Japie van Niekerk, the CEO of South African property development company NAD, has taken delivery of a Bell 407GXP which he is using to transport prospective retail tenants to shopping centre construction sites. It is van Niekerk’s second Bell 407; he operated the previous aircraft for a decade but is enjoying the advanced technology of the 407GXP, on which he has installed high visibility windows to improve the view for his passengers.

BELL 407GXP UPGRADE OFFERS POTENTIAL NAD RETAILERS COMFORT AND UNOBSTRUCTED BIRD’S-EYE VIEWS

“I had a need to renew the helicopter because I didn’t want to fall behind on the technology,” he tells EBAN. “I use the helicopter for my business almost on a daily basis. We are property developers in rural areas. I fly my potential tenants over these areas and land on a site where I am constructing a shopping centre. This gives them an overall impression and bird’s-eye view of the market where they will be opening their stores. The 407 is a very reliable product with good service. We went for the GXP because we spend a lot of time flying at altitude and this aircraft gives me that little bit of extra power.

“The high vis windows are very important for my chosen application. This option wasn’t available on the original aircraft. The old 407 was good and did the job well, but this is just better! The other aircraft had about 1,000 hours on it so it could have continued, but having a completely up-to-date aircraft in this situation gives you the edge.”

His customer demographic includes directors and MDs of listed companies and the GXP puts them at ease. “The aircraft is comfortable, powerful, has superb air conditioning and excellent visibility,” he continues. “My clients can relax and feel confident about being in the helicopter, rather than being intimidated by it. This means that they can completely concentrate on what they are looking at.

“Many of them don’t fly in helicopters often and some of them have never been in one. The experience is what they are going to see, not the flight, so this way we keep the focus on their views outside the aircraft, the lasting experience.”

Van Niekerk has also installed a high impact front window and feels that this, along with Bose headsets, has significantly reduced interior noise. He concludes: “The 407 is enhancing the flights I was already doing rather than opening up new flights. It certainly looks good and makes people

feel comfortable and enables them to switch off and concentrate on what they are looking at. As a pilot I am confident with it because I know that I have got that little bit of extra thrust. I don’t have to worry about getting into and out of confined landing areas.”

FIRST BELL 505 JET RANGER X IS IN PRODUCTION

The Bell 505 Jet Ranger X has achieved more than 900 hours of flight time since the last update. The aircraft is now nearing the end of the structural testing and analysis required for initial certification.

The program has a Type Certification readiness review with Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) this month. The very first Bell 505 Jet Ranger X is now on the pro-duction line in Mirabel. Be on the lookout for more up-dates as we near certification

BELL 525 WILL CERTIFY WITH FOUR TEST AIRCRAFT

Bell 525 flight-test vehicle two (FTV2) will be one of four ships used for FAA certification. Before FTV1 crashed in July, the original plan called for five helicopters. Bell is working with the FAA and NTSB to get the 525 test fleet back in the air following the crash. (Photos: Bell Helicopter)

Bell will certify the 525 Relentless using four test aircraft, and a senior Bell executive maintains the company retains confidence in the super-medium twin’s original design. The program has stood down flying since the fatal crash of the first prototype, FTV1, registered as N525TA, on July 6.

The NTSB is continuing its investigation as to why the main rotor blades struck both the tailboom and the nose during the in-flight break-up sequence that destroyed the helicopter and killed both test pilots. FTV1 was one of three 525 prototypes in the flight-test program, which at the time was budgeted for five aircraft. FTV1 is believed to have been conducting tests at or near Vne speeds when main rotor rpms dropped off and the main rotors significantly “departed their normal plane of rotation,” according to an NTSB spokesman.

Bell is continuing assembly of the next two flight-test aircraft and beginning the build of the first several customer aircraft, according to Larry Thimmesch, vice president of Bell 525 sales. Thimmesch said FTV4 is heavily kitted with search-and-rescue equipment and more flight-test instrumentation than originally planned. It should be ready to fly early next year. FTV5 will have a lot of the oil and gas kits on it. Between those two aircraft, approximately 50 kits will be certified as part of the initial flight-test program. Aircraft six through nine are in structural subassembly. “We are moving forward. We understand our production configuration,” Thimmesch said.

