Nadia ShahedSelected Works
I am Nadia, a student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in my third year of studies. Originally from Bangladesh, I have lived in Japan and Canada. Inspired by different cultures and traditions, I like to think about how they can be synthesized in today’s architecture. I enjoy traveling, cooking, painting and dancing. I want to use architecture to make a difference at an experiential, cultural and social level. Included are some of my works
from past years.

1A DESIGN STUDIO //Val RynnimerieMidterm Project (Individual)
Project brief: Design a pavilion using a variation of the classic nine square grid problem. Site, building material and programme will not be present. Use maximum of three primitive elements once each.
Approach: For this project my inspiration was the Indian classical dance “Odissi” which emphasizes on fluidity and rhythm. By removing a few columns and integrating some of the columns within the walls, I tried to design a pavilion for experience, where the visitors would go through the walls to experience what is beyond that wall and to experience the walls, the columns and the ceiling themselves. The ceiling with a fluid rhythm eventually comes
down to become a wall and ultimately the floor.
NINE SQUARE GRID PROJECT
14Nine Square Grid Project
15Nine Square Grid Project
THE DESIGN PROCESS: Start with a Nine Square Grid. Sixteen columns. Design for experience. Keep an element of surprise. Use wall once (continuous). Use ceiling once (continuous). Remove four columns. Integrate seven columns within the wall. Keep the elements of fluidity and rhythm in the design. Express it through the
intersecting of wall and ceiling.

1B DESIGN STUDIO //Donald McKayFinal Project (Individual)
Project brief: Design a residential space in Toronto. Include variety of home sizes each with their own private outdoor space and also include a commercial space in the building. Ontario building code has to be maintained.
Location: Downtown Toronto, ON
Approach: The building I designed contained six storeys of residential space and an art gallery on the first floor. Three spaces were 3 bedroom homes, and then two double storey lofts followed by four studio lofts, two on each floor. Because of the location and the limitation of space, parking was removed and instead safe indoor bike space was provided.

1B ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN //Terri BoakeFinal Project (Individual)
Project brief: Design an “unplugged” structure in an extreme climate using vernacular design strategies. Design must be innovative.
Location: Chittagong, BangladeshClimate: Hot and humid22.27 degree North91.82 degree East
Approach: Chittagong, Bangladesh has a hot and humid climate due to its tropical location and the high amount of rainfall it faces every year. This Oasis is designed to serve as an escape from the harsh sun and the still, humid air. It is located a little outside Chittagong, conveniently located by the main highway, a place the tired traveler can use as a stop during his tedious journey or a space where a group of friends from the city can hang out at. This “Oasis” uses vernacular architecture with modern innovations. All the materials used are locally made and the structure itself is made by local people without
the need for advanced techniques.

1B BUILDING CONSTRUCTION //Terri BoakeFinal Project (In collaboration with Crystal Yung)
Project brief: Design a structure primarily made of steel which would be sustainable, temporary, responsive to site and socially relevant.
This project was submitted as an entry for the SSEF competition 2013 the topic of which was “POP UP ARCHITECTURE”.
Location: Greektown Toronto, ON
Approach: Inspired by the lack of public spaces in busy urban areas, we designed a parklet which would occupy the space of two parking spaces as regulated by the municipality of Toronto. Privately owned, publicly used, Papilio contrasts the busy streetscape by having greenery and a place to sit and relax. Papilio allows for a smooth transition from sidewalk to parklet. It leaves room for interaction between people on the street and the parklet. Also to inspire the use of sustainable use of resources, Papilio has built in bike rack to promote cycling. The theatre is inspired by the street artists that
occupy the streets.

THE STEEL STRUCTURAL SYSTEM: The Skeleton of Papilio is composed of coped steel beams and girders for the base, steel stringers for the stairs, and pre-fabricated, factory-welded, steel pratt truss. All bolts and plates are identical for efficient fabrication and are dimensioned to ease transportation.
THE ASSEMBLY: The Steel skeleton is clad with wood panels and attached by round-headed stainless steel bolts to ensure a seamless appearance. Installed solar panels power the floor pot lights, creating a warm ambiance, implementing security and amplifying the stage. The seating is premanufactured in two pieces and assembled on site. The butterfly glass canopy is held together by steel cables. This roof shelters the bike and seating from rain.

2A DESIGN STUDIO//Adrian BlackwellFinal Project (Individual)
Project brief: Design a public indoor space and a public outdoor space. In this part of the project, focus on useful spatial intercation within the building, between its programs and between the building and the spaces that surround it.
Location: Downtown Cambridge, ON
Approach: I focused on the relationship and connectivity between the already existing spaces to form my new public space. The main concept between my design is the formation of a cultural space with special emphasis put on dual nature of spaces-my indoor auditorium opens up to the outdoor theater to form a stadium like space, the outdoor theater is also a regular public space in absence of productions and the swimming pool also turns into an aquatic theater. The other issue I tried to explore in this work is the treatment of backstage space as a “private-public space” where a restricted group of people bond and
becomes friend in an intimate setting.

3A DESIGN STUDIO//Philip BeesleyFinal Project (Individual)
Project brief: Design a mixed use private-public tower with Retail, Marketplace, Public Eatery and Offices including flex office space in Toronto’s liberty Village.
Location: Liberty Village Toronto, ON
Approach: I wanted to create an open public space with instances of more private intimate environments. The market place is designed to be for vendors and sellers (both permanent and farmers market) but with heavy emphasis on the visitors comfort. There are lots of spaces for the visitors to enjoy the market place without being directly involved in it. The office tower is the reverse. It has more private spaces while the terraced indoor balcony works as the public sphere for the employees occupying the offices.
