del verbo "there is/are".
Students
To start off
This educational resource contains four activities:
Activity 1: first, you will write a description about a friend. Then, you will
work in pairs.
Activity 2: in this activity, working in pairs again, you will practise the use
of the expressions “there is” and “there are”. You will use them to orally
describe the objects in your classroom. Then, in groups, you will create a
poster to revise the vocabulary about school materials.
Activity 3: the whole group will solve an enigma posted in the classroom
blog. You will also learn how to create a timetable.
Final activity: finally, working in groups, you will describe a friend, your
classroom and your timetable.
In this educational resource, you will carry out different types of activities: you will
work independently and also with classmates, think for yourself, go one step
further when to get more information on the topic studied, and finally, assess
yourself.
These are some of the skills you will practise with these activities:
You will learn how to work in groups and how to present your ideas;
specifically, you will learn to:
present concepts and ideas clearly.
analyse and evaluate other people's points of view.
develop attitudes that foster reflection and dialogue.
You will learn how to use your computer and the Internet to study:
Picture. Skills. Source: Mediateca.
using search engines and official websites with useful information.
using desktop applications to edit images or to create text
documents, audio material and presentations.
and you will also learn to make sense of informative texts.
You will learn and use vocabulary related to school:
using the correct words and expressions to describe school
materials and subjects.
and you will then be able to understand a dialogue and to write
texts in which people describe a classroom and talk about
timetables.
You will learn when and how to use time expressions containing the
prepositions “in” and “at”.
You will learn to use the expressions “there is/are” properly.
Are you ready? Let’s go!
Introduction
Illustration. Introduction.
Help Luisa and Miguel in their first day at high school by doing the following
activities:
Activity 1. First day of school.
Activity 2. At school.
Activity 3. Timetables.
Final activity. This is me.
Activity 1: First day of school
It's your turn
What’s in a name?
Click on the following link:
I spy.
Illustration. Question. Source: Intef.
Do all the activities that you find in the sections “My name is Looney”, “I spy with
my little eye” and “Martin, my friend”. You will learn a lot about descriptions. Take
screenshots of each activity that you do (you may use GIMP), paste them into a
text document and then, send it to your teacher by email or webmail.
Then, you will write a description about either a real or a fictional friend using
Writer. Use the knowledge and the examples that you studied when you visited the
link above. Remember to include the following information in your description:
name, age, nationality, hobbies, preferences, etc.
Once you have finished, send the text document to your teacher by email or
webmail.
Let's practise together
Find someone who…
In this activity you will work in pairs. Are you ready?
Your teacher will provide you with this document:
Find someone who.
First, read the whole document; then, find a classmate to work with.
Illustration. Question.
You will both ask each other the questions that appear in the document. Do not
forget to take notes about your classmate’s answers because you will need the
information later.
Once you have finished, describe your classmate, according to his/her answers, in a
Writer text document. For example, “Joseph likes pasta. He loves playing the guitar
but he hates science-fiction films”.
Finally, share your text document with your teacher using Google Docs so that he
can assess your homework.
Activity 2: At school
Let's practise together
A dictionary about school
In this activity, you will work in pairs again. Click on the following link:
My New School.
Illustration. Chair. Source: Intef.
Do all the activities that you find in this digital educational resource. You will learn a
lot of vocabulary about school. Take screenshots of each activity that you do (you
may use GIMP), paste them into an Impress presentation. Upload the presentation
to AuthorStream. and share it with your teacher.
Now, working in pairs, you will practise with the expressions “there is” and “there
are” and the vocabulary about school materials that you studied in the resource
above.
Make up either a true or a false sentence about the school materials that you can
find in your classroom, using “there is” or “there are”. Your classmate must say if it
is true or false. If it is false, your classmate must create a correct sentence. For
example:
A: There are two pencils in the class.
B: False. There are twenty pencils in the class
Once you have finished, you both must write, at least, 5 sentences and their
correct responses. Use Google Docs to create the text document and share it with
your teacher.
Let's practise together
Is it true or false?
In groups of three, you will create a glog (poster) using Glogster EDU. The glog
must include a picture about a classroom (a laboratory, a gym…) where you can
find some school materials that you studied in the resource "My New School":
My New School.
You can download the pictures from any of the following links:
Banco de imágenes y sonidos.
Banco de imágenes Pics4 Learning.
Mediateca.
Once you have finished the glog (poster), post it in the classroom Blog.
Your teacher will show all the posters on the interactive whiteboard. Use them as a
resource to help you do the following activity.
In turns, each group will orally make three statements using the information in the
posters displayed on the interactive whiteboard. Only one of the statements must
be true; the others must be false. For example:
There are two tables in the laboratory. (False)
There are two blackboards in the gym. (True)
There are two chairs in the classroom. (False)
The other groups must guess the correct statement. Pay attention to the
information because you will only hear it once.
Activity 3: Timetables
Illustration. Timetables.
It's your turn
Maths or English?
Now, you will work individually. Click on this link:
It's a sign!
Illustration. Classroom. Source: Pics4learning.
Do only the activities "Aries" and "Taurus" in order to revise the vocabulary that
you learnt in the previous activity. Take screenshots of each activity that you do
(you may use GIMP), paste them into a text document and then, send it to your
teacher by email or webmail.
Then, visit the entry "Give me a clue" that you can find in the classroom Blog. This
entry contains an enigma that the whole class must solve. Discuss the solution with
your classmates by posting comments in the Blog entry. At the end of the day, you
should have come up with a solution. The enigma is related to the vocabulary that
you studied when you visited the link “It’s a sign!”: subjects and timetables.
Remember that you must use the English language in your comments and that you
only have 24 hours to solve the enigma!
Once your time is up, your teacher will post the correct answer in the classroom
Blog.
Let's practise together
My timetable
In this activity you will work in pairs.
First, you will create a timetable in a text document using Google Docs. The
timetable must contain the subjects that you study at high school and also several
activities that you can practise in the afternoon. It may be fictitious!
Then, you must write, at least, 6 sentences using the information provided in the
timetable. Do not forget to use time expressions containing the prepositions “in”
and “at”.
Once you have finished your work, share your text document with your teacher
using Google Docs.
Self-evaluation
Now, you will check what you have learnt throughout the different activities that
you have done in this unit.
Final activity
Task
This is me
Individually, visit the following link:
Test two.
Illustration. School materials. Source: Intef.
Do all the activities you find in the digital test, in order to assess the knowledge
that you have gained throughout the various educational resources that you have
studied previously. Take screenshots of each activity that you do (you may use
GIMP), paste them into a text document and then, send it to your teacher by email
or webmail.
Then, in groups of four, you will create a presentation using Photo Peach.
The presentation will contain four slides with the following information:
A plan of the high school showing the location of the different rooms:
classrooms, library, gym…
An image of a classroom containing school materials: desks, blackboard,
pencils, chairs….
A timetable
A description about your best friend in the high school.
You can download the images from the following links:
Banco de imágenes y sonidos.
Banco de imágenes Pics4 Learning.
Mediateca.
Finally, your group will orally present your work to your teacher and your
classmates using the interactive whiteboard. Remember to use the vocabulary and
the structures that you have learnt throughout the previous activities: you may use
“there is/are” to talk about the school materials that you find in the classroom and
use the prepositions “in” and “at” to explain your timetable.
Your teacher will publish your presentation in a new entry of the classroom Blog.
