POLICIES
School Uniform
All students are required to purchase and wear the school uniform. These must be worn at
all times unless other instructions are given (example: field trips, special activity
days). Layers may be worn underneath the uniform in cold weather. Extra
jackets/cardigans/sweaters/vests that are not part of the uniform should not be worn,
except for coming and going to school. Our classrooms have both heat and air (in the rare
case of a power outage, exceptions will be made). Leggings and stockings in neutral colors
or with simple prints would be the best options to pair for girls’ uniform.
Please be aware of your child’s class schedule. They should only wear the P.E. uniform on
days that they have this class. Demerits will be given to students who do not wear the
appropriate uniform.
Please be reminded that Primary students are not allowed to wear flashy or expensive
jewelry and accessories to school. Simplicity in one’s appearance is highly encouraged.
Polished nails are not allowed as well.
Attendance
All Primary students should come on time. Student attendance is checked by the homeroom
teacher each day at the beginning of the class. An attendance record is maintained to
monitor tardiness and absences.
A student is considered tardy if he/she arrives at least fifteen (15) minutes later than the
scheduled start of the class. Three (3) instances of tardiness will mean a one-day absence.
When a student commits five (5) consecutive instances of tardiness, his/her parents will be
called to discuss and resolve the student’s tardiness. In the event of adverse weather
conditions, students who live far from the school may have reasonable excuse for being
late.
On the school day following a tardiness or an absence from class, the student must present a letter of excuse written and signed by his/her parents or guardian. The letter, which should signify the reason for the child’s tardiness or absence, must be duly noted by the homeroom teacher. In the event of a long-term absence due to illness, the student must present a proper medical certificate from his/her attending doctor. If a student leaves early 3 or more times in a semester, it will be counted as a 1-day absence.
11
TRAVELLING WITH THE FAMILY
In situations such as travelling with family, a maximum of 5 school daysfrom class is
permitted if travelling within the country and a maximum of 10 school days if travelling
abroad. Teachers will provide the student assignments related to the travel and thus the
child’s absence will be considered“at distant learning” and will not be counted against their
attendance.
An application form must be filled-out in advance at least 1 week before the trip and must
be submitted to the principal. In the case the parent was not able to submit the form before
the deadline, the student will be marked with an unexcused absence.
Furthermore, parents will not be approved for an Excused Absence for Travelling with the
Family if the travel period occurs during assessment week.
ABSENCE DUE TO FAMILY MATTERS
Attending to important family matters or urgent family matters are considered as an
excused absence.
A maximum 3 school days excused absence will be granted if the student is attending a
relative’s wedding or grandparent’s 60th, 70th, or 80th birthday.
A maximum of 5 school days excused absence will be granted if the student is attending a
relative’s wake, funeral and mourning regarding a family member or relative’s passing.
CANCELATION OF CLASSES
In rare situations NEIS may cancel classes. Situations include but are not limited to, flooding,
heavy snow, or certain high index pollution circumstances. In such cases, the school will
make an announcement in advance via our website (www.nanjingschool.com ).
ABSENCE DURING ASSESSMENT WEEK
12
Depending on each subject teacher, a student may take his/her exam before the planned
leave of absence from school. If the student cannot take the exam early and returned after
the scheduled week of assessment, 5 points will be deducted from the total score. If the
exam was taken after the 5 day grace period, 10 points from the total score will be
deducted.
CODE OF DISCIPLINE
NEIS is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students, the
purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for maintaining a safe school setting.
All faculty members will comply with these guidelines ensuring a safe environment for
learning.
I. Life Study Program
In the Life Study Program students learn important principles and values. Life study lessons
encourage and promote positive behavior; it is here that our respect program is reinforced.
Life study promotes the following principles:
Friendship (Let’s get along) Voice Choice (proper use of voice indoors and outdoors) Equality and Diversity Following the rules Appropriate and Inappropriate Tattling and Telling Not Bullying Respect for others Getting along with others – using kind words and actions Listening Sharing Being quick to forgive others Making a promise – good behavior pledge
The values that are taught within this class apply to all other classes also. Students are
expected to conform to the principles presented.