Thimmesch said Bell has been spending the downtime modifying the test aircraft to the latest production configuration and continuing non-flight testing, including drive, system and structural testing, as well as making continued progress with certification authorities in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Bell is using its Fort Worth Systems Integration Lab to continue to work software updates into the aircraft’s Garmin G5000H avionics and fly-by-wire control system. “We have more than 40 software packages on this aircraft and [the 525 Relentless Advanced Systems Integration Lab] is a great platform to mature those and validate the latest software drops and to integrate some of those improvements in the system,” He called the 525’s FBW system “rock solid.”

Bell also is continuing design work on add-on kits that will be part of future configurations, Thimmesch said. “Really, the only thing on the program that has not moved forward is actually flying the aircraft. And [before the accident] we really had flown the envelope of the aircraft and we really understood the aircraft.” Thimmesch said Bell and the NTSB are working together “very aggressively” to get the 525 back in the air. “We have a return-to-flight team working with the FAA hand-in-hand. That has been very productive,” he said.

“The confidence in the aircraft within Bell is as strong as it has ever been,” Thimmesch said, adding that when the NTSB concludes its investigation Bell will have “very clear messaging to the industry about the helicopter.”

Tier 1 Engineering flew a battery-powered, manned Robinson R44 in September at Los Alamitos Army Airfield, Calif. The flights were made under a special airworthiness certificate in the experimental category issued by theFAA’s Los Angeles MIDO. The flights were part of a project under contract from Lung Biotechnology PBC to produce an electrically powered semi-autonomous rotorcraft for organ delivery (Epsarod). They were piloted by Ric Webb of OC Helicopters.

Over the course of several flights between September 13 and 21, the modified R44 performed hover, hover taxi and a record five-minute cruise flight to 400-feet altitude with a peak speed of 80 knots.

“I’m very pleased to achieve this historic breakthrough in aviation,” said Glen Dromgoole, president of Tier 1 Engineering. “Never before has a conventional manned helicopter performed a vertical takeoff, cruise and landing solely on battery power, and we are thrilled to have further achieved 400-feet altitude and 80 knots during our first full test flight.”

The Tier 1 Engineering team designed and integrated all of the helicopter sub-systems, which included 1,100 pounds of Brammo lithium polymer batteries, twin electric motors and a control system from Rinehart Motion Systems. The five-minute flight on September 21 drained approximately 20 percent of the battery energy.

Tier 1’s is not the first electric helicopter project. In 2011 France’s Solution F achieved a two-minute flight in a manned ultralight untethered electric helicopter. The flight was piloted by Pascal Chretien, an aerospace engineer from the firm. In 2010, Sikorsky unveiled the Firefly project, a modified Sikorsky-Schweizer S-300C fitted with a U.S. Hybrid Technologies electric motor and two lithium ion battery packs, capable of flying for 12 to 15 minutes.

Lung Biotechnology PBC intends to apply the Epsarod technology to distributing manufactured organs for transplantation to major hospitals with much less noise and carbon footprint than current technology. Tier 1 Engineering is an aircraft design and development company with operations in Costa Mesa, Calif., and Victoria, Australia. Major clients are BAE Composites, Goodrich Aerostructures, Zodiac Aerospace, Composite Horizons,EAM Worldwide, Mecaer Aviation Group, ATK Aerospace, Panasonic Aviation, Janicki Industries and Lung Biotechnology.

“The Piper M350 is the only current production pressurized piston-engine aircraft now on the market, making type certification by EASA an important achievement,” said Simon Caldecott, President and CEO of Piper Aircraft. “The single-engine aircraft is a key part of our focus on product improvement and offers the advanced safety features that set our aircraft apart and gives our customers peace of mind.”

Equipped with the Garmin 1000 avionics suite, the M350 features electronic stability protection, underspeed protection, coupled go around and automatic level mode. The M350 is also equipped with emergency decent mode which is a significant safety feature that automatically descends the aircraft to lower levels in the rare case the pilot is incapacitated at altitudes where oxygen is required. The Piper M350 seats six with club seating and is powered by a Lycoming TIO-540-AE2A 350 horsepower engine allowing 213 KTAS / 395 km/h max cruise speed at up to 25,000 feet.

