The official website for Tampa Bay area assures those who plan to travel to Tampa that
“Treasure Awaits”. Indeed, Tampa is one of the most exciting cities in the country with its
many extraordinary cultural, artistic, entertaining, dining, sports, recreational venues
available to visitors.
For those NAHTM members traveling to Tampa for the 27th annual NAHTM conference,
more treasure awaited via a rich educational and networking experience …an experience
that would push them to the forefront of hospital-based, patient transportation expertise.
Tuesday, October 3 2017
The “treasure hunt” officially kicked
off at 400 PM with Registration in the
hotel Lobby. Attendees quickly
stumbled upon the first treasure
…friends…both old and new!
Registration is always a time abuzz
with conversation and full of
anticipation for the coming week and
this year’s event proved no different.
Following registration, those members who would be sessions moderators attended
orientation. New members were engaged in a “meet and greet” session that provided an
overview of the conference and all members were invited to engage in some ice -breaking “fun
and games”.
The evening was made a memorable experience as the members made their way to a welcome
reception, held in the hotel’s enchanting La Fuente Courtyard.

The breakfast event was a hit due to both the good food always available in a Marriott Hotel
as well as the warm and heart-felt welcome delivered by NAHTM’s Executive Committee: Dr.
Pamela Douglas- Ntagha - President; Peggy Thiele, MBA -Vice President; Elbert Lewis, MBA-
Secretary and Charlotte Cumbo, MBA, MHRM-Treasurer
Managing Patient Transportation Departments Utilizing VAST
Sherman Armstrong, Jr., MS: VAST Sports Performance
This year’s opening session was delivered by Sherman Armstrong, Jr., a renowned student
and professional Track and Field athlete and current principal owner of VAST Sports
Performance. In his current capacity Mr. Armstrong assists athletes in their efforts to
maximize their potential and in guiding adults to attainment of their fitness goals. Progress
and ultimate achievement is gained through the application of the principles of VAST:
VISION, ATTITUDE, SUCCESS, TIME.
Mr. Armstrong used his strategy for success in the sports and fitness arena to deliver an
analogous, on point, treasure map to follow to the pinnacle of achievement in Patient
Transportation leadership. After Mr. Armstrong’s presentation, members went onto to the
day’s roster of podium speakers. These peer presenters covered a wide range of topics
essential to success in the patient transportation management field.
Concurrent Podium Presentations
Peers sharing years of experience and accumulated expertise is the central core to the
NAHTM conference. These podium presentation sessions are what makes the conference
the success it is. Who else knows better what works best for hospital based, patient
transportation than hospital-based, patient transport managers?
Over the years, many repeated break-out session speakers have grown in confidence and
presence, and have added much to the knowledge base and management wisdom of their
peers. And, every year brings a batch of new faces to the podium, eager to reveal their
successes and fresh insights. All benefit from their experience as an accomplished podium
presenter.
Even the most seasoned of conference attendees, members with years in the profession,
come away from these presentations with a new gem of knowledge, an idea to improve a
process, to add a new service, achieve greater patient centeredness, improve transport staff
engagement, internal customer service…treasures indeed!

Breakfast and…
The 2017 Keynote Address: Overcoming Odds
Dr. Antonio J. Webb, MD
Dr. Antonio J. Webb, MD, orthopedic surgeon and motivational speaker and published
author, delivered a riveting account of his rise to where he is today. Dr. Webb “overcoming
the odds” of success, Dr. Webb transcended his grim childhood in Louisiana. His first avenue
of escape was High School. While there, Dr. Webb earned such excellent marks, he
graduated in the top 5% of his class. His interest in Biology while attending high School first
kindled in Dr. Webb the desire to become a medical doctor.
His second avenue of escape was through the US Air Force, where he served with distinction
as a medic in Iran. During his time in the Air Force, Dr. Webb also pursued, and earned his
undergraduate degree from The University of Texas. Upon discharge from the military, he
was eventually accepted by Georgetown University School of Medicine, earning his
Doctorate of Medicine degree with honors in 2014.
Throughout his address, Dr. Webb highlighted the many difficult and often insurmountable
challenges he encountered along his life journey. Throughout, Dr. Webb provided valuable
nuggets in the revelation of the many strategies he employed to bring him to where he is
today.
Concurrent Podium Presentations Continue!
Throughout the morning and afternoon, more of our NAHTM colleagues presented on
various timely topics such as staff training and engagement, expanding scope of service,
staff safety and analyzing the data! A treasure trove of experience from our own resident in
the field of hospital based, Patient Transportation!
Industry Sponsored Lunch Symposium
Dr. Neal Wiggermann, Ph.D., Senior Biomedical Engineer, Ergonomics Expert