II. Merit System
13
Happy Faces Below you will find the rules for the Pre-K and Kindergarten classroom. It looks like a lot, but we hope that being specific will help us to understand and cover most situations. Each day a student receives certain number of happy faces from doing their seatworks, participating in class, or for a good behavior. If a rule is broken they must give one of these happy faces to the teacher. If they “lose” all five happy faces in one day they will have a detention the next day. A note will be sent home with the reasons for their detention. Merits Money Your child will also be receiving another kind of “merit.” This is like paper money that they will receive for exceptional behavior and classroom work/assessments. They will be able to “spend” this money at our Merit Store. These merits can also be taken away if rules are not followed or supplies lost. Please help your child to understand these in their own language.
III. Rules in Class
Classroom Rules
1. Listen to the teacher and follow directions.
2. Keep your hands to yourself. Do not touch something if it is not yours.
3. Do not interrupt the teacher unless it is a “B Emergency”. “B Emergencies”
means Bathroom, Blood, Barf (vomit)
4. Be nice.
5. Do what you know is right.
6. No hitting, pushing or spitting.
Miscellaneous Rules
1. Wear the proper uniform.
2. Push in your chair when you stand up.
3. Keep your desk neat and tidy, (papers, crayons, pencil, etc)
4. If you lose supplies that are to be kept in your basket, you will buy a new one
with merits.
14
5. Do not make unnecessary noise (tapping, humming, singing loudly if not
necessary).
6. Make sure to wear your slippers in the classroom and put on your “outside”
shoes when going outdoors.
7. Keep your feet under your desk, otherwise someone may trip over them.
8. Sit properly, with your bottom on the seat.
15
IV. Disciplinary procedure for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
The concept of discipline is required to consistently promote positive behavior. Our
disciplinary foundation helps students to understand boundaries that must be maintained.
NEIS applies a demerit and detention system. Listed below are reasons why a student may
receive a demerit or detention.
Reasons for Demerits or Sad faces The discipline system includes the use of demerits and sad faces . A student may receive a
demerit / sad face for the following reasons:
Minor Reasons include: Not listening to instructions Distracting others Breaking Toys Running during class time Not following classroom rules Pushingother students Disobedience
Reasons for Detention Five sad faces will result in a detention. A detention involves the student missing recess –
this is a 30-minute period after lunch before the start of afternoon classes. Detention will
involve completing worksheets set by the homeroom teacher, or helping to tidy the
classroom, or sitting on a detention chair and being able to play. It is a period time whereby
the student will reflect upon their actions.
Major Reasons include: Disobedience Major misconduct
V. Major misconduct
A “major misconduct” is defined as a form of aggressive behavior that is directed at an
individual(s) intended to cause fear, distress/harm to another person's body, feelings and/or

3. The deliberate exclusion of a student(s) from activities and privileges 4. Abusive language including name calling or verbal attacks 5. Any form of violent behavior such as:
Kicking other students Scratching other students Fighting with other students Hitting the students Spitting or biting
VI. Preventative measures against misconduct
Any form of misconduct is expressly forbidden and will not be tolerated therefore the
following steps are put into action:
1st Occasion – and/or according to the severity of the offence which may constitute further disciplinary action:
Encourage students to talk to each other and resolve the matter
A single day detention will be issued to the student involved
Merits to be taken away (Homeroom teacher’s discretion regarding the amount)
A warning will be issued to the student involved regarding the consequences of further offense.
The Homeroom Teacher will communicate (verbally & in writing) and collaborate with the parents of the student involved.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
General Concerns
We all know that poor health can make children less active and enthusiastic learners. Here
are some ways we can help your children stay healthy:
1. Make sure your child gets a full night’s sleep (eight to ten hours).
2. Make sure your child eats a nutritious, well-balanced meal before coming to school.
3. Our school provides healthy snacks for morning and afternoon recess. Please do
not send sweets and junk food for snacks.
4. Make sure your child stays home if he/she is sick or has a rash, fever, sore throat,
persistent cough, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Please call the school to report your
child’s absence.
All students are enjoined to follow health and safety rules. They are expected to follow
safety signs posted at key areas around the school such as hallways and entryways (e.g. no
running in the hall, no pushing, do not take the elevator alone or leave the school gate
alone). They are also required to stay inside the school premises until their parents,
guardians, assistant teachers, or other authorized personnel come to fetch them.
