A LIFE WORTHLIVING

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ

T he Catholic funeral itself is primarily an extended prayer for the person who has died. Certainly, it celebrates his or

her life; and we pray for those who mourn. But the heart of our funeral liturgy is our fervent hope that the one who has died may be purified with the help of our prayers and hasten to see the face of God.

in Christ” (CCC 1021). Pope St John Paul II ob-served at the beginning of this Millennium that the “people of our time have become insensitive to the Last Things” (Crossing the Threshold of Hope). Awareness of those Last Things has in the past stirred consciences and brought many to repent-ance and to the confes-sion of their sins. As that wise book The Imitation of Christ notes: “If you aren’t fit to face death today it’s very unlikely you will be tomorrow…” (Book 1:23). For “remem-bering our mortality,” the Catechism tells us, “helps us realise that we have only a limited time in which to bring our lives to fulfilment” (CCC 1007). Being aware of this lim-ited time on earth and all that is to follow – our judgement, our purgatory, heaven or hell forever – becomes an urgent invita-tion to conversion in our lives.

We pray also at cem-eteries. From 1st Novem-ber to the 8th each year, the Church enriches our prayer for the souls in pur-gatory by granting them a plenary indulgence each time we devoutly visit any cemetery and pray.

In a very special way, we pray on All Souls Day for the dead, especially members of our family and friends.

All of these practices are part and parcel of be-ing Catholic. Far more than mere customs, they are expressions of our faith. The realisation of what the Psalmist calls “the shortness of our lives” which helps shape our priorities and gives each day a new urgency in the light of all eternity before us.

Today we can too easily lose sight of this perspec-tive of eternity, failing to see what we have time for. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church ex-presses so clearly: “Death puts an end to human life as the time open either to accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested

Wyraz Bożego Miłosierdzia – OdpustyU zyskiwanie odpustów

przez wiernych w Kościele Ka-

tolickim ma wielowiekową już traadycję. Odpust jest to darowanie przed Bogiem kary doczesnej za grzechy, zgładzone już co do winy. Ktoś rozumie tę definicję? To spowiedź nie załatwia wszyst-kiego? Co załatwia spowiedź? Odpuszczenie grzechów, czyli znika ze mnie grzech. A co zos-taje? Kara, czyli to co grzech w tobie zrobił. To słowo kara nie jest najszczęśliwsze: zamiast kary jest używane słowo kon-sekwencja – grzech ma swoje konsekwencje, po grzechu nie jesteś taki sam jak byłeś wcześniej. W spowiedzi ten grzech jest ci odpuszczony, ale to co ten grzech zrobił w tobie, to spustoszenie – to w tobie pozostaje. Papież Franciszek używa słowa ‘rana’. Co z tym zrobisz? Jestem rozgrzeszony, ale jestem grzesznikiem – kon-sekwencje moich grzechów we mnie siedzą. I to jest mie-jsce w które wkracza odpust: Kościół mówi: ‘nie zostawia-my cię samego z tymi twoimi ranami, z konsekwencjami, które w tobie zostały po two-im grzechu’. Odpust to jest łaska darowania tego właśnie! Papież mówi: „dziecko, rusz

się te kilka kilometrów i kor-zystaj z tego, że Kościół chce ci pomóc w walce z konsek-wencjami własnych grzechów. Warto, czy nie warto?” Nauka Kościoła nt. odpustów mówi nam również o tym, że odpust każdy wierny może uzyskać dla siebie lub ofiarować od-pusty za zmarłych. Miesiąc listopad, zwłaszcza pierwsze dni stanowią okazję do uzys-kania odpustu zupełnego i ofiarowania go za zmarłych. Kto uzyska odpust zupełny za zmarłych – ratuje dusze z czyśćca! Oto okoliczności umożliwiające uzyskanie od-pustu w najbliższych dniach: 1. Wierni, którzy nawiedzą kościół lub kaplicę 1 listopada od południa i przez cały Dzień Zaduszny, mogą dostąpić od-pustu zupełnego za zmarłych. Można go uzyskać tylko jeden raz w ciągu dnia. 2. Wierni, którzy nawiedzą cmentarz i pomodlą się mogą uzyskać od-pust za zmarłych. Odpust jest zupełny od 1 do 8 listopada, natomiast w inne dni roku jest czastkowy. Teraz jakie są warunki uzyskania odpustu zupełnego lub cząstkowego? 1. Wykonanie powyższych czynności obdarzonych od-pustem. 2. Wykluczenie wsze-lkiego przywiązania do jak-

