Bulletin M USEUM OF A RT u P ERFORMING A RTS u S CHOOL OF A RT APRIL 2014 World-Class Dance Ensemble Returns to Great Artists Series Tuesday, April 29 • 7:30 p.m. T he Museum of Art showcases the rich influence of Japanese art and culture on European and American decorative and fine arts with the exhibition Butterflies, Geishas, and Dragons: The Arts and Influence of Japan, on view April 11 through September 28. Japan had been closed to the West for approximately 300 years when, in 1853, its ports reopened for trade, which caused a fascination for Japanese culture in late-19th-century Europe and the United States. Expositions in Paris and London introduced silk fabrics, kimonos, fans, screens, and other items to wide audiences. The craze inspired Gilbert and Sullivan to write The Mikado and had a profound influence on artists such as James Whistler and Claude Monet; indeed, it is difficult to imagine Impressionism without the decorative patterning and transitory moments of life as captured in the ukiyo-e school, or “floating world,” of Japan’s prints. Butterflies, Geishas, and Dragons features a wide array of objects, from netsuke and Japanese woodblock prints to ceramics, silver, and graphic arts created by Western artists inspired by the rich patterns, subject matter, and use of pictorial space in Japanese art. World-Class Dance Ensemble Returns toGreat Artists Series

The Museum of Art showcases the rich influence of Japanese art and culture on Europeanand American decorative and fine arts with the exhibition Butterflies, Geishas, and Dragons:The Arts and Influence of Japan, on view April 11 through September 28.

Photographer and printmaker Brian Ogles-bee was born in Chicago in 1951. In theearly 1970s he attended the School of ArtInstitute of Chicago. In 1976 he moved toupstate New York, where he taught photog-raphy and printmaking at Alfred University.

His work has been exhibited in solo andgroup shows in the United States, Europeand Asia and is represented in collectionsinternationally. He has twice been grantedfellowships by the New York Foundation forthe Arts.

Since 1987, Brian has maintained a studioin Wellsville, NY.

Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute’s firstannual Elizabeth Lemieux Honorary PrattMWPFaculty Lecture Series presents PrattMWP Ce-ramics Professor Bryan McGrath.

Bryan joined the PrattMWP faculty in 1985 ashead of the ceramics department. A potter for42 years, his work has been included in severalceramics publications. He has conducted nu-merous workshops on kiln construction andthrowing. His travels include research and studytrips to Japan and lecturing and teaching in Ire-land.

His works are in private collections in the U.S.,Japan, Australia, and Ireland; and in public collections in the United States.
