Session 1 – Self Esteem

Objective: To describe the effects of healthy and low self-esteem

What is self-esteem?

We use the phrase self-esteem to talk about the beliefs you have about yourself – what you think about the type of person you are, your abilities, the positive and negative things about you and what you expect for your future.

Tick which of these describe healthy or low self-esteem:

Healthy Low Your beliefs about yourself will generally be positive

Your beliefs about yourself will often be negative

You will tend to focus on your weaknesses or mistakes that you have made

You may experience difficult times in your life, but you will generally be able to deal with these

You may also blame yourself for any difficulties or failures that you have

What kind of things do you think can affect someone’s self esteem? E.g. bullying, body image, etc.

Session 2 – Self-concept

Objective: To explain how someone’s self-concept is worked out.

On a post-it or a scrap piece of paper write down a description of yourself, in your own words.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZdsCdx04to

Watch the video of the primary school children describing themselves.

What kind of language did you use to describe yourself?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Did you focus on your physical-self (i.e. the way you look), your emotional/mental-self (i.e. how you think/feel) or your behavioural-self (i.e. what you do)?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Page | 6 Wellbeing Study Booklet: Self-Esteem and Body Image

What do you think this says about what you value in yourself?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Self concept has three different components:

• The view you have of yourself (Self image)

• How much value you place on yourself (Self esteem or self-worth)

• What you wish you were really like (Ideal self)

Session 3 – Because I’m Worth It

Objective: To explain how to improve your own view of “self”

Your self-image does not necessarily have to reflect reality. Indeed a person with anorexia who is thin may have a self-image in which the person believes they are fat. A person's self-image is affected by many factors, such as parental influences, friends, the media, etc.

Kuhn (1960) investigated the self-image by using The Twenty Statements Test.

He asked people to answer the question 'Who am I?' in 20 different ways. He found that the responses could be divided into two major groups. These were social roles (external or objective aspects of oneself such as son, teacher, friend) and personality traits (internal or affective aspects of oneself such as gregarious, impatient, humorous).

The list of answers to the question “Who Am I?” probably include examples of each of the following four types of responses:

1) Physical Description: I’m tall, have blue eyes...etc.

2) Social Roles: We are all social beings whose behaviour is shaped to some extent by the roles we play. Such roles as student, housewife, or member of the football team not only help others to recognize us but also help us to know what is expected of us in various situations.

Page | 8 Wellbeing Study Booklet: Self-Esteem and Body Image

3) Personal Traits: These are a third dimension of our self-descriptions. “I’m impulsive...I’m generous...I tend to worry a lot”...etc.

Typically young people describe themselves more in terms of personal traits, whereas older people feel defined to a greater extent by their social roles.

Why do you think this is?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

How do you think you could use personal traits to improve your view of yourself?

Session 8 – Eating Disorders

Objective: To explain why people develop eating disorders

Eating disorders are characterised by an abnormal attitude towards food that causes someone to change their eating habits and behaviour.

A person with an eating disorder may focus excessively on their weight and shape, leading them to make unhealthy choices about food with damaging results to their health.

Match the most common eating disorders with their definitions:

Eating Disorder Definition Anorexia when a person goes through periods

of binge eating and is then deliberately sick or uses laxatives (medication to help empty the bowels) to try to control their weight

Bulimia when a person feels compelled to overeat large amounts of food in a short space of time

Binge eating disorder (BED)

when a person tries to keep their weight as low as possible; for example, by starving themselves or exercising excessively
