EditorialDear Friends

It gives me immense pleasure to be back here, as the Editor of Print Miracle magazine. Though I have been on the Editor’s chair before, it is a feeling of

honour that I have been again entrusted with the job of bringing out the magazine that represents all the printers of the state. My predecessor P.S.Rajan has done a wonderful job and living up to his legacy is indeed a challenge. I shall try my level best in bringing out the best that Print Miracle magazine is capable of. And in also building up a team which will deliver good content for the magazine.

In this issue, Immediate Past President G. Venugopal shares with you his experiences and what he learnt in his eventful tenure as KMPA President. I hope all of you enjoy reading about his experiences as much as I did. He and his team have done a brilliant job in implementing the various projects and activities and I believe the succeeding team has really big shoes to fill.

A new team of office-bearers have just taken charge of the association. They bring in a lot of zeal and passion to the table and I wish them all the very best in discharging their duties. I believe they will be able to effectively take on from where the previous team left off; and continue with the good work.

We have this time a very interesting introduction to one of our new dynamic members -- Roy Thomas of Orange Offset. Hope his story proves to be an inspiration for other young print entrepreneurs who are fighting in the battlefield of Print in Kerala. Succeeding in such businesses in Kerala is not less than succeeding in battle. The risks are almost the same.

And last but not the least, please do write to us dear friends; with your views, suggestions, feedback on what else we can do to make the magazine better.

Thank you very much!!

President’s Desk

Dear friends,

Today, KMPA being a firmly-bound organisation has become an integral part of the print industry in Kerala. As per the current scenario, it is my esteemed privilege to be appointed as the President of such an association holding a great legacy.

However, it involves lot of responsibilities and challenges concurrently. Our former Presidents who lead us gloriously were truly talented, determined and were virtuous organizers too. It is their sweat that has yielded this association the position of being the pioneer. That tremendous journey of development should continue ceaselessly. This is what makes this position inclined to responsibilities and challenges. I am elected as the 6th president of this organisation. It is really a matter of pride for each member that our organisation is purely democratic. It is to be specially mentioned that my nomination as the President was undisputedly monotonous. More than being installed as the president, my name even being proposed to this position as the president of such a prestigious organization makes me happier personally. This achievement has got an added glory, because this is the first time someone outside Kochi is being installed as the President.I come from Chathanoor, a remote village in Kollam district of Kerala which is still at its threshold of development. It is there, I set off my career in print business 30 years ago in a very basic manner. The challenges faced by the print industry in a village which falls back in industrial sector are huge. But with rattling self-confidence, constant hard work and determination, I was able to overcome all of them. This alone is not that lights my way while being obliged to take up the responsibilities of leading KMPA for the upcoming two years, but also the assurance of having the support of my colleagues for all my activities. For the successful execution of our past projects and activities we were able to work as a single team until now. I strongly believe this team spirit is the cogent cause for all our success. We must have huge aims. We should resolve it together and work together to realise it. Victory of our association is the result of our members’ integrity. There must be proper and effective communication among the members. Members should be able to share their ideas and thus work close to the association. All the office bearers including myself are obliged to motivate members to do this.Printing sector influences human life and our socio-cultural ties. Even in this digital era the significance of print media is remarkable. Moreover, day-after-day along with technological growth this sector also makes good changes. So we know the letters we print illuminate minds of millions with wisdom that open new horizons and thereby illuminating the future of print industry. We can take pride in publishing smoothly each edition of our prestigious magazine – Print Miracle. I extend my appreciation to everyone who works behind this with great commitment. Even so we must make necessary changes in the contents of this magazine in order to increase readership. The editor and others who work behind this are truly capable of bringing such modifications. As the President, I declare all the necessary support and aid.I extend my sincere gratitude to all the respected members and dignitaries who have appointed me. I am sure you will put your best and be with me to take our association into new higher levels of development. Thank you everyone.

A small dot can stop a big sentence. A few more dots at the end of the same sentence can add

more connotations. Dots can create and recreate everything in this world. Placing a perfect dot at a perfect place on a consistent basis makes a printer’s life easy.

Folks!, life is nothing but adding and connecting dots.

Amazing truth, yet a universal reality! Every ending in this life could be a new beginning... who else can do this better than a printer!

