Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Greatness of His Nature
Now, since [the Lord] is coming to be baptized, he is described [by John] with the words “this is the Lamb of God.” Let us consider how Scripture likes to place words in the appropriate context of facts. By saying in this passage, “This is the one who takes away the sin of the world,” he did not say “the only begotten Son,” or the “Son of God” or “the one who is close to the father’s bosom,” which appear in what he said [in an earlier pas-sage (cf. John 1:6-18)]. Although now it would have seemed right to express the greatness of his nature, in order to confirm the promise of the things he was going to give. But this is not what [John] said. Instead, he called him “lamb,” and with this name he signifies his passion. In fact, he was called lamb and sheep to signify his death when he washed away sin. Since the sin reigned in our mortality, and death was gaining strength in us because of sin, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior came and re-mitted all these things to us. And after destroying death through his death, he also destroyed the sin rooted in our nature because of mortality. Through his promise he made us immortal, and he will -render us so in reality when he defeats sin with the gift of immortality. Theodore of Mopsuestia, Commentary on John
Theodore of Mopsuestia (ca. 350–428), also known as Theodore the Interpreter, was bishop of Mopsuestia, part of modern-day Turkey, from 392 until his death.

Obedient to Love
Our first response to the term “obedience” may not be delight! We want to do things our own way and in our own time. We want to choose what we do and who we are. We want to be “free.” But is that really true? Is there not, paradoxically, a delight in cooperating with others and even in sometimes surrendering our will to theirs? Have you ever been in love, been loved by someone who truly desires your happiness and flourishing? Didn’t you want to do and be what your beloved desired?
Our most startling example of obedience—even to death—is Jesus. “[T]hough he was in the form of God . . . he emptied himself . . . humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross” (Phil 2:6-8). The whole Jesus story is a lived example of obedience. Imagine the Word of God, the second person of the Trinity, willing to become a human infant, helpless and needy, toothless and smelly. Think of him growing up and the stress of adolescence. What was that disappearance in the temple when his parents could not find him? Consid-er the young adult, afire with his life-giving message, yet exhausted and needing a break. Is that not why he sometimes needed to be alone?
The obedience of Jesus was lifelong. His final days, his suffering and death, were the climax of a whole life lived in obedience to the Father. This Sunday’s responsorial psalm captures his willingness to accept whatever the Father willed: “Sacrifice or offering you wished not, / but ears open to obedience you gave me” (see Ps 40:7). Monday’s psalm expands on God’s delight in obedience, which makes it follow nicely after the reading from 1 Samuel: “Does the Lord so delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices / as in obedience to the command of the Lord? / Obedience is better than sacrifice, / and submission than the fat of rams” (1 Sam 15; Psalm 50). Do the stark details in these Scriptures suggest that God wants us to suffer or that our pain delights God? In no way! The point is not suffering; it is obedience. In every human life there are times when choosing obedience to God will inevitably bring suffering in its wake. These and other Scriptures encourage us, even in such pain-ful situations, to challenge fear and choose obedience. The only thing that strengthens us to accept the pain is to remember that we are not alone. God in Jesus accepted suffering for our sake and continues to suffer with us. It is his presence that enables us to be obedient, even in terrible circumstances. Most days, however, the challenge to obedience is not so dramatic. It may be even more difficult to persevere in ordinary times. How long must I be kind to my pesky neighbor? How many days must I care for a sick rela-tive? How often am I called to be patient with a coworker who is always late? Each of us can make our own list of daily annoyances that sometimes become a burden hard to bear. But “obedience is better than sacrifice,” and its reward is unending joy. May that knowledge give us strength. —Sr. Irene Nowell Irene Nowell, OSB, is a member of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery in Atchison, Kansas. She is author of Pleading, Cursing, Praising: Conversing with God through the Psalms and Wisdom: The Good Life.
