INTRODUCTION

In this project, you are going to write about your personal world by the hand of August, a 10-year-old boy with a rare medical facial deformity. You will be able to understand some excerpts from “Wonder” (the book in which August is the main character) and you will prepare a scrapbook using some lines from the compositions you will have written throughout the project plus a touch of creativity. This project is at the same time a Portfolio as it becomes a place for you to think about your language learning experiences, assess them and collect examples of your writing work. Each section includes writing models to illustrate what you are asked to do, grammar references, common phrases and expressions and some space for the writing tasks that your teacher will correct before you add them to your scrapbook layout “My life board”. The project is divided into 7 sections: 1 MY PHYSICAL/ PSYCHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION (Page 4)

Here you will learn how to write a description using vivid vocabulary. Some previous tasks (translation, reading, drawing) will help you improve the descriptive paragraphs

2 FAMILY AND FRIENDS (Page 7) Here you are asked to describe some photos in English. You will review the present continuous and some language you can use for this purpose 3 THINGS I LIKE, THINGS I DON’T LIKE (Page 9) You will reflect on some of the things you like and things you do not like. Analyse and understand your behaviour through this exercise 4 INSPIRATIONAL QUOTATIONS (Page 11) What inspires you? Find the best inspirational quotes by famous authors, experts on success and inspiring leaders. You will discover some positive thoughts, great advice and ideas from experts through a collection of inspirational quotes on topics including friendship, life, love, career and leadership 5 YOUR BEST MEMORY (Page 13) Do not let memories fade. In this section, you will be invited to get closer to your memories. It is always therapeutic to write down your recollections. Either way, do your best to recall the sensory details that made the moment important. You can write about your best childhood friend, a memorable place, memories of your mother and father, a holiday memory, school-related memories, etc. Keep the memory alive! 6 WHAT WILL YOU DO IN A FUTURE? (Page 15) It is said that writing about our dreams for the future can help us become happier. It is also fun to think about what life will be in the future and it will be a significant source of inspiration for you. Here you will use the future tense to envision and write about your future life

7 SCRAPBOOK DESIGN (Page 17) Time to tell your life story creating a unique scrapbook layout adding photos and including some paragraphs from the writing drafts your teacher will have corrected a priori. Follow the requirements and plan a beautiful scrapbook design 8 SCRAPBOOK PRESENTATION (Page 18) Prepare an oral presentation introducing your life board in class. Remember that the best scrapbook will be awarded 9 ASSESSMENT (page 18) This section includes the assessment criteria and grading percentage for the project tasks. The total project grade will be based on your behaviour and work habits, the performance in the project file (writing process), your “Life board” layout and the oral presentation of it

10 SELF-ASSESSMENT (Page 19)

You will use this section to assess your behaviour and language level to discover what you are good at and where there is room for improvement 11 PROOFREADING CHECKLIST (Page 22) You can use this section to help you with your written work BIBLIOGRAPHY The texts used as writing prompts are adapted from the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio. [Palacio, R J. Wonder. New York: Alfred A Knopf, 2012. Print] Your teacher highly recommends you to read this book either in English or Spanish (“La lección de August”)

Before starting, can you answer these questions?

Why are we doing this project?

How is it connected with real life?

What do you hope to accomplish with this project?

Recommendation: In each section, you will find some space to write the final version of your essay. Follow the 5 parts of the writing process: 1. Prewriting: plan your writing 2. First draft 3. Revise 4. Edit 5. Publish: share your writing to your teachers in the space provided All copies of your rough draft work must be attached at the back of the project file.

1 MY PHYSICAL/ PSYCHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION

1.1 Do you know how to write a general description to appeal the readers? Read and translate the text. You may need a dictionary.

“I know I’m not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure. I do ordinary things. I eat ice-cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have and X-Box. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. My name is August Pullman, but my friends called me Auggie, by the way. I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse. I don’t want to brag or anything, but I am actually considered something of a medical wonder, you know.

I am so quiet and shy about meeting new people and I normally scream, gasp and gulp I eat like a tortoise, if you have ever seen a tortoise eating. Like some prehistoric thing.”