The cockpit features dual 10.4-inch PFDs and a high-resolution, 12.4 inch MFD along with a GFC700 autopilot.

The 2016 M350 is listed at a competitive price of $1,155,500.

PIPER M350 CERTIFIED BY EASAOctober 26, 2016 – Piper Aircraft, Inc. announced the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has awarded the validated type certificate for the Piper M350, paving the way for the aircraft to enter service in Europe.

GLENN STAPLES: MEDICAL DIRECTOR AWESOME AIR EVAC

How did you get started in aviation? I knew from early on in my medical training that I wanted to be part of the emergency medical ser-vices and air ambulance fields. This dream came true in 1997 when as a medical officer in the Trauma Unit at Johannesburg Hospital, I joined the Flight for Life HEMS Service on Echo 1 (a BO 105). Later that same year I began flying fixed wing air ambulance missions with International SOS out of Lanseria Airport.

Where were you trained?I did my undergraduate medical training through the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannes-burg, finishing in 1995. I also did 3 years of registrar time specialising in Anaesthetics through Wits

University. I have subsequently completed an MBA through the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).

Where was your first job, and what jobs have you held since? My first 7 years post qualification were spent at Johannesburg Hospital (with some rotations to the other Johannesburg teaching hospitals). This time included internship, surgical senior house officer, trauma unit medical officer and anaesthetics regis-trar positions.

Thereafter I took up the position of Medical Director of Netcare 911 (a private national Emergency Medical Service in South Africa). During this time I developed and managed the aeromedical division, which included 4 fixed wing and 3 HEMS air am-bulances and 5 Surf Rescue helicopters. I was with Netcare for 5 years.

After leaving Netcare in 2008, I set up my own com-pany with a partner, and since then have become a health entrepreneur with a pan-African focus. In this field we have started the following businesses:

MSO International: providing health insurance administration and medical assistance services across the whole of Africa. I am currently the Managing Director of this company.

Europ Assistance International Health Solutions: providing remote site medical services to large corporate in Africa.

REAF Consulting: specialising in developing healthcare facilities for clients

Awesome Air Evac: a fixed wing air ambulance service. I am currently the Medical Director for AAE.

• Apex Surgi-Centre: building and operating Day Surgery Centres. I am currently a director of Apex.

What are your current duties? My role as Medical Director of Awesome Air Evac includes responsibility for all clinical and quality aspects of the service, but also extends to market-ing, client relationship management, and general business development. In addition to this, I also fly on the service as one of the flight doctors.

Please share a particularly thrilling story about a medical rescue.I will never forget a fixed wing evacuation flight to Port Harcourt in Nigeria in my early flying days. We were flying in a small Lear 25 and our weather radar malfunctioned on the second leg from Luanda to Port Harcourt. This left us having to approach Port Harcourt into a massive Friday evening thunder-storm largely blind. Following a nauseating 20 minute descent with turbulence that frightened the daylights out of me, our pilots then had 3 failed approaches in Port Harcourt as they could not see the runway from 200 feet.

We then headed for our alternate, only to be informed 10 minutes later by them that they were experiencing a power failure and had no runway lights. I knew enough about aviation to know that when the pilot starts madly paging through the Jeppesens looking for a runway within range, that we had trouble on our hands. Fortunately a local 727 pilot on the apron at Port Harcourt, who had been monitoring our radio comms, radioed our pilots to suggest a small local airport in Enugu that was still open as they were waiting for him to arrive.

We landed uneventfully at Enugu with Fire Trucks waiting since our captain had to declare an emer-gency based on our fuel reserves. As grateful as we were to be safely on terra firma, we soon discovered that we were stuck in a small town in Nigeria with no immigration and no Jet A1 on a Friday evening. The earliest we could get a fuel truck with Jet A1 to Enugu was going to be Tuesday the following week! We found a dingy hotel to sleep in that night.

Following much telephone discussion with our tech-nical team in Johannesburg the following morning, they cleared us to use paraffin. We borrowed a 44 gallon drum from the airport, bought all the paraffin we could find in Enugu, and spent a couple of hours siphoning paraffin into each of the wing-tip tanks. We then flew low-level back to Port Harcourt, picked up our patient and had a relatively unevent-ful flight back to Johannesburg (except for the stomach bug I picked up in Enugu).

