Prior to 1800, Nappanee was home to the Miami andPotawatomi Indians. In 1830, the first white settlers came to the area and by

1870 there were seven farms in what is now Nappanee. Thepopulation was nearly 40.

The Coppes Family and Mutschler Brothers provided a wayto make a living . . . making cabinets and furniture. This hasled to Nappanee being known as the Kitchen Capital of theWorld!

In the last 140+ years, Nappanee has grown to house a diverse and progressive population of over 6,700.

For over 140 years, Nappanee has been synonymous witheverything gracious, desirable and enjoyable. We are a tradition you can return to. We invite you to sample the

varied charm of our city . . . a friendly city with strong civicpride.

Nappanee offersthe opportunity toexperience Amishculture. Living asimple, quiet life inthe country, mostof the men work ina factory, in con-struction or are inbusiness for themselves, while the women tend to dailyhousehold tasks. Horses can be seen pulling the machinery

that is used to tend the fieldsand transportation is pro-vided by horse-drawn bug-gies, bicycles or on foot. Infact, the Amish remain theprimary reason touriststravel to Nappanee.

The citizens of Nappa-nee make a concerted effortto respect and preserve the

Amish way of life while recog-nizing the enormous interest of its visitors.

We hope you will too!Merchants and townspeople wel-

come the first-time visitor and repeatvisitors to Nappanee with the same

hospitality they extend to their long-timeneighbors.

In Nappanee, parking is always free. Park your car next tothe buggies and shop andeat where the locals do.

Shopping Nappanee is asatisfying experience fromone end of the city to theother. Whether it’s handmade quilts, fine woodproducts, antiques or coun-try crafts that you wish tosee . . . Nappanee has it all!
