They have all been buzzing about what a terrific time they had despite the cold and wet conditions, with a particular highlight being the surfing lessons they underwent on the first day. This important activity was made possible through Government funding made available to all Primary Schools for Grade Six students specifically for Water Safety education: The Swimming in Schools initiative is designed to increase opportunities for students to learn how to swim, and ensure they develop lifelong skills in water safety to reduce their risk of drowning and injury. (See Department of Education website: http://www.education.vic.gov.au) An integral part of their surfing lesson focused on identifying the dangers of swimming in the surf and looking for signs of rips and potential hazards. The children particularly enjoyed seeing their teachers in full wet suits and helmets! I would like to thank Jackie Hope, Ryan Marsland, Rod Wyatt and Sharon Lloyd for accompanying the children on camp. In all my years of teaching, (and there have been a few!!), attending camp is one of the most enjoyable experiences of teaching but also one that bears the greatest personal responsibility on staff as they take 24 hour care of the children away from home. The hours spent at camp are well in excess of teachers normal hours of duty and an inordinate time spent away from their own families and loved ones. Their willingness to attend camp for the benefit of the children in their care (voluntarily) shows what dedicated staff we have here at Nar Nar Goon! They certainly enjoyed their own warm beds, pillows and a comfortable nights sleep last night, as I am sure the children also did! SMILES ONSITE: Once again, the Smiles Onsite team have postponed their visit to our school. I do sincerely apologise for this and hope it has not caused any inconvenience. The postponement is due to scheduling issues related to the company - not anything to do with the school. You are welcome to speak to the team directly on 1800 276 453 or www.smilesonsite.com.au Best wishes Fran Van Lambaart PREP ENROLMENTS FOR 2019 If you have a sibling of a child already attending here who is starting their Prep year, or likewise, if you know of anyone who lives in the area (within our school boundary) and are thinking about enrolling their child for next year, enrolment packs are now available from the office. School Council News:

What age are your children? Their names and grade level? Jack is in 2/3 K, he is 7 years old. As a family, what do you like doing together and where do you like to spend your holidays? As a family, we like to go for bike rides together. We don’t have a particular spot we always go on holidays, but we particularly enjoyed visiting Adelaide earlier this year.

What is it about Nar Nar Goon Primary School that you and your family enjoy the most? We love the size of the school, and the friendly community spirit. From the moment Jack began in foundation, he was accepted in such a way that it is very hard not to like the school. How long have you been on School Council and why did you elect to go on

School Council?

This is my first year on School Council, I was apprehensive to elect due to feeling I may not be able to spare enough time. I hope that with my trade background, and

potential contacts I can bring a different perspective and knowledge to the council To date, what do you believe has been the most valuable actions of School Council since you have been a

councillor?

Being this is only my first year it is difficult to pinpoint any one action in particular. What advice would you give to someone considering electing for School Council in the future?

I feel that the role of a school councillor is really important. There is kind of an air that School Council is a bit cloak and daggers, nothing could be further from the truth. To be honest, none of us on the Council are any

different to anyone else. We’re not scary, nor are we anymore important. My best piece of advice would be to encourage anyone to put their hand up and join in. Do you have any other comments to make?

If anyone has a concern, or ideas to share with the rest of the school, come find one of us and let us know. We would like to include everyone at the school and your ideas are always welcomed.

As well as the usual coughs and colds there are also many cases of

gastro currently in the school. Gastroenteritis is highly contagious. Please keep students home who are

exhibiting any symptoms or are complaining of feeling

unwell.

A Reminder………………. That if you have changed your email address you will need to resubscribe to our Newsletter mailing list. You can do this via the link on our website.

Please note that it is an expectation that students who attend sporting events, representing our school, should remain at the event to support their team!

ATTENTION PARENTS We would respectfully ask that every person who comes onto the school grounds between the hours of 9:15am and 3:15pm does so through the main office to ensure that we know who is on the school grounds at all times. We would ask for your cooperation as parents to ensure that if you have a message for your child or an item that needs to be delivered to the classroom that you ask the office staff to pass it on rather than interrupt the class and/or the teacher during instruction time. Anyone without a WWCC lanyard or Visitors badge will be redirected to the front office.

You can then present your card to the school office so that details can be kept on file.

Your feedback is important to us. If you have a concern or would like to raise a complaint as a parent, please speak to the classroom teacher in the first instance, Team leader in the second instance (ie: F-1: Jodie Watt, Grade 2-3: Kimberly Feher, Grade 4-6: Jacqui Cutler). Sensory Garden at NNG PS Our School Council, the Leadership Team and the Staff at Nar Nar Goon have decided that the Fortune Garden will become a Sensory Garden. The idea is that the whole area will be designed and planted to draw students to experience the space and explore and play during recess and lunchtime; and can be . used as a withdrawal space for students who need time to regroup in classroom time. We envisage including design the layout features utilising the natural fall to create a dry creek bed, jetty, arbour, include the checker-board, seating and outdoor classroom space. We look forward to seeing the garden evolve as artworks are installed and the students make items to be included in the garden. The Sensory Garden will have plants and materials within the environment which engage the 5 senses including: seeing different plants, colours and movement, hearing different sounds as leaves rustle, plants move and musical instruments chime, touching different textures in the built area which range from smooth to rough, prickly to soft, smelling different scents given off by plants, leaves, soil and water and eventually tasting different native plants. If you can offer any expertise or materials, including a bobcat, etc to help us get this project started, please see Jacqui Cutler or Fran Van Lambaart
