MYWEEKLYPREVIEW.COM.AU MY WEEKLY PREVIEW \ AUGUST 16, 2013 [ 5 ]

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us! This week the MWP staff have been in party mode, celebrating our

f fth year pumping out our weekly publication. My Property Preview, this magazine’s previous incarnation, rolled off the presses back in 2008. How much has the world, and our region, changed since then? Mind you, there are still plenty of us here in the MWP off ce who were there for that f rst issue. Three cheers for us!

Since that f rst issue and throughout our f ve years, we have aimed to be the repository (or is that ‘suppository’, Mr Abbott?) of wisdom for the people of the Coast. We have run stories about the tough stuff (male depression and missing persons) and celebrated all the good things about our region (our thriving business community, our natural beauty and generous locals). We’ve covered

changes in technology and changes of government, health and science, and local issues that impact us all. Our aim has always been to inform and educate, and we hope you have been entertained along the way as well.

This week our birthday edition coincides with the running of the f rst Sunshine Coast Tough Mudder event. This weekend we are welcoming lots of visitors to our region. We hope you enjoy your stay.

And for the locals getting in amongst it down in the bush behind Caloundra, and I know quite a few of you who are, good luck. I hear you’ll need it!

In property this week we have a chat to real estate great Michael Davoren – that’s over on page 36. And we have the usual packed fashion spread (on page 26), motoring (on page 31) plus our special retirement feature (page 28). Hip, hip hooray.

4 DAY FORECAST

SURF REPORTWith Steve Harris from Suburban SurfThis week still looks pretty sad in the hope for a long overdue swell. From Tuesday to Thursday there is an inconsistent E/SE ground swell with waves only around the one to two-foot mark. Winds through to Friday will be tending northerly with lighter NW in the morning. Spots to check would be the open beaches for more swell early, then the northerly corners in the arvos. Saturday has a southerly change

with SW winds early, followed by a SE change. However, waves will be even smaller Saturday around the half to one-foot mark. Hopefully there is a small southerly ground swell predicted to build for Sunday arvo. So hit the open beaches. However, winds will be from the E/NE, making it a bit messy. High tide is between mid-morning and lunchtime all this week and the water temp is still sitting around the 20-degree mark. A spring suit for the early morning is

a good call. Good surfing and he e’s hoping for at least some rideable waves.

plenty for the rest of the region to grin about. The event is bringing worldwide recognition and lots of visitor dollars to our region.

Tough Mudder has already added to the local economy. The Sunshine Coast Council tells MWP that the Events Centre at Caloundra is doing most of the catering and accommodating the 45 staff for the weekend, but the benef ts to other businesses are also being felt indirectly and no doubt will continue to be felt as all those visitors eat, sleep and play in our region.

The council is reporting that much of the accommodation between Golden Beach and Mooloolaba has been sold out due to the event, with the impact being felt in Maroochydore and even the hinterland and Noosa.

Percy’s Hire and Coates Hire have also received such huge orders for equipment that they have had to approach other local hire companies to f ll those orders.

Earlier this year, My Weekly Preview brought you news of the Tough Mudder event, a now global phenomenon that is

making its way to our region this weekend. You probably live with, work with or know someone who is taking part, and you’ve probably seen groups of locals sweating it out in training sessions and boot camps in preparation for the big weekend.

The f rst Tough Mudder event was run in 2010, and now, just three years later, many hundreds of thousands of people around the world have been electrocuted, dunked in ice water, bruised, battered and even broken in their quest to conquer an obstacle course that takes most people (who f nish) more than three hours to complete.

Come Saturday and Sunday, there will be plenty of smiles from the grimy faces of those who make it to the end of the course, but there is also

The 20-kilometre Tough Mudder course is located on land owned by developer Stockland, and is earmarked to become the Caloundra South community.

When Tough Mudder’s George Spring spoke with MWP earlier this year, he praised Stockland and the council, saying, “We have never had so much co-operation, goodwill and enthusiasm from any region that we have dealt with.”

Stockland regional manager Ben Simpson says, “The course and huge number of competitors requires a large area, so Stockland is happy to host the event on our land at Caloundra South.

“On behalf of Stockland, I am delighted we can work with Sunshine Coast Council to facilitate this exciting event for the Sunshine Coast community. Tough Mudder will attract thousands of participants and spectators to Caloundra. This will deliver a major boost to the local economy.”

FAST FACTS

At least 26,000 people have registered for the Sunshine Coast weekend, making it the

biggest Tough Mudder event in the world this year.

19,000 people are

registered to take part on Saturday, making it the

biggest single Tough Mudder day in history.

