Welcome to Total South Africa (TSA), a company with global links.

Our business is the manufacturing, sales and marketing of a range of petroleum products for the retail, commercial, agricultural and industrial markets.

With a portfolio of 530 service stations located throughout South Africa and 50 in the neighboring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland, TSA is a key player in the Southern African petrochemical market, with products such as jet fuel liquid petroleum gas, lubricants, grease and all grades diesel and petrol.

The company was established in South Africa in 1954, after a Frenchman came to visit and saw a large, well established agricultural industry. Total first entered the market by supplying farmers with lubricants for their machinery. It was in 1956 that Total embarked on the development of a service station network. Today, we have a strategically positioned network of service stations along with our Bonjour and La Boutique convenience stores.

TSA forms part of a leading multi-national French energy company and enjoys a 36,6% share in the Natref Refinery. It has wholly owned subsidiaries in Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (NBS).

The company has its head office in Johannesburg, 22 strategically placed depots, and two regional sales offices – one in Cape Town and the other in Durban.

What bursaries are offered? We offer bursaries to learners who require financial assistance for full time tuition at an FET college or a university in order for them to achieve a formal qualificatione.g. a certificate, diploma or degree.

The aim of the bursary programme is to:• Enhance youth development and employability • Create a pool of talent to feed into the Young Talent Graduate programme• Create a skills pool for scares and critical skills required by the company.

We offer bursaries in the following fields:• Engineering (Mechanical. Industrial and Civil)• Economics• Finance (Accounting or Tax)• Marketing• Environmental Studies• Human Resources• Logistics/Supply Chain Management• Law and Corporate Governance Health and Safety

Who is eligible to apply?Priority consideration for bursaries is given to previously disadvantaged South Africa students who have successfully completed their Grade 12 with a university exemption.Bursaries are also provided to students in their third year studies provided they have achieved an average of 65% or greater for years 1 and 2 and require funding to continue their studies.To be eligible learners should not be receiving any financial assistance from another institution or company. Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 23.

What is an In-Service Programme? • An In-Service programme is practical work experience during studies usually after

two years of theory • Essential work experience that is part of the qualification and necessary to

achieve the qualification• Duration is a year with Practical 1 and 2 (P1 &P2) each taking six months to complete• The practical training is guided by the university curriculum

Who is eligible to apply ? Applications from the following will be considered for In-Service Training Programme:• Students of Total South Africa bursaries programme• Students who have excelled academically in their Semester 1-4 with an average of 65% and require working

experience to allow them to qualify in their respective field of Engineering • Students who have never been employed or participated in any In-Service programme before.

Applications should include the following information to be considered:• Application letter motivating why you should be considered for a graduate programme• Curriculum Vitae with contact details (more than one contact number or address)• Certified copies of recent academic records/transcript and qualifications (if already attained)• Certified copies of identity document.

What is an internship (Workplace Experience?)A graduate programme is a programme for unemployed learners who have concluded their studies successfully in a defined scarce and / or critical skill and who need workplace exposure in order to improve their employment opportunities.

The aim of this internship is to:• Provide individuals with a full and realistic view of workplace culture and expectations.• Integrate academic preparation with professional challenges.

We offer internships in the following fields:• Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial and Civil)• Internal Auditing• Analytical Chemistry• Marketing• Environmental Protection• Human Resources• Logistics/Supply Chain Management• Law and Corporate Governance • Health and Safety

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

What is a Young Graduate Programme (Workplace Experience?)A Young Graduate Programme is an extended innovative and attractive programme that is offered over a period of 18 months after the completion of the 12 months of Internship and it offers further workplace exposure internationally to the previous graduates who have already served their tenure in Internship Programme.

The aim of this programme is to:• Rotate the individuals to countries outside their own, for a rewarding professional international

working experience.• Integrate academic preparation, local and international with professional challenges.

Who is eligible to apply? Applications from the following will be considered for graduate programme:• A bachelor’s graduate, with technical, finance or Commercial backgrounds.• A graduate with a year or less post graduation experience• To apply for position in your country of nationality• Be geographically mobile • Have the right Total attitude attributes – being innovative, easily adaptable

to different environments, flexible, open minded and a good team player. • Be fluent in French and or English

LEARNERSHIPS

What is a Learnership?A learnership is a training programme that facilitates the linkage between structured learning and work experience in order for the individual to acquire a registered qualification. It combines theory and workplace practice into a qualification that is registered in terms of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Learnerships are recommended frame within which to explore new opportunities. They directly address the “how” of the Skills Development Strategy.

What is the aim of a learnership?The aim of a learnership is to:• Provide learners with the necessary skills and experiences to pursue opportunities in the chemical industry.• Bridge the gap between critical and qualified candidates• Increase employment opportunities.

