They are similar in general appearance to other subspecies of the wild turkey and near the body size of the Osceola wild turkey – about four feet tall. They are distinguished from the Eastern and Osceola subspecies by their yellowish-buff or tan tail feathers and tail/rump coverts. Adult males (gobblers) weigh about 20 pounds. Adult females (hens) are both smaller and duller in color than males and average 8 to 12 pounds. Gould’s Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo mexicana) Gould’s wild turkeys exist in very small numbers along the U.S./Mexico boarder in Arizona and New Mexico, but are abundant in northwestern portions of Mexico. The Arizona Game and Fish Department, U.S. Forest Service, the Centro Ecologico de Sonora, the National Wild Turkey Federation and other agencies are working cooperatively to reintroduce Gould’s wild turkeys to restore the population in Arizona and eventually other states where suitable range exists. • They are the largest of the five subspecies and resemble the Merriam’s turkey. Gould’s turkeys differ by having distinctive white tips on the tail feather and tail rump coverts. Merriam’s Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo merriami) Merriam’s wild turkeys are found primarily in the ponderosa pine-covered western mountain regions of the United States. Adult males (gobblers or toms) are clearly distinguished from the Eastern, Osceola and Rio Grande turkeys by the nearly white margins of feathers on the lower back and tail. Merriam’s closely resemble the Gould’s turkey, but their tail margin is not usually quite as pure white, nor is the lighter margin of the tail tip quite as wide. Their size is comparable to Eastern wild turkeys. Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestri) Their range stretches from New England and southeastern Canada to northern Florida in the east to eastern Texas up to eastern South Dakota. Adult males (gobblers or toms) can measure up to 4 feet tall at maturity and weigh more than 20 pounds. Their upper tail coverts, which cover the base of the long tail feathers, are tipped with chestnut brown while their tail feathers are tipped with dark buff or chocolate brown. Adult females (hens) are smaller than males, weighing 8 to 12 pounds. Females have browner feathers than males with less brilliant metallic reflections. Osceola Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo osceola) Named for the famous Seminole Chief Osceola, they are found only on the peninsula of Florida. Osceola turkeys are similar to the Eastern wild turkey, but smaller and darker in color. Their feathers show more iridescent greens and reds, with less bronze than Easterns. The tail coverts and feathers of the Osceola are similar in color to the Eastern. Adult females (hens) are fuller and lighter colored than males. Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris ocellata) Ocellated turkeys are found only in a 50,000-square-mile area comprised of the Yucatan Peninsula range. Body feathers of both male and female birds have a bronze-green iridescent color mixture. • Tail feathers of both sexes are bluish-gray in color with a well-defined, eye-shaped, blue-bronze colored spot near the end followed by bright gold tip. Adult hens weigh about 8 pounds just prior to egg laying and nesting, and 6 to 7 pounds the remainder of the year. During breeding season, adult males weigh 11 to 12 pounds.