Print has a solid past; it is so precious today and will continue to enjoy a lead role in future in mobilizing our civilization.

Nobody in this world can think of a day without touching a print whether one happens to be a congenital idiot or a high genius in science, art or literature. One may be a millionaire or a beggar in the street; we are all connected to print by some means.

In the modern world of knowledge society and nanoscience print is completely repurposed to a manufacturing and micro-structuring technology, and it is certain that print will be a part and parcel of all modern innovations.

Colleagues... be proud that you are a printer because... you decide the future of humankind.

Why I am a Proud Printer...A thought by Prof. Dr. Rajendrakumar Anayath, the print Guru of India

Know your member...

ife is all about taking risks. If you never take risks, then you’ll never know what

you’re capable of.”The line above is not a famous quote

by some top business baron or academic or a philosopher, but a simple thought by Roy Thomas, Managing Director of Orange Printers Pvt. Ltd., Trivandrum. There is a reason for him to make such a bold statement – because the birth of Orange Printers is indeed a story of courage, vision and fighting spirit of this man, who along with his partner Sajith B.S. established the press just 8 years back in 2008 and took the venture to a high pedestal of reputation in the industry.

“There are many common aspects between me and Sajith including our whereabouts, values in life, business principles and above all mutual respect we have for each other,” says Roy.

Roy was with Mathrubhoomi printing section, Sajith, a Printing Technology Diploma holder from IPT, Shoranur, was working with a printing establishment in Trivandrum when they met through a mutual friend in 2002. Both were bachelors with burning entrepreneurial ambition.

“We became good friends because we had similar wavelength in thinking. Then we stayed together in a bachelors’ den in the city. There began the dream and discussions of setting up an own printing unit and started to put bold efforts towards it,” says Sajith. But it took 5 more years for them to make their dream a reality. Those 5 years gave them sufficient time to prepare for the launch of Orange. They could also amass enough funds to start Orange without availing any loan or selling ancestral property.

The beginning was at a small plot on Gandhari Ammankovil Junction,

near Statue, Trivandrum with a 2-color Heidelberg machine and less than a dozen staff. Though they were relatively newcomers to the industry the chemistry between them worked well and Orange became what it is today – a private limited company with systemic operational structure, state-of-the-art management system, standardized production facility and endless humane values attached to it. Orange out-grew

all expectations of others in the industry and could not remain in the confines of the small premises in the congested area of the city.

It was then Roy and Sajith decided to replant Orange into a bigger, spacious location. They found such a plot at Veli Industrial Area in the outskirts of the capital city, bought the land and constructed a 20,000 sq.ft. facility. They also bought some new machines

– Mitsubishi 28”x40” 4-colour, Komori 6-colour with coater, Komori 29” 4-colour, Komori 26” 4-colour and supporting equipment for CTP, advance pre-press software, full-fledged binding section – to make Orange a totally self-reliant printing press.

Orange Printers has today grown to become an establishment that employs over 100 people and does printing jobs for high-end clients. With a trusted name and a slogan of ‘More than Ink on Paper’, the company has moved into a system-driven management from person-driven management. The company has eight different departments with heads for each department and a pyramid structure of management with an independent board to monitor performance.

According to Sajith, “Every day is an achievement considering the kind of beginning we had with this company. I am proud of the growth pattern of this company from offset printing to variable data to security printing and now to packaging – and continuing the journey...”

“Hard work and commitment of our employees and mouth publicity given by our satisfied customers have made us stand up on our feet and fight everyday struggle with a smile,”say the partners unanimously. “It is strictly a team effort from the time a work order comes in, processing through pre- press, Press & post-press and till the moment work has been delivered to the customer, hundreds of employees are involved, each one doing a job and each job leading to overall business,” says Roy who looks after the production.

Sajith takes care of customer-relation and client servicing. “Trivandrum is not an industrial hub like Cochin. Being the capital city, the majority of population is government servants. Hence printing jobs are scarce. We started Orange knowing all this. But the risk was worth taking. Orange has clients from across the state and outside Kerala,” says Sajith.

“In printing, time and quality are money and speed and market is the bottom line. For Orange Printers, speed is not simply a rate of motion, it is a state of being. We have taken the industry’s demand for speed and incorporated it into the way we think, execute and

serve. We infuse a sense of urgency and momentum into everything we do from pre-press to fulfillment and every step in between. We understand that speed keeps us ahead of the curve along with matchless quality,” adds Roy.