DESCRIPTION OF PEOPLE

1 Introduction about you: name, age, what you do... 2 Physical description 3 Psychological description 4 Something peculiar about you

1.2 Focus on the physical description. Read August description and draw his portrait.

“I have had 27 surgeries to correct facial anomalies I was born with, but people still call me cruel nicknames

such as Freak, Freddy Krueger and Lizard face. In fact I suffer from craniofacial abnormalities, and my facial

deformity is still apparent despite the operations.

My eyes sag below the level of normal eyes on a face. The left eye is also situated a little lower than the

right eye (they are in the wrong place). Because of shallow eye cavities, my eyeballs appear unnaturally

pronounced. The upper eyelids always appear half-closed, while the lower lids seem to sag downward.

I do not have any eyebrows or eyelashes. While my cheekbones appear to be non-existent, my nose seems

to overwhelm my face. My ears are also very small and cauliflower-shaped. My jawbone is extremely

undersized. These surgeries have left scars on my face, the most prominent of which is a gash from my upper lip to my

nose. My skin is like “melted”… To protect myself I grew my hair long last year. I like how my bangs cover my eyes: it helps me block out the

things I don’t want to see!

WRITING TASK 1

Auggie’s story is told in 1st person. The first person voice always lends empathy to the action, since the

reader is given insight into the feelings of those involved in the story. Now it is your turn: write a description of yourself in first person too. Ask your teacher to correct it.

2 FAMILY AND FRIENDS – How to describe a photo or picture

Read the text and write the name of each Wonder’s character.

On the right of the picture you can see my mom Isabel. She is holding my astronaut helmet. A few years

ago I wore an astronaut helmet everywhere I went. To the playground. To the supermarket. To pick my sister

Via from school. In this photo Via is holding Justin’s hand. She truly cares for me and always defends me.

Justin is a nice guy. He has small round glasses. When he is nervous he has some tics. In the photo he is

carrying his violin. Jack Will is my closest friend, along with Summer. Summer is a “saint”. Everybody likes

Summer. Next to Vera, it’s me. I am wearing a baseball cap and it’s very handy to cover over my deformed face. Dad doesn’t appear in the photo because he is taking it, in fact. Cheeeeese!

WRITING TASK 2

Write a description of two photos, one with your family and one with your friends. Ask your teacher to correct any mistakes.

Remember to use the present continuous!

3 THINGS I LIKE, THINGS I DON’T LIKE

Read August’s likes and dislikes and answer the questions.

For me Halloween is the best holiday in the world, even better than

Christmas. I get dress up in a costume. I get to wear a mask.

1) What do you think August like Halloween?

My favourite thing is Star Wars and Bobba Fett and Jango Fett are the best characters. Once I

was called “Dark Sidious” in class and I felt very sad.

2) Do you know why Auggie felt so sad?

I like “The Lord of the Rings” and when my mum reads me “The Hobbit” at

bedtime.

My number one thing is my old dog, Daisy. She is my best friend, always

taking care of me.

I don’t like hanging out after school. 3) What do you think August does after school?

I hate bullies in school like Julian and big kids and I can’t stand

people staring and making fun of me. 4) What can he do against bullies?

5 YOUR BEST MEMORY

Read and practice the past simple! Write the past simple verbs in the right column, find the infinitive of each verb and write the meaning. See the example. “The night I was born there were two nurses in the delivery room. One was very nice and sweet. The other one, Mom said, didn’t seem at all nice and sweet. She had big arms and (here comes the funny part) she kept farting. Like, she’d bring Mom some ice chips, and then fart. She’d check Mom’s blood pressure, and fart. And the nurse never ever said “excuse me”! When I came out from mom’s stomach, the doctor fainted, and the farting nurse started yelling at him the whole time: “Get up! Get up! What kind of doctor are you? What kind of doctor are you?” And then all of a sudden she let out the biggest, loudest, smelliest fart in the history of farts. Mom thinks it was actually the fart that finally woke the doctor. Of course I can’t remember this story but I like when Mom tells it because it makes me laugh so much. I’ll improve my hairstyle and eye contact

In a future I would like to walk down the street without people seeing me and then doing that look-away thing

I will give up the bad habit of mumbling