iegokolwiek grzechu, nawet powszedniego (jeżeli jest brak pełnej dyspozycji wykluc-zenia upodobania do jakie-gokolwiek grzechu, odpust będzie tylko cząstkowy). 3. Spełnienie trzech warunków: odbycie spowiedzi sakramen-talnej lub bycie w stanie łaski uświęcającej, przyjęcie Komu-nii Świętej, odmówienie Ojcze nasz… Wierzę… i modlitwy dowolnej w intencjacj Ojca Świętego. Po jednej spowiedzi sakramentalnej można uzyskać wiele odpustów zupełnych, a po jednej Komunii św. i jed-nej modlitwie można uzyskać tylko jeden odpust zupełny. W listopadowy czas szczególnie pamiętamy o tych, co odeszli. Odwiedzamy cmentarze, za-palmy znicze, kładziemy na mogiłach kwiaty, zaznaczając w ten sposób, jak bliscy są naszemu sercu. Czujemy ich obecność, choć fizycznie ich nie ma. Nie ma w tym nic dziwnego, przecież wier-zymy w świętych obcowanie. Pamiętajmy również o tym, że możemy im pomóc, naszą modlitwą, ofiarowanym za nich odpustem. Oni potrzebują od nas tylko tyle i aż tyle…

Bal „Wszystkich Świętych”

31 października w środę od godziny 6pm – 8pm zapraszamy do holu parafialnego wszyst-kie dzieci na nasz dor-oczny bal „Wszystkich Świętych”, organizow-any przez wspólnotę Domowego Kościoła, Harcerzy i Chór Dziecięcy. Prosimy by każde dziecko przebrało się bądź to za swojego świętego imiennika, bądź za swojego ulubio-nego świętego. W pro-gramie balu są przewid-ziane zabawy dla dzieci, oraz słodki poczęstunek. Symboliczne 2 funty będą opłatą za wstęp. Zapraszamy ponownie wszystkie dzieci, a rod-ziców prosimy o pomoc w przygotowaniu stro-jów. I znów się będzie działo!!! Zapraszamy!!!

Liturgia dziecięcaW każdą pierwszą

niedzielę miesiąca jest liturgia Mszy św. dla dzie-ci. Najbliższa Msza św. dla dzieci będzie 4 listo-pada 2018 r. o godz. 4pm. Serdecznie zapraszamy wszystkie dzieci!

Dzień Zaduszny następuje zaraz po Dniu Wszystkich Świętych. Jest to dzień, który w sposób szczególny czci i wspomina dusze zmarłych. Katolicy wierzą, że nie wszy-scy zmarli od razu idą do nieba, ale muszą odpokutować swoje grzechy w czyśćcu. Ka-tolicka wiara przyjmuje, że czyściec oczyści dusze z wszystkich grzechów, z których nie zdążyli się wyspowiadać i odpokutować na ziemi. Modlitwa i Msze św. za zmarłych mają im w tym pomóc. Święty Augustyn, oraz wielu innych dla zrozumienia istoty czyśćca porównywało go do ognia. Tak jak ogień wypala wszystko tak czyściec wypala grzechy człowieka, aby mógł wejść do nieba będąc bez skazy. Kościół

pamięta o zmarłych przez cały rok liturgiczny. Jed-nak Dzień Zaduszny jest bardzo szczególny. Można uzyskać w nim odpust zupełny za dusze zmarłych. Dlatego warto w tym czasie przystąpić do spowiedzi. Udajmy się więc na Mszę i na cmentarz. Pamiętajmy o naszych zmarłych i tych spoczywających w Perth i tych w naszej Ojczyźnie i pomóżmy im dostać się do nieba. Kiedyś ktoś pomoże nam. Msza św. w Dzień Zaduszny (piątek) po polsku również o godz. 5pm, a od godz. 4pm okazja do spow-iedzi.