Since printing industry is fast moving towards ground braking innovations and change, even changes are coming in to transform the concept of printing itself, we would like to say to our fellow printers – “be open for changes, be the change, love what you do. We love what

we do, we are proud to be a printer”. So, what next? We are in discussion

with experts and manufacturers regarding Digital Offset Press and Nano Printing technology as we are focused to make an immediate investment for the future, where we would like to become a name to reckon with in national and international level.

We have not achieved what we are capable of yet! We are still young, We are still on the road.

Miles to go before we rest!!!

Jacob George came to Kochi to meet KMPA members and talk about how the printers here are

leading the industry. And he came with specific questions. His first question was on the Goods and Service Tax bill (GST). Though the bill has not come into effect so far, it’s certain to be enforced sooner or later, may be with amendments suggested by various state governments. He said he had discussions on the subject with the members of Bombay Master Printers Association (BMPA) and Delhi Printers Association (DPA). If GST allows all stake-holders same opportunities and offer a level-playing field, then why don’t we accept GST? – that’s what

Mumbai printers said. Mumbai being a huge market for printing, printers won’t be much affected, they assumed. But DPA members had some apprehensions, he said.

Most KMPA members opined that 99% of their printed products are consumed within the state itself and for such states GST is indeed is not of much consequence. According to them, the present system of billing at 2% CST against C Form makes the printer to bear the 2% whereas the GST will remove even that – so the constraint of the tax would be on the final consumer and not on the producer of the goods. G. Venugopal of Sterling Printers and KMPA’s Immediate Past President, said

“GST would bring in a level playing field which would give an impetus for the industry to compete on common grounds and thus provide a better way of competing in the market”.

R. Gopakumar of GK Printers and Vice President of the Association, was of the opinion that this would be an impediment to the credit facilities being enjoyed by the printers since for example a Paper Company will have to bill at 18% (if GST is finally decide to be fixed at 18%) in order to place it in their godown in Kerala thus making it impossible for the company to provide you credit limits since the tax has to be paid in advance by the company concerned.

Kerala printers say it allMore than a dozen top print entrepreneurs from Kochi participated in a panel discussion moderated by Jacob George from PRESSIdeas, a leading Print Industry publication. Topics like print marketing, raw-material, labour issues and printers’ status in Kerala society were discussed at length. It was also an opportunity for printers to declare that the industry has come of age in Kerala and rearing to go.

O. Venugopal, Managing Director of Anaswara Offset Pvt. Ltd. and KMPA Coordinator, said “With the implementation of GST, it indeed would be a level playing field for printers across the states and it would only be the logistics that would curtail a printer from Kerala to sell his products in Kashmir and not the various state taxes as was the case earlier”.

Venugopal had a very interesting view to share which in fact must be applicable to printers across the country – he feels that it is an opportune time for printers to increase the printing rates since it is a matter of common knowledge today that GST would increase the prices of commodities on a general basis except of course if it is in the negative list (which we need to wait and watch!).

“We need to brace up and join our hands to actually increase the prices of print with this rule in place. This is important because it is only print which had reduced the rates over the years even though the costs have been increasing of all inputs over time, of which some may reason that the earnings were higher but it is now clear that the industry has reached a level of pricing which now is rather unsustainable and needs to be rectified for good, and this is the right time to do it,” O Venugopal emphasized.

Corruption in the government too is a matter of concern for the printers and the GST is seen to be a savior per se.

To Jacob’s query on labour issues in Kerala, everyone was of the opinion that

the issue was a matter of concern. According to the printers present at

the meeting, it was clear that labour cost is a matter of concern for not only the Kerala Print Industry but also industry in general and with new proposed directives / proposals, things will only be turning bad.

delivery schedules, basically production capabilities which now is gradually changing” said O. Venugopal.

With the number of new machines arriving in the state over the last three years, it is but natural that the quality as well as quantity aspect is being addressed to. There also has been an upsurge in import of post press equipments by the printers in the state, according to Nazir Marikavil of Super Bind. “Prepress in Kerala is already in an advanced state as across the country and it is also true that the import of new Printing machines and second hand Post Press machines have seen an amazing increase in the last three years which is good for the industry and is a natural reaction to the demands of the Kerala Market,” Nazir commented.

