A DAY FOR FUN AND GAMES

For the residents of Viswakamal Apartments at R. K. Mutt Road, this year’s annual day was special. Two guests had agreed to visit them, Mylapore MLA R. Nataraj and police inspector Dilli Babu.

For the residents of this three decade old multi story apartment, Jan 19 was a day to celebrate with music, dance and games. It was also the time to listen to an inspiring talk about waste disposal, composting and recycling by the MLA.

Later, the residents thanked the inspector and his team for their service. The evening ended with a sumptuous dinner and a promise to get together as often as possible.

Like every year, this year too, a donation marked Srinivasa Ladies’ Club’s 47th anniversary held at Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Mylapore on Feb 10.

Girija Raman, the secretary, she says, “This year, more than a lakh was donated to Rajan Eye Care Hospital and War Wounded Foundation at New Delhi”.

Girija adds, “We also regularly donate

towards education of school and college girls, many a time we take care of a part of their marriage expenses too. A GOOD REASON TO SMILE There was a little something for each of the 300 odd residents who had gathered at

the park at the Lazarus Church Road Park, R. A. Puram to celebrate ‘Park Day’ this past weekend.

There was a medical and eye camp and games for children. And a little humour for seniors too. Several of them were seen laughing to anecdotes by R. Sekaran, the secretary of Humour Club International, Triplicane Chapter.

The chief guest was Mylapore MLA R. Nataraj, he walked in early on Sunday morning. Call V. Thiagarajan at 9381015243 for details.

SCHOOL ADMISSIONS: LATEST INFORMATION

These themes dominate the art of Chantal Jumel which are now on display in the city

By Our Staff Reporter

Chantal Jumel is from France. She spends at least three months in India and her base is Mylapore. The multi-faceted person - dancer, researcher and artist is currently having an exhibition of her latest paintings at Apparao Galleries in Nungam-bakkam.

Chantal’s works of art are heavily influ-enced by the ‘kolam’ and Indian mythology. And now, the current paintings also hold up her interpretation of Sangam era poetry.

Over the last few years, Chantal has been travelling to Puducherry and Kerala, Rajasthan and West Bengal to study and

record what is called ephemeral art.

During the many weeks that she spends here, working out of a Mylapore hotel, Chantal makes the best of the margazhi sea-son. She is not only walking down the inner streets and lanes of Mylapore, in search of amazing kolams designed outside doorsteps but also making friends and engaging the kolam artists in discussions. She is now a familiar face on the mada streets.

And after the sun goes down, the hotel room is Chantal’s art studio.

Kolams dominate some of her current works of art which are on display at the gal-lery.

Chantal says she is not a trained artist. “I think it is my training in Kathakali that guides the movement of the pen on paper, “ she says. “And my recent reading of English translation of Sangam poems inspired me.”

You can contact Chantal at 8870266191.The art show is on till March 15 and the

works are on sale.

MYLAPORE TIMES 9Mar 3 - 9, 2018

By Our Staff Reporter

Roads are being relaid in several areas in the Mylapore neighbourhood the past weeks. But not all Mylaporeans are happy with the development.

This is because residents who witness civic work taking place on a few local streets wonder why equally damaged streets in the same colony are being left out.

Chennai Corporation says it has its guidelines on relaying streets / roads.

Said an official of Zone 13,“We choose a road depending on the nature and extent of damage on the road. And it should have been atleast three years since the road was relaid last”.

An official at Ward 124 says that a few weeks ago, based on the damage, the local engineers submitted the names of roads that need to be repaired and relaid.

He says, “We have got the sanction for six concrete and 11 bitumen roads. The six concrete roads will be laid at Ramakrishnapuram, from the First to the Sixth Street. We have finished three roads there and hope to complete the rest soon.”

Out of the 11 bitumen roads, the official says work has been completed on Keshava Perumal West Street, V. C. Garden First Street, Alamelumangapuram, Thatchi Arunachalam Street, Lala Thottam and New Street.

Areas where streets are yet to be relaid include Madhava Perumal Koil Street, M. K. Amman Koil Street Fourth Lane, Appadurai Thottam, Nallappan Street and Sengazhuneer Pillayar Koil Street.

