Marie L. Farr

Marie L. Farr, born 6 September 1927 in Vienna, Austria, and a naturalized U.S. citizen, has been a research mycologist in the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture since December, 1958. Prior to that she held temporary appointments as Assistant Botanist at the Science Museum of the Institute of Jamaica (W.I.) and as Mycologist at the Universidade do Recife in Brasil. She obtained a B.S. in agriculture and a M.S. in botany at Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in mycology at the University of Iowa. Her principal research interests are in the taxonomy of the Myxomycetes and of certain families of the Pyrenomycetes (Dimeriaceae and various "black mildew" fungi), on which subjects she has published nearly forty papers. At present she is FN coordinator for the Meliolaceae. In addition she prepared the German translation (1966) of the second edition of "Introductory Mycology" by C. J. Alexo- poulos. Within the Neotropics, she has collected and studied Myxomycetes while em- ployed in Jamaica and Brasil, as participant of the Bredin-Archbold-Smithsonian Bio- logical Survey in Dominica, W.I., and sporadically in other Caribbean islands and Argen- tina. A past Fellow of the Washington Academy of Sciences and member of Sigma Xi and Sigma Delta Epsilon, she currently is a member of the Mycological Society of America, International Association for Plant Taxonomy, and Association for Tropical Biology. She has served as Councilor, Vice-President and on various committees of the MSA, and as Corresponding Secretary of the Washington Botanical Society.
