg dasa is of 0 years and Pidasa is of 1 year.

After dasas of all the 12 signs are over, start thesecond cycle(Refer to section on Cycles in Narayana Dasa).

    1.3 Cycles in Narayana Dasa.

Once the First Cycle of Narayana Dasa finishes, i.e. when onestarts with the initiating sign and reaches the sign in the 12Hto it, the Second Cycle starts.

The Second Cycle follows the same progression as the first cyclewith one exception, that being, the Year-Count.

The Year-Count of a sign in the second cycle is given by theformula: ( 12 - (Year-Count in First Cycle) ).

If a sign gets 0yrs in first cycle, then it gets all 12yrs in thesecond cycle.

Example:If we have "Ar: 4yrs, Ta: 2yrs, Ge: 11yrs etc" in thefirst cycle, second cycle will be "Ar: 8yrs, Ta: 10yrs, Ge:1yretc".

Ju in Cp. Sg gets 0yrs in first cycle and 12yrs in thesecond one.

    1.4 AntaraDasa Progression.

    1. Find the stronger of dasa sign and the 7th from it(Refer tothe section on Comparison of Strengths).

    2. Take the lord of that sign. See the rasi occupied by him.Start antardasas from there.

    3. If it is an odd sign, go forward. If it is an even sign, gobackward. In either case, go in the regular order.

Examples:Leo (forward) - Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg etc.

Taurus (backward) - Ta, Ar, Pi, Aq, Cp etc

All 12 antardasas are of equal duration. So if dasa is of nyears, all antardasas will be of n months.

    [Note: 1 year=12 months, 1 month=30 days, 1 day=1 degree motionof Sun]

    1.5 Comparing Strengths.

    1.5.1 Comparing the strengths of Rahu/Saturnand Ketu/Mars.

    1. If Ju aspects/conjuncts the Nodes, it causes its fall, and Ma/Sa automatically become the lords. Why?

SANJAYJIS ANSWER:When we talk of exaltation of the nodes, we should try tounderstand as to what is happening. Rahu exaltation is likeRavana the ten headed one where the heads refuse to diehaving partaken amrita. Now, Jupiter aspecting these nodesis going to intervene in their affairs and will not allowthe exaltation to continue, just like Rama intervened inthe affairs of Ravana. The net result is Ramayana i.e. the nodes fall. Thus thisexception maybe noted "Jupiter aspecting the nodes willmakethem weak and cause their fall".

    2. First see if one lord is in that sign. If so, other lord isexample, if Saturn is in Aquarius, then invariably Rahu shouldbe taken as its lord.

    3. If one of the above houses is with a larger number of planets, then he is stronger.

    4. "SWAAMI GURUJNA DRIGYOGAHA". If one of them is aspected bymore out of Jupiter, Mercury and its Dispositor, then he isstronger. These carry equal weight.

Example :Lets assume that we are considering Le & Aq(1/7).

Lets also assume that Le is aspected by Ju & Aq by Me, andtheir lords do not aspect their respective signs. Thenthere is a tie.

When looking for the aspect of lord/dispositor, you cansettle for aspect from either lord, but you have to usethe stronger lord in all other rules.

    5. If one of them is exalted, then he is stronger (opposite fordebilitation).

    10

    6. One occupying a sign of higher natural strength is stronger.Dual > Fixed > Movable.

    7. One giving more years is stronger.

    8. A sign whose lord is more advanced in longitude from thebeginning of its sign is stronger.

Note: Rahu and Ketu's advancement should be measured from theend of sign rather than beginning. Hence Rahu/Ketu'sactual advancement will be (30-longitude).

1.5.2 Comparing the strengths of 1/7 houses.

    1. If one of the above houses is with a larger number of planets, then he is stronger.

    2. "SWAAMI GURUJNA DRIGYOGAHA". If one of them is aspected bymore out of Jupiter, Mercury and Dispositor, then he isstronger. These carry equal weight. When looking for theaspect of lord/dispositor, you can settle for aspect fromeither lord(Rh/Sa for Aq & Ke/Ma for Sc), but you have to usethe stronger lord in all other rules.

Example : Lets assume that we are considering Le & Aq(1/7).Lets also assume that Le is aspected by Ju & Aq byMe, and their lords donot aspect their respectiveSigns. Then there is a tie.

    3. A sign with its lord in a sign with a different oddity

    4. A sign whose lord is more advanced in longitude from thebeginning of its sign is stronger. Rahu and Ketu's advancementshould be measured from the end of sign rather than beginning.

    1.6 Exceptions.

    1. Presence of Saturn/Ketu in the stronger of (1/7 houses) willmodify dasa/antardasa sequence. Saturn makes it go Zodiacally& Ketu reverses it, no matter what. Most importantly for thisexception to work Saturn/Ketu has to be in STRONGER OF 1/7houses.

Note : The house winning the 1/7 battle and initiating thedasa/antaradasa cycle has to have the above mentioned planets. This has to be kept in mind specially for antaradasa, wherethe cycle is initiated from the sign occupied by the winner of1/7 battle.

Example : Le/Aq are fighting it out for anatardasa sequence.say, Le wins, & Su is in Ar, then Sequence is Ar, Ta,Ge ...etc, but if Ketu were to be present in Le, thensequence, would be Ar, Pi, Aq etc. Even if Ketu wereto be in Ar with Su, then it would progress as Ar,Ta, Ge in regular order.

    2. Supposing Saturn and Ketu occupy the same sign.Answer : Check which one of these stronger using the rulesstated above. Experiment with it.

    3. One year is deducted only if the debilitated planet is takenas the lord. If you take Ketu as the lord and find dasa yearsbased on Ketu, exaltation or debilitation of Mars no longermatters.(Of course, you have to add/subtract one year fromAries dasa, because Mars is its only lord.)

