Myth

Store Description//

noun \mith\

a. usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon.

Myth is a store within a store concept that showcases the designs of world-class Filipino artists like jewelry designer, Bea Valdes; fashion designer, Melissa Dizon; and furniture designer, Kenneth Cobonpue.

The inspiration behind Myth’s design is derived from juxtaposing different elements, a play of light and shadows, lack and excess to create an intimate ambience as if in a museum or an art gallery not just a store.

Using Kenneth Cobonpue exotic fixtures to showcase Bea Valdes’ exquisite jewelry and bags compliments Melissa Dizon’s minimal Eairth collection.

Inspiration & Color Story//

A lthough Bea Valdes receives global interest in her work,

she remains in the Philippines, working with modern Philippine artisans at her Manila based studio.

She choosed Manila over New York, as it is important to maintain a creative environment that allows for the time-intensive embroidery work to be created. The bags, belts, and jewelry can take up to eight weeks to be made. The array of materials that go into a Bea Val-des embellished creation, such as faceted crystals, feathers, semi-precious stones, and glass drops, are sourced from around the world. Valdes maintains her focus on traditional embroidery and continues to support artisans in their craftsmanship.

Eairth, a combination of the elements earth and air, is

exported to the US, Europe and Japan. This line consists of jeans and hand-knitted deconstructed tops, dresses and bags made primarily of cotton jersey. They come in the most natural colors derived from indigenous barks, seeds and leaves of such plants as achuete, talisay and turmeric, among other organic sources.

Designer Melissa Dizon was not a green activist, but had gained deep respect for the environment ever since she took up surfing. In keeping with her core beliefs and her newfound fascination, love of her own country and its people, she has named her line Eairth.

After studying at the Pratt institute, designer Kenneth

Cobonpue returned to his home country the Philippines where he began his business the Interior Crafts of the Islands Inc. in Cebu.

An aspect salient to Cobonpue’s work is that he uses unique and organic raw materials (rattan, bamboo, leather, buri, and abaca) native to Asia. The rendered result is a sleek and contemporary piece of furniture mixed with a modern understanding.

The floorplan acts as the skeletal framework of the store design,

showing the relationships between fixtures, floor area, and physical features at one level of a structure. This gives a visual overview on merchandising elements by how they are placed and determine if the space between fixtures are adequate for the customers to move around. Legends are provided to indicate the fixtures displayed and to indicate highlighted areas in the store such as the feature presentation and the back wall.

T he plan-o-gram serves as a map of fixtures with the products

that illustrate how or where retail products should be merchandised and displayed to increase customer traffic and purchases.

This plan-o-gram designed for Myth shows how Bea Valdes’ collections are located more towards the back of the store to create anticipation and impact while Eairth collections are displayed all around the store to showcase more selection.

T he main purpose of the feature presentation is to portray the

lifestyle of Myth’s target customer. This merchandising technique displays new arrivals and key items featured in the collection. It also gives styling ideas on how to put together a look with the different merchandise sold in the store.

Myth’s feature presentation is designed to capture the customer’s attention as he or she walks in the store. It is located mid-center and placed on a platform to elevate the products on display.

Feature Presentation//

The backwall showcases more merchandise selec-

tion compared to the feature presentation, because this area would allow customers to ex-perience the collection in an open and more comfortable space.

The design concept at work here is to highlight bold

items, like Bea Valdes’ jew-elry and handbags, placing it against raw concrete back-ground. Then on each side is Eairth’s minimal collection set on background suggestive of dancing figures. The backwall will be enllven by backlight to bring out the rustic colors and create an overall romantic mood.
