Expatriate Life and Adjustment Moving to a foreign country can be one of the most exciting times of your life, but it is not without its stresses and headaches. It is a wonderful opportunity to travel and learn about other cultures, but it can be difficult having to cope with the adjustments of handling your daily life with different procedures, standards, customs and problems. With this guide, online resources, colleagues, new friends in your new country, your Human Resources department and any other assistance you can find, and most importantly AN OPEN MIND, you can work through the difficulties. You will feel triumphant and be able to appreciate the similarities and differences between your culture and home country and your newly adopted culture and country. You will most certainly go through stages in your adjustment to an overseas assignment. There is a wonderful honeymoon stage where everything is new, exciting, and interesting at the beginning. You may then experience the frustration of having to navigate through procedures that you are unfamiliar with and unaware of. Some days just trying to find an ingredient for a favourite recipe at the local grocer may ruin your day. Chances are that there is something that will work, but it may have a different name or might be in a part of the grocery store that does not make sense to you. Rely on friends and online resources and consider it a challenge to overcome. For trailing spouses, it is important to get involved in a local organisation or work or volunteer at your child’s school. The expatriate employee has an instant purpose and network at their company when they move to a foreign country. Children have school to plug

into immediately. Trailing spouses have to work harder to find a network and activities, but clubs are the easiest place to start. Do not forget to try to become involved in the local culture as well. Many councils and local organisations have classes and clubs where you can meet natives of the country where you live. This is such a great way to learn about the local culture and people. Remember that your frustrations are natural. Moving, even down the street in your home country, is stressful and you have to remember to try to keep a sense of humour. Take care of the things that have to get done, but don’t stress over the less important things. Give yourself time to relax and find the enjoyable things to do in your new country. Try to view new things as different rather than wrong and look for the positives. Writing in a journal or diary can help you sort out feelings, record unique experiences, and can be a wonderful thing to look back on and appreciate the struggles and victories. Talk with your partner and children about the adjustment and everyone will realise that they are not alone in their feelings. Most expatriates, after going through stages, get to the point where they are disappointed when their international assignment comes to the end. Hopefully that is where you will find yourself in a couple of years. You will have made new friends, become more culturally aware, and overcome obstacles that most people cannot imagine facing. Transportation Naberezhnye Chelny - Naberezhnye Chelny is a large

road center of Tatarstan. There are two railway stations “Krugloe Pole” and “Naberezhnye Chelny” in the city. There are also two railway properties OAO “KamAZ” and OAO “Kamgosenergostroy” capable to process 1200 carriages per day.

- Naberezhnye Chelny is a large junction of highways, it has a bus terminal with suburban and long-distance bus routes. The “Volga” M7 E22 Moscow-Vladimir-Nizhniy Novgorod-Kazan-Naberezhnye Chelny-Ufa federal highway passes through the city.

- There are also passenger and

cargo river ports in the city. A passenger river port serves to 200 000 passengers for navigation. A mooring for cargo and container processing and storing of 217 running meters length has project capacities for cargo transportation of 112 000 tons for navigation.

- The name of the airport in

Naberezhnye Chelny is Begishevo (NBC). It is also a city of Nizhnekamsk branch of Tatarstan airlines. The nearest International airport is located in Kazan (KZN) - Kazan International Airport. The quickest way to get to Naberezhnye Chelny from Moscow is if you fly with Tatarstan airlines from Domodedovo airport (DME).

Elabuga - The nearest railway station is

Naberezhnye Chelny, it is in 22 km (minibuses and buses go to Elabuga from here; railways station is near the bus station), but the railway station Naberezhnye Chelny is not a junction, so the quantity of trains passing through it is low. For example, only one train a day leaves from Moscow to Naberezhnye Chelny (the trip lasts for 22 hours), it arrives in the evening, leaves back in the morning, and tickets for it are sold very quickly. Besides this, in about 100 km there are large stations Mozhga and Agryz, from here it is possible to get to Elabuga in two hours, but because of location in different regions, there is no direct communication between them. All this makes impossible visiting Elabuga without overnight stay.

- The nearest airport is Begishevo (it is near Naberezhnye Chelny), from here to Naberezhnye Chelny by bus or Nizhnekamsk, and then by bus or minibus. It is also possible to fly to the international airport Kazan, and from there go by bus or taxi to Elabuga.

- Another way to get to Elabuga is a tourist trip over Kama River on a motor boat with a stop at steep bank at “Devil’s Fort”. Besides tourist routs, pleasure motor ships call at the pier of Elabuga (like “Moscow” or “OM”) from Nizhnekamsk, it is maximum 15 minutes of slow motion from it to Elabuga down the river. Besides this, fast boats like “Meteor”,

9

“Rocket” sail from the lower reaches of Kama (Chistopol) and Volga (Kazan). The only limitation is that this mode of transport is seasonal.

- It is more comfortable to reach

Elabuga by bus from Kazan or Izhevsk, but in both cases the trip lasts about four hours. Bus station of Elabuga is on distant outskirts of the Upper city, drive on minibuses 4 and 6. Old bus station has been closed long ago. Buses from Naberezhnye Chelny and Kazan usually do not enter Elabuga, but will leave you with pleasure at city entrance from side of Kazan (at 4th micro-district) or at entrance from side of Naberezhnye Chelny (Lower circular way).