    3. If Ju aspects/conjuncts(Rasi dristi only) the Nodes, it causesits fall, and Ma/Sa automatically become the lords.

    3. Examples

    3.1 Family Problems using D2.

    DEFINITION: PARIVRITTI DWAYA HORA CHART

Planets and mathematical points (lagna, special lagnas etc) inthe first 15 degrees of Aries go into Aries in this chart.Planets in the second 15 degrees of Aries go into Taurus.

Planets in the first 15 degrees of Taurus go into Gemini. Planetsin the second 15 degrees of Taurus go into Cancer.

Planets in the first 15 degrees of Gemini go into Leo. Planets inthesecond 15 degrees of Gemini go into Virgo.

Planets in the first 15 degrees of Cancer go into Libra. Planetsin thesecond 15 degrees of Cancer go into Scorpio.

And so on. When the zodiac is completed, we go around it againfor asecond cycle. This is why it is called "Paricritti Dwaya"(bicyclical)Hora chart. I will refer to it as "PD Hora" chart or "D-2 (PD)".USE OF P.D. HORA CHART

This chart is used for timing certain aspects of health andfamily affirs. Marital life of a native can be seen from D-9.Relations with siblings can be seen from D-3.Relations with children can be seen from D-7.

But how do we see relations within the family and happiness orpressures from family affirs? These matters falls outside thejurisdiction of D-9, D-3, D-7 etc. In some cases, tensions infamily can even ruin a native'shealth.

All these matters are seen very well in "D-2 (PD)". Narayana dasaworksparticularly well for timing events using this chart. This willbeclarified further through examples in the next few weeks.

Note: This chart should NOT be used for money matters as somepeople are attempting to do. For money matters, there is anotherversion of hora chart.

    EXAMPLE 1

Who: Late N.T. Rama Rao (known as "NTR", superstar and demigod ofTelugu language films in India, very popular and worshipped forhis portrayal of the mythological characters of Lord Rama andLord Krishna, an egomaniac, a prominent national political leaderand maverick, chiefminister of AP state in India during 1980s and 1990s).

Birthdata: 28th May 1923, 4:43 pm (IST), 81e00, 16n25.PD Hora chart: Lagna, Moon, Jupiter & Venus in Ta; Sun & Mercuryin Ge;Mars in Le; Rahu & Ketu in Cp; Saturn in Pi.

Event: During late 1994 and 1995, there was unbearable tension inhisfamily. At an age of 71, he married a married woman, whounceremoniously divorced her husband to marry NTR. NTR returnedas the chief minister of AP after the marriage and his new wifestarted to exert a lot of influence in government and partyaffairs. His sons and son-in-law(s?) were opposed to this. Theytold him to put her in her place and tell her to keep away frompolitics and governance. NTR didn't listen and this led to revoltin the family. Humiliated by her a few times, his son-in-lawfinally split his party with the help of his eldest son and somedissidents and they toppled NTR's government. Totally shocked bythis betrayal (by his own son and son-in-law!), NTR fell sick andlater died. (Note: His son-in-law has been the chief minister ofAP since then.)

All this happened in 1994-1995 timeframe. NTR finally died inearly 1996.

Explanation: Calculate D-2 Narayana dasa with "PD Hora chart". Inrasichart, 2nd lord is Ketu (not Mars). He is in Cp in D-2 (PD). Dasasequence normally is Cp, Sg, Sc, Li etc.

Because of Ketu's presence in Cp, it is Cp, Aq, Pi, Ar, Ta etchere. Rahu & Ketu are stronger than Saturn & Mars (respectively). After one cycle of all the 12 dasas, second cycle of Cp dasa runsfrom 27th May 1994 to 27th May 1996. This was the dasa thatrocked the peace in his family. Why is Cp dasa bad?

Because Rahu and Ketu afflict Cp!! Also, 4th from dasa rasi isAries and its lord is in 8th from dasa rasi, showing lack ofdomestic harmony

  • OM JAYA JAGANNATHA

    17

(4th). Arudha lagna (taking dasa rasi Cp as lagna) is in a signwith 3benefics, suggesting actions by the native that appear soft-natured.

However, Rahu and Ketu in lagna suggest meanness in reality(lagna isthe seat of truth and arudha lagna is the seat of illusion).Sixth fromdasa rasi has Mercury in own house and Sun. This showsintelligentenemies in family.

Gnati pada (arudha pada of 6th) has Saturn and so his enemies maycome across as selfish people. In any case, gnati pada from Cp isin a sign with 44 ashtakavarga bindus and his enemies within thefamily won because of it. If gnatipada from any sign has 44bindus, one has to be very very very careful with enemies duringthe dasa of that sign (enemies relating to the matter signifiedby the chart).

Even if you cannot follow all this logic, just the presence ofnodes inCp is enough to suggest some trouble in family. Ketu owns 7th andRahuowns 10th and the trouble may be due to weird and maverick(nodes)actions related to career (10th) and marriage (7th).

Note: If you find D-9 Narayana dasa for the same period, you willfindthat NTR had happiness from wife. When he got married, he ran thedasaof 8th from upapada (arudha pada of 12th) and dasa of a Venusiansigncontaining upapada and 7th lord ran when he remained hen-peckedandinvited the betrayal.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,Narasimha

    3.2 Vehicular Accident Using D-16.

From: Narasimha Rao Date: Sun Sep 19, 1999 10:50pmSubject: [vedic-astrology] Another Narayana dasa example

    Namaste friends,

Because many questions asked on Narayana dasa recently, I willgiveanother detailed example of Narayana dasa computation.

