roam:A handheld device which works like a gps unit, built with augmented reality to put a new spin on the outdoor adventure. Capture all your excitement with the audio recorder and camera.

Problem:Today’s youth stays cooped up indoors, glued to items such as video games, computers and their cell phones. Thus not being physically active with others their own age. This hinders skill development such as being social with others, which can lead to problems interacting with others later in life. There are no new exciting alternatives for outdoor activities.

This problem is encountered in everyday life when someone decides to overuse TV or video games instead of going outside to play. This also occurs when a child primarily does not talk to others in person.

Significance:

This is our youth’s health at risk. Developing bad habits while young can lead to even more health risks in the future. Roam will help kids face these problems in a fun and exciting way, all while preventing issues like social awkwardness and rising teen and child obesity rates.

100 people total responded to the survey.

Survey:

Kid’s favorite activities:TV, reading,video games,Playing with toys,biking, and computer games.

Outdoor activities:Sports, biking, hiking,swimming.

Adults favorite activity as a kid:Biking, swimming, reading, building forts, sports.

Most of the surveyors believed that being over protective as a parent can hinder the child’s play or Imagination.

Most parents believe Technology has helped Safety but hindered social interaction, and that face to face interaction is Disappearing.

Kids have56 cell phones, 84% video games, 63% personal computers. Most Regulated time with these items until the kids were older teenagers.

Almost all said their kids or others, overuse the items above.

100% believe physical activity is Important. 11% believe kids get enough.

100% said being a good role model is important, most said they try to live the life they advocate but often slip.

Outdoor activities: biking,skateboarding,hiking,kayaking, walking, frisbee, snowboarding, exploring.

37% said they do not get enough physical activity on a weekly basis.

Most of the people who attended summer camps were for sports.

98% have cell phones, 47% have video games, 94% had personal computers.

The younger survey takers responded that their use with these items are monitored.

Use for these items for:Staying connected, entertainment, games, networking,school.

65% of American homes play computer or video games.

63% of parents believe games are a positive part of their Children’s lives.

Video game players- 40%-female, 60%-male.

Computer games44%-female,56%-male.

In the past 20 yrs the rates of being Overweight doubled in kids and Tripled in teenagers.

15 % American kids are overweightthat’s 9 million kids.

1 in 7 kids is at increased risk of weight related chronic diseases.

1/3 of kids born in 2000 will develop type 2 Diabetes, due to, unhealthy eating and physical inactivity.

Walking 30 mins 5 days a week is a simple change with a big impact.

Parents need to start teaching children to enjoy healthier foods.

Eat healthy portions.

Be active for 60 mins a day.

Reduce sugar and fat intake.

Social Phobia is defined as a persistent fear of social performance situations where embarrassment is a possibility.

Concerns: embarrassment, being judged, anxious, weak, crazy, or stupid.

Signs: blushing, sweating, increased heart rates,trembling.

Usually begins in adolescence.

Average age is about 12 yrs old.

More females then males have social phobias.

Augmented Reality is the blend of the virtual world and the physical,bringing things you would see in a video game into real life.

Most people are familiar with the digital yellow line in foot ball to show the first down line. This is Augmented reality in its most commercial state.

for a sponsored project.

project:Develop a toy which revolves around a ball which is 2 inches in diameter. Make sure

that the toy meets safety measures for the age group such as chocking hazards. The toy should be able to be put into a $19.99 and under price point.

Finish with a high level of presentation.

Buy the new pouches of soap and insert them into the main body. Replace the stopper cap and suds buds are now ready for use. Squeeze the body to have soap come out of the sponge and wash.

problem:Snowboarding goggles tend to be big and bulky. This is a good thing to block the face from

wind burn. But having the lens so far away can cause some depth perception problems while riding.

idea:Create a pair of goggles that are stylish but do not stick off the riders head as far. Giving the rider the best of both worlds, less depth perception problems but still
