THE ITALIAN FOCAL POINT FOR NANOTECHNOLOGIES AND KEY ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES 2
About us
AIRI Profile• Founded in 1974, based in Rome• Focal point for some 100 members active in R&I (large
companies, SMEs, public research)
AIRI/Nanotec IT profile• Created in 2003 as a branch of AIRI • Focal point for the key Italian players
in nanotech and other Key Enabling Technologies
International networking, participation to European and National cooperative projects, promotion of Responsible Research and Innovation ( RRI) are amongst its main duties.
Mission: Sustain industrial research and innovation
to enhance the competitive position of the Country

Some examples from the NanotechItaly Conference
Origin: www.nanotechitaly.it– 2009-2013 editions
A leader industry in packaging equipments (food and other industries) and a university start up:Developed a reel to reel (RtoR) processes for printing RFID devices directly on packaging (ink jet printing, based on NM conductive and insulating inks)
A leader industry in packaging and a SME in nanotech:Developed multifunctional tag combinig anti-counterfeit hologram and time-temperature integrator (records exposure to temperature above thresold) based on nanostructured materials
Example of Italian industry using nanomaterials in the food packaging area
A SME producing bottles and an University:Nanocomposite materials to improve gas-barrier properties and shelf life of PET bottles
THE ITALIAN FOCAL POINT FOR NANOTECHNOLOGIES AND KEY ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES 12
• Still early stage of development, small market volume materials • Good basic/applied research base, in particular on nanomaterials & polymers• All major research institutions involved • Increasing industrial commitment • Activity in key sectors of applications and leading companies (e.g ICT&
Electronics, Transport, Pharma & Bio)• Potential for innovation in typical Made in Italy, including food and food
packaging• Nano-related products surfacing on the market
CONCLUSIONS
• Responsible Research and Innovation is mandatory fo r their success
Developing innovative outreach and dialogue on responsible nanotechnologies in EU civil society
Engaging with:policy-makers, researchers,industry, studentsand education institutes,civil society, consumers,trade unions
Survey on RRI and students competions to start soon (also Italian language)