Birthdata: 4th April 1970, 5:50 pm (IST: 5:30E), 81e12, 16n15Event data: 5th December 1996, 6:45 pm (EST: 5:00W), 71w12, 42n30Event: Vehicular accident in which vehicle was totalled (i.e.insurance company found it cheaper to give a new car than torepair the car)

For vehicles, Parasara recommeded looking at D-16. Here lagna inrasi chart is Virgo.

D-16 here: Mercury, Rahu & Ketu in Ta; Mars in Ge; Lagna in Cn;Venus in Le; Jupiter in Vi; Sun & Moon in Sc;Saturn in Sg.

Let us compute D-16 Narayana dasa and see if the event makessense using the principles explained before. Especially, let uslook at prana-antardasa and test my varga transit principle.

    DASA SEQUENCE:

"Shodasamsa (D-16) Narayana dasa" starts from the sign occupiedin D-16 by 4th lord in rasi chart (because 4 is the remainderwhen 16 is divided by 12). Here Virgo is lagna in rasi chart andJupiter is 4th lord. He is in Vi in D-16. So dasas start from thestronger of Vi and 7th from it (i.e.,Pi). Because Pi has noplanets and Vi has one planet, Vi is stronger. Vi starts dasas.

Vi is a dual sign and so the progression is "every 5th". Ta is9th from Vi and it is an odd-footed sign (odd-footed signs areAr, Ta, Ge, Li, Sc and Sg). So the direction is "zodiacal".

Dasas go as Vi, Cp, Ta, Ge, Li, Aq, Pi, Cn, Sc, Sg, Ar, Le.

    2001 Vedic Astrology List - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vedic-astrology

Warning: You cannot reproduce any parts of this article, without written permission from the author(s) mentioned herein.

    19

    DASA DURATIONS:

Vi is even-footed. Count backwards. Mercury is in Ta, i.e. 5thfrom Vi. We get 5-1=4 years. 1970-74.Cp is even-footed. Count backwards. Saturn is in Sg, i.e. 2ndfrom Cp. We get 2-1=1 years. 1974-75.Ta is odd-footed. Count forward. Venus is in Le, i.e. 4th fromTa. We get 4-1=3 years. 1975-78.Ge is odd-footed. Count forward. Mercury is in Ta, i.e. 12th fromGe. We get 12-1=11 years. 1978-89.Li is odd-footed. Count forward. Venus is in Le, i.e. 11th fromLi. We get 11-1=10 years. 1989-99.

    DASA DIVISIONS:

Dividing periods into 12 equal sub-periods, you can findantardasas (AD), pratyantardasas (PD), sookshma-antardasas (SD),prana-antardasas (PAD) in this mahadasa. Just remember to useSun's longitude as a measure of time and divide periods equallyin terms of Sun's longitude change.

Or open my rasi dasa division program. Enter birthdata, eventdata, 10 years under "length of dasa", 1989 under "dasa startedin year" and select "find sub-periods upto 6th level at the dateand time given below".

    The output is:

    Given MD - 10th AD - 3rd PD - 5th SD - 7th PAD - 5th DAD

Now let us find what all these stand for.

    AD:

MD is Li. We have to find the stronger of Li and the 7th from it(Ar). Neither is occupied. Look at rasi aspects/conjuncts fromMercury, Jupiter and lord. Jupiter aspects/conjuncts neithersign. Mercury aspects only Li. Lord Venus aspects Li, but lordMars doesn't aspect Ar. So the count is zero for Ar and two forLi. Li is stronger. Start from Venus. He is in Le, an odd sign.So the progression is "regular zodiacal". Antardasas go as Le,Vi, Li etc. The 10th AD is Ta.

    PD:

AD is Ta. Find the stronger of Ta and Sc. Ta with 3 planets isstronger than Sc with 2 planets. Lord Venus is in Le, an oddsign. Antardasas should normally go as Le, Vi, Li etc.

    20

However, Ketu is in Taurus (dasa sign). So the exception "Ketohvipareetam" applies and the order is reversed. So PDs go as Le,Cn, Ge, Ta etc. The 3rd PD is Ge.

    SD (sookshma dasa):

PD is Ge. Find the stronger of Ge and Sg. Both have one planetseach. Look for aspects/conjuncts (or occupancy) from lord,Jupiter and Mercury. Ge is aspected by only Jupiter. Sg isaspected by Jupiter and its lord (Jupiter again). Its count oftwo beats Ge's count of one. So Sg is stronger. Sg initiated sub-periods. Look at the sign containing Sg's lord. Jupiter is inVirgo. Virgo is an even sign and the order should normally be Vi,Le, Cn, Ge etc. However, here Saturn occupies Sg. So theexception "Sanou chetyeke" applies and the direction becomeszodiacal. So SDs go as Vi, Li, Sc, Sg etc. The 5th SD is Cp.

    PAD (prana dasa):

SD is Cp. Find the stronger of Cp and Cn. Neither is occupied.Look for aspects/conjuncts from Mercury, Jupiter and lord.Jupiter aspects neither. Mercury aspects both. Lord Saturndoesn't aspect Cp, but lord Moon aspects Cn from Sc. So Cn isstronger (count of 2 as opposed to 1 of Cp).

Start sub-periods from Moon, who is in Sc. Sc is an even sign andso the progression is anti-zodical. PADs are Sc, Li, Vi, Le etc.The 7th PAD is Ta.

So the prana-antardasa running at the time of the event is

Li MD - Ta AD - Ge PD - Cp SD - Ta PAD.

Libra is the 4th house. Its dasa shows happiness from vehicles. This native bought a 2-wheel vehicle and later a car in thisdasa. This dasa brought him happiness from vehicles. The eventunder focus was only an aberration in this otherwise good dasa.

