PROGRAMWEDNESDAY 1 MAY 2019

12:00pm–2:00pm Registration

2:15pm-3:45pm Conference Opening including welcome and liturgy

3:45pm-5:00pm Keynote Speaker Br Michael Green fms What’s in their hearts? How spiritual families can enact God's mission in Catholic schools today. At their best, at their most vital, the Church’s spiritual families conduct simply outstanding schools – community driven, mission oriented, innovative and joy filled. That’s because it is in their DNA to offer fresh, accessible and compelling paths of Gospel living for young people. Christ alive! But even great movements can fade into self-referential, exclusive, tepid and nostalgic vestiges of what they once were. What makes the difference? It’s all about the people.

#teachingatconvergentmomentIt is an exciting and dynamic time to be a part of the education system with a number of convergent factors impacting on the profession including: the need for a new work mindset leading to reflection and re-visioning about the role and purpose of school education; a greater understanding of student learning, especially that of adolescent learning; a shortage of teachers to meet the needs of a changing workforce; and new teacher education practices and standards. This convergent moment provides a unique opportunity for those in the profession to serve as leaders in this space and for a new way of conceiving the role of teachers in our community. This keynote will provide an overview of some of these compelling factors influencing the profession, and how we might use this as a platform for reinvigorating the profession.

FAITH / CHARISMBr Michael Green fms

Leadership Matters, A Lot. Priorities and possibilities for charismic leadership in schools. What is the primary source of credible authority for someone in a leadership role in a Catholic school? How can that authority be nurtured and distributed? And what difference does it make when the school claims to be part of a particular spiritual tradition of the Church? Charism-linked language can be both helpful and misconceived in answering such critical questions. The ongoing integrity and vitality of spiritual families depend on getting the answers right.

EDUCATIONMs Marie-Therese Kilmartin, Principal, Coláiste Bride, Presentation Secondary School, Dublin

Action is inspired by our Values - Living the legacy of Nano 300 years later - How are we doing this in our modern global society? As educators in a Presentation School we face many challenges on a daily basis which often draw on our understanding of the ethos of our school as we respond. How do we link our Mission, Vision and Values into our daily activities in school? This workshop aims to encourage reflection on ‘why’ and ‘how’ we take actions that are inspired by the legacy of Nano Nagle and the Presentation Sisters whilst living out gospel values in a global community. How is a Presentation School different? Or is it? How do we promote and link in with our fellow Presentation schools? How can we sustain our characteristic spirit /ethos moving forward? Who is responsible for upholding & promoting the school ethos? How can Presentation schools develop greater global links and build identity.

WELLBEINGDr Pete Stebbins

Leveraging Diversity: The Foundations of Collaboration in Teaching TeamsIn this interactive workshop Pete shares the foundation strategies and toolkit needed to leverage diversity in High Performance Teaching teams and how to deepen subsequent collaboration using learning walls and feedback protocols with real life case studies and examples.

EDUCATIONEngaging Young Adolescent LearnersProfessor Donna Pendergast, Dean and Head of the School of Education and Professional Studies, Griffith University, QldResearch supports an approach to schooling dedicated to the middle years as a distinct, significant and unique period of life, with all its complexity, challenge and change. The use of age-appropriate pedagogies and approaches in response to the identified needs of early adolescence is an approach underpinned by evidence-based pedagogical practices. In this workshop, we will explore several frameworks currently operating in Australia and employ these as tools for participants to reflect on the practices utilised in their schooling context to identify gaps that can serve as sparks for reform. A focus on social and emotional wellbeing will also be featured.

WELLBEING 1. Walking with the Sisters: The Pastoral Partnership Catherine Allen, Deputy Principal Students, St Rita’s College, Qld An overview of our College pastoral program which, by design, supports the Presentation Sisters and their pillars through House allocated ministry and wellbeing initiative support. The session will outline the process for the expansion of the House structure; the timeline, the process for decisions (colours, mottos, crests, etc), buy-in and the linking that provides action to the mottos devised for each House. The wellbeing initiatives are colour coordinated too.

2. From Homeroom Teacher to Learning MentorChris Burn, Deputy Principal Students and Sarah Tymensen, Deputy Principal Learning & Teaching, Star of the Sea College, VicThis presentation will outline the process of our journey re-imagining the role of the homeroom teacher from a wellbeing role to one which incorporates the homeroom teacher as a learning mentor. We started our journey, posing the question: “What will the role of the homeroom teacher look like at Star of the Sea to best suit the wellbeing and academic needs of our students in the 21st century in the context of a Presentation School?” It will encompass the research connecting wellbeing with learning and our consultation process with staff and students. Data will be utilised in this presentation to highlight the positive change for our staff and students.

3. Highway HeroesJeromie Mack and Melissa Kelly, Iona Presentation College, WAIn 2018, Iona Presentation College Junior school implemented the “Highway Heroes” social and emotional program. Students learn that everyone is on their own emotional highway filled with BUMPS and HAZARDS. Everyone is a HERO. HEROES use TOOLS to help overcome challenges. The session will discuss how students and staff at Iona have benefited from having a school-wide approach to dealing with friendship and wellbeing, focussing on practical ways to implement the program and how the language that it generates allows children to express their feelings in a relatable way.

4. Making Connections: Country to CitySimone Irvine and Years 11 and 12 students from St Rita’s College, QldIn 2016, St Rita’s College was ‘Travelling Lightly’ through its commitment to the Presentation pillar of Simplicity. In living out this theme, students in Kildare House built on the common Presentation heritage shared with St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Murgon and with their House motto as their inspiration, “Strength and Growth, from Humble Beginnings,” raised funds to give the St Joseph’s students an unforgettable experience. Hosting the Years 5 and 6 students from Murgon for a ‘Country to City Weekend’, the weekend built on the well-established relationship between these two schools, a relationship that sees the St Rita’s students visit St Joseph’s every year on an immersion. Connections such as these allow students to embrace their schools’ shared Presentation heritage and also gain a greater understanding of each other’s culture.

The opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Nano in her homeland and see the laneways where she once walked has had a deep impact on staff who have been on pilgrimage to Ireland.
