Week 1-7Phenomena resisting the motion of ships. Resistance due to friction, wave making, form, appendage, wind and waves, squat, blockage and shallow water effects.

Week 9-14Estimation of powering using methodical series and statistical methods. Advantageous effects of hull form changes- bulbous bows. Asymmetric sterns and optimum trim for ships in ballast.

The Resistance of a ship at a given speed is thefluid force acting on the ship in such a way as tooppose its motion.

It will be equal to the component of the fluid forcesacting parallel to the axis of motion of the ship.

The term resistance is the preferred term in shiphydrodynamics while the term drag is generallyused in aerodynamics and submerged bodies

Frictional Resistance, RF: The frictional resistance is the component of resistanceobtained by integrating the tangential stresses over the wetted surface of the shipin the direction of motion.

Residuary Resistance, RR: The residuary resistance is a quantity obtainedby subtracting from the total resistance of a hull, a calculated frictionalresistance obtained by any specific formulation. In general , the greaterpart of the residuary resistance of merchant ships is the wave-makingresistance.

Viscous Resistance, RV: The viscous resistance is the component of resistance associated with the energy expended due to viscous effects.

Pressure Resistance, RP: The pressure resistance is the component of resistanceobtained by integrating the normal stresses over the surface of a body in the directionof motion.

Viscous Pressure Resistance, RPV: The viscous pressure resistance is the component ofresistance obtained by integrating the components of the normal stresses due toviscossity and turbulence. This quantity can not be directly measured except for a fullysubmerged body, where it is equal to the pressure resistance

Wave-making Resistance, Rw: The wave-making resistance is the component of

resistance associated with the energy expended due to the generation of gravity

waves.

Wave pattern Resistance, Rw: The resistance component deducted from measurementsof wave elevations remote from the ship or model, where it is assumed that thesubsurface velocity field and hence, the momentum of the fluid can be related to thewave pattern by means of a so called linearized theory.

Wave-breaking Resistance, RwB: The wave-breaking resistance is the component of

resistance associated with the braking of the ship bow wave.

Spray Resistance, Rw: The spray resistance is the component of resistance associatedwith the energy expended for the generation of spray.