AD is Ta. It is the 12th house from A4 (vahana pada, arudha padaof 4th - it represents vehicle). It has nodes. This antardasa isbad. It not only gave an accident, but forced him to buy a newcar at a bad muhurta. During the next 6 months (Ta's antardasastill), the new car received several damages in parking lots andthe native got rid of the "unlucky" car and bought another carwhen the next AD started. He has been happy with the new car.

Basically, being a dusthana from A4 and containing nodes makes Taa bad sign. Accidents, damages to the vehicle and change ofvehicle are possible then.

PD is Ge. It contains Mars, significator of accidents. Moreover,Mars owns 6th from A4. SD is Cp. It is the 8th house from A4 andits lord is in 7th from A4. It is a maraka sthana for the car.

Basically, Sc, Cp and Ta are dusthanas from A4 and they arelikely to be active when the car is damaged in an accident (note:this accident totally destroyed the car, but no individual hadany injury).

PAD is Ta. I said earlier that prana-antardasa should beinterpreted based on transits in vargas. Look at transits in D-16at that time. Taurus was occupied in D-16 at the time of theevent by Rahu and Ketu!! So the prana-antardasa was conducive toan accident.

When Narayana dasa is computed correctly, it will work upto verylow levels in a consistent fashion. However, the rules as Itaught you may not be final. Experiment and search for truth.

    3.3 Overseas travel using D4.

    Native's birthdata for reference:

    27th April 1971, 6:29 am (IST), 72e50, 18n58

In rasi, 4th lord is Moon. He is in Le in D-4. See the strongerof Le and Aq (7th from Le).

See the number of occupants. Le has one (Moon) and Aq also hasone (Jupiter). We have a tie.

See how many planets out of (a) Jupiter, (b) Mercury and (c) lordof the rasi, occupy or aspect/conjunct the rasi. The one with ahigher number is stronger. We have to use rasi aspects. Here Leis aspected by Mercury. Sun and Jupiter do NOT aspect it.

    Count is one.

Aq is occupied by Jupiter and aspected by Mercury and Rahu (oneof the two lords). So count is three. So Aq (3) is stronger thanLe (1).

So Aq starts dasas and NOT Le as you have taken. That's yourmistake and that cues everything.

    Dasas:Aq: 1 year (71-72)(Saturn is stronger than Rahu, being withanother planet)Cn: 11 years (72-83)Sg: 2 years (83-85)Ta: 1 year (85-86)Li: 8 years (86-94)Pi: 1 year (94-95)

As per my calculation, you started Pi-Li-Ar on 4th Jan 1995.

In Pi dasa (Apr 94-Apr 95), antardasas start from the stronger ofPi and Vi. Both have zero planets. Neither is occupied/aspectedby Jupiter or Mercury or its lord. Both are dual signs (and equalin natural strength). Both are even and lords are in odd signs (asign with lord in a sign of different oddity (odd/even) isstronger than a sign with lord in a sign of the same oddity).

Because we have a tie, we compare longitudes of Jupiter andMercury (lords of the two signs). Jupiter is more advanced and soPi is stronger than Vi. Its lord Jupiter is in Aq (in D-4). Soantardasas progress as Aq, Pi, Ar, Ta, Ge etc.

Libra antardasa runs from 26th Dec 1994 to 25th Jan 1995(approx).

In Li antardasa, pratyantardasas start from the stronger of Liand Ar (7th from Li). With 2 planets, Ar is stronger. Ar containsKetu and so the exception applies. Lord of Ar is Mars and he isin Cp, an even sign (so backward). Normally pratyantardasasshould be Cp, Sg, Sc, Li etc. However, Ketu's presence in Armeans we have to reverse the direction and so we get Cp, Aq, Pi,Ar etc.

Natal Sun is at 12Ar40. One-year Pi dasa started in April 1994when Sun reached 12Ar40 and lasts till Sun reaches 12Ar40 inApril 1995. Li antardasa (9th) runs when Sun is between 12Sg40and 12Cp40. Each pratyantardasa will last 30/12 degrees, i.e. 2.5degrees. So 4th antardasa (Ar) starts when Sun enters 20Sg10(12Sg40+3x2.5deg) and lasts 2.5 days. This corresponds to Jan 4-6, 1995.

So I wrote above that Pi-Li-Ar was running.

Apart from being a watery sign aspected by 9th and 12th, Pi isnot really a strong candidate. Jupiter is the lord of dasa signPi and his rasi transit in Sc (9th from Pi!) in Jan 1995 must'veplayed a role.

However, antardasa and pratyantardasa signs found above areindeed the two best candidates for giving foreign trip/residence.Libra's lord Venus is in 9th and more importantly Libra containsRahu (significator of foreign residence). Aries is 7th (longtrips) and it contains Ketu and 9th and 12th lord Mercury. Forforeign residence, 9th and 12th are very important. Clearly, Liand Ar are the two best candidates and the fact that they happento be the running antardasa and pratyantardasa signs on 4th Jan1995 demonstrates the efficacy of varga Narayana dasas.

I am glad that you chose to acknowledge it and did not attempt torationalize and somehow explain why Sc periods brought you to US.That's the spirit! When we don't find a nice explanation, weshould try to question the calculations and refine ourunderstanding of the methods. If we somehow try to explain knownfacts, we will not learn our mistakes.

Bear in mind: With a precise tool such as varga Narayana dasa atour disposal, we often don't have to settle for far-fetchedexplanations!

    3.4 Marriage using D9.

With discussions going on varga narayana dasa, I have a puzzlefor you.

    [ September 26,1974 7.34Am , TZ 5.5E,Place of birth: Machilipatnam, India ( 81e12, and 16n15).]

Can any one try to predict when the native got married? Narasimha:

I know that this native got married on March 4, 1999. At the timeof his wedding, Sun was at 19Aq44. Natal Sun was at 9Vi08.