Close to 10,000 spectators have already bought tickets to watch the action.

More than 1000 participants worldwide now have the Tough Mudder logo

tattooed to their skin.

For the f rst time the volunteer register has been

closed before the event due to the huge response.

SOURCE: SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL AND TOUGHMUDDER.COM

According to Tough Mudder, 80 per cent of participants in its events are part of a team. And it makes sense – you’ll need a group of good friends to drag you up those slippery slopes and retrieve you from the muddy troughs of icy water.

Business colleagues, groups of mates, sporting teams and families are all gathering together to take part. And plenty of corporate groups and companies have teams in the running.

Land owner Stockland isn’t being left out. It is f elding a local team of 20 members, who have discovered that preparations for the unique set of obstacles require an original and inventive approach to training. The team’s sprints on Kawana Beach and runs around Lake Kawana have been combined with less conventional methods including jumping into swimming pools fully clothed.

Stockland regional manager Ben Simpson is looking forward to the challenge of completing the course with his colleagues

tomorrow. “The Stockland team is really excited about the challenge of participating in Tough Mudder,” Simpson says. “We’ve been training regularly for a couple of months and we’re feeling ready for action.

“We’ve run up hills, sprinted in the sea, jumped over walls and even piggy-backed our partners around our homes. We might not be the f ttest team but we’re big on enthusiasm.

“We’ve enjoyed wonderful winter sunshine on the Coast recently so we have found it hard to f nd any mud to practice in. We’ve improvised with sand on the beach instead,” he says.

Several residents of Stockland’s Bells Reach community at Caloundra will also participate in Tough Mudder alongside the Stockland team.

“Good luck to the thousandsof people testing themselves and their teams against the Tough Mudder course,” Simpson adds. “I hope everybody involved enjoys their visit to this stunning region.”

AWARD LIGHTS THE WAY FITZY CHARMS FULL HOUSEIn the lead-up to the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards, MWP sat down with Tania Hubbard.

[ L O C A L N E W S ]

Q. Tell us about your business. A. The Gluten Free Grain Free Company has three areas of expertise – publishing, manufacturing and education. We are Australia’s leading gluten-free grain-free company with a strong emphasis on innovation, research and development, integration of functional foods, product development, market research and food trend analysis. We touch people’s lives with great food, we problem solve for our customers, we develop products and services our customers tell us they need and do our best to deliver joy into our customers’ lives.Q. What did winning the award last year mean to you? A. I would start off by saying I didn’t let the award def ne who I am. Instead I have used it as inspiration and aff rmation to keep doing what I love, to keep discovering, to keep developing and growing. The award motivated me to look at how I can strengthen me and my business, to f nd mentors and peers who both support and push me to the edges of what I think I can do. This award is a bright light on my journey – it

doesn’t change my intrinsic value as a woman but reminds me we can all achieve greatness and that each of us can go out and change the world.Q. How has it helped your business and prof le in the past 12 months? A. The award has provided a unique opportunity for me to network with previous and current winners, collaborate on a number of projects including launching Australia’s only gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, dairy-free Christmas cake mix in 2012 with another of the 2012 winner. This story garnered media support across Australia and thanks to the hard work of my media and PR team became one of the lead stories for my industry throughout November and December 2012.Q. What does the future hold?A. I am launching my second book in 2014 and launching a new range of products including a gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, dairy-free, yeast-free bread. I am rolling out our national workshops and working on some new products for our cake range (some lovely new f avours using only the best quality ingredients), and heading back overseas for speaking and other opportunities.Q. Any advice for budding SCBW and this year’s nominees?A. Build a business around a model that adds value, meaning and joy to your customers’ lives and don’t shrink away from that. Stand up and shine. Be the best you can be. A cliche? Yep, but forever true in life and in business.

Tania Hubbard from the Gluten Free Grain Free Company was 2012’s Outstanding Business Woman of the Year.

There’s an art to spinning a good yarn and even greater skill in delivering it verbally,

but Peter FitzSimons has certainly mastered it.

He won over the sell-out crowd of 250 at the Hot Business Events breakfast at the Maroochydore RSL last week, with a series of entertaining stories covering sport, politics and history.

The former Wallaby has made a name for himself as a newspaper columnist, author and public speaker and is renowned for telling it the way he sees it.

FitzSimons books include biographies of WWII resistance f ghter Nancy Wake, former Australian Labor Party leader Kim Beazley, as well as a number of historical books on subjects such as Kokoda, Tobruk and Batavia.

FitzSimons says he uses three researchers and about f ve experts when writing his books.

“I’m constantly putting it to the experts to get it as close to

Kunda Park business Whale Bins has won the supply contract for all general and construction waste on site at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital project.

