If you are f _ _ then you are able to cope with the demands of
everyday life.
There a f_ _ _ measures of fitness:
S _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ S _ _ _ _ _ _ S _ _ _ _ _ _ _ S _ _ _ _
These factor helps us in our everyday lives.
We need to be supple so we can b _ _ _ and s _ _ _ _ _.
We need stamina to keep going for a l_ _ _ time.
We need strength so we can l _ _ _ and move h_ _ _ _ things.
We need speed so we can r _ _ towards good things and a _ _ _
from bad things.

Strength stretch bend four
We are going to find out how fit we are by measuring the four S’s
of fitness.
Experiment 1: Suppleness
Sit on the floor with your legs stretched out
straight in front of you. Reach for your toes. Get
a friend to measure how far your fingers are from
your toes and write it in the table below.
Name Distance from toes (in centimetres)
Name Number of Laps
Experiment 2: Stamina
We will find out who has the most stami-
na by running around the tennis courts as
many times as we can before we get
tired.
Experiment 3: Strength
We are going to squeeze a set of scales as
hard as we can and write down the number of
stones we get.
Name Number of stones squeezed
Experiment 4: Speed
We will find out who is the fastest by
timing how long it takes you to run across
the tennis court.
Name Time to cross the tennis court (in seconds)
Using your results answer the following questions:
Who was the most supple?..................................................
Who did the most laps/ had the most stamina? ………………………..
Who was the strongest? ………………………………..
Who ran the fastest ? ………………………………..
Was one person the best at everything or were different
people good at different things?

Our heart is a p _ _ _ . It pumps b _ _ _ _ around our body. So
that we have the e _ _ _ _ _ we need to live. Sometimes our
hearts beat s _ _ _ _ _ and sometimes our hearts beat f _ _ _ .
We are going to find out how exercise effects our heart beat
rate.
First you need to be able to find
your pulse. You can find you pulse
in two places on your wrist or
your neck. The pictures show you
how to do it.
fast pump blood energy slowly
Once you are able to find your
pulse we need to find out how many
times your heart beats in a minute
when you are sat still and calm. You
can then write the number in the
table on the next page.
Activity Heart beats per minute
Sitting still and calm
After walking around the room twice
After doing 15 star jumps
The next step is to find out how much your heart beat rate
changes when you do exercise. Complete the exercises in
the table and write down your heart beat rate after each
one.
Now draw a bar chart of your results.
Use your graph to answer the following questions.
When was your heart beat the slowest?
When was your heart beat the fastest?
Why did you heart beat faster?
Explorers need to exercise their hearts every day for at least one hour. Write active or not active under each picture.

Diagram of the inside of the heart
Cut out the labels and stick them in the right places on your heart diagram.
This artery carries blood to the lungsThis vein carries blood into the heart from the body
Right atrium: has thin walls
Valve: stops blood going back into the right atrium
Valve strings stop the valve turning inside out
Right ventricle: has thick walls; it pumps blood to the lungs
This artery carries blood around the body
This vein carries blood into the heart from the lungs
Valve: Stops blood going back to the left atrium
Left ventricle: has very thick walls; pumps blood to the body except the lungs
Left atrium Has thin walls
Blood pressure and pulse.
The blood pressure is the _______ of blood per unit area as it ______ through the ________
__________.
The __________ blood pressure is the _________ pressure, when the _____ ventricle
__________ to pump blood into the ___________.
The __________ blood pressure is ______. It is the pressure in the _________ when the heart
is _________ and ________ with blood.
As the left ventricle contracts, __________ in blood pressure cause the _________ to expand
and contract. This can be felt as a _________ in the major arteries.
Blood Label the parts of the blood
A – the large intestine where
water is absorbed
(colour blue)
B – the small intestine where
food is absorbed
(colour red)
C – The rectum where faeces
(poo) is stored
(colour purple)
D – The stomach where food is
digested (colour green)
E – the Oesophagus the tube
the food travels down to the
stomach (colour yellow)
F – The mouth where chewing
happens (colour orange)

Edward Jenner injected James Phipps the puss from a milk maids
sores.
Jenner had an idea that if you had recovered from cowpox you became
immune to smallpox.
Edward Jenner noticed that milk maids who caught cowpox did not
catch smallpox.
Smallpox killed thousands of people in the past.
James Phipps got better from cowpox.
James Phipps got sick with cowpox.
Edward Jenner then injected James with smallpox to see if he
got ill.
Luckily James did not get smallpox and went on to live a long and happy
life. ?

There are t_ _ _ _ types of microbes: b _ _ _ _ _ _ _, v _ _ _ _ _ _,
and f_ _ _ _ .
Some microbes are bad and cause d _ _ _ _ _ _ these are called
p_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
Other microbes are good as they are u _ _ _ _ _ to us.

Task: In the table below from the information on the power point write down or draw a picture to show how each of the microbes is bad or useful
The experiment:
We are going to do an experiment to find out how many microbes
live on our skin.
Microbes need food to grow. We can grow microbes on agar plates
because this is food for them.
Method:
1. Collect two agar plates
2. Open one of your plates and press you fingers gentle on the
top of the agar (NOT into it!)
3. Put the lid back on and sticky tape it shut
4. Write you name on the plate, the date and unwashed hand
5. Now wash your hands using soap and water.
6. Repeat steps2 to 4. but this time write clean hands on the
plate.
Next week we will be able to see if washing your hands made a dif-
ference to the number of microbes on your hands.
Results:
In the space below you can stick in or draw a picture of your
plates once they have grown.

Food contains e _ _ _ _ _. We need energy to m _ _ _. Differ-
ent foods have different a _ _ _ _ _ _ of energy in them.
We are going to do an experiment to find out which haws more
energy a Wotsit or a monster munch.
You need to set up your apparatus as below:
energy amounts move
Task: label the diagram using the words in the box.
Clamp stand Mounted needle

Temperature (°C)
We found out that the ________________ made the
temperature of the water change the most.
This means the _______________ has the most energy
and the _______________ has the least energy.
If we eat too many crisps and don't do
enough exercise we will get _______.