School fire and earthquake drills are conducted every year. An evacuation map and
emergency procedures are posted in each room on the wall next to the door of the
classroom. All school personnel participate in the drill procedures.
18
Illnesses, Emergencies, and Other Medical Issues
A student with an infectious illness is advised to not attend class in order to prevent the
spread of the illness to other students. He/She may return to school after he/she has fully
recovered and/or has been cleared by his/her physician.
Upon enrollment or during parent-teacher conferences, parents should inform the school of
any medical concerns (e.g., such as allergies and recent injuries) and needs (e.g., therapy or
medications) of their child. This will help ensure that the child is provided a safe learning
experience and helps to prevent any further health issues. Along with this, parents are to
provide emergency contact numbers by which they may be contacted should an emergency
involving their child arise.
To safeguard the health and safety of students, we have teachers certified and ready to
perform first-aid. In the event of an injury or an accident that requires formal medical
attention, the injured student will be immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
Accident / Injury Report
The homeroom teacher or a Korean/Chinese administrator will send home an
Accident/Injury Report Form to the parents in the case of a minor incident. In the case of
major incident, the office administrator will immediately phone the student’s parents. If
immediate action is required the school will take steps to ensure your child’s proper medical
attention and safety are carried out. An accident report form and the medical results from
the hospital will be provided to the parent.
19
Supplies and Belongings
Lockers
Each child is provided with lockers wherein the student can put his/her school bags. With
the help of the assistant teachers, all lockers must be kept clean and orderly.
School Supplies
Homeroom teachers will provide basic supplies that your child needs for writing and
coloring such as pencils, erasers, a set of crayons, glue and a pair of scissors. However, if
your child loses or brakes any of these supplies, parents will be responsible for replacing the
item/s. Demerits will be given if a student consistently loses or breaks the supplies given to
him/her.
Other Supplies and Belongings
At the beginning of each semester parents are given a list of supplies their child must bring
to school on a daily basis or that must be kept in their locker (e.g. water bottle, a pair of
indoor slippers, 2 sets of extra underwear and clothes appropriate for the season, 2 packs of
wet wipes and 2 boxes of tissues).

The principal’s office has designated a box for lost-and-found items. Items not claimed by
the end of the current semester will be given away or properly disposed.
Money, Toys and Electronic Devices
Students are not allowed to bring money, toys and electronic devices—such as PSP, cell
phones and audio players—to school unless specifically advised by teachers. Noncompliance
will mean confiscation of the item, which will be returned to the student at the end of the
class along with a notification to his/her parents.
Smart watches may be allowed to be worn in school as long as it will not be a distraction.

their classrooms and the rest of the school premises by: 1. Keeping their desk and classroom
tidy 2. Properly disposing of their trash 3. Keeping restrooms clean 4. Eating
properly and neatly 5. Cleaning up after snacks, lunch breaks, and play time.
Lost, Broken and Damaged Property of the School
In the case a student intentionally loses, brakes or damages school property, a letter of
notification will be sent to the parents. Depending on the loss or severity of damage to
school property, the parents may be asked to replace or pay for the lost or damaged item
(e.g. library books, sports equipment, T.V., projector, curtains, windows, etc.). Cost of
item(s) will be deducted from the student’s “Facility Deposit” (4000RMB) that he/she have
paid upon the enrollment. In the case the accumulated costs exceed the “Facility Deposit”, a

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCHOOL As an NEIS teacher, we consider ourselves chief partners in the education and holistic development of your child. We realize that all attempts to teach certain concepts, ideals and attitudes to your children will be futile without your support. We are excited to partner with you in inculcating values and encouraging learning in your children. Here are some ways you can help us better serve your child:
1. Be informed. Do take the time to read the weekly web updates or announcements for parents on the school’s website. Also, make it a habit of checking your children’s assignments envelop daily.
2. Be present. Do attend the parent-teacher conferences we hold every semester and attend our fun activities too such as United Nations Day, Walkathon Event, Christmas Program, Open Class and Open House Presentations.
3. Be connected to NEIS. Please schedule an appointment with your child’s teacher if you have any concerns related to your child’s learning and development. Let us know of any events or changes in your household that you think might affect your child’s performance in school (e.g., impending move, serious illness, and or a death in the family). Meetings with the School Director and/or teachers should be set at least three (3) days before the intended date.
