Welcome to Ashland Middle School Our school district’s vision is that students, parents, teachers, and community work to-gether to ensure each other’s success. We hope to make that vision live each day at Ashland Middle School. To ensure each stu-dent’s success, we will strive to create a school climate that builds self-esteem and to create a school program that develops each stu-dent’s intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being. To ensure each parent’s success, we will strive to communicate regularly and to help you foster your child’s growth outside of school. To ensure each teacher’s success, we will strive to provide him or her with the resources and structures that allow him or her to take action that helps students. To ensure the community’s success, we will strive to provide evidence that our students are developing the values and skills needed to lead our city, state, nation, and world. Each of us - students, parents, school staff, and community - should feel ownership in creating our school’s program and be part of helping each other achieve our individual visions.

School Hours Monday - Thursday 8:45 - 3:00 Fridays 9:30 - 3:00

Campus supervision begins at 8:15 a.m. Monday through Thursday and at 8:50 a.m. on Fridays. Students who arrive to school early may go to the large gym, library, cafeteria, or commons. Classrooms, halls, and other facilities are available to students at 8:35 a.m., Monday through Thursday and at 9:20 a.m. on Fridays. Students not involved in an after-school activ-ity or under the direct supervision of an authorized adult should leave the school following the end of classes.

Bell Schedules Bell schedules vary according to grade level and team assign-ment. Homeroom teachers will distribute schedules during the first week of school.

Grade Level Classes Sixth Grade Los Ositos is the sixth grade team at AMS and includes six teachers working together in two person teams.

Each classroom of students is assigned to one primary teacher who will be the homeroom teacher and will teach the core in-struction in either Language Arts and Social Studies or Math and Science. The partner teacher will provide instruction in the other core subjects not taught by the homeroom teacher.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Blended Teams Seventh and eighth graders are grouped together for Lan-

guage Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math and Spanish classes. Students spend the majority of their day to-gether on these teams with their team of teachers.

Currently there are three 7th and 8th grade teams, Amistad, Ami-gos Nuevos and Rio Del Fuego.

School Policies and Information ing is a list of the specific activities and surveys covered under this requirement: • Collection, disclosure, or use of personal information for mar keting, sales or other distribution. • Administration of any protected information survey not funded in whole or in part by ED. • Any non-emergency, invasive physical examination or screen ing as described above. Parents who believe their rights have been violated may speak with the Director of Student Services, Ashland Public Schools, or file a complaint with: Family Policy Compliance Office U.S. Department of Education 400 Maryland Avenue, SW Washington, D.C. 20202-5901 Communicable Diseases Parents of a student with a communicable or contagious disease are asked to telephone the school nurse so that other students who have been exposed to the disease can be alerted. A student with school “restrictable” disease is not allowed to come to school while the disease is contagious. This restriction is removed by the written statement of the local health officer or a licensed physician (with the concurrence of the local health officer) that the disease is no longer communicable to others in the school setting. For those diseases indicated by an asterisk (*) below, the restriction may be removed by a school nurse. These diseases include Chicken pox*, diphtheria, measles, meningitis, mumps*, lice infestations*, whooping cough, plague, rubella, scabies*, staph infections*, strep infections*, and tuberculosis. Parents with questions should con-tact the school nurse.

Physical Education and The Arts Every other day, for 65 minutes, students will take Physical Edu-cation (PE). On the opposite day, students will have one term of health and 2 terms of an applied arts class. Applied arts include TV Production, General Music, and Art. Band and Orchestra classes Beginning band starts in 6th grade and begin-ning orchestra continues from their 5th grade classes in elementary. These classes are year long and are normally taught during the INC period. Some students may be taking band during their PCAT class, depending on the number of students enrolled in band and the need for more classes. Individual Needs Classes INC. meets every other day for 65 minutes. It is a graded, one credit class that allows teachers to respond to the individual needs of students. It will enhance student learning and increase person-alization of educational instruction at AMS. Students may be as-signed to a different INC. class each trimester or the same one all year. In addition to the rich instruction, support and challenge that students receive in their other classes, INC will provide:

1. Opportunities for increased academic challenge and enrichment.

2. Support for students that need additional time to learn core academic skills.

3. Teachers will assign student to their INC period based on previous teachers’ recommendations, classroom performance, as well as results on assessments.

3. Instructional material used as part of the educational curricu-lum.

These rights transfer to from the parents to a student who is 18 years old or an emancipated minor under State law.