Let us compute Narayana dasa now. For marriage, look at navamsa(D-9). In rasi chart, 9th lord is Mercury. He is in Sc in D-9.See the stronger of Sc and Ta. Sc has Mercury and Taurus isstronger with 2 planets - Saturn and Mars. So start from Taurus.Normally the sequence would've been Ta, Sg, Cn, Aq, Vi, Ar etc(backward progression of "every 6th"). But Saturn's presence inTaurus will make it go in forward and regular order. So dasasequence is Ta (74-81), Ge (81-86), Cn (86-90), Le (90-95) and Vi(95-2005), Li (2005-2007) etc.

Since Ge contains darapada (arudha pada of 7th, important forrelations) and it is the 7th from Venus, Ge dasa can give anaffair/attachment, but the native was too young then.Li dasa is a good candidate for giving wedding, but it comes toolate.Virgo is a good candidate too, because it is aspected byVenus and darapada. It is the moolatrikona of Mercury, who ownsthe 7th from Venus, Sun and Moon. He owns darapada. He is charadarakaraka (DK, variable significator of spouse). With Sun andMoon being together in Pisces (with Jupiter!), Sun lagna and Moonlagna are important. Overall Mercury is a very key planet here.So Virgo dasa gave marriage.

Now find antardasas. Since Pisces (7th from Virgo) is strongerthan Virgo (more occupants), take Pisces. Take its lord. He isJupiter. He will start antardasas. He is in Pisces itself. Sofirst antardasa belongs to Pisces. Since Pisces is an even sign, antardasas progress as Pi, Aq, Cp, Sg, Sc, Li etc (backward).

Each antardasa is of 10 months (because this dasa is for 10years). First antardasa starts around Sept 26, 1995. Scorpioantardasa is the 5th antardasa and it starts after 40 months (3years 4 months) from then. So it runs from Jan 26, 1999 till Nov26, 1999. This antardasa gave marriage. Scorpio is the 2nd houseand it contains Mercury, who is DK (chara dara karaka) and owns

    25

darapada, 7th from Venus, Moon and Sun. In addition, he isaspected by upapada. Overall, Mercury is a key planet. Being DKitself makes him a key planet.

Usually key planets, rasis and karakas decide dasa and antardasa, but deeper divisions like pratyantardasa and sookshma dasa belongto lagna or 7th or upapada. Let us find them now.Sc antardasa of 10 months runs when Sun is between 9Cp08 and9Sc08 (around Jan 26-Nov 26) in 1999. If we divide this into 12equal periods, 2nd division runs when Sun is between 4Aq08 to29Aq08. This gave marriage. Why?

Antardasa sign Sc is weaker than Ta, 7th from it. So take Ta.Take its lord Venus. He is in Sg. Start from Sg. Since Sg is odd(and since Saturn occupies Taurus), pratyantardasas go forward. They are Sg, Cp, Aq, Pi etc. Second pratyantardasa is Cp.Why did Cp give wedding? Apart from being 4th from lagna and 2ndfrom Venus, it is upapada!! Upapada, lagna and 7th are strongcandidates for pratyantardasa and sookshma dasa.

Now find sookshma dasas. Take pratyantardasa sign (Cp) and 7thfrom it (Cn). Both have one planet each. So the "occupant count"criterion of strength leaves a tie. Now look at sign aspects fromJupiter, Mercury and lord. Cp is aspected by lord Saturn andMercury. Cancer is aspected only by Mercury. So Cp is stronger.Take its lord Saturn. He is in Taurus. Start from Taurus. It isan even sign and go backward. Presence of Saturn in Taurusdoesn't activate the exception (if Saturn were in Cp, exceptionwould've been activated).

Sookshma dasas are Ta, Ar, Pi, Aq, Cp, Sg, Sc, Li, Vi etc. Lagnais Li and its sookshma dasa (8th) ran during Sun's transitbetween 18Aq43 and 20Aq48. This native got married during thissookshma dasa.

    LESSONS:

    1. DK is important for timing wedding. Some people may tend tocall these variable karakas as "Jaimini karakas", but the factis that Parasara also defined chara karakas. So I prefer tocall them chara karakas and *not* Jaimini karakas.

    2. Lagna and upapada are very important for precise timing , i.e.pratyantardasa and sookshma dasa.

    3. Navamsa Narayana dasa is very good for timing wedding andphases in marital life.

    CHALLENGE TO US:

There must be different rules to find dasa, antardasa, pratyantardasa, sookshma dasa etc at the time of an event, as pera fixed dasa system.

If the rules are the same for all levels and if sign x is themost important sign for an event, then why doesn't "x dasa, xantardasa, x pratyantardasa, x sookhma dasa" give the result?

We see that dasa, antardasa etc at the time of an event are notalways the same. This suggests that there are different rules fordifferent levels.

We can give an explanation based on the fact that no single dasaperhaps decides one's life and we have to mix several dasas andtransits.

But I feel that once there used to be different rules fordifferent levels of dasas and they are lost now.Only dedicated researches can find a solution to this problem....

THE IDEA BEING THAT CHANGES OF JOB ARE TYPICALLY GIVEN BY PLANETSASSOCIATED WITH 6TH, 8TH AND 12TH FROM A10 IN D-10. IF THEPLANETS AND SIGNS ASSOCIATED WITH DUSTHANAS FROM A10 AREASSOCIATED WITH GOOD HOUSES FROM ARUDHA LAGNA (AL, ONE'S STATUS),THEN A GOOD CHANGE OF JOB MAY BE EXPECTED.

IF THOSE PLANETS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH DUSTHANAS FROM AL ALSO, THENA FALL IN CAREER OR LOSS OF JOB MAY BE EXPECTED.