Breakfast Symposium- Surge Protocols: Mass Casualty Incidents William A. Sisolak, Jr., BS, Manager Patient Transportation, Lehigh Valley Health Network
Mass causality incidents, which result in rapid volume increases in the nation’s EDs, are increasingly becoming more prevalent than ever before. This rapid insertion of patients, many of whom are trauma victims, can greatly tax any healthcare systems. William’s presented a timely overview of various protocols that can be utilized as well as a rationale as to why there should be a plan in place to cover any type of sudden surge in volume.
NAHTM Annual Business Meeting The members-only annual business meeting highlighted reports from all members of the Executive Committee as well as reports from the various committees. Proposed changes in NAHTM’s Bylaws were reviewed and voted on. The Executive Committee positions of Vice President and Treasurer were also up for election. Incumbents Peggy Thiele and Charlotte Cumbo both retained their positions, Vice President and Treasurer, respectively.
At the conclusion of the Annual NAHTM Business Meeting, it was on the NAHTHM Exhibitor Marketplace for an afternoon of fun, food and more treasure…

Saturday, October 7, 2017 Certified Healthcare Transporter (CHT) Level I Instructor Training begins! Impact Training Corporation Principlas: Jorie W. Philippi, MS Ruthann Walsh, MA
What is an ITC Certified Healthcare Transporter (CHT)?
A Certified Healthcare Transporter is a hospital based, patient transporter who has achieved proficiency in all
competencies outlined in the performance based, 3-book course endorsed by the National Association of Healthcare
Transport Management ( www.nahtm.org ). Those books are CHOICES: Ethics for the Workplace, Course I; Strategic
Skill Building for Transporters, Course II; Technical Skills Training, Course III. The curriculum was developed by Impact
Training Corporation (ITC) in partnership with NAHTM.
What is a Level I CHT Instructor?
A Level I CHT Instructor (Level I) has successfully completed the Level I CHT Instructor training session. The typical
Level I has a managerial role within, or over, a hospital-based transport department or may be employed in the
education department of a healthcare organization. To attain this distinction, the Level I candidate who attended the
2-day course learned what comprises the 3-book curriculum, methodologies to deliver the curriculum as well as
strategies to implement and engage staff. Each 8 - hour day passed quickly as the training session engaged the
participant in many “hands-on” activities and discussions.
The attendees at the 2017, Level I CHT Instructor class have been empowered to train transporters in the three
certification courses. The new Level I Instructors will provide ongoing skills evaluation gained by transporters
throughout the training and makes recommendations for national certification awards to ITC.
What Topics do the 3 Books Address?
• Choices- Life Skills
This course fosters development of life and inter-personal skills geared toward success in the workplace. Eight
modules address topics such as 7 reasons why people leave jobs and self-esteem. Your staff will learn by
reading the easy-to-understand material and completing the exercises, as well as through extremely effective
peer discussion groups and role playing. The outcome of this course is a more secure, self-assured employee
who is better equipped to focus on the needs of the patient and their co-workers.
• Strategic Skill Building - Thinking Skills:
This course focuses on the applied cognitive strategies (thinking skills) that underlie competent job
performance. The sessions are designed around actual job materials and scenarios from the frontline
employees’ job tasks. Topics address critical job areas such as communicating with peers, supervisors, and
other hospital communities / departments, following procedural directions, recognizing alternate conditions
on the job and responding appropriately, prioritizing actions, and predicting outcomes. This course fosters
consistent and reliable quality job performance as well as intrinsic customer service skills.
• Transporter Technical Skills – Application Skills
This course demonstrates a wide range of equipment and transport safety protocols that are compliant to the
Joint Commissions’ National Patient Safety Goals and Environment of Care mandates. The experienced patient
transporter will spend the least amount of time on this course material, but the new transporter will require
more time to master the technical skills. The outcome will be a highly skilled transporter!

Benchmarking Session NAHTM President Dr. Pamela Douglas - Ntagha, Tom Perry, MA, Tele-Tracking Product Manager and Gary Hall, BS, Application Specialist for Tele-Tracking After a delightful brunch shared with much good fellowship, the benchmarking team, reported out on year 2 of NAHTM’s ambitious benchmarking initiative. The initiative has been established to set national benchmark standards for hospital-based transports. The session outlined the process, discussed preliminary outcomes and outlined how hospitals can participate. Most notable is that, in the second year of the program, participating hospitals increased by over 200 %!
The time together, as always, was a rare treat…
How often are our members able to network with so many hospital- based, patient
transportation managers in one place at the same time? How often can so many
patient transportation managers be in one place at the same time to view the
many delights offered by the organization’s supporting vendors? Only during the
National Association of Healthcare Transport Management Annual Conference &
Exposition does this happen.
So, don’t miss out on this once-a-year event and book your spot at the next annual
conference to be held in Seattle WA (yes! Seattle!) from September 11 to
September 16, 2018…do it today, do it now!
