1.1 BRIEF CAREER PROFILE OF Dr. C.UMARANI

Dr.C.Umarani obtained her B.E. (Civil) I Class with Distinction from GCT,

Coimbatore; M.E. (Structures) I Class with Distinction from CEG, Anna University; Ph.D

(Civil Engineering) from CIT, Coimbatore; P.D.F. from University of Canterbury, New

Zealand. She has 27 years of teaching experience (19 years at IRTT, Erode and 8 years at

CEG, AU).

She was one of the six candidates selected for international research in Earthquake

Engineering under NPEEE scheme by MHRD. She was awarded Research Project by

DST under Young Women Scientist Scheme.

As a researcher, she has established R&D collaborations with University of

Canterbury, New Zealand. She was invited for a seminar talk in 2014 by UC, NZ. She has

carried out Seismic Performance evaluation of bridges by field testing and presented

research findings before Bridges Committee at TRB, USA. She has successfully

completed research projects funded by DST (Rs. 8.88 lakhs), AICTE (6 lakhs) and UGC

(Rs.12 lakhs).

She has guided 8 Ph.D. scholars (6 as Supervisor, 2 as Joint Supervisor), 2 M.S.

(By Research) Scholars, and currently guiding 8 Ph.D. scholars. She has published 24

papers in International journals and 10 papers in national journals, reviewed three books,

written one book. She has organized 11 national level technical seminars/workshops/STTP

and has in her credit 25 international and 48 national conference papers. UG Projects

guided for three consecutive years 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 were awarded Best Project

award for Final Year B.E. Civil ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ENDOWMENT AWARD.

Her administrative responsibilities at University level include: Deputy Director,

Centre for Academic Courses; Professor-in-Charge, CEM Cell (Civil and Electrical Minor

works Cell ), CEG.; AEE (Design), Estate Office (1 year); Member, Joint Working

Committee, AU-ISTE for FDTP, Member, Inspection Committee for Affiliation, AU;

Member, Board of Studies, SIT.

She was involved in major sponsored studies which include, Structural analysis

and design of major Grade Separators -Perambur flyover bridge, Strength and condition

assessment of 300 m high RCC TV tower at Rameswaram, Proof Checking the design of

Service Reservoirs, International students hostel for IISc, Pune etc.

As Professor–in-charge of Computer Lab, she has mooted the purchase of latest

computers and software PRIMAVERA, RUAUMOKO, SOFiSTiK AG ( Finite Element &

CAD Software). As attached to Structural Dynamics Lab she has procured the latest

equipments such as Wireless Structural Testing System, Structural Dynamics Monitor,

Data Acquisition system accessories and data recording Software and Power operated

Double acting Hydraulic Jacks. She was actively involved in the depart mental works such

as, preparation of DST-FIST proposal, TEQIP (Phase 2) proposal, UGC XI plan proposal,

UGC-DSA proposal, DST-Purse proposal for Civil Engg. Dept.

To develop Industry-Institute interaction she was co-coordinating the work related

to creating MoU with M/s. Gammon India Pvt. Ltd. for GET (Graduate Engineer Trainee)

Development Programme. As a faculty in charge for M.E.(CEM) she has arranged

Seminar Series – 2010 for the benefit of PG students; a number of students had got

opportunity for internship, placement and gained knowledge. Project Implementation

Committee member, TEQIP, CEG. She has co-ordinated training programmes for masons,

bar-benders and site-supervisors for earthquake resistant construction. She is one of the

expert member in the SIT (Special Investigation Team for the Moulivakkam Building

Collapse case. She is a fellow member of Institution of Engineers and Life member of

IASE, ISTE & ICI.