SCUH project director Mark Buckle says in previous Lend Lease projects, construction waste was taken to landf ll and recycling is a new initiative at the SCUH site.

“Having Whale Bins on site means we can now recycle all of the construction waste from the site through Whale Resource Recovery, including concrete, soils, metals, gyprock, cardboard and even polystyrene, which provides a reduction in the carbon footprint,” Buckle says.

Winning the tender on the SCUH project means Whale Bins and Whale Resource Recovery will be able to employ up to 28 permanent and part-time staff at the peak of construction.

The partnership was off cially launched this week.

The next event will be a dinner featuring comedian Peter Rowsthorn at Mooloolaba Surf Club on Thursday September 5.

Cambodian orphans are on Georgia’s mind

New Big Top to bring back village market vibe

[ L O C A L N E W S ]

Nambour Special School reaped the rewards of six years of committed work when it received a School of Excellence award through Education Queensland’s Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Support program on July 29.

Representatives from the Department of Education, Training and Employment and Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) presented the award to school principal Richard Fisher at a school assembly.

It is the only special school in the Sunshine Coast north region to have been recognised with the award, and joins a handful of mainstream schools who have achieved this level of behavioural excellence.

“It’s fantastic and it’s a great achievement,” says Fisher. “The reason we were so pleased to receive the award is because it’s a whole school thing – every single person, from teachers, to admin staff, to teacher aides and cleaners – everyone’s aware of the way we talk about student

Nambour Special School awarded for behaviour Georgia Brittain is using her

annual school fair as an opportunity to raise money for underprivileged children in Cambodia.

The 14-year-old Matthew Flinders Anglican College student is selling copies of Food For The Soul Cambodian Cookbook at the Flinders Festival, with all proceeds going to the Together for Cambodia orphanage in Siem Reap.

“I sort of have a passion about helping people who aren’t as fortunate as us and just thought it would be nice to raise even more money than is being done so that those children get a life that they deserve and so that they stop living in poverty,” Brittain says.

She found out about the orphanage when researching an English assignment in which she had to do a presentation on a hero. The hero she chose was My Weekly Preview publisher Michael Kramer.

The Big Top Shopping Centre’s makeover has been dubbed “revolutionary” by an independent property consulting f rm.

According to the Urbis report, the innovative decision to return to the ways of an earlier era by holding farmers markets alongside supermarkets and retail shops is “at the leading edge of Australian fresh food retailing”.

Urbis Director Rhys Quick says while the unique concept may have been born out of necessity to complement not compete with neighbouring Sunshine Plaza, the developers were pioneering a shopping experience that pays tribute to the markets of old.

“The traditional market square is

reminiscent of village markets from days long gone,” he says.

“What we are now seeing with the rise of the farmers’ markets is a desire to return to that simple retail experience where consumers are seeking fresh, organic and local goods, often with a direct interaction with the original producer.”

Urbis’ analysis indicates pairing a strong Woolworths supermarket with the market will increase turnover for specialty shops by 30 per cent.

UDIA Sunshine Coast branch president Andrew Stevens says the revitalised Big Top Shopping Centre will help create a bustling CBD.

“The UDIA supports projects which have long-term sustainable benef ts to the local economy.”

runs the fundraising for the orphanage in Australia and organised the production and distribution of the cookbook, which is sold in local cafes and Spotlight stores.

Flinders Festival will feature entertainment, an art exhibition, international food festival, markets, and youth music festival as well as Oz Tag, pottery smash, a climbing wall and giant chess. A f reworks f nale will take place at 6pm.

It’s on from 11am to 6pm on Saturday August 24 at the school on Stringybark Road, Buderim.

management and how we talk to students, and that’s the especially pleasing part to me. Everyone can give themselves a pat on the back.”

Nambour Special School applied to begin the SWPBS program in September 2007 and the f rst team was trained in the f rst school term of 2008.

SWPBS is about acknowledging the positive student behaviours that occur every day. It has been a six-year process involving staff, parents and students to embed the SWPBS philosophy throughout the school.

Brisbane’s lord mayor wants to ease helmets laws to help revive the city’s failed bike

hire scheme, a rival councillor says.Brisbane City Council has

told a Queensland parliamentary committee compulsory bike helmet laws should be relaxed in areas where cyclists will not be near cars, such as on bike paths and in parks.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has backed the proposal. Further comment from Quirk has been sought.

But Labor councillor Kim Flesser, who was seriously injured in a bike accident in 2003, says it’s appalling

Pakistani businessman Malik Amir Mohammad Khan Afridi has been kidnapped,

threatened with death, forcibly displaced and lives apart from his family, all because of his enormous moustache.

