My Viewpoint
Some say we are meagerly paid, That we labor by method and rule, And with humorous, grimacing faces, They exclaim, "Still teaching school!" Like red rag in a Spanish arena, Are their wrinkling, rubicund noses, And the pity they wish to express, Only their ignorance exposes! Why, a doctor gives pills till he dies! At the bench a lawyer grows gray! The farmer farms in his doting age! Old merchants their bargains display! So why all the pitying gush, The wise cracks and gibes, I beseech, If a pedagogue's soul's in his work, Why shouldn't a teacher teach? God pity intelligents' lack, That successes with shekels would measure, God pity the lesser man, That would fawn after Midas' treasure! To butter our bread and pay taxes, We certainly welcome our dole, But a bairn's love and a bairn's trust, Ah, that is the food for the soul! The glory in childish eyes, Their faith and affection, God given, That is our coinage divine, "For of such is the Kingdom of Heaven!" Let them scoff at our job if they will, The snob, the churl, the fool, The M aster of Man was a teacher too! Thank God that we do teach school !
