Bluenose II comingto Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH | A legend of the seas isdue to arrive in Portsmouth Harbor on Fri-day, June 23.
She is the Bluenose II, a replica of one ofCanada's most famed icons.
Renown for her racing prowess, the orig-inal Bluenose schooner sailed her way fromthe fame of winning the International Fish-ermen's Trophy eighteen times to the tailside of the Canadian dime.
The original was lost on a Haitian reef in1946. The Bluenose II was built to the origi-nal’s exact plans by the same shipyard, andwas launched in 1963. She presently tours asa goodwill ambassador of Nova Scotia.
The Bluenose II will depart Boston, Mass-achusetts on June 22, and will arrive offPortsmouth Harbor on June 23 before 10:30a.m. The ship will arrive at the state pier atabout 11:30 a.m. and there will be a welcom-ing ceremony at 1 p.m. There will be a recep-tion on the evening of June 24 at the pier.
She will be open for tours on June 23from 2-8 p.m.; on June 24 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.;and on June 25 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tickets are$6 per person; $20 for a family and childrenunder 12 tour for free.
Bluenose II will depart on Monday, June26 for its next port of call at Portland, Maine,before returning home to Nova Scotia.

HAMPTON | Years ago,Nick Birmbas made apromise to his friend, JackLessard. Somehow, Birmbaswas going to find a way todisplay Lessard’s name onRoute 1.
Lessard finally saw hisname in lights on December22, 2005, when Birmbasopened Jumpin’ Jack’s JavaDouble Express Drive Thru.
Birmbas spent 15 years asco-owner of Lena’s SubShop with his brother, John.When the brothers decidedto sell the business, NickBirmbas took a short breakbefore making good on hispromise and opening thedrive-thru at 836 LafayetteRoad.
Though Nick is soleowner of the business thistime around, John hasn’t
gone far — he currentlyworks as operations manag-er for Jumpin’ Jack’s Java.General Manager AmyBucklain has also joined theBirmbas brother duo.
The drive-thru servesfreshly roasted hot (andiced) coffee, muffins, donuts,bagels and pastries from 5a.m. to 4 p.m. every day ofthe week.
And what about the“double express drive-thru?”
Nick Birmbas says it’sperfect for customers withhectic schedules.
“Everybody is rush, rush,rush these days. Everythingis go, go, go,” he says.
But Jumpin’ Jack’s Javadoesn’t just aim for speedyservice. Birmbas says he hasalways dreamed of owning a‘50s diner. Traces of that old-fashioned vibe are evident in
the drive-thru’s décor andBirmbas’ vision for his busi-ness.
“We’ve gone back to thebasic ways of making coffee.All beans are freshly brewed… We also want to offer cus-tomers good service, greatprices and the right atti-tude.”
But the question stillremains — who is JackLessard and why wouldBirmbas promise to makehim the namesake of hisnewest business venture?
Birmbas said he metLessard while he was atLena’s and Lessard co-owned Scott Pontiac justdown the street.
“Jack is a great guy and agood friend. He takes care ofpeople…he is down-to-earth. He has given so muchto the community,” Birmbassays.