What's the best part of your job? There are 3 things which I love most about this job:1. The Team-work you experience as the 2 pilots

and 2 medical crew taking on a host of un-knowns to achieve the mission objective.

2. The ability to see the most remote parts of Africa (a continent with which I am in love!)

3. The pure appreciation and relief on the faces of the patients and family when you rescue them from a disastrous situation and deliver them safely to a top class hospital.

The most challenging part?Dealing with a host of unknowns or incorrect infor-mation on each mission, from flight clearances, local airports, local hospitals and completely incorrect patient information.

43 AIR SCHOOL HAS BEEN APPROVED AS A CADET PILOT TRAINING PROVIDER BY VIETNAM AIRLINES

Vietnam Airlines was founded in 1956, under the name Vietnam Civil Aviation, and the Airline was established as a private enterprise in April 1989. Vietnam Airlines flies to 52 Destinations in 17 countries.

Four years ago 43 Air School approached Vietnam Airlines to partner as a pilot training provider. Vietnam Airlines is expected to be operating over 170 aircraft by 2020. This means that they are under immense pressure to have “Line Ready” pilots in the shortest possible period.

The Jet Pilot Program, offered at 43 Air School, offers exactly this solution, taking students from zero flying experience to Boeing 737- 800 or Airbus A320 Type Rated. Not only are students offered world class training, but also a bespoke training program, developed with and approved by the VAA (Vietnamese Aviation Authority). This training solution offers seamless integration into Airline operations. 43 Air School also offers an “all-inclusive” training solution, which includes: three meals a day, accommodation, laundry service, gym membership, lectures, exams and all courseware and equipment.

Vietnam Airlines has a small list of hand-picked schools that they employ their pilots from, no pilots will be recruited by the airline unless they have trained at one of these institutions. 43 is proud to have been included in the preferred pilot training institution list. 43 already boasts a variety of private Vietnamese students, and hope that this exciting collaboration will see Vietnamese students flocking to the school.

MY WAY TO 43 AIR SCHOOLThe global demand for airline pilots is increasing exponentially and this is exciting news for young aspiring pilots. However, the financial implications are so staggering that it is not always possible to achieve. Meet the Team

Arnold Mauritz Husayn Gertse

Arnold Maurtiz (26), and Husayn Gertse (28) have experienced first-hand the struggles of qualifying for the industry, but are in no way sitting back or even thinking of giving up!

They have partnered with the Sakhikamva Foun-dation and 43 Air School to make their dreams come true. Here is their story :

Sakhikamva Foundation prides itself in creating innovative concepts to develop youth in the aero-space industry. One of the biggest barriers for fu-ture pilots are the financial costs of obtaining a pilot license and a position ready in the airline in-dustry. This, combined with the lack of exposure to the aviation industry, further exacerbates the ability for the youth from peri-urban and rural areas to enter the pilot fraternity with ease.

When Arnold Mauritz – a recipient of the Morn-ingstar Flight Academy Sakhikamva Foundation Private Pilot Scholarship – approached the Foun-dation in early 2016, to assist him in raising funds for his airline pilot license, we could comfortably support the idea with our existing infrastructure. Arnold’s personal challenge was to cycle 1000 km over 10 days, set for 22nd to 31st October 2016. He was joined by Husayn Gertse, a tri-ath-lete and future pilot. The pair aimed to raise funds before and during the cycle challenge. The initiative included introducing the world of aviation along the routes, which is fantastic as they are able to interact with youth and children in the rural areas. This journey with Arnold and

Husayn, not only assisted them in raising funds during the cycle challenge, it would further also support them throughout their Jet Pilot Program and their entry into the airline industry. The key success factor of the my way to 43 Air School initiative/campaign is the partnership with a world class flight training school in order to train the pair as airline pilots from the very first hour. We are fortunate to have such a facility as 43 Air School, a world renowned air school in South Africa.

If there is an adventure, you can count Arnold in! Flying has been the goal he has pursued since the age of twelve. Ask any goal-getter; sport is certainly a key influence in developing the vital skills such as self discipline, commitment and teamwork and most important of all PASSION for what you do – all important attributes necessary for in a career in aviation. With this in mind, Arnold is able to combine his passion for flying, love of sport and the outdoors into a single event. The challenge and adventure of cycling 100 km for 10 days and find himself at the doorstep of 43 Air School.