Who is eligible to apply?Unemployed matriculants/youths between the ages of 18 and 35. Applications for learnerships will be aligned to the particular learnership that is offered.

APPRENTICESHIPS

The knowledge and skills acquired through an apprenticeship are identified as both scarce and critical in South Africa.

An Apprenticeship system is a well known technical training system that incorporates both the theoretical and practical components offered in designated trades to achieve an Artisan status.

An apprenticeship is an employment programme in which training is offered as follows:• An apprentice who has completed Nated cources (N1-N6), enter into a four year (4) contract with a company to

learn the skills of the trade.• You undertake theoretical and practical training at an accredited training provider according to a

prescribed curriculum• You undertake workplace experience under full supervision of a qualified Artisan• You undergo a trade Test at an accreditated decentralized training provider at the end of your 4 year period to

qualify as an Artisan (Red Seal)

JOURNEY TO EXPERIENCE

My career with Total South Africa started in 2012 as a Bursary student. I consider myself as a privileged individual who has tremendously benefitted from Total Bursary Scheme of which I appreciate the opportunity given to me.

I feel that the “SKY IS THE LIMIT” both for me and my family. I studied my undergrad in B Com Accounting Science at the University of Pretoria and took part in several Leadership Programmes. Patience, commitment and discipline are key common factors in identifying ones’ true potential and capabilities within the corporate environment. I have always been goal driven, and I attribute achieving my goals to hard work and my ambitious spirit. I am a team player and I’m able to adapt to change as I believe success is in sharing knowledge. Being patient and committed are

key to being disciplined and results orientated. I am passionate about women empowerment and education. I constantly encourage young women of South Africa to concentrate on their education in order for them to achieve their goals.

I started my internship in April 2016, at Total South Africa in the Sales and Marketing: Business Support team. In this role I look forward to all the opportunities that will be presented to me and will surely take full advantage of them.

I would like to express my gratitude to the management of Total South Africa for granting me the opportunity to acquire a qualification while learning a new set of skills and gaining some experience. As this would cement my knowledge and enhance my technical knowhow of applying knowledge. I trust that working at Total will give me the opportunity to grow my career. It is a rewarding and remarkable experience to be part in a company

Hi my name is Portia Mashele ,

I studied at Rhodes University where I completed my Bcom Accounting degree. My journey with Total South Africa (Total) began in 2011 and I must say that just like any journey it was filled with up hills and down hills but I must say it has been one of the best journey‘s I have ever had.

When I received call from Total I was delighted and excited that my fees would be taken care of, they took care of everything from my fees to residence accommodation to handouts and textbooks. Being a Total bursary holder lifted a huge weight off my shoulders because I was able to focus on my studies. My fees were always paid for on time and I did not have to worry about being financially excluded. One of the challenges or pressures I faced as part of my journey was that I had to work hard and pass all my subjects in order to keep the

relationship I have with Total and one day once I had completed my studies become part of this international company.

The highlight of my journey with Total was that as a result of working hard and performing well, I was chosen to attend the Total Summer School in Paris, France in 2013. It was a great opportunity for me because I learnt a lot about the Total Group but not only that, I made new friends from different countries all over the world and some few connections.

After completing my degree I then joined Total as a Financial Control Intern in the Finance and IS department. This was the most challenging part of my journey with Total because I had to learn to apply my theory in a practical environment. I gained some knowledge of how Total South Africa fits into the Total Group and most importantly how

to work with people with diverse personalities in order to achieve a common goal.

I then completed my internship and because of my performance I was chosen to be part of the AAA Young Graduate Program, a new chapter that I am super excited about because I am about to continue my journey with Total in Nairobi, Kenya. My journey with Total has been an experience and a half and I would not trade it for the world.

Hi my name is Boitumelo ,

I started my journey with Total SA in 2014 as an Intern and was assigned a position in the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) department assisting in all environment duties..

I appreciate the amount of exposure and mentorship which I received during my stay in the HSEQ Department. Total SA has not only afforded me the opportunity to learn about environmental management and compliance but in addition the privilege to be exposed to health and Safety.

A year later, I was then presented with the opportunity to broaden my knowledge on how other African subsidiaries function for one year as part of Total’s Young Graduate Programme which is part of the International exposure. Hence, my journey to Total Tanzania began.

The most rewarding element of this program is obtaining experience on how these two subsidiaries enlarged my knowledge on HSEQ

matters both operations (distribution, transport and depot operations) and corporate. It was great experiencing diverse cultures and customs including different work environments. This experience was rewarding for me professionally and personally. On my return a year later, I was appointed permanently as an HSEQ practitioner
