High School In the US high school is made up of four grades from 9th grade to 12th grade.

It is a place where everybody in town meets, because as it is a small town

everybody goes to the same school.

School starts at 7:30 in the morning and finishes at 2:30 in the afternoon.

People have their own schedule and can choose the classes they want based on

a special criteria. However, this gives them more freedom.

Grades in the US are based on letters or percentages.

People in high school have a great responsibility on making their high school the

best in everything.

Wayland High School My high school had around 850 students and it was renewed two years ago.

Almost all WHS graduates attend a 2 or 4-year college; the percentage of

college-bound graduates is upwards of 95%. Among the most popular colleges

attended by graduates in recent years are University of Massachusetts

Amherst, Boston College, George Washington University, Brown University,

Brandeis University, Harvard University, Syracuse University, University of

Vermont, and Boston University.

Wayland High School My experience in this high school was amazing.

My teachers were graduates in Brown, Yale, or Stanford which made classes

more interesting.

As an exchange student, people try to help you as much as they can.

As teams are made up from people of all grades, everybody no matter the age is

very united.

Wayland teams have very good records and they are supported and funded by

the whole community. This is because they know their kids will play on the

varsity teams.

Sports in high school Sports in high school are divided in seasons: fall, winter and spring.

Every season offers different sports.

People usually play two sports, but some do up to three.

This means that everybody play sports.

In my stay in the US, I played soccer, wrestling and lacrosse.

I tried to play sports that I could not play in Spain.

Soccer. I arrived August 19th and i started preseason on the 21st. It was really hard,

because I practiced for 5 hours a day from 7am to 9:30 am and from 4pm to

6:30pm.

After I made the varsity team, a week after I arrived, I broke my foot on the first

preseason game.

That was hard for me, because people make friends on team, however I asked to

be on the coaching staff and we ended up winning the state title in a very

intense game.

Wrestling. It was probably the best team in the high school with a record of over 30 titles.

Wrestling is a combat sport involving grappling type techniques such as clinch

fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds.

This sport was founded during the greek empire 25 centuries ago.

Lacrosse. Lacrosse is a native american sport played between two teams using a small

rubber band and a long-handled stick called the crosse.

As it is a contact sport you need protection equipment as padded gloves, elbow

pads and a shoulder pads and a helmet.

It is a very fast sport and requires a lot of practice.

It was my favorite sport.

Travel Distances in the US are very large so people have a different perception of

distances.

During this year, I travelled to New York City, Washington D.C., Vermont and New

Hampshire.

Page 20: My year in the U.S. · My high school had around 850 students and it was renewed two years ago. Almost all WHS graduates attend a 2 or 4-year college; the percentage of college-bound

New Hampshire and Vermont. They are situated in the northernmost region of the country and they are a tourist

attraction for skiers and other winter sports players.

I traveled there a couple of times and I learned how to ski.

My family I was in a half-korean half-italian family. This is very common, because the United

States of America were based on immigration. I had a younger brother and two

younger sisters.

They had a dog and a ferret.
