The Latest Addition at La Finca In October and November, 2009, thanks to generous donations from Stan Smith Events from Atlanta, Georgia and Immanuel Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, a soccer field was built on our land (La Finca). On December 5, the president of Stan Smith Events, Gary Neibur, came to El Salva-dor to dedicate the field. The project had been kept a secret from the children, so they were surprised and thrilled to see this beautiful field and couldn’t wait to play their favorite game. In addition to the field, soccer balls, shoes, and jerseys were donated from the Adidas

Company.

My Father’s House International– Annual Report

God Answers Prayers by: Kathryn Winn, Director of Family Programs

March 1, 2010, was one of the most joyful, emotional, and downright amazing days of my 6 years in El Salvador. Daniela, 13 years old, was abandoned when she was about 3. She was left with no birth certificate, no names of par-ents, siblings, or other relatives, no record of hospital or general area where she was born…nothing. All we had was her first name. Daniela’s nightly prayer was, “God, please let someone adopt me, or let me find my family.” La Casa de Mi Padre is the only children’s home in El Salvador that works intensively with the bio-logical family members of its chil-dren, constantly working toward complete family restoration in the Lord. We had been able to make contact with the families of all of the

kids, except for Daniela. After more than three years of dead-end searches, I shared my frustrations with the staff. My boss, Gary, en-couraged us to intentionally pray for Daniela as a team. Within two weeks, I be-gan receiving leads from places and people that are too crazy to detail in this letter. Within a month, Patty, our psychologist, and I were able to find Daniela’s great grand-parents, a discovery which quickly led us to a large biological family that had been searching and asking for Daniella for many years. On March 1st, we were able to intro-duce Daniela to her family. The picture below of Daniela and her sister somewhat describes the emo-tions of the day. Quotes of the day by Daniela: “God listens to me.”

“ Now I can say that I have a fam-ily.” “I don’t need to forgive my mom now because I already forgave her a long time ago. She doesn’t know that giving me to La Casa de Mi Padre was a good thing.” “If I saw my mom right now, I would give her a hug.” I am confident that all of this was planned by God. He simply said, “NOW.” Please continue to pray for Daniela’s family as they begin the restoration process.

My Journey with God By: Gary Powell

2009 began with my father having just passed away and the news that my job at the Hilton Hotel would be ending in February. It was as if the Lord pulled me aside to take a walk with Him; however He wasn’t talking, just walking. My inquisitiveness as to where we were going, how much longer, and how we would be sustained was my constant petition. The Lord was silent, and the more I struggled to hear Him, the less I heard. I was telling Him my plan and not listen-ing for His. It was a wrestling between following my will and submit-ting to His authority. I would no longer be leading, but rather taking direction. The transition from working for a company to that of a minis-try was a real lesson of growing in faith. I had always trusted in a busi-ness for a paycheck, not depending upon others to be God’s hands of provision. This was and still is humbling. I experienced a certain in-

dependence when I worked at the hotel, verses an interdependence that ministry brings about. Now I had to “open up” before others to share my financial situation. It was easy to ask for help for the chil-dren of La Casa de mi Padre but another thing to have to ask for sup-port for my family. This transition also meant that we had to reduce our expenses. We had to let go of material things, to live a simpler life. As we moved into a smaller home, the space forced us to give away furniture, equipment, toys, books, etc. From that experience I learned that material things are not what give us joy; rather it is the relationships/friendships that are the most important things that we possess. Without them, we are truly destitute and poor. Now I under-stand that we must let go of that which distracts us, our independence, and reach out to the only One that gives life meaning. Our identity is found in Him, not in positions, titles, or possessions. When Jesus sent out the twelve it was with the following instructions. Mt. 10:9-10 “Do not take along any gold or silver or

copper in your belts; take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or

sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.” And so in the coming year, I know that God is telling me that I must depend on Him and the help that He sends through others and not try to do everything myself.

My name is Becky Hjemvick, and my hus-band's name is Jake Hjemvick. We live in Pitts-burgh, Pa, and ran the Pittsburgh marathon for the first time on May 3, 2009. It was great! We decided in January we really were going to do this. That same month, my husband Jake attended a men's breakfast at his parents’ church, where the speaker spoke about how he really wanted to participate in the Iron Man Triathalon to prove to himself that he could do it, but he also wanted to use it as an op-portunity to raise money for a good cause. So, my husband came home and suggested that we use this marathon to raise money for a good cause also. We had both recently been to El Salva-dor on missions trips with our church. We visited La Casa de mi Padre while we were there. We spent time hanging out with the kids and also did work at the orphanage. We both really felt that what was being done for the children at the orphanage was life changing for them. We decided we would

send emails and letters to our friends and family telling them about the orphanage and asking them to sponsor us to help raise money for La Casa de

mi Padre. It was easy for us; all we had to do after that was pray that the letters we sent would have enough of an impact on our friends and family to lead them to want to give to the orphanage...and run. We are so thankful for everyone who donated and hope that even the little amount that we raised can help!
