THE BATAAN MEMORIAL DEATH MARCH, March 20, 2016 - Remember Bataan. Always. There are marathons,
and then there is the Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon - unlike all others. Participants experience
history while honoring the warfighters who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II and were
surrendered to Japanese forces. Approximately 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were marched
90 miles through the scorching heat of the Philippine jungles to prison camps. Thousands died along the route
and many more died in POW camps in the Philippines or while being transported by ship to Japan. To honor
these brave warfighters, members of the military, military families, and civilians gather at White Sands Missile
Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico to learn the history of the Bataan Death March, to meet survivors, and to
march/run. Marchers compete in several categories, including "light" and "heavy" categories, individual and
team categories, and military and civilian categories. The "military heavy" category requires marchers to carry
35 pounds (imagine seven, 5 lb. bags of flour) while running 26.2 miles through high desert terrain (4200' -
5300') in full military uniform - including boots. http://bataanmarch.com/

GUILLERMO J. GRENIER & CORINNA J. MOEBIUS - A HISTORY OF LITTLE HAVANA. Friday, October 23, 2015 - 8:00pm. In the heart of Miami, Little Havana is a
neighborhood buzzing with culture. Still imagined as primarily a Cuban extension of the city, it has been a sanctuary to refugees since the 1959
revolution and has experienced fascinating changes to become what it is today. Find out how a location associated with old Cubans playing
dominos has become a vibrant, multi-ethnic community and a birthplace of Miami's most exciting arts and music movements. Learn why Little
Havana has continued to serve as a political stage for thousands of Cubans demonstrating on its streets, like the famous Calle Ocho. Authors
Guillermo Grenier and Corinna Moebius trace the history and growth of this Latino epicenter in the first in-depth portrait of a world-renowned
neighborhood. About the Authors: Guillermo J. Grenier is professor of sociology and graduate program director in the department of global and
sociocultural studies at Florida International University, the state university of Florida in Miami. Born in Havana, Cuba, Dr. Grenier is one of the
founders of the Miami School of social analysis and has authored or co-authored six books and dozens of articles on labor, migration, immigrant
incorporation and Cuban-American ideological profiles, particularly in the Greater Miami area. Corinna Moebius is a cultural anthropologist. Moebius
lives in Little Havana and leads walking tours of the neighborhood. She is co-founder of the Little Havana Merchant Alliance and former director of
Viernes Culturales, the neighborhood's monthly arts festival.

LEONARD PITTS, JR. - GRANT PARK. Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 4:00pm. About the Book: Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. will be releasing his new
novel, GRANT PARK, on October 13, 2015. Following the breakthrough success of his previous novel, FREEMAN, Mr. Pitts returns with an even more
complex, suspenseful, and intricate story. Grant Park begins in 1968, with Martin Luther King Jr.’s final days in Memphis. The story then moves to
the eve of the 2008 presidential election, and ricochets between the two eras as it unfolds. Disillusioned and outraged by yet another report of
unarmed black men gunned down by police, esteemed journalist Malcolm Toussaint surreptitiously posts an incendiary column that leads to the
ouster of his longtime white editor, Bob Carson, and Toussaint’s own mysterious disappearance. Carson and Toussaint subsequently become
entangled in a dangerous plot surrounding Barack Obama’s election-night rally in Chicago, which leads to both confronting choices they made
during their work in the civil rights movement 40 years prior. This book is a bold and provocative take on politics, race, and recent US history—and
yet another demonstration that Leonard Pitts, Jr., long recognized as one of America’s best columnists, has emerged as an important voice in
contemporary American fiction. About the Author: In a career spanning more than 35 years, Leonard Pitts, Jr. has been a columnist, a college
professor, a radio producer and a lecturer. But if you ask him to define himself, he will invariably choose one word. He is a writer, period, author
of one of the most popular newspaper columns in the country and of a series of critically-acclaimed books, including his latest, a novel called
Freeman. And his lifelong devotion to the art and craft of words has yielded stellar results, chief among them the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for
commentary. Leonard Pitts was born and raised in Southern California. He was awarded a degree in English from the University of Southern
California at the age of 19, having entered school at 15 on a special honors program. Since 1995, he has lived in Bowie, Maryland, a suburb of
Washington, DC with his wife and family.
SHARON MILLAR - THE WHALE HOUSE - Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 6:00pm. A boy is killed on a government minister’s orders as part of his mission to clean up the
country and others made complicit must explore their consciences; a youth gets ready to play his role in the country’s lucrative kidnap business; a
sister tries to make peace with the parents of the white American girl her brother has murdered; a gangster makes his posthumous lament.
Trinidad in all its social tumult is ever present in these stories, which range across the country’s different ethnic communities, across rural and
urban settings, from locals and expatriates to the moneyed elite and the poor scrabbling for survival. What ties the collection together is Sharon
Millar’s achievement of a distinctively personal voice: cool, unsentimental and empathetic. If irony is the only way to inscribe contemporary
Trinidad, there is also room for both generous humor and the possibility of redemption. About the Author: Sharon Millar is the recipient of the
Commonwealth Short Story Prize and the Small Axe Short Fiction Prize. Her work has appeared in Granta Online, the Manchester Review, and
Small Axe, and was also featured in the anthology Pepperpot: The Best New Stories from the Caribbean. To be introduced by: Geoffrey Philp.
Special Guest: Keith Jardim.
TIM WEINER - ONE MAN AGAINST THE WORLD - MDC Wolfson: Chapman Conference Center. Monday, October 26, 2015 - 7:00pm. A shocking and riveting look at one
of the most dramatic and disastrous presidencies in US history, from Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner Tim Weiner. Based largely on
documents declassified only in the last few years, One Man Against the World paints a devastating portrait of a tortured yet brilliant man who led
the country largely according to a deep-seated insecurity and distrust of not only his cabinet and congress, but the American population at large.
In riveting, tick-tock prose, Weiner illuminates how the Vietnam War and the Watergate controversy that brought about Nixon's demise were
inextricably linked. From the hail of garbage and curses that awaited Nixon upon his arrival at the White House, when he became the president of
a nation as deeply divided as it had been since the end of the Civil War, to the unprecedented action Nixon took against American citizens, who he
considered as traitorous as the army of North Vietnam, to the infamous break-in and the tapes that bear remarkable record of the most intimate
and damning conversations between the president and his confidantes, Weiner narrates the history of Nixon's anguished presidency in fascinating
and fresh detail. A crucial new look at the greatest political suicide in history, One Man Against the World leaves us not only with new insight into
this tumultuous period, but also into the motivations and demons of an American president who saw enemies everywhere, and, thinking the world
was against him, undermined the foundations of the country he had hoped to lead. About the Author: Tim Weiner is the author of five books.
Legacy of Ashes, his history of the CIA, won the National Book Award. His journalism on secret government programs received the Pulitzer Prize
for national reporting. As a correspondent for The New York Times, he covered war and terrorism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Sudan, and other
nations. He directs the Carey Institute's nonfiction residency program in upstate New York and teaches as an Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in
American Studies at Princeton. Free and Open to Public, 300 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33132.