3.6 Color of ones vehicle using D16.

Recently there was a discussion on the color of one's car:

After seeing this exchange, I wanted to add my 2 cents. I willpresent MY approach, then present a complicated example (of aperson who bought and drove 4 cars within 3.5 years!) andillustrate MY approach. Others are welcome to explain the sameexample using their ayanamsas and dasas.

At the end, I am giving a puzzle which you can solve using thesame (or other) principles!!

    COLOR OF CAR: THEORY

Maharshi Parasara clearly explained that one's vehicles can beseen in shodasamsa (D-16) chart. The 4th house shows vehicles andcomforts.

Lagna is satya peetha (seat of truth) and arudha padas show themaya (illusion and perception) of this material world. Whetheryou are comfortable or not, whether you have a luxurious car ornot is a matter of "truth" and it may be seen from the 4th housein D-16.

But, whether you own a BMW car or a Hyundai car or a green car ora blue car is a matter of illusion in this material world.

What is true and what matters is whether you have theluxury/comfort of a vehicle or not. The color and brand of thevehicle etc are all illusions of this material world. They areseen from the arudha pada of 4th house (called "vahanapada" and denoted as A4).

From the influences on A4 in D-16, you can judge the primarycolor of one's car. However, the same person may drive differentcars in different periods and we can use Narayana dasa of D-16 tosee all of them.

Narayana dasa sign can be taken as lagna to see fortune duringdasa. Lagna always represents native (from the point of view ofcomforts). The 4th from lagna represents the comfort of avehicle. Its arudha pada shows one's car. An example may help youunderstand clearly.

Ar is blood-red, Ta is white, Ge is grass-green, Cn is pale red,Le is white/beige, Vi is gray/variegated, Li is black, Sc isreddish-brown, Sg is tawny, Cp is variegated, Aq is deep brown.

Based on the guna (nature) of signs, we can assign shades.

Sattwa guna signs (e.g. Cancer, Pisces, Sagittairus) indicatevery light and whitish shades.

Rajo guna signs (e.g. Aries, Libra and Scorpio) indicate dark(but bright/shiny) colors.

Tamo guna signs (e.g. Capricorn and Aquarius) indicate dark (anddull) colors.

Based on sign and planet influences on A4, we can get the color. In your black car example, my calculations put A4 in Libra whenyou bought car, do you remember?

It can indicate black color as Libra is black in color as perBPHS, though Venus (white) owns it. It depends on whether Libradominates or lord Venus or occupant Mercury.

Being a rajo guna sign occupied by a rajo guna planet (Mercury),it has to be shiny (and attractive) despite being dark. Some darkcolors are dull (tamo guna) and some dark colors are shiny andattractive (rajo guna).

You can mix influences, but give prominence to strongerinfluences.

Leo with Sun's argala may denote sunfire red. Gemini with Marsmay denote a shiny dark green color. If Mars is stronger thanGemini, it may even denote Maroon. Leo with Venus may denotewhite. Leo with Venus may even denote red if Sun and Mars haveargalas on it.Libra with Mercury may denote shiny black.Libra with Saturn may denote a dark and dull (i.e. not shiny)black.Libra with Jupiter may denote gray.Pisces with Ketu may show silver, Pisces with Jupiter may denotebeige and Pisces with Venus may denote clear white.

Try these, but looking at D-16 (chart of vehicles) and vahanapada is important. If we don't look at the right variables,Parasara's teachings will not work.

This native's D-16 has lagna in Cancer and 4th in Libra (see"details" above). Lord Venus is in 2nd, causing argala on Libra. So this native may have the comfort of good cars.

When will he acquire a car? Perhaps in Libra or Leo dasas! Whatif those dasas come too late in life? Well, we have to chooseanother comfort-giving dasa!

What may be the primary color of his vehicle?

Libra is 4th. Its lord Venus is in 11th from it. So arudha padaof 4th (A4, vahana pada) is in the 11th from Venus, i.e. Gemini. It has Mars. The color can be given by Mars (red) or by Gemini(dark green).

    NARAYANA DASA: COMPUTATION

Now, let us explain the colors of his four cars. For that, wehave to compute varga Narayana dasa of D-16.

Dividing 16 by 12, we get a remainder of 4. So take the 4th lordin rasi chart - Jupiter owns 4th from Virgo lagna. Take hisposition in D-16. He is in Virgo in D-16. See the stronger of 1stand 7th from there - Virgo and Pisces. Virgo is stronger withJupiter. So start dasas from Virgo.

From Virgo, 9th is Taurus - an odd-footed sign. So go forward.Because Virgo is a dual sign, progression is "every 5th". So thedasa sequence is Vi, Cp, Ta, Ge, Li, Aq, Pi, Cn, Sc, Sg, Ar, Le.Now find dasa years. Vi is even-footed and count backward to lordMercury. He is in 5th from Vi (Ta). So Vi is 4 years(1970-1974).

Then Cp dasa is for 1 year, i.e. 1974-1975 (even-footed sign, count backwards to Saturn in Sg, get 2).

Then Ta dasa is for 3 years, i.e. 1975-1978 (odd-footed sign, count forward to Venus in Leo, get 4).

Then Ge dasa is for 11 years, i.e. 1978-1989 (odd-footed sign, count forward to Mercury in Ta, get 12).

Then Li dasa is for 10 years, i.e. 1989-1999 (odd-footed sign, count forward to Venus in Le, get 11).

Let us divide the 10 years of Li dasa into 12 equal antardasas of10 months each. To find the sequence, see the stronger of Li andAr. Li is aspected by its lord Venus and Mercury and it is

stronger. Take its lord. He is Venus and he is in Leo. So startfrom Leo. Leo is an odd sign (NOT an odd-footed sign). So countforward.

Antardasa sequence is Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg, Cp, Aq, Pi, Ar, Ta, Geand Cn (10 months each).

