Frequently Asked Questions

What are we expected to do with the keywords ?

The keywords are given to you on each grid to encourage you to use subject

specific words in your work. You should try and use these words where you

can when you are completing your tasks. You should make sure that you spell

them correctly when you use them and understand what they mean.

Teachers will also encourage you to get this planner out in lessons so that you

can use these words to help you in your class work. Using the correct spe-

cialist language will improve your work and increase your levels / grades. If a

teacher plans on doing anything else to test you on any key words, they will tell

you in lessons.

How many Super Challenges do I need to do?

The Super Challenges are included to give you an opportunity to go that extra

mile in subject areas that you particularly enjoy or are particularly good at. It is

not compulsory for you to complete the Super Challenges in each subject but

you should aim to have a go at one or two each half term. Remember - you

can earn extra Classcharts points by completing a Super Challenge.

What do the deadline dates mean?

The grids show the deadlines as the week commencing (w/c). This means that

you should hand your completed task in during one of the lessons that takes

place in that week. If you have more than one lesson of a subject, you can

choose which lesson to hand the work in for (as long as it is in by the last les-

son in the week). This gives you extra flexibility in planning when you start and

finish your tasks so that you can spread them out more evenly. Remember -

you can start a task as early as you want, so if you have a quiet week, you

might want to make an early start on something else a few weeks ahead. How

you plan and organise your time is up to you.

Always try to complete the highest level of challenge that you are able to.

Recommended read—

The Tattooist of Auschwitz,

by Heather Morris

In 1942, Lale Sokolov arrived in Ausch-

witz-Birkenau. He was given the job of

tattooing the prisoners marked for

survival - scratching numbers into his

fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to

create what would become one of the

most potent symbols of the Holocaust.

Waiting in line to be tattooed, terrified

and shaking, was a young girl. For Lale -

a dandy, a jack-the-lad, a bit of a chancer

- it was love at first sight. And he was

determined not only to survive himself,

but to ensure this

woman, Gita, did, too.

So begins one of the

most life-affirming,

courageous, unfor-

gettable and human

stories of the Holo-

caust.

CO-OP ACADEMY MANCHESTER

Attendance at a glance for Parents and Carers

We would like all students to attend the academy for more than 98% + of the time. We know that high attendance at the academy and achieving target grades are linked. Punctuality is also very important at the academy. All students must arrive on time and be ready for learning with the correct equipment, e.g. pencil case, PE kit and planner. For students who have not had breakfast this is available in the servery from 7.30am – 8.15am.

The start of the academy day All students should arrive on the academy site by 8:20am - any student arriving between 8:30am and 9:15am will be marked as late. Any student arriving after 9:15am will be marked as Unauthorised Late; this is when the academy closes its register. All students arriving late will make up the time by attending a 30 minute Lost Learning Detention (LLD) at the end of the academy day. Letters and text messages will be sent out informing parents/carers of their child’s late.

Illness Should your child be too ill to attend the academy would you please contact us on the first day of absence where ever possible before 8:30am, tel no: 0161 795 3005. Please keep us informed of your child’s progress. If you expect your child to be absent will you please send in evidence of medication prescribed by your doctor or hospital. The Academy has a right to request evidence of illness or appointments to authorise the absence. This can be the Academy medical card stamped by your G.P or a letter from your G.P or medical centre. Should we not receive medical evidence absences will be noted as unauthorised . Where attendance levels are of concern and monitoring is in place medical evidence will be required for all absences. Telephone calls are made to every parent/carer of a student who is absent from the academy every morning. If we cannot make contact, a text message will be sent. In some cases a follow up home visit may be made by an academy representative. Holiday Leave in term time Celebration

The academy closes for 70 days of holidays each academic year and we expect all parents/carers will take their family holidays whilst the academy is closed. Any parent wanting to take their child on a leave of absence from the academy should inform the Principal in writing. The application will be looked at on an individual basis and you will be informed by letter of the outcome. However, it is highly unusual to grant leave of absence during term time. Any holiday or leave taken without permission from the Principal will be unauthorised and legal action will be sought from the Local Authority.

Persistent absence If we have tried and your child’s absence continues to be a problem, this is called Persistent Absence. Any child who has 3 days absence or 6 sessions in a 30 day period Any child who has below 91% absence *session equivalent of a half day in the academy; if our efforts have not had an effect then you will be asked to attend a meeting with the Attendance Manager, LPSO or the Principal. (Penalty Notice Warnings are issued to parents & carers after 5 sessions (2 ½ days) of unauthorised absence.)

Whilst the academy embraces all faiths and cultures it also recognises the importance of education, wherever possible we will try and accommodate all religious celebrations within our use of the flexi working day and prayer rooms. However, as with all leave of absence this must be applied for in advance to the Principal. Absence without authorisation on these occasions will be unauthorised and may result in legal action.