In the course of the discussion, one of the member, K.P. Uthup (Babu) of Colortone Process asked a very pertinent question saying “As businessmen, we are all serving the government by paying all types of taxes as demanded by the government but it is interesting to note that we have no pension plans from the government, we have no support whatsoever from any quarters in any terms as a major contributor to the economy. Is this fair by any standards?” he asked.

During the interesting discussion that lasted for two hours, Kerala printing community also expressed their disappointment over the society not giving the due respect and recognition to printers.

Jacob George (middle) of PRESSIdeas moderating the session. Clockwise from left: O. Venugopal, Raju N. Kutty, G. Venugopal and K.P. Uthup answering the queries at the session.

Talking about the general trend in the Kerala market, it was interesting to note that any client who needs to get a reasonable big quantity of printed products has an eye on the printers at Bangalore (if quality is what they are looking into) or Sivakasi (if quantity and time of delivery is of more concern) or they proceed to Chennai.

“Over the years, this has been the trend followed by printing customers in Kerala firstly because of the lack of quality printers and secondly because of inability to cater to quantities and

“The import of new Printing machines and second hand Post Press machines have seen an amazing increase in the last three years which is good for the industry and is a natural reaction to the demands of the Kerala Market,” commented Nazir Marikavil.

To introspect and express my impressions of the memories during the time of my presidency

is the prime motive behind writing this piece. Let me start with my introduction to Kerala Master Printers Association (KMPA).

O. Venugopal (Venuchettan of Anaswara Offset) and Joseph Cherukara Sir of Pagemakers came to my office at Sterling seeking my support for a Post-press consortium, a joint-venture planned by several KMPA members. As I understood then, it was a promising venture and we all, as printers, were extremely optimistic and enthusiastic on this project. But, for reasons that do not need any deliberations now, the project sadly had to be grounded. But in the process, I got accidently introduced to the members of KMPA and immediately felt that these were great people to move around and found myself completely at home amidst them. This was in 2008 and it was the beginning of a long association with some extraordinary people in Kerala’s Printing Industry.

I have been extremely blessed to have worked very closely with (Late) Jose Sir, Venu Sir, Babu Chettan, Muttathottil Sir and Rajan Chettan. I was just a member then and worked in the capacity of Chairman. Then I was entrusted with a more responsible position as the General Secretary of the Association. In the 36th Annual General Body Meeting held at Hotel Presidency on June 7, 2014, I was chosen as the KMPA President, Manmohan Shenoy as General Secretary and B.K. Rajan as the Treasurer. To say the truth, I actually succumbed to the friendly pressures of KMPA seniors to take up the post of the President.

Eventually, I became aware of the responsibilities that came along with the leadership. Those were not at all simple; I really had to put my time and energy into managing the association affairs. But fortunately, my colleagues and the experienced senior members were very supportive. I also understood in the course of time that KMPA is one of the very few trade associations that

functioned on democratic principles, with transparency.

After becoming the President the first few things that dawned in my head was the big question that ‘what is expected of me?’ What is it that I can deliver? I had to really work on a strategy that would put my personnel strength to use and overcome my weaknesses.

Probing my strengths and weaknesses, I wrote down ‘good and bad’ personal traits on a paper to get a self-assessment and I found that my strength was my social skills and my weakness was the lack of administrative skill. Then I made it a point to use my social skills to attract more members to the association activities and strive hard to nourish my administrative prowess, so that I can lead the organization efficiently.

One of the first goals of my team of office-bearers was to bring as many members as we could to attend the regular Monday meetings. Many of the ideas and the means to make the ideas practical are generated at these Monday meetings, though the important decisions are taken at the Managing Committee

My days as KMPA PresidentG. VENUGOPAL, Immediate Past President of KMPA, ruminates his experiences during his tenure (2014-16) in this frank retrospection.

The Print Miracle Expo - 2014, held at CIAL Trade Centre, Nedumbassery, was a great success and benefitted all printers in Kerala.

meetings. The support from seniors and various Committee Chairmen was great to see this objective through. We in the team always felt strongly that if we can create a lighter environment in the meetings and if a platform for exchanging pleasantries could be created, new ideas will flow much more easily and this experiment, I should say, worked to our advantage.