Nasz katechizm katolicki wyliczając „Uczynki miłosierne co do duszy” jako ostatni uczynek miłosierdzia wylicza: „Modlić się za żywych i zmarłych”. Tak więc modlitwa za zmarłych to nasz ludzki obowiązek, to nasze chrześcijańskie zadanie. Miesiąc listopad jest tym miesiącem kiedy to oddajemy cześć naszym drogim zmarłym, kiedy przywołujemy ich w naszej pamięci i ciągle chcemy z serca im podziękować za to wszystko co dla nas uczynili będąc częścią naszego ziemskiego życia. Są to często nasi rodzice, rodzeństwo, nasi kochani dziadkowie, czy sąsiedzi, przyjaciele, a może nasi pełni poświęcenia nauczy-ciele czy księża z rodzin-nej parafii. Nawet trudno ich wszystkich wyliczyć. My ciągle jeszcze mamy

wobec nich tak wielki dług wdzięczności za wszystko co dzisiaj dzięki nim po-siadamy, jakimi jesteśmy ludźmi. Niech ten zbliżający się miesiąc listopad będzie naszym czasem, aby im za to wszystko podziękować. Tego długu często nawet nie potrafimy spłacić w całości, bo nasze życie jest za krótk-ie. Dlatego najpiękniejszym darem wdzięczności dla nich wszystkich będzie nasza modlitwa i ofiara Mszy św., która jest takim bukietem duchowych róż. Nie mamy innej możliwości jak tylko poprzez ten duchowy dar pomóc im w osiągnieciu nieba i bycia z Bogiem w wieczności. Nasza parafia jak co roku będzie ofiarować przez cały miesiąc listopad 30 Mszy św. za zmarłych poleconych w waszych „wypominkach”. Prosimy o zabranie ze sobą kart „wy-

pominkowych”, wypisanie na nich imion i nazwisk Waszych drogich zmarłych, włożenie tych kart do kop-erty, oraz zwrócenie ich do jednego z księży przed 2 listopada. Karty na „wy-pominki” znajdują się w przedsionku kościoła. Wiec-zny odpoczynek racz im dać Panie!

Nabożeństwo modlitewne na cmentarzu

Jak co roku zapraszamy do udziału w nabożeństwie modlitewnym przy gro-bach polskich żołnierzy poległych w czasie II wojny światowej. Nabożeństwo odbędzie się na cmentarzu w Perth w niedzielę 4 lis-topada o godz. 3pm. Po ceremonii na cmentarzu udamy się bezpośrednio do kościoła św. Jana Chr-zciciela, gdzie o godz. 4pm będzie odprawiona Msza św. w intencji Polskich żołnierzy spoczywających na naszym cmentarzu. Ser-decznie zapraszamy!

Master of Ceremonies A Master of Ceremonies in the Catholic

Church was originally “an official of the Papal Court responsible for the proper and smooth conduct of the elegant and elaborate rituals in-volving the Pope and the sacred liturgy.”

The primary role of the Master of Ceremonies (MC) is to assist in organizing the Mass and di-recting all liturgical movement so it flows with the proper decorum. This is a vibrant, exciting and rewarding ministry. MC’s are required to have or-ganizational skills, be able to give and take direc-tions and work well with children (Altar Servers). For more information or to volunteer for this rôle please contact Canon Mulholland.