Ashland School District will review relevant Board Policies (JOA), in consultation with parents through building site councils, regarding these rights, as well as arrangements to protect student privacy in the administration of protected information surveys and the collection, disclosure, or use of personal information for mar-keting, sales, or other distribution purposes. Ashland School Dis-trict will directly notify parents of these policies at least annually at the start of each school year and after any substantive changes. Student Lockers Students may be assigned a locker by their homeroom teacher to use throughout the school year. Even though combinations have been changed, lockers are not secure. Stu-dents should leave money and expensive or valuable items at home. The school does not assume responsibility for student property in lockers or any other place on campus. Students agree to accept the responsibility to

maintain the confidentiality of the locker combination and to keep the locker in good order. Students who wish to have their locker combination changed will be asked to pay a $15.00 ser-vice charge. Students also must have written permission from a parent or guardian authorizing the change. Although students are assigned lockers, the lockers remain the property of the school and are to be kept clean by students. The school has the right to search lockers under certain conditions relating to the safety, security, and orderly conduct of school. Items that are disruptive, dangerous, or illegal may be seized. All property taken from lockers will be returned to the true owner, parents, or proper authorities at an appropriate time. When possible and practical, students will be present for any searches or locker inspections. Confiscated materials not claimed by the end of the school year will be discarded or given to charity. Student Backpacks Students should keep their backpacks or other “carry-alls” in their locker during the school day. Backpacks and “carry-alls” are subject to the same search and seizure guidelines as school lockers.

School Policies and Information If you do not want Ashland School District to disclose directory information from your child's education records without your prior written consent, you must notify the District in writing by Octo-ber 1, 2008. Ashland School District has designated the following information as directory information: • Student's name • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports • Address • Telephone listing • Weight and height of members of athletic teams • Electronic mail address • Photograph • Degrees, honors, and awards received • Date and place of birth • Major field of study • Dates of attendance • Grade level • The most recent educational agency or institution attended Footnotes: 1.These laws are: Section 9528 of the ESEA (20 U.S.C. 7908), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (P.L. 107-110), the education bill, and 10 U.S.C. 503, as amended by section 544, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002 (P.L. 107-107), the legislation that provides funding for the Nation's armed forces. Page 28

School Policies and Information Annual Notice for Directory Information for Ashland Public Schools The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Fed-eral law, requires that Ashland School District, with certain excep-tions, obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of person-ally identifiable information from your child's education records. However, Ashland School District may disclose appropriately des-ignated "directory information" without written consent, unless you have advised the District to the contrary in accordance with District procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Ashland School District to include this type of in-formation from your child's education records in certain school publications. Examples include: • A playbill, showing your student's role in a drama production; • The annual yearbook; • Honor roll or other recognition lists; • Graduation programs; and • Sports activity sheets, such as for wrestling, showing weight

and height of team members. Directory information, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent's prior writ-ten consent. Outside organizations include, but are not limited to, companies that manufacture class rings or publish yearbooks. In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies (LEAs) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three directory information categories - names, ad-dresses and telephone listings - unless parents have advised the LEA that they do not want their student's information disclosed without their prior written consent.(1)

School Policies and Information school or at lunch or break. Students who cannot make it to class within the allotted passing time will be subject to the rules and restrictions of the classroom teacher. *Teachers or administrators will call parents to arrange times for before or after school detention.

PE/Athletics Students may be excused from physical education for up to three consecutive days for illness or in-jury. After the third day of non-participation, the school requires that a medical excuse signed by a medical doctor or by a nurse, under the supervision of a doctor, be pre-

sented to the attendance office if non-participation is to continue. In order to be eligible to participate in athletics and after school activities, such as concerts and parties, students must attend all classes on the day of the concert or activity. Exceptions may be made by prior approval of an administrator if the student is attend-ing a school-related activity during the school day or seeing a phy-sician. Gym Clothes Students must provide their own gym clothes according to guide-lines given the first day of PE or fitness class. Telephones Phones are available in every classroom. Students should ask for teacher permission before using the phone.

Health Room The health room is available for emergencies. Stu-dents who become ill should report to class, if pos-sible, before checking in with the Nurse’s office. When the nurse is gone, students should go to the south office, the attendance office, or the main of-fice. If sufficient recovery is not made during one class period, arrangements will be made for the student to go home.

Medications All medications (prescription and nonprescrip-tion) must be brought to the nurse’s office in the original container, with written instructions and a parent signature. Self-medication is not allowed in grades K-8, except for asthma inhal-ers and epi-pens which must still be checked in through the nurse’s office.