Known in the sports and multimedia design industry as ‘dangerman’, you will not be surprised that Husayn’s marathon personal best touches on 4min/km. From a young age, his passion for the industry was evident in the model aircraft he so diligently built. On his first visit to the flight deck, Husayn knew he was meant to sit in the left hand seat of a gigantic metal machine. He further pushes the boundaries of his athletic ability with his newfound passion for triathlons. AVIATION’S MOST IN-DEMAND PROFESSIONAL CAREERS

EDITION 19 • DECEMBER 2016

WELCOME TO NATIONAL AIRWAYS CORPORATION’S MONTHLY NEWSLETTER TO THE AVIATION INDUSTRYHANGARTALK XPRESS 12

BY JAMES WYNBRANDT SEPTEMBER 14, 2016

AVIATION MAINTENANCETECHNICIAN

Aviation maintenance technicians maintain, service, repair and overhaul airframes, power plants, avionics and aircraft instruments. Boeing projects 600,000 AMTs will be needed by the airline industry alone over the next two decades. Some 170 educational institu-tions offer two-year or four-year training programs qualifying graduates for FAA airframe and power-plant certification, the gateway to top AMT jobs. Military experience can also count toward cer-tification. The median annual salary for AMTs last year was more than $58,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statis-tics, with most technicians earning be-tween $46,000 and $71,000 annually; those with airframe and power-plant certification and four-year degrees typi-cally earn more.

AVIATION SAFETY INSPECTOR

Government aviation safety inspectors en-sure the safety and regulatory compliance of aviation facilities, operations, programs and aircraft. Additionally, FAA safety in-spectors certify pilots and flight instruc-tors, and National Transportation Safe-ty Board inspectors examine accidents. Airlines, maintenance centers and other aviation businesses also employ safety inspectors, as well as aircraft inspectors, who perform similar services. A wave of retirements of government inspectors, combined with an increasing emphasis on aviation safety initiatives in the private sector (SMS, IS-BAO, etc.), is creating high demand for these safety specialists. Avia-tion safety inspector positions typically re-quire prior experience as a professional pi-lot or maintenance technician, and federal employees can earn from about $66,000 to $153,000 annually, with a median sal-ary for FAA inspectors of about $93,000. The median for all transportation inspec-tors is about $71,000 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

AIRLINE PILOT

Rising global demand for air travel is cre-ating a shortage of airline pilots. More than 550,000 new airline pilots will be needed by 2034, according to industry projections. More than 250 colleges and universities in the U.S. offer the FAA-ap-proved training needed for an airline pi-lot job in addition to multiple fast track, zero time to ATP training organizations like ATP Flight School. Additionally, with-in the past year, a number of airlines have begun pre-hiring qualified candidates at these institutions and providing tuition assistance. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median pay for airline pilots was more than $136,000 in 2015, but ex-perienced captains at major airlines can earn well over $200,000 per year.

CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR

The airline pilot shortage has created demand for certified flight instructors, who teach fledgling aviators how to fly and prepare them for the examinations required to earn their pilot licenses and ratings. Underscoring the growing need, the CFI ranks have already climbed more than 11.5 percent over the past decade. New CFIs typically earn from about $33,000 to $40,000 per year, which compares favorably with the starting pay for a regional airline pilot of $20,000 to $25,000. Salaried positions for supervis-ing CFIs at FAA-approved training pro-viders can range from about $55,000 to more than $70,000 annually.

AERO IT SPECIALIST

With Wi-Fi and connectivity solutions becoming standard equipment on com-mercial and business aircraft, the aviation industry needs experts in onboard net-working, satcom and Internet systems. Aero IT specialists install, troubleshoot, repair and service onboard connectivity and communication systems. Last year, the first industry certification standard for these professionals, the AeroIT cer-tification, was approved. The median annual salary for all computer and IT occupations was more than $81,000 last year, ranging from about $65,000 to $111,000, and employment in the field is expected to grow 12 percent over the next decade. Training as either an AMT or IT technician provides the background needed to become an aero IT specialist.
