My Summer Writing Journal

Instructions:
Well done! You have decided to take on the summer journal challenge! This will help you practice the writing skills you learned in first grade, keep track of your summer adventures, and help prepare you for second grade. You should print off the whole document, making sure to print off several copies of the last page. Anytime you need more space to write, print off more pages. The first grade teachers suggest that you write at least once a week. You may sketch a picture first, add color, and then write about your picture. When you are writing, consider the list on the next page. Keep your journal in a safe place and bring it back to your first grade teacher during the Lowes Island Open House. She will have a special prize for you! Good luck…and have fun writing!
When you’re writing….
• check for spaces between your words
• sound out your words the best you can and check that your first grade sight words are spelled correctly (they are
listed on the next page)
• check for two-thumbs up sentences (a capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end)
• make sure you have at least 5 complete sentences (is it a complete thought?)
• check for describing words
• re-read the whole piece to make sure it sounds right and makes sense