Impeccably trimmed to 76 centimetres, Afridi spends 30 minutes a day washing, combing, oiling and twirling his facial hair into two arches that reach to his forehead, defying gravity.

“People give me a lot of respect. It’s my identity,” says the 48-year-old grandfather in the north-western city of Peshawar, when asked why he was prepared to risk everything for his whiskers.

“I feel happy. When it’s ordinary, no one gives me any attention. I got used to all the attention and I like it a lot,” he says.

In Pakistan, Islamist militants try to enforce religious doctrine that a moustache must be trimmed, if not shaved off.

So Afridi went from celebrity to prisoner of Lashkar-e-Islam, then a rival and now an ally of the Taliban in the tribal district of Khyber on the Afghan border.

First the group demanded protection money of $500 a month. When he refused, four gunmen turned up at his house in 2009.

He says they held him prisoner for a month in a cave and released him only when he agreed to cut it off.

“I was scared they would kill me, so that’s why I sacrif ced my moustache,” he says.

He f ed to relative safety in Peshawar. But he grew his facial hair back and in 2012 the threats started again – telephone calls from people threatening to slit his throat.

Quirk is supporting the change.Flesser says ratepayers had

already spent $14 million on the council’s CityCycle program, which allows people to hire bikes at terminals across the inner-city and surrounding areas.

“The Lord Mayor thinks if the helmet laws are relaxed, more people will pay to use his CityCycles,” Flesser says.

“It’s absolutely outrageous that Graham Quirk is willing to put people’s safety at risk, just to help prop up his embarrassing CityCycle scheme.”

Flesser says his helmet saved his life during his crash. “[Quirk] should spend some time at local hospitals talking to surgeons and experts in preventing injury – not one of them will say bike helmets don’t save lives,” he says.

Queensland Parliament’s Transport, Public Housing and Local Government Committee will hold public hearings next week and table its report in November. AAP

HELMET LAWS QUESTIONED MALIK’S HAIRY SITUATION

EPA

So he left the Taliban-hit north-west altogether, moving to the Punjabi city of Faisalabad and returning to Peshawar to visit his family only once or twice a month.

It costs $150 a month to maintain – more than a Pakistani teacher can earn – although he gets a moustache bursary of $50 from the home district in the lawless tribal belt he was forced to f ee.

The Khyber administration pays anything from $10 to $60 a month to men with particularly eye-catching moustaches as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for the bravery and virility traditionally associated with such facial hair.

Afridi has a hairdryer, bars of soap, shampoo, an alleged German oil from Dubai whose label he has ripped off so no one knows its alchemy, a mirror and an old bottle of homemade coconut oil.

He massages the secret oil into his whiskers and twirls them before striding around a shopping mall, quickly attracting a crowd.

But Afridi’s wife and 10 children are not so keen.

“Sometimes my family tell me ‘cut it, it would be better if you lived with us’. I can leave my family, I can leave Pakistan, but I can never cut my moustache again,” he says.

So his dream is to f nd political asylum or represent Pakistan at an international competition.

But he has a way to go. An Indian holds the record for the world’s longest moustache at 4.29 metres.

“I don’t like smoking,” Afridi says. I’m not fond of snuff, or drinking. This is the only choice in my life. I’d even sacrif ce food, but not the moustache. It’s my life. It’s not part of my life. It is my life.” AAP

REAL FOOD FESTIVAL TOAST OF THE TOWN

Win a double pass

Ten thousand people are expected to visit the Sunshine Coast Real Food

Festival at Maleny next month to celebrate the region’s best food and produce.

Festival director Julie Shelton says it’s a celebration of the variety of real foods available from Sunshine Coast producers, manufacturers, retailers and restaurants.

“This is a celebration f rst and foremost of Sunshine Coast food,” Shelton says.

The former organic farmer is passionate about the local food industry and says it is critical we highlight the food that is grown and produced on the Sunshine Coast.

“Partly because our food producers and our food are under so much pressure,” she says.

Small-scale food suppliers and producers with seasonal products f nd it hard to get a place in the supermarkets and Shelton says the festival helps them with B2B networking to f nd alternative markets and to generally raise awareness about the quality and variety of food here.

“If we don’t value our food producers we’re going to lose them,” she says.

We have two double passes to the Real Food Festival to give away. To enter the draw, please email your name and contact phone number with the subject line ‘REAL FOOD’ to [email protected] by 5pm on Monday, August 26. Winners will be randomly drawn and notif ed by email or phone by 5pm Wednesday, August 28. For full terms and conditions please phone 5444 0152.

