MWU-‐CDMA American Student Dental Association
IN THIS ISSUE: Clinical Simulation Course Recap
Midwestern University: Working Together
Welcome from MWU-‐CDMA ASDA President Welcome (Back) to Midwestern University!
I hope you all had an enjoyable summer, whether you spent it working in the clinic, studying for boards and enjoying your last summer vacation ever, or gearing up for your first year of dental school. No matter what you were up to, I hope you are refreshed and ready for another exciting year with the American Student Dental Association!
We were busy with the Clinical Simulation Course in June, where 160 pre-‐dental students over two weekends got a taste of dental school. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to make this a success! We also have been planning upcoming events, including a social with ASDOH ASDA and the 2nd annual Super Sealant Saturday event, which will take place on October 6. Last year we served over 300 kids and placed over 800 sealants and this year we are hoping to do even more to help our community! We also have some exciting trips coming up, including the brand new National Leadership Conference in Chicago this November!
As you may know, all D1s are automatically members of ASDA. If you pay for your D2 and D3 years, then Dr. Gilpatrick will also pay for your D4 year! That’s four years of awesome opportunities with ASDA for the price of two! Our new Executive Council and Committee Chairs are ready to make this the best year of ASDA yet, but we can’t do it without active members! I highly encourage all of you to get involved with ASDA this year!
Let’s get this party started!

The 4th annual ASDA Dental Simulation Course held at the Midwestern University Glendale campus was a huge success this summer. Over the course of two weekends in June, over 150 participants came onto the campus and were able to get a glimpse into the life of a Dental student. The course is meant to be a window into what day to day life is like during dental school. Even though the “true experience” can only come from actually being in a program, as we all know so well, those who attended were able to gain experience in various activities that they would not have been able to anywhere else.
Travelling to Glendale, Arizona from 17 states as well as from Canada, the MWU-‐Glendale ASDA Chapter welcomed attendees onto campus and into

our classrooms and Simulation Lab. Starting immediately on the first morning of the course, we presented them with lectures about the various aspects of dentistry. Topics ranged from the basics such as the tooth numbering system and general anatomy to more complex concepts such as detailed morphology, waxing, and even preparations. Once the lectures were given, participants then travelled into our Simulation lab to work hands-‐on with current dental students and faculty about the topics they had just learned about. Participants were allowed to do impressions and models, tooth waxing, composite restorations, and even Class I Preps at the very end of the course.

A highlight for many participants seemed to be the interaction with the faculty and student volunteers during the course. Many were gearing up to take the DAT and/or start applying to programs, and had numerous questions about admissions, financial aid, studying, student life, and so much more. The valuable insight seemed to be much appreciated, and all of us volunteers were more than happy to give back to pre-‐dents in a way that many of us were not as lucky to have experienced in those stressful, uncertain times of applying to dental school.
The course is held annually in June, and it’s competitive out there, so spread the word to any pre-‐dent you may know so that they can be as well prepared as possible when it comes time for them to apply!

Midwestern University: Working Together

Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine, being a fairly new school (we only just graduated our
inaugural class in May), has become accustomed to modifications in scheduling, curriculum order, various methods of standardizing evaluation of performance and procedures in clinic, etc. When our clinic first opened in June of 2010, the inaugural class worked in pairs to provide patient care. Towards the end of their D3 year when the second class moved over to clinic, the original pairings were broken up and it was proposed that the pairs be split and students work alone. The inaugural class worked with the administration to maintain the clinic partner model, which resulted in each pair consisting of a D3 student and a D4 student. This allows for wonderful continuity of care for our patients, since the D4 student will eventually graduate but the patient will still know
2
and be familiar with the D3 student now entering their D4 year. We notice that patients appreciate always being with the same pair of students, and they get excited for us as we approach graduation.
Not only is it beneficial to the patient, but it has also fostered a positive learning environment for the students. It increases efficiency and has augmented our abilities to get procedures done, keep in touch with patients, keep up-‐to-‐date and accurate charts, use new and different materials, break down and set up operatories, complete lab work, and all the other little things that need to be done in clinic. Since clinic requires so many roles of dental students, it is really a team effort with a clinic partner. This model helps things run more smoothly between patients, and it allows us to see more patients in a day than if we worked alone. We are able to “split pairs” when we have procedures like perio maintenance, periodic exams and prophys, or simple restorations – but there’s nothing like having someone who knows what it’s like to prep a crown hold the high volume suction during YOUR crown prep!
3
This model increases patient familiarity with the students, and helps the students work more efficiently. But equally important to the overall experience at our dental clinic, we are learning what it’s like to work with an assistant. Graceful delivery of constructive criticism and friendly suggestions, as well as teamwork in treatment planning and problem-‐solving, makes for a great clinic experience that is preparing us for private practice. Someday, we will all have to train our assistants to our own preferences, and we will all need to know how to appreciate our staff. By playing all of these roles in clinic already, I know I can’t wait to thank my front desk staff and assistants for making patient phone calls and organizing a beautiful patient schedule!