- It is easy to reach Elabuga by car

by national highway M7 Moscow-Kazan-Ufa (National highway M7 “Volga” is a highway of federal importance Moscow-Vladimir-Nizhniy Novgorod-Kazan-Ufa. Part of European route E22, part of highway from Elabuga to Ufa relates to European route E017).

Health and Medical Care Expats living in Russia with a residency permit are eligible for the same public healthcare as a Russian citizen. However, it is a legal requirement of residency in the country for foreign nationals to have a health insurance policy, and it is advisable to take out a comprehensive policy with a reputable company. It is common practice for expats to visit private clinics and hospitals for check-ups, routine healthcare and dental care, and only use public services in case of an emergency.

Most clinics in Naberezhnye Chelny and Elabuga can provide medical services under the private health insurance schemes. Before applying to the hospital an expat should contact the insurance company, to get the list of several clinics and hospitals that the insurance company works with.

Cultural Experience of Russia: Get to know the basics on food, dining, drinking and enjoy your time with Russian friends Dining Etiquette Although Russians are generally not superstitious, there is at least one superstition you should know about: When you arrive to a Russian's house for dinner, do not even think about offering your hand to them until you have completely crossed the threshold. You should arrive on time and bring a cake and after entering completely, then it is OK to offer to shake hands. You are then usually expected to remove your shoes. You will most likely be treated as an honored guest and you should return this favor by dressing nicely. If you are male you are expected to socialize with the other men, if you are female you should offer to help prepare the meal and the invitation will almost certainly be accepted. Men who offer to help in the kitchen are generally laughed at and if you make it into the kitchen you will most certainly be kicked out as if you are crossing a cultural barrier. When the meal is served, standard manners indicate you should eat with the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right. Keep your hands within sight but do not put your elbows on the table, and wait to be served. Russians tend to serve the oldest or most honored person first so wait until they determine your status has arrived. To continue on the differing roles for each sex, women do not cut bread nor do they pour drinks; the men must take on these roles so if you see a woman's drink empty fill it up and if you are a woman, it will not be long before a

fellow diner fills your glass. Before emptying your glass though, you have to start drinking and before that begins you must wait for a toast, which is typically first given by the host. It is considered rude to turn down food or to clean your plate. Try everything offered to you and once you are finished eating, leave a little food on the plate to show that the amount served was more than enough; this is a great compliment to the host. The only exceptions to this are that you must finish your bread and your alcoholic drinks. When dining in a restaurant, the host or inviter is expected to pay. If you are a guest, you are expected to offer to pay, but this offer will most likely be turned down. Tipping is not common in Russia but there are exceptions at nice restaurants catering to foreigners. Service in these locations is generally better than average and tips are expected in the form of about 10% for a meal. History & Influences Russian food is based on the need to survive the cold, long winters. For this reason, Russian food is based on meats and fats, and heavy vegetables, like potatoes. Due to the short growing seasons there are few fruits and vegetables in the traditional diet other than mushrooms. As ingredients have become more abundant over time, cakes have become very popular and are regularly served. As a slowly expanding nation, however, there have been few outside influences on Russian cuisine but in general there is a vast variety from region to region within Russia.

18

Staple Foods Bread: the Russians love their breads from standard white bread to pastries with fruit, nuts, and chocolate; one of these varieties is served with nearly every meal. Regional Variations & Specialties Russia’s regional variations in ingredient availability means there are hundreds of dishes unique to particular regions, and with Russia’s many minority populations and ethnic groups there are many different specialties. Each of these groups have traditional dishes, most of which have not expanded in popularity beyond the local region's borders. Here are a few of Russia’s most well-known dishes: Beef Stroganov: beef cooked in a cream and mushroom-based sauce, sometimes served over noodles Borsch: beet soup served in hundreds of versions based on the region and chef; typically served with sour cream Pelmeni: bread-like dough stuffed with any number of combinations, from fruits to meats Pickled Herring: herring served cold, a common snack in Russia and some Scandinavian countries Drinks

All popular non-alcoholic drinks are available in Russia and including a great selection of juices. Mineral water, both still and carbonated is also popular.

However, Russia is first and foremost known for vodka. However, in today's culture, beer has become very common except at celebrations, where vodka is still king, or perhaps ‘tsar’ is more appropriate.

In general, tap water in Russia should not be consumed for safety concerns

Naming Conventions Russian names comprise:

First name, which is the person's given name.

Middle name, which is a patronymic or a version of the father's first name formed by adding '- vich' or '-ovich' for a male and '-avna' or '- ovna' for a female. The son of Ivan would have a patronymic of Ivanovich while the daughter's patronymic would be Ivanovna.

Last name, which is the family or surname.

In formal situations, people use all three names. Friends and close acquaintances may refer to each other by their first name and patronymic. Close friends and family members call each other by their first name only.

Gift Giving Etiquette Gift giving usually takes place only between family and close friends on birthdays or in celebrating the New Year or Orthodox Christmas.

If you are invited to a Russian home for a meal, bring a small gift.

Male guests are expected to bring flowers.

Do not give yellow flowers. (They symbolise separation)

Do not give a baby gift until after the baby is born. It is bad luck to do so sooner.

Russians often protest when they are offered a gift. Reply that it is just a little something and offer the gift again and it will generally be accepted.