Out of the list submitted by local engineers, the civic body is yet to receive the sanction for 12 roads includ-ing Solaiappan Street, Mandaveli Street, Rakkiyappan Street, Nattu Subbarayan Street, Abraham Street, Adam Street, V. C. Garden Second Street, Slaterpuram and Sundara Gramani Street.

A civic agency official at Ward 124 says, “Before the roads are laid, we first make sure the potholes are filled. Concrete roads have a thickness of about three inches. Bitumen roads are laid with small fine jalli (dry aggregates) and tar, they are about 40 mm thick. This is to prevent water from getting in”.

By Bama Ranganathan

It is tough not to get infected by an enthusiasm for electronics after spending some time with S. N. Mahendra. This long-time Alwarpet resident is an electronics whiz and his house is chock full of instruments and gadgets that he has designed himself.

Each item has a story associated with it. And an interesting memory.

A 4-inch screen TV that can turned off and on by clapping shares space with an audio player that can be controlled by radio waves.

On a shelf there is a model of the innards of a old radio – in perfect working condition. The walls are taken up by many models of stereos and audio gadgets that Mahendra has built himself. There is stuff that he uses as a metric.

“I have always been interested in electronics,” he tells me at our meeting. “But it really manifested when I won a prize for making my own gadget when I was in seventh grade.”

His father was also into electronics and Mahendra recalls leaning a lot by watching him work on radios and appliances. “Dad would just do it in a matter-of-fact way . . many times he wouldn’t even charge people for it,” he says.

Mahendra started doing small projects by himself. His parents recognised his passion and supported it - allowing him to buy the materials he needed and borrow the books that would guide him.

“My mother got me this stereo back in the early 80s. It was quite pricey, about Rs. 800. I remember that she paid three installments for it.”

Electronics became a passion after his mother passed away in 1988. “It was so sud-den that all our lives changed overnight. My younger brother took up a job in a bank and I started working in this field”, he recounts.

Designing stereos, repairing audio systems and radios, making his own devices – Mahendra undertakes a variety of assignments.

Mahendra is a collector too. There are rows and rows of books and journals, on numerous subjects and some date back to the 1940s. Some are photocopied collections – copied painstakingly over many visits to city libraries and then bound.

This is also true of his CD collection. Classic English albums rub shoulders with Chinese pop; Ilayaraja hits with vintage Hindi melodies.

He pulls out a case and says, “This pack houses a special device.” He flips it open to

reveal a 4” x 2” ROM (read only memory). “This was used before keyboards became so fancy. It is loaded with more than 1000 sounds. ROMs were used by film music directors in the recording studios.”

Mahendra was also a regular speaker at some schools – Bhavans,

Chettinad Vidyashram, to name a few. “I used to take classes in electronics for

these kids. We would make small projects to make them interested in the subject”, he says.

His passion has led to lasting friend-ships. “I have repaired radios and designed sound systems for many musicians who are great friends”, he says.

He cannot stop himself from inventing small stuff for practical purposes. He used to work long hours but has slowed down

the past few years.Customising stereo sets keeps him busy.

He also wants to showcase at home, his grand collection of radio valves - the oldest is some 100 years old.

And now, he wants to devise a course on basic electronics. “Youngsters should learn the practical side of this subject. Book learn-ing can only do so much. So I am planning a course for students,” says Mahendra.

You can contact Mahendra at 9840179090.

Electronics ManAlwarpet resident S. N. Mahendra designs stuff that can amaze you. And are great utilities too. All these are made from simple electronic parts.

Mahendra was on Marina beach the day the tsunami struck Chennai. When he saw the extent of the damage caused by the waves, he decided to make a warning system for such natural calamities.

So he made a small device, which when buried in the sand around a building, will send out an alarm when there are vibrations in the earth. “ You place 4 such devices around your house and it is a reliable warning system. And it would cost under Rs. 200!,” he says.

His work has taken him to many places - one place was Officer’s Training Academy in Chennai. “I worked with soldiers there and taught them many practical things that they could create wherever they were deployed”, he says.