You can easily verify that Ar, Ta, Ge and Cn antardasas in Libradasa were running at the time he bought the 4 cars respectively.

NARAYANA DASA AND VARIOUS CAR COLORS

All the 4 cars were bought in Libra dasa. Being the 4th housefrom lagna in D-16, Libra can certainly give vehicles. Now let usturn our attention to antardasas and explain various car colors.

    1. During Ar antardasa, Ar represents native (from the point ofview of vehicle and comforts, which are the focus of D-16). The4th house from there represents native's comforts from vehiclesand its arudha pada represents the vehicle. From Aries, 4th isCancer and Moon is in Sc - 5th from Cancer. So A4 (vahana pada)is in the 5th from Moon, i.e. Pisces. Pisces is owned by Jupiter, who aspects it powerfully from Virgo. Jupiter's color is lightyellow (color of the urine of cow) and beige color is close toit.

    2. During Ta antardasa, Ta represents native (from the point ofview of vehicle and comforts). Ta has Mercury and nodes! Presenceof nodes doesn't suggest a happy man. This antardasa started inOct 1996.

The native was indeed unlucky with cars in this antardasa. He hadan accident (nodes and Martian argala) with his first car (beigecolored car in 1) and the car was "totalled". Because of the lossof first car (during Ta antardasa), he was forced to buy thissecond car at a bad time (Mars-Saturn samasaptaka). This new carwas later hit several times by unknown people while it was parkedin parking lots, in different incidents. Because the nativedidn't know who hit the car in parking lot, he had to pay thedeductible if he wanted it repaired.

Wanting to get rid of this 'unlucky' car, the native sold thiscar, which was bought at a bad time, and bought a new car afterthe next antardasa started.

We have seen why and how he had poor luck with cars during thisantardasa. Now let us see why his second car, bought in Taantardasa, had maroon/red color.

From Ta lagna, 4th is Leo and vahana pada (A4) is in Scorpio. Ithas Sun and debilitated Moon. Sun and Scorpio can both denotered/maroon color!

    3. [Out of the four, this is the weakest logic] In Ge antardasa,4th is Vi and A4 is Cp. Cp has no planets in it. Its lord Saturngoverns blue or black and dark colors. Mercury aspects Cp withrasi drishti and causes argala on it. So he may have dominated. Moreover, he owns A4 w.r.t. natal lagna. In the absence ofstrong influences on A4 w.r.t. antardasa sign, we may take A4w.r.t. natal lagna.

For all these reasons, he bought a green car which has ahint/shade of blue.

    4. Cn is natal lagna. A4 from Cn is, as we havee already seen, inGe. Gemini usually suggests dark green. Because Gemini containsVenus in navamsa (D-9) and because Mars who occupies it in D-16is the 7th lord in navamsa, this mini-van is driven more often byhis wife than by him.

    Lesson:

Vimsottari dasa (of Moon or lagna or Sun) shows 'everything' inlife. Sometimes expecting an antardasa to reflect hundreddifferent things that happen during a year may be unrealistic.Narayana dasa of a divisional chart, on the other hand, focusseson very limited things. Narayana dasa of D-16, for example, showscomforts, luxuries and vehicles. So use varga Narayana dasas forfine and focussed analysis.

Finally please remember that no principle works always!! So don'tget carried away.

May Jupiters light shine on us,Narasimha

    3.7 Academic success using D24.

I take a time period during which Sun moves by 1 degree as a day.I suggest you should try this. In rasi dasas, this is the correctdefinition.

    1 year = 12 months1 month = 30 days1 day = 01 degree motion of Sun

Measure time in terms of Sun's motion.

If you go upto SD in many case studies, you will see that theabove method works better in more. Similarly, those who take 360dyears in nakshatra dasas should take one tithi and not a 24-hourperiod as a day. Again this make a big difference in sookshmadasas.

I will give another example. Consider my D-24 (chart oflearning).

    [ Birthdata : 4th April 1970, 5:50 pm (IST), 81e12, 16n15 ]

D-24 Chart: Lagna & Moon in Ge; Saturn in Le; Rahu & Ketu in Vi;Mercury in Li; Sun in Sc; Venus in Aq; Jupiter in Pi;Ma in Ta.

Events: Sometime during May 4-June 4, 1987, I had two academicsuccesses:

    1. I learnt from radio and news papers that I stood "state first"in my state with a record score of the decade and 300/300 inmathematics, my favorite subject.

    2. I was selected in a competitive exam for admission to IIT,India's top engineering institute(s).

I will help you upto PD and you have to identify the correct SD'sof the two events and also give the correct 24-hour periods.

    COMPUTATION:

In rasi, 12th lord is Sun (we are dealing with D-24 and 24thhouse means 12th house). He is in Sc in D-24.

Sc and Ta have one planet each. Sc is not occupied/aspected byany of Mercury, Jupiter & Ketu/Mars. Ta is aspected by Mercury. Its count of 1 beats Sc's count

of 0. So Ta starts dasas. Dasa sequence is Ta, Sg, Cn, Aq, Vietc.

    Ta is 10-1=9 yrs (70-79).Sg is 4-1=3 yrs (79-82).

Studied Sanskrit and passed 2 exams equivalent tobachelor's degree then. From Sg, 4th (learning) is Pisces andJupiter occupies it. So Sanskrit studies...

Cn is 2-1=1 yr (82-83).Aq is 6-1=5 yrs (83-88). Rahu is the stronger lord.Vi is 12-1=11 yrs (88-99). Vi is 4th and has nodes.

So formal education in electronics engineering then. Virgo meansmath. So specialized in a mathematical & algorithmic field calleddigital signal processing.

Anyway, the events happened in Aq dasa. Find antardasas.