There was a new-found respect and love that I could feel from my peers in the industry and even in my own printing unit. As the President, my relation with people hitherto unfamiliar developed to a close one. I personally felt that the Association should bring about closeness among all members and should indulge in activities which should benefit all the members.

In the 2 years of my Presidency, we could forge great friendships among members and give an impetus to a lot

The first KMPA Print Awards conducted along with Print Miracle Expo – 2014 at Flora Airport Hotel, near Nedumbassery International Airport was the most glamorous event organized during G. Venugopal’s presidential tenure.

of activities like Onam celebrations, travelling together for exhibitions and arrange family get-togethers. We could also conduct 2 international seminars titled Print & Beyond. We could bring in some important personalities in the Printing field from India as well as abroad for the seminar. The participation was overwhelming and the knowledge imparted at the seminar was invaluable.

I think, the best achievement during my Presidency was the Print Miracle Expo – 2014, which was a great success and benefitted all printers in Kerala immensely. The preparation for the expo was hectic, I must say. Marathon meetings, brain-storming sessions, planning, signing MoU, drafting letters to hundreds of people in the Industry – what not! It was really grueling. The expo, conducted with the support of IntelTrade, was a big success, the feedback I got from various quarters later convinced me. It was the most important event in Kerala Printing Industry in 20 years.

The most glamorous event we ever organized was the first KMPA Print Awards, held along with Print Miracle Expo – 2014. The Awards was a platform to showcase the best printing jobs done by printers across the state. KMPA gave a chance to all printers in Kerala to vie for the awards. We didn’t care about their affiliation

to other printers’ association. All were welcome to compete and what a dazzling night it was! The awards ceremony transformed the Flora Airport Hotel, near Nedumbassery International Airport, into a festival ground on that night.

Apart from the glamour and ostentatiousness, what KMPA Print Awards did to the industry was pushing the barriers of printing standards and making a clear statement that ‘We, Kerala printers are capable of doing what the best in the industry world over.’

Another major achievement during my tenure was the Additional Skills Acquisition Programme (ASAP), a state-government initiative to train students and make them employable in various industrial sectors. The Kerala Govt. entrusted KMPA with the conduct of a labour-intensive course in Printing Technology after the association proved its capability through several meetings with the authorities and project presentations to them. Grooming a skilled workforce for printing industry has been one of the prime objectives of KMPA even before my tenure. But two projects – ASAP & Community College Scheme – launched during my tenure gave a greater momentum to the training initiative, I believe.

The ASAP course for first batches was completed after two years of training. Students from all centres have

completed their internship after exams at various printing establishments of KMPA members. I am also happy to see that several students were also absorbed by KMPA members in their presses as regular employees.

KMPA also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IPT Shoranur in 2015 under the Community College Scheme, a new concept of education launched by Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Govt of India, to provide practical training for the Printing Technology students of the institute at the printing units of the association members. The programme is continuing successfully.

Losing Jose Sir was the most painful loss for us. We could manage to purchase a property next to our office and have it named after Jose Sir. KMPA has much more to achieve. Whatever I have explained above are some of the few things I and my team could do for the association. I must also admit that almost all the projects materialized during my tenure were a culmination of long-term plans envisioned my predecessors. I just happened to be the leader when some of the programmes became a reality.

I may also take this opportunity to express my heart-felt gratitude to all who extended unstinted supported to me and my team – Venuchettan, who advised me on all matters, Nazir M., who beautifully renovated KMPA office, G. Rajesh, who managed ASAP affairs, Babuchettan, the Awards Committee Chairman, my General Secretary Manmohan, who made my job easy, Treasurer B.K. Rajan, who handled the finances efficiently and honestly, Shaji Manjooran, who used his network influence to organize venues for KMPA events and all other who selflessly helped me to run the association without any complaints.

The most important take from the experience of my Presidency are the following: (1) Change of responsibility should not be feared. (2) Not to aim for absolute perfection (3) everybody has a right to express an opinion, and (4) you cannot please everybody.

I had a great time in the helm of affairs of the Association and wish the new team the best of luck.

The participation at 1st and 2nd edition of Print & Beyond seminar was overwhelming and imparted invaluable knowledge to the participants.
