Principal’s Message
D ear Parents and Students,
Howquicklythefinalquarteroftheschoolyearhas arrived! While there is great anticipation about the excitingeventswhichcomeatthistimeofyear,therearestillplentyofsignificantlearningopportunitiesanddecisionsahead. While our underclassmen have already taken the
criticalfirststepofcourseselectionsfornextyear,manyofourseniorsarejustnowfinalizingplansforlifeafterNaplesHigh.Inaddition,weareallbeginningtheprocessoffinalpreparationsforabusyendofyeartestingseasonwhichwillconsumetheentiremonthofMayaswellasaseveraldaysinApril.Regardlessifitischoosingcourses,preparingforanexam,ormakingthechallengingfinaldecisiononposthighschoollife;we know that our students are prepared.
Testingseasonloomslargeoverthefinalquarteroftheschoolyear.Recentchangesto state statute have moved testing to later in the year which has created an abundance oftestinginthemonthofMay.AllofourstudentswillbeparticipatingintheFloridaStandardsAssessments,AdvancedPlacementexams,AICEtests,finalexams,andindustrycertificationperformancetasks.Theseassessmentswillbeusedtomeasurehowwellour students are learning state and industry standards while also providing the opportunitytoearnvaluablecollegecredit.Inthecomingweekswewillbesureto communicate that a comprehensive testing schedule is on our school website.Pleasebesuretoconsultthiscalendarasmanyoftheexamsdonotoffermake-updates.

From the Desk of the Assistant Principal for Curriculum Our2018-2019 school year isquicklyending.Now is the time tomake sure thestudentsfinishstrong.Withonlyafewweekstogo,remindyourstudentstokeepupwiththeirdailyassignments,turnintheirwork,and/oraskforhelp.Itisextremelyeasytogetcomplacentandforgetaboutquartertheirfourgrades.Don’tforget,westillhaveteachersthatassiststudentsduringlunch.Ourtutoringscheduleisasfollows:Monday,Math(2-214Ms.Jacob),Tuesday,English(11-215Ms.O’Leary),Wednesday,Science(5-119Ms.D’Arco),Thursday,Math(2-114Mr.Bruland),andFriday,English(11-212Ms.Krapf).Studentsshouldtakeadvantageoftheselastopportunitiespriortothetesting“season.”
NaplesHighSchool’sstatemandatedtestingwillbeginonMay1andwillbecompletedbyMay29.Itisimportantthatstudentsbeinschoolduringthistime.Notonlyisthistheofficialtestingtimelineforstatetests,wealsoneedtoadministerAPtests,AICE/Cambridgetests,seniorfinalexams,andunderclassfinalexams.Themakeupwindowisextremely short.

TheNaplesHighSchoolPromwillbe held atTheNaples BeachHotelandGolfClubonSaturday,April27,2019 from 7:00 PM until 11:00 PM.Prom tickets cost $85.00 each andwill include dinner and dancing at The NaplesBeachHotelandGolfClub---oneofthepremiereresortvenuesinsouthFlorida.

ProjectGraduationisadistrict-widesafeandfungraduationpartyforallgraduatingseniorsinCollierCounty.TheeventisheldannuallyattheYMCAofthePalmsonPineRidgeRoadongraduationnight(May24,2019)from11pm-4am.Thegraduateswillhaveaccesstofreefoodanddrinks,ahypnotist,lasertag,karaoke,jousting,mechanicalbullride,dancingwithmusicprovidedbyaDJ,andsomuchmore.Manyprizedrawingswillalsotakeplacethroughoutthe evening.The admission toProjectGraduation is $20 and includes theProjectGraduationT-Shirtwhichwillbesoldattheschooloncewegetcloserto the event date.
ProjectGraduationissupportedbyhundredsofvolunteersanddonorseachyear. Join us in keeping this Collier County tradition alive with your generous contributionortangiblegiftforthismuch-anticipatedannualevent.