    Aq and Le (7th from Aq) have one planet each. Mercury aspectsboth and Jupiter and lord don't aspect. Both are fixed signs.Their lords are in a sign with different oddity (Aq is odd andRahu is in even Virgo;

Le is odd and Sun is in even Scorpio). So tie again. Compare theadvancement of lords Rahu and Sun. Sun is more advanced. So Lewins out. Sun is in even Sc.

Antardasas should go as Sc,Li, Vi, Le etc. However, Le has Saturnand the exception applies. Antardasas go as Sc, Sg, Cp, Aq etc.

Each antardasa (AD) in Aq dasa (4/83-4/88) lasts 5 months.

    Sc: 04/83-09/83Sg: 09/83-02/84Cp: 02/84-07/84Aq: 07/84-12/84Pi: 12/84-05/85Ar: 05/85-10/85Ta: 10/85-03/86Ge: 03/86-08/86Cn: 08/86-01/87Le: 01/87-06/87

occupied by Saturn, who is the significator of fame and aspects5th. Saturn also owns arudha lagna (AL).

Success in competition is shown by 5th (Li). Its lord Venus isalready represented by Aq, but don't you think Li itself deservesa representation, as it also contains lagna lord Mercury (whoowns 5th from AL)? Yes, PD (next level division) happens to beLibra. Let us compute PD's in Le antardasa.

Because we have the same Le-Aq axis again, PDs will also be inthe same order. Libra's PD is the last. It is the last (5months/12)=12.5 days of Le's AD.

To get things right, let us convert to the degree domain now.Natal Sun is at 20Pi51. This is the position at the beginning ofAq dasa (in 4/83).

Each AD is 5 months and so Sun moves in each AD by i.e. 5x30=150degrees. After 9 AD's, i.e. at the beginning of Le AD (10th), hewill have advanced by 9x150=1350 deg, i.e. 270 deg (subtractmultiples of 360). So he is at 20Sg51 (which is 20Pi51+270deg) at the beginning of Le AD in 1/87. At the end of it in 6/87,Sun will be at (20Sg51+150 deg)=20Ta51.

So Le AD runs during Sun's transit between 20Sg51 and 20Ta51 in87. Now, dividing 150 deg of this AD into 12 parts, each part is12.5 degrees.

So the last PD in Le AD, i.e. Libra's PD, runs during Sun'stransit between 8Ta21 and 20Ta51.

Now the exercise to you is: divide these 12.5 degrees of Li PDinto 12 SD's.Identify the two SD's (sookshma dasas) that gave academic successin Aq-Le-Li pratyantardasa (e.g. Aq, Ar) and find the start andend longitudes of Sun identifying the SD's. Then go to a 1987ephemeris and find the approx period in IST time during which Sunis between these longitudes (e.g. 26th May 87 late morning to27th May 87 noon).

You can give upto 4 guesses and if the correct 2 answers areamong the 4 guesses you give, you will get, well, justcongratulations from me I suppose! :-)

Without any bias, search for the best 4 signs that can giveacademic success and reputation. Find the order of SD's (sookshmadasas) in Li's PD (pratyantardasa) and locate your 4 choicesthere. Carefully find start & end longitudes. Then reach out anephemeris. Good luck!

I just want to make a couple of points just based on the Narayanadasa of the natal chart (without going into Tajaka).

Here are pratyantardasas (PD) in the current antardasa as perdasamsa Narayana dasa: Narayana Dasa of D-10 chart (a generalpurpose phalita dasa):

[Note: The above calculations are based on a software programunder development. They divide Narayana dasa into sub-periodsusing Sun's longitude. So the calculations are accurate.]

There are many factors that help us in judging dasas, antardasasand pratyantardasas of Narayana dasa. The most important isthe commencement chart technique. For every period, draw thechart at its commencement and judge it. (Note: Use the longitudeand latitude of the birthplace irrespective of the place ofresidence at that time.)

    1. Taurus PD was running from Jan 14 to Feb 12. It commenced at9:15:45 am on Jan 14, 2001. Cast a chart for that time and findD-10. In that chart, Taurus (PD sign) has an exalted planet. Fromlagna, 10th lord Mars is very strong in 3rd and shows a bolddevelopment in career. Lagna is in Aq. Lagna lord Saturn in 12thshows some worry or tension, but he is strong and gives Vimalayoga.

    2. Next PD of Gemini was from Feb 12 to Mar 14. It commenced at10:17:52 pm on Feb 12, 2001. Cast a chart for that time and findD-10. In that chart, Gemini (PD sign) has debilitated Ketu.Sagittarius lagna is afflicted by debilitated Rahu. The 10th lordin D-10 is Mercury and he is retrograde, in deep infancy anddeeply combust.

This is consistent with setbacks in career,

    3. Next PD of Cancer was from Mar 14 to Apr 14. It commenced at7:19:11 pm on Mar 14, 2001. Cast a chart for that time and findD-10. In that chart, Cancer is lagna. The 10th house has 9th lordJupiter. The 10th lord Mars is exalted in 7th and aspects lagna. All these show fortunate developments in career. However, lagnalord Moon is not very strong. He is debilitated in rasi and inMrita avastha (dead state). He owns lagna in D-10. So it showsdiscomfort and some unhappiness. Nevertheless, the strength of10th ensured success in finding a job.

    4. Consider the PD of Virgo, which will run from May 15 to June15. It commenced at 12:51:12 am on May 15, 2001. Cast a chart forthat time and find D-10. All the quadrant lords in Aries lagnashow a dynamic new begiunning. Lagna lord Mars is exalted in 10thand it shows a new beginning that will be very favorable in thelong run. But Mars is retrograde and somewhat weak. So thebeginning may be shaky. But things should work out well.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,Narasimha
