Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.

ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Writing a Winning

Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve

held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include

information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by

attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe

you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance

options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can

provide proof if asked.

More and more people are talking about theimportance of personal branding, both in careersearching and in career development. Effectivepersonal branding not only makes you stand outfrom the crowd to employers and recruiters, it canalso increase your job security by communicatingyour value as a leader and team player to yourorganization.

What is personal branding?

Personal branding is the process of identifying theunique and differentiating value that you bring toan organization, team and/or project andcommunicating it in a professionally memorableand consistent manner in all of your actions, bothonline and offline, to all current and prospectivestakeholders in your career.

The Lighthouse Personal Branding Model

The lighthouse is a great model for breakingdown the branding process into four key steps: thefoundation, the beacon, the tower and the beam.

Foundation:

Your foundation is your unarguable strengths andexperience in your chosen area. To identify yourown foundation, write down the strengths thatdifferentiate you from the rest and ask yourfriends, family and colleagues/managers to dothe same for you. Identify the top three to fiveoverlapping strengths that support the careerdirection you want to pursue.

Beacon:

Your beacon is the memorable and consistentcommunication of your strengths and experience. Now that you have identified your foundation, it'stime to create your beacon by finding a word orphrase that represents these strengths and canbecome your brand. Develop a short pitch thatcan follow your brand, describing your strengthsin more detail. Ensure that your word or phrase isversatile and can change with your direction.

Tower:Simply put, your tower is your visibility, reach andpresentation, both online and offline, whichsupport the beacon. This is really everything youdo to proactively build your personal brand. Thehigher you build your tower with your efforts, themore visible you will be to potential careerstakeholders. Here are some ways to proactivelybuild your brand and credibility in front of yourtarget audience:

Create a LinkedIn profile and follow thesuggested steps to complete your profile 100percent, making sure you include your personalbrand and pitch in your subtitle and summarysections.

Create a Google account and profile forimproved search engine optimization.

Include your personal brand on your resume, cover letter, business cards, email signature, voicemail message and across your other socialnetworks, such as Twitter and Facebook.

Consider creating a personal website/blog sitewhere you can house all of your information, including experience, education, skills, honors, entrepreneurial efforts and more.

Start your own blog with a unique point of >>>view on your industry/area of interest.

Personal Application

I used this model to help developmy own personal brand during myMBA career search. Havingidentified my foundation to be myendless energy, out-of-the-boxcreativity, relationship building andproblem solving, I looked for aword that could pull all of thosestrengths together into onememorable brand message. Thebeacon I chose was "generator" asI generate energy, creativity, relationships and solutions toproblems. I was pursuing a career

in marketing and brandmanagement, and therefore, Ibecame a brand and marketinggenerator. I proactively built mytower by incorporating my branddirectly into my online profiles, myresumes and my entrepreneurialefforts. I then took a more activeapproach, targeting the "beam" byincorporating my personal brandin my interview responses, networking introductions andinformational interview outreach. Itwas this process that helped mesuccessfully secure my currentemployment, and this modelcontinues to help guide all of myprofessional and entrepreneurialventures.

As you create, build and improveon your personal brand, keep thelighthouse in mind as a visualmodel and guide to personalbranding success.