The Latest from the Office of Student Relations
We are in the finalweeks of another fantastic year here atNaplesHigh.TheAttendanceandDisciplineOfficeisexcitedtoreportnumerousaccomplishments made by our students this year, both behavioral and academic.Positivereferralsareuponceagainthisyear.Ourstudentshavereceived29%morepositivereferralscomparedtolastyearandweareproudofthegreatstridestheyaremakingintheclassroomandaroundcampus.
Additionally, once againwe recognized our studentswho receivedPerfectAttendanceAwards.Allstudentswhoachievedperfectattendancefor 3rd quarterwere recognized and given their certificateswhenwereturnedfromspringbreak.Aswecontinuetotrendintherightdirectionin regards to attendance,wehave seen an increaseof .3% inourdailyattendance compared to this time last year and it is in part to those students. Thankyoutotheparentsandfamilymemberswhohelptogetourstudentsto school on time each and every day.
Please remember that in order to purchase tickets to prom, all obligationsmustbepaid in full prior to thepurchaseof the ticket.Weencourage students to pay their obligations sooner rather than later and to not wait until the week that tickets go on sale. Automated calls have beensentoutifyourstudenthasanobligationandtheycancheckwithMrs.Gatisintheattendanceofficetoseeiftheyhaveabalance.Temporarybadgestickersareonastudent’sobligationandwehavequiteafewstudentswhoowemoneybecauseofthesestickers.WeacceptchecksorcashonlyforobligationsandallcheckscanbemadepayabletoNaplesHighSchool.
Lessthantenweeksseparateourstudentsfromsummervacationandweencourageeveryonetofinishtheyearstrongandtocontinuethepositivetrendsweseeoncampus.NaplesHighSchoolcontinuestogrowbothinsizeandsuccessandweknowthatourstudentswillcompletetheyearasstrongastheybegan.Wewanttothanktheparentsandfamilymembersofourstudentswhosupporttheschoolandtheirchild’seducation.

Alleviate Test Stress: Plan, Don’t CramBy Adam J Weikel
TestingseasonisuponusonceagainatNaplesHighSchool.Formanystudents,thisalsocomeswithanoverwhelmingsenseofanxiety.Fearoffailure,lackofpreparation,orapoortestinghistoryaresomeofthefactorsthatcontributetoanxiety.Asateacher,Iseetheanxietythattheseexamsbringsomestudentsandthepressurethattheyputonthemselvestoperformwell.Overtheyears,Ihaverecommendedtwostrategiesthatstudentscanfollowtoalleviatestressasthetestingseasonapproaches;thefirststrategyistoplan,thesecondstrategyisnottocram.
Planningforthetestingseasoninvolvessettingasidetimetostudyforupcomingexamsandtests.Byplanningtheirstudytime,studentscanloweranxietylevelsandprioritizestudyingforteststhataregoingtobemoredemanding.Ialsorecommendthatstudentsplangroupstudysessions,which will allow them to gain additional knowledge and cover more material.
Crammingfortestshaslongbeenastrategythatstudentshaveused.However,testingstudieshaveshownthatcrammingfortestsnotonlyincreasesanxietybutalsolowersperformance.Thebestthingthatstudentscando,thenightbeforeanexam,istogetplentyofsleep.

It’sspringandtheflowersareblooming, thegrass isgreener, the sun is shinier and theNaplesHigh Schooltheatre isperforming themusical 13!PerformanceswilltakeplaceonApril11,April12andApril13at7:00pm.Weinviteyoutocomeonamusicaljourneyfilledwithfun,laughterandtheuncomfortablenessofbeing13yearsold.13isamusicalwrittenbyDanElishandRobertHornwithmusicandlyricsbyJasonRobertBrown.Themusicalfollows13yearoldEvanGoldman,whomovesfromNewYorktoIndiana,inthemiddleofplanninghisBarMitzvah.Hehastonavigatethecomplicationsofmoving,makingnewfriendsandhisparent’sdivorce.Wehopeyouandyourfamilywillbeabletojoinusonourfunadventure.Ticketswillgoonsaleaweekbeforetheshowandmayalsobepurchasedontheeveningoftheperformancesstartingat6:30pm,adultsfor$10andstudentsfor$4.Breakalegeveryoneandseeyou on the stage!
