Our 5 Senses Mini-Unit
Created by: Jennie Beltz
Objective: TSW understand that humans have 5;
taste, touch, smell, hear, and sight, senses that help us
interact and respond to our environment. We have
special sense organs that help us learn about our
surroundings including our eyes, ears, nose, tongue,
skin.
We will do various hands-on activities during this unit.
The students may get messy hands and you may want to
ask parents for donations to help make this unit
successful!
I will include several blackline masters as well as a
description of the activity.
The first page of this unit is an assessment you can use
at the end of the unit.
The following pages are vocabulary cards that will help
your students with common vocabulary associated with
the 5 senses.
Enjoy!

Activity for sound:
Collect different materials that will make a sound
when dropped to the floor. Create a class chart
that allows students to make predictions. Also
leave a space to record actual findings. It might
look like this:
Object: Predictions: Outcome:
Fork Yes ___ No __
Cotton ball Yes ___ No __
Students will make predictions on whether or not
the object will create a sound when falling to the
floor. The outcome will record if the object did
or did not make a sound.
Some objects you might include:
Fork Tissue Foam letter
Cotton ball Pencil Piece of paper
Wooden block Glue stick Crayon
Activity for Touching:
Create touching boxes. Make 6, or any number,
touch boxes filled with a variety of materials. I
like to use Pringles cans, they are deep enough to
hold materials and keep out little eyes. You will
need baby wiped handy also. Give your students a
few to hold before you begin.
Allow each child to put their hand in the touch
box. After each box goes around, ask the
students for their predictions, What is in the
box? After they have offered their predictions,
share with them what is in the box.
Do this with all the boxes.
Some materials to include:
Jello Cooked Spaghetti Pinecone
Playdough Sandpaper Rocks
Shaving cream Piece of a soft blanket