How to repair the walkie-talkie or radio sets with basic tools was one lesson. Mahendra then made a stethoscope that can be used to record the heartbeat and with minimal tweaking, can also be used to record distant sounds - of birds, animals or people.

The waterfront of Marina beach sported a festive atmosphere on March 1, on the day of Masi Magam. The deities from several temples - Mylapore and rest of the city - were transported to the seaside to perform rituals associated with this day. Thousands of people took a dip in the sea - it is believed that taking a bath in water in a sea or tank on this day will help one attain moksha.

In Mylapore, some 1500 people made the procession from Sri Kapali Temple to the beachside.

THIS COLONY WORKS HARDTO ADDRESS CIVIC ISSUESSegregating waste at home is making a big difference. The practice is catching on.

By Preeti Srivatsan

For years, the residents of Justice Sundaram Road and Rama Rao Road, Mylapore watched helplessly as their street corner turned into a garbage dump. Despite raising the issue several times individually with the Chennai Corporation and a private agency which clears waste, the eyesore and stink overpowered their lives.

The bins were overflow-ing, the waste spread across the street and often, the stench of rotting kitchen waste was revolting.

And then, some residents decided that ‘self help’ would make a change. However small the change would be.

In August of last year, the residents of four streets in that area, Justice Sundaram Road, Rama Rao Road, Ramachandra Road and East Abhiramapuram 2nd Street decided to come together to address the issues.

They formed a Whatsapp group and followed it up with a meeting. A name was given to their association, Myla Pure, coined by a resident, Baskar Seshadri, of Rama Rao Road. It was time to ad-dress the garbage menance. C. R. Ashok, a resident of Ranga Road runs a business at Justice Sundaram Road. He says, “In addition to the garbage issue we also wanted to address issues like water-logging during rains and get the storm water drains cleared. We included RamKy ( private waste clearing agency) and other civic authorities in our group and kept them in the loop of what needed to be

done. We also encour-aged the residents to segregate waste.” The result is now evident - street-side bins do not overflow as often as before. Says Ashok, “The occasional hiccups continue but we see a change. It is challenging but a bin-less street is our goal”. Uma Subramanian, a resident of Justice Sundaram Road, says

that over 90% of the residents at these streets are segregat-ing waste now. Adds Uma, “In my apartment complex, all the residents have been adding their wet waste to a big gunny bag for more two months now. The first lot of that waste has broken down well and will be used as com-post for plants shortly.”

The dry waste like paper and plastic, is collected once a week. Over 250 kgs of dry waste has been handed over to the waste collector in 10 weeks. The waste-collector, also from this neighbourhood comes by to collect the paper, plastic and glass.

Uma and her neighbours are discussing plans to set up a compost pit in the locality.

She says, “In our complex, we don’t have too much space for a pit but we do plan to acquire a couple of composting bins soon.”

The community has other plans. Baskar Seshadri says, “We want our children to get together and paint the public walls and residents to plant more trees. Plus, set up a bench on the pavement - for seniors who want to sit down after a long walk or chat with friends they meet on the street.”

If you wish to learn a few tips from this commu-nity or want to lend a hand with your own experience, contact Uma at 43535534.

Appreciation for MLAMany teenagers used to play

football on our street after 7 p.m. and make much noise. They even jumped inside houses to retrieve the ball - in my case, flower pots were broken. No amount of pleas to the boys had effect so we wrote to the Mylapore MLA.

There was quick action and the boys have stopped playing football and disturbing us. We appreciate the MLA’s prompt action.

On services for senior citizens . . .

I attended a meeting hosted by Prayojana at Mylapore Club on how senior citizens could invest their money. This meet served seniors very well and besides being useful also created goodwill and fellowship. More such meets are welcome.

Voices of visually impaired women

Nandini Voice for The Deprived, a Chennai-based NGO that I head, recently organised a meeting in Adyar to give an opportunity to visually impaired women to discuss the problems confronting them. 14 women participated.