Why ASDA?
Membership & Benefits
What is ASDA? ASDA is a an organization committted to Dental Students and our future. As their mission states, “The American Student Dental Association is a national student-‐run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of dental students. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.” ASDA has provided me with great opportunities and has really benefitted my dental school experience. You may be asking yourself how does joining ASDA benefit me directly and how can you join?

Why ASDA? from page 6…
3. Political Action:
It affects you! ASDA advocates for the rights of dental students on many topics some key topics are midlevel providers, barriers to cares, NBDE pass/fail, Licensure exam and the ethical dilemmas facing students. ASDA’s main voice is through ADPAC, American Dental Political Action Committee that we encourage all ASDA members to join by donating $5.
What is ADPAC?
The American Dental Political Action Committee (ADPAC) is the bipartisan legislative arm of the American Dental Association. ADPAC gives a political voice to thousands of dental students and dentists who care deeply about their patients and their profession.
What does ADPAC do?
ADPAC supports members and potential members of Congress who favor such legislative issues as reducing barriers to care, increasing student loan interest deductions and expanding community dental health programs. Across the country, grassroots dentists work to establish and maintain meaningful relationships with their members of Congress. Combining resources via ADPAC gives you the chance to have an impact on political forces affecting your professional lives.
4. 4. Community Service:
Locally our ASDA chapter has great opportunities for you to get involved in community service events. Two of our larger events include Super Sealant Saturday (fall ‘12) and Give Kids A Smile (spring ‘13). Both events see around 300 low-‐income families that receive preventative dental treatment for their children. Last years Super Sealant Saturday was a success providing services that included over 305 limited exams, 800 sealants, 260 prophys, 249 fluoride applications, and over 153 hours of oral hygiene instruction to both parents and their children. Total services provided from the event are valued at over $100,000. This year’s Super Sealant Saturday will be held on October 6, 2012.

Survival Tips for D1s (1st year students)
What did you do before dental school? After high school I enlisted in the Marines for 4 years. Afterwards I earned my Mechanical Engineering degree from the Colorado School of Mines and then worked for as an oilfield engineer for Halliburton. My oilfield work brought me to Grand Junction, Colorado. When I wasn't in school or working I was usually skiing, mountain biking, and 4 wheeling in my Jeep.
Favorite thing about dental school? Getting the good experience I need to be a dentist. Favorite procedure? Probably endo, there is something appealing about doing work where you cannot see it.
Why did you join ASDA? It is a good opportunity to network and benefits like insurance.
What is your favorite ASDA event? Give kids A Smile. It is a great opportunity to work with some really awesome patients!
Plans after graduation? I am heading back to Colorado for general practice, most likely Grand Junction but maybe Durango, Ouray or Telluride.
“Welcome CDMA Class of 2016! My D1 Survival Tips are: • Get off to a strong start, because our program "takes off" on Day 1, and you'll have Basic Science exams every week! • You've finally made it to dental school! So collaborate and don't compete with each other -‐ the Class of 2016 is a Team. • Find good faculty mentors and upperclass dental student mentors to help guide you -‐ make these your "go-‐to" people. • We're all here to help you be successful! Congratulations, and we look forward to working with you!”
-‐ David Rolf, DMD, MS Associate Professor, CDMA
“The first year of dental school will be full of challenges. However, remember that you worked very hard to get where you are. Try your best each and every day, and do not forget to take breaks…spend time with your family and friends, go to the gym for a workout, or continue a hobby that you enjoy. Make the most of your education at Midwestern because this is where you will build the foundation for the rest of your life!”
-‐ Jacqueline Hilton ’15
“Best wishes for the incoming class. If I were to advise a student on how to be successful in the study of pathology I would recommend that the student define all medical terms in the material to be covered. A quick review of material before coming to class will facilitate understanding of the large volume of material that we will cover in each lecture.”
-‐ Dana Devine, DO Clinical Associate Professor, AZCOM
“Enjoy being in dental school! It doesn't come around twice. Remember to always be humble and respectful, you'll reap what you sow.”
-‐ Monica Tjang ’14

How many years have you been practicing dentistry? I graduated from the University of Pittsburg in 1991 and was in private practice until 2008. I have been teaching at MWU since 2008. I also taught previously at a dental hygiene program in Harrisburg for 17 years.
What do you love the most about teaching at MWU? I like the students. I like the quality and the true interest our student body has in dentistry.
What is your favorite ASDA event and why? Give Kids A Smile and Super Sealant Saturday, because we have an opportunity to give back to the community and help kids who have dental care needs. I think it’s important for MWU to be a good community partner and teach dental students that their important professional responsibility is to give back to the community that supports the profession.
Anything else to share? I would encourage each and every dental student to get involved in organized dentistry throughout your career to provide valuable input on issues that affect your professional lives.