ReadersOur Readers play a

huge role. They come from all walks of life, representing the diversity of our parish. New read-ers are always welcome and we are currently looking for people who are able to read especial-ly at the Vigil Mass and Sunday Evening Mass.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass

We do not have a suf-ficient number of Ex-traordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. The Precious Blood will be offered at all Masses and we are looking to recruit more help.

Please consider our pleas for help and talk to Canon Mulholland or Mary Lou Fisher.

Would existing Ex-traordinary Ministers of Holy Communion please volunteer for the gaps in the existing rota which can be amended at the back of the Church.

All Souls - IndulgencesAn indulgence, applicable only to the souls

in purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who de-voutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from the first to the eighth of November; on other days of the year it is partial.

A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who on the day dedicated to the Commemo-ration of All the Faithful Departed [November 2 {as well as on the Sunday preceding or fol-lowing, and on All Saints’ Day}] piously visit a church. In visiting the church, it is required that one Our Father and the Creed be recited. To acquire a plenary indulgence, it is necessary also to fulfil the following three conditions: sacramental Confession, Eucharistic commun-ion, and prayer for the intention of the Holy Father.

The three conditions may be fulfilled sev-eral days before or after the performance of the visit; it is, however, fitting that communion be received and the prayer for the intention of the Holy Father be said on the same day as the visit. The condition of praying for the intention of the Holy Father is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary. A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once in the course of the day.

Faith Sharing Groups

Our Advent Faith Sharing Group material is organised into three sessions. The first session will be during the Week beginning 25th Novem-ber - and then runs for the following two weeks, ending during the week beginning 10th Decem-ber.

Would leaders please organise their own ses-sions as usual and send Deacon Len a note of your dates, times, and numbers able to attend.

Materials will be avail-able for group leaders shortly and at that time Deacon Len will be in touch with you.

All are more than welcome to join a House Group. If you would lke to join please speak to Deacon Len and he can help you find a group near to home - and at a time that suits you best.

back to a life now past rather than looking for-wards to the “resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come”.

The faith which allowed St Therese of Lisieux to say on her death-bed, “I am not dying; I am enter-ing into life” (Last Con-versations). The Church always prays as she be-lieves and so it is not be-cause we disapprove of the lyrics of Frank Sinatra or the chants of the foot-ball terraces that we insist that secular songs find no place in the prayer of the Christian Funeral. It is that the Church prays only as she believes. We treasure the memories of our loved ones but we also

know where their hope and our own is placed. “Christ Himself … died for our sins,” St Peter tells us, “died for the guilty, to lead us to God” (I Pe-ter 3:18). It is our faith which makes us realise that the faithful departed do not need our praises but they very much need our prayers.

As the Catechism ex-plains, each one of us at the moment of death, will, in our immortal souls, come to a “par-ticular judgement” lead-ing “to the blessedness of heaven” either “through a purification,” that is pur-gatory, “or immediately.” There is also a terrible re-ality of which the Gospel

repeatedly speaks: “im-mediate and everlasting damnation” (CCC 1022). For “to die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merci-ful love,” the Catechism explains, “means remain-ing separated from him for ever by our own free choice” (CCC 1033). Yes, this is the real and ever-lasting choice of our lives.

Purgatory is a consoling hope for us. As the Cate-chism explains: “all who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imper-fectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven” (CCC 1030).

This is why we pray at every Christian Funeral, indeed, in every Mass, that all the faithful departed may rest in peace. It is the prayer that, we hope, one day will be made for you and for me. As that great mother, St Monica, would finally ask of her sons: “lay this body wherever it may be … this only I ask of you that you should remember me at the Altar of the Lord wherever you may be” (Confessions Bk.9:11). As the month of November begins with a reminder of our mor-tality let us be mindful of that urgent call which comes to us today: “The time has come,” Our Lord announces, “The King-dom of God is close at hand. Repent and believe the Good News” (Mark 1:15). In the “Hail Mary” this becomes an intention so beautifully brought to-gether when we ask Our Lady to pray for us at the only two moments which ever matter: “Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”
