It is still Summer, but MYC has turned the corner towards Fall. MYC’s Summer Sailing Camp has concluded, the Junior sailors are back at school. Before you know it we will be hosting Fall regattas. But let’s stop and consider all the more we have to complete before the true end of Summer – Labor Day.

There is still 2 more Rum Races on Friday Nights, Two more Small Boat Sundays, Two more Wednesday Bar Chit races, Two more Adult sailing Classes, A WOW race and let us not forget the Commodore’s Full Moon Regatta August 21st. Social event wise there are several private parties, A trivia night, a burn-it, and a Seminar (Iwill be presenting Race Starts and Tactics 8/26) on consecutive Thursdays. Please go to MYC’s website and check out the Month of AUGUST! Also remember on Labor Day weekend, put on your Dancin’ shoes and participate at MYC’s Black & White Dinner & Dance.

Thank you, Stephanie Ring and Sarah Sharinga for the quality job of teaching our Juniors this summer. Everyone I have talked to and from what I witnessed, only good things came from this venture. Hopefully these kids will grow to have such a passion of sailing they will leave home early, hop on a yacht and crew (cruise) to the Med and get caught up in all the glory of working for pennies as rail meat or deck swab. IT IS SOMUCH FUN! Or they will grow to understand the independence in life, have more respect of Mother Nature and the care for our natural resources.

The Sailing Education program has been such a benefit to MYC, teaching the skill to youngster and ADULTS, to appreciate the sport and recreation of sailing, promoting new memberships and creating a revenue stream for the club. The MYC Board has decided to take a bigger step towards education and the promotion of sailing. There is a community need to offer a Home School program as well as individual sailing lessons. MYC is now searching for a full time instructor who will also support the daily operations of the club. Corey Small is trying his best to find a recruit, maybe an instructor who has finished their summer in New England and is looking to come south to stay warm. If you should know of someone interested in working and possibly living at MYC let Corey know ( a job description should be published soon).

I would like to thank Pat Reilly and Paul Henderson who saw the request for Laser parts in the previous Tell-tale and who each donated their gear to MYC. MYC is collecting a number of dinghies which are available for use, especially for our Small Boat Sundays. Please use the QR scan when you do take out an MYC owned boat.

I would like to thank Del Wiese for organizing the Ohio Shoal Race this past month. Though it did not have a large attendance, just think how many fewer people would have enjoyed the July 31st Atlantic sail if he had not stepped up.

There is no better way to cool off this summer than tacking up and down the Indian River, take your boat out. Use the club, get involved.

All slips at the club have been assigned. If you want a slip on the docks, you must first fill out and submit the waiting list application along with a $15 check and leaveit in the Docks mailbox. The application can be downloaded from the MYC website. Once you’re on thewait list you will be notified via email of vacancies. Of course the longer you have been on the wait list will determine your likelihood of getting a spot. We also have boat fit requirements for each particular slip.

As mentioned last month, heavy rains will trip the GFI on the docks; especially, if your line where it plugs into the boat is not watertight. Please check your connection to make sure it is protected. A plastic bag can be used to shield it from rain intrusion, secured with rubber bands. A connection inside your boat – such as in the lazarette to keep it away from the elements – is an even better solution.

Now is the time to get ready for hurricane season which is more active towards the end of August thru October. You can get prepared by checking your lines, adding extra lines and procuring what you might need now. Better to prepare now and avoid the last minute rush if a storm approaches. Hopefully, we will not be in the sights for any storms.

The club has reserved the Tides banquet facilities for theCommodores Ball. The Ball, for the edification of new members, traditionally occurs on the first Saturday following the General meeting in February. In 2022, the date has been set for February 5th. So reserve the date. The Commodore Committee will begin its planning in late October to provide a seamless evening of fun and enjoyment. If you want to contribute and be a part of thecommittee, please send me an email. Last year we had tocancel due to the pandemic, hopefully we will not be denied this year. – Keep safe.

Big month planned for the house this August! The A/C unit for the clubhouse Bathrooms is scheduled to be replaced this month along with the chimney being cleaned and inspected – hard to believe that winter is coming.

You should have received your new MYC Directory andparking stickers. The lower parking area at the club is byparking permit only, so please put your sticker on or park in the upper parking area. Oh, while on the topic of parking, the Private Property Tow Agreement with Premier Towing has been renewed. There has been a problem with nonmembers parking at the club to go fishing, ….. and this should help remedy the issue.

Also, please do not park on the grass out by the street, there is plenty of parking in the old tire lot. It is MYC policy to not park on the grass and it makes good sense as part of our effort to improve the curb appeal of the club, thank you for your help.

I would like to thank and recognized the following people for their continued support of our sailing club –

• THANK YOU, Page Profit, for donating the BBQ that is now on the Back Deck of the MYC! Go Ohio State!

• THANK YOU, John Martin, for getting and installing a pair of binoculars in the bar area of the club house!

• THANK YOU, Robert Scott for your continuing support of House and changing out the A/C filters

• THANK YOU! Robert Scott and Dean Butler for trying to unclog the bathroom toilets (YUK) that were backed up and then having to call Roto-Rotor to Save the Day just before the Baby Shower – do we need a Golden Plunger Award?

• THANK YOU, Dean Butler, for your continuing

efforts and keeping the bugs at bay around the club!

• And THANK YOU to all the MYC members thatvolunteer, your initiative and volunteerism, it is greatly appreciated!

The 4th of July had the highest total. The two Rum Race Fridays sales were approximately double the two non-Rum Race Fridays sales.

Our beer and liquor distributors are continuing to have problems with deliveries. They can’t find enough driversto meet demands, so they are cutting back on the frequency of deliveries or even stopping deliveries altogether. Thanks to Page Proffitt for going over to Orlando this week to pick up an order. We finally have Guinness back in stock.