Emergency Numbers Every student must have an emergency number that the school can call when a child is ill or injured and a parent cannot be contacted. The number should be given on the registration form or to the of-fice secretary as soon as possible. Injuries Injuries, which may or may not need the attention of a doctor, should be reported immediately to the teacher and to the atten-dance office. If medical attention is needed, parents will be con-tacted, if possible, so that they may arrange for treatment. Lost and Found The lost and found is located in the hallway outside the cafeteria.

School Policies and Information One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is

disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational inter- ests. A school official is a person employed by the School as an ad-ministrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff mem- ber (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a per son or com-pany with whom the School has contracted to per form a special task (such as an attorney, audi-tor, medical con- sultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an offi- cial committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks.

A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an educa-tion record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

Upon request, the School discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a stu- dent seeks or intends to enroll. [NOTE: FERPA requires a school district to make a reasonable attempt to notify the par ent or student of the records re-quest unless it states in its an nual notification that it intends to forward records on request.]4. School Policies and Information Annual Notification of Rights under FERPA for Ashland Public Schools

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age ("eligible students") cer-tain rights with respect to the student's education records. These rights are: 1. The right to inspect and review the student's education re cords within 45 days of the day the School receives a request for access.

Parents or eligible students should submit to the School prince pal [or appropriate school offi-cial] a written request that iden- tifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The School official will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. 2. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccu- rate.

Parents or eligible students may ask the School to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate. They should write the School principal [or appropriate school official], clearly iden- tify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate. If the School decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing. 3. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student's education records, ex- cept to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without con-sent.

On the last Friday of each month, unclaimed items are taken to a local charity. Please put your child’s name on items that he or she may forget to bring home (i.e., lunch bag, jackets, vests, musical instruments, sweatshirts, etc.). Pets With prior approval of the principal, a student may bring his or her pet to school when the pet is an integral part of a classroom pres-entation.

Breakfast/Lunch Students may bring their lunch to school or purchase hot lunch for $2.50 (breakfast, $1.50). Meals may be purchased on account before school and at meal times. Students who forget their money may charge up to $5.50 in meals. Students may not purchase meals for other students. Students may not buy separate dessert items if they owe money on their account. Students may not eat in halls. Students may

have only bottled water (i.e., no soft drinks, juice, etc.) in class-rooms. Gum is not allowed at school. Closed Campus Ashland Middle School is a closed campus, which means that stu-dents are not to leave the school grounds between arrival at school and the end of the day, including lunch periods. All students are to remain on campus between the time of delivery in the morning and pickup in the afternoon. Once off school property, including bus stops, the school is not responsible for students’ safety and behavior. High school students are not allowed on campus.

Visitors Parents, volunteers, and community members must check-in at the office before visiting classrooms or staff mem-bers. Student visitors are not allowed at school without the approval of the school principal. Requests must be made one week in advance. Student visitors must be between 11 and 14 years old and live at least 150 miles from Ashland. Interscholastic Program Ashland Middle School offers a 6th, 7th and 8th grade “no cut” interscholastic program where students play teams from other schools. Students are encouraged to participate. Library Our library is a place where students are welcome from 7:45 am to 4:00 p.m. every school day. The library’s mission is to ensure that students and staff are effective lifelong seekers and sharers of in-formation and ideas. The library provides books for leisure reading and research along with a variety of other resources. Computers are available to stu-dents who wish to use educational or word processing programs. Students are allowed to access the Internet for research purposes

School Policies and Information Student Management Program Student behavior is a choice. Students may choose behavior that helps them at school and earns recognition. Responsi-ble choices promote learning and getting along with others. Most students make excellent choices and demonstrate model behaviors, but occasionally a student may choose a be-havior that interferes with teaching and learning. In order for students to learn to assume responsibility for their behavior, it is important for them to know and un-derstand the consequences for their be-

havior. If a student makes an inappropriate choice, then he/she must be willing to accept the consequences. The following are disciplinary actions: Disciplinary Actions 1. Informal Talk : A teacher will talk to the student regarding the student’s inappropriate behavior, asking the student to make a commitment to change his/her behavior. 2. Classroom Consequences : In most cases, teachers will assign classroom consequences (which may include detention supervised by the teacher or a problem statement filled out by the student or both). Parents will be notified. 3. Team Conference with Student : The teacher team and the stu- dent will develop a behavior contract. A counselor may at tend. Parents will be notified.
