P eople make career changes for health, economics, or domestic reasons. Mine was none of those. Neither was the reason incompetence or that I lacked interest in my previous jobs as classroom teacher, campus principal, or public school superintendent. I have five college degrees in education, and have participated in meetings at the White House and offices of presidents in foreign nations to serve as a consultant on school reform. The Ford Foundation identified me among people who would likely affect public schools. I even wrote books, served on textbooks selection panels, and assisted in writing state academic assessments.