As always, if anyone has any suggestions, questions, or comments (especially about ways to encourage social distancing), please contact me, either at the club or by phone or e-mail. My e-mail is [email protected], my cell phone is (321) 794-7040.

Since July is traditionally a month for summer travels, attendance fell off for many of our Thursday Night events. Trivia on July 8 was cancelled due to lack of attendance. The Burn-It on July 15 saw light attendance as well. In contrast, though, Grant Ball presented a seminar on boat maintenance on July 22 to a packed house. Great Job, Grant! A rare fifth Thursday offered a

movie night, organized by Page Proffitt. Thursday nightevents will continue as we move into the fall, optimistic for increased attendance.

The Black & White Party is postponed until September 4 due to a scheduling conflict for the Great Room. Dance lessons will resume Tuesday night August 10 andwill be held on Tuesdays through August 31, pending the Club’s response to the current spike in COVID-19 cases.

Participation and volunteerism are the two keys to the success of these events. We invite everyone’s help, but in any case, please come and enjoy the events! So on that note, we’d to thank everyone who has joined in the fun!!!

We have the following items on inventory in the Bosun’s Locker. See Dean Butler or Frank Hujber to shop…

July rolled through with ongoing series of races – rum race, WOW series continued, small boat Sunday and Wednesday night series. No full moon in July basically was the same day as the rum race. Our last race of July was the Ohio shoal’s ocean race organized by Del Weise. We had four boats participating at the start there were exceptionally light winds which built out of the south all day gusting above 20 on the final leg. There were some challenges. Chances R withdrew on the second leg due to blistering heat and a dead downwind

leg and no spinnaker and a shortage of beer. Clyde and Dean decided to make it fun and just sail around all afternoon reaching out to the weather buoy and back to Port Canaveral. That left Epic, Serenity and Sweet Dream. All the boats had eyes on each other for most of the race trading the lead on several legs. Sweet Dream finished just before 10 pm followed by Serenity and Epic. Epic may have had some sort of rudder issue which caused him to fall off the pace. For our next Ocean adventure we will have two classes – one that will be a Racing triangle and the other a shorter out and back, any other ideas?

August was off to a great start with five 420’s and four lasers with one lone opti for small boat Sunday. So, graba 420, sunfish or laser and come out to sail on the 15th!

This month we have the Annual Commodores’ full moon regatta. This will be more of an event. it is on the same weekend as the rum race and WOW race earlier in the day of the 21st. It will be a busy weekend of racing. Get your crews in place for a great evening. Please contact me or Pat Lambert for details. You can sign up now. The NOR is on the website.

August was to be the last month of the bar chit series. We will be continuing it through the end of September with possibly one more race during fall race week in October.

Fall Race Week starts with small boats on October 16 and 17th with activities all week culminating on the following weekend 23 and 24th so save the dates! On a side note, the small boat will be part of the grand prix series for lasers.

Our next big event on September 19th is the Youth Regatta with Phil Spletter heading that up. He is on it and the NOR is posted on regatta networks. I will be working with his team to organize and support. Please get involved. The last one was tons of fun with all the kids sailing. Super cool to see so many young sailors around the club.

Here is an update for the ongoing saga with the power boat fleet. This month all the boats required some attention. The Carolina skiff’s outboard was not functioning at more than an idle after some bad fuel was added to the tank. Page had gotten it started after the incident, but the carburetor had to be replaced. I had the

Melbourne Yacht Club Tell-Tale AUGUST 2021 p. 4 / 7

engine serviced at the same time and a new fuel water separator with drain installed. The skiff has a new bimini top as well. The whaler had a “clanking noise” and to Sara’s, our amazing sailing instructor, credit she stopped the engine and got towed in. Fortunately, it was a simple fix. The Zinc was loose and hitting the prop. Thanks to new member Bob Weidenhaefer for the multiple tows with his dinghy while volunteering at the sailing camp. The Key Largo has been overheating all last week and had to be towed in one day as well. Dean Butler towed it down to the repair shop with the replacement parts on order that should solve the overheating issue. It will be up and running the second week of August. All the boats need a good scrubbing and a refresh for the bottom paint. I was considering acquiring some jack stands to assist this process unless we can borrow some…..Anyone?. The engine we ordered in February to replace the whaler’s 90 is still nothere, when Dean checked in last week it is still on backorder.

Its rainy season so please check on the boats and bail one out if you see it flooded or text or call me 321 720 5595. Thanks to all of you Dean, Robert, Paul, Corey and Commodore Noble who have been keeping an eye out.

MYC Club Boats Thanks to everyone who is making use of the club boats. That’s what they are there for!

And thanks to everyone who is recording their usage. Just scan the QR code and complete the form on your phone. It only takes a minute and it is a big help for monitoring and managing the boats.

August concludes the club's summer camp program. Rather than just rain superlatives, why not look at the numbers for this summer:

• We had 8 weeks of camp, 105 camp attendees, and 33 repeat attendees.

• 22 of those camp attendances were taken by club members.

• We had 20 different member volunteers and 7 non-member volunteers who volunteered approximately 960 hours.

• 6 of those volunteers took kids out on their keelboat for a day of big boat sailing.

We will be ready for next summer, with refreshed sailing dinghies and powerboats. The club learned a lot from this summer's camp program and will be introducing new and exciting camps.

Looking forward to August, sailing education is still soliciting applications for a coach position for homeschool and afterschool sailing programs. We are also laser focused (yup) on getting the club's new fleet of 3 lasers in tip-top shape, with at least one competitionworthy setup. If you are a laser racer, please lend your expertise on what class legal accessories can be outfitted, and how to get our boats race-ready. See you on the water,