Here are the key points raised - 1. Need for free hostels. 2. Need

for support for marketing efforts of women who sell small products. 3. Need for sustained support by community. 4. Need for attitudinal change among people who make donations and offer support but do not care to interact.

5. Reservation policy - need for private sector organisations to employ at least 1% of the total employees from the visually impaired women pool in work where they are employable. 6. Self employment - Government should evolve a scheme exclusively for visually-impaired women.

Sad state of E-Seva centers

After reading about the services of E-Seva centres, I decided to use them. Recently, I was at the E-Seva centre at L. B. Road, Adyar, to print my Smart Card for drawing my ration supplies. The printer did not function here.

So I went to Chennai Corporation zonal office E-Seva centre - the printer had a defect. Then I went to the centre in Sastri Nagar 8th Cross - here the printer ribbon was defective. This is the condition of E-Seva centres. Does any senior officer every go around and check their functioning?

Relaying streets: why are parts of a street not repaired?

Chennai Cor-poration has been re-laying streets in Abhiramapuram. To the dismay of the resi-dents of the other end of First Street, which is Subramaniam Street, while one section of the hstreet has been repaired and tarred, besides the neighbouring streets, our section was left out - the northern side of Subramaniam Street. Why are streets selectively repaired and relaid?

Uncleared garbage in Mandaveli colony

The area around Third Cross Street and Thiruvengadam Street in Ramakrishna Nagar has not been cleared of waste for many days. Garbage is seen lying around. We have made several complaints to Chennai Corporation but no action has been taken.

Revoke ‘One Way’ system in R. A. Puram

A month has gone by of the trial run of the One Way traffic system in Chamiers Road and TTK Road (south end) besides St. Mary’s Road in R. A. Puram. This system has caused much pain to residents in this part of R. A. Puram which is mainly a residential zone.

Instead of this circular One Way traffic route, a simple ‘No Right turn into TTK Road from St.Mary’s Road will suffice.

A similar, longer One Way system was introduced a few years ago in TTK Road and C. P. Ramasamy Road and this too caused similar hardships to pedestrians and small vehicles and the system was re-voked. I hope the Traffic Police heed the suggestion.

It was the day when the sky was the world’s amazing work of natural art. Monday. In recent times, never has the sky above us patterned itself into such an amazing spread of cloud and colour.

Many had cared to look up and stare. And their photos were on Facebook.

My friend and I were on East Coast Road that afternoon. We had stopped for lunch at one of our favourite food joints, not far from where Buckingham Canal joins the Marakkanam water body.

You are assured of a decent fish curry-and-rice combo here. We were not disappointed. And then, as we lazily looked up, we gazed at the sky.

We weren’t lazing around that Monday. My friend works closely with a couple of schools on this coast and I had accompanied him when he was visiting them that afternoon.

At one high school which is run by a small group of nuns inside a kuppam, a special class was on.

The nuns were carrying on with a long-standing practice - getting all the girls and boys who were to appear for the Std.X state exam to spend the evening hours in ‘revision’ mode.

It helped these children focus - the kuppam offered lots of distractions.

That evening the nun who heads the high school section invited me to talk to these students who had just finished having tea and snacks.

‘A few words of motivation’, the nun suggested. And the next twenty minutes created an experience

that remains with me now.We had a conversation - how could meditation and

quiet help prepare for the day’s exam, how best could we answer a question paper, how could we go about choosing the next step in education and how mastering a few skills promised a great future.

It is that time of the year when hundreds and thousands of young boys and girls sit for an exam that makes or breaks their life.

My Monday experience was not the first. Nor was it transitory.

The many experiences I have had in small schools makes me realise that there is much that a community, a neighbourhood can contribute if we choose to step beyond the school gates.

Help organise art and craft sessions on weekends. Make sport and games a bit exciting. Teach at special classes. Donate for food and drink. Pay for a child’s fee.

Last year, the Mylapore Times Charitable Trust helped support some 30-plus children in the neighbourhood - they had scored well in the state exams but needed funds to move ahead. Many Mylaporeans donated for this cause. These donations were timely.

This campaign will restart in a few weeks time. And we hope you and your friends will do your bit.