But Shelton is also passionate about highlighting the issues around the quality of food and the importance for consumers and retailers to support local food that hasn’t travelled a long way and is in season.

“Too many Australians are eating nutrient-sparse food so we need to get people turned on to fresh, local food,” she says.

This year’s festival will feature a full schedule held across four venues, including an exciting line-up of guest chefs and food experts, demonstrations and discussions.

Highlights include cooking demonstrations and cook-offs. On Saturday, the Food For Thought venue will feature a rabbi, a nun and an Aboriginal woman discussing the relationship between food and spirituality and on Sunday, there will be talks about food and healing and genetically modif ed food.

A variety of workshops will also be held including a food photography workshop with Chris Klaas Photography, Kristie Henning from City Chicks giving advice on how to keep backyard chickens and

Pauline O’Sullivan and Michelle Kasukaitis talking about cooking for those with allergies.

For more information or to view the festival program visit realfoodfestival.com.au.

PLENTY OF HELP FOR RETIREESThe abundance of retirement communities and villages on the Sunshine Coast make this living arrangement an attractive one for retirees of all ages. But many older Australians want to stay in their own homes, in communities they know and love.

So what happens when they need a little help? They don’t have to give up their independence as the government provides plenty of support for older Australians who decide to stay in their homes.

Food and transportNeed help getting out and about or cooking healthy meals? Food services can assist with preparation and cooking in the home, and services such as Meals On Wheels will bring food to you. Transport services are there to help get you to appointments.

Personal care and domestic helpHelp with bathing and getting dressed are available, but if you just need someone to do the housework and shopping, you can also access these types of services.

Most of these services are delivered through the Home and Community Care program. It’s a fairly informal process where you quite often just have to contact the service provider directly. HAPPY DAYS AT HALCYON LANDINGThe paint may have just dried and all the furniture and f nishing touches just put into place but Halcyon Landing’s home owners are already making full use of their new multimillion-dollar recreation club at Bli Bli.

The new rec club is Halcyon’s largest to date and forms a key part of the community’s lifestyle precinct that includes a championship-size bowling green, f ood-lit tennis court, putting green, swimming pool and spa, walking trail and natural parklands. The clubhouse is fully equipped with all sorts of goodies including f ve-star resort facilities like a private cinema, games room, dance f oor, bar, gymnasium and library – all with state of the art technology.

With a vast frontage, the building takes advantage of sweeping views across the bowling green and down to the natural riparian vegetation that lines the Maroochy River.

The completion of the recreation club and precinct coincides with the sell-out of the f rst stage at Halcyon Landing and the near sell-out of the f rst release of stage two in what has become the Sunshine Coast’s fastest-selling over-50s lifestyle community.

Halcyon Landing is part of the $550 million worth of development being pumped into projects in the area, which are providing a boost to the

[ R E T I R E M E N T F E A T U R E ]

local economy. The $6 million redevelopment of the bustling River Markets Shopping Centre is speeding ahead and is set to energise the commercial heart in Bli Bli. The redevelopment will eventually span 3150 square metres of retail and commercial space and include a Supa IGA store, new and larger shops as well as more medical and retail outlets with upgraded parking for 154 vehicles.

Other major projects include the completion of the Sunshine Coast Council’s $3 million upgrade of Muller Park, new residential development Cutters Ridge and the new $40 million Graham Marsh-designed Maroochy River Golf Club, which is currently under construction.

The completion of the rec club coincides with the sell-out of the first stage at Halcyon Landing and the near sell-out of the first release of stage two

PERFORMANCE: 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds; top speed 250km/h.

THIRST 10.5L/100km combined f gure.

VERDICT Plenty of punch inside a velvet glove.

BOTTOM LINE From $75,900, $84,970 drive away.

Superman had Clark Kent. Batman had Bruce Wayne.

And if the Nissan 370Z had an alter ego, this would be it.

Inf niti’s G37 – the sleek, two-door offering by Nissan’s luxury car division – is like a grown-up, toned-down version of the cultish Zed car.

They share the same engine, for a start, and from the outside the family resemblance is unmistakable.

But for every bit as sporty and untamed as the 370Z is, the G37 is as luxurious and ref ned.

Still plenty of fun to drive, mind

WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

you, and certainly no hardship to look at. But it’s as if the 370Z has been given a sensible haircut and been sent to elocution lessons.

Inf niti has made quite a splash since its belated introduction to Australia last year. Built in Japan but primarily for an American audience, the Inf niti brand was sold in more than 40 countries before parent company Nissan f nally unveiled it in Australia.

But they’ve wasted no time since, rolling out an impressive array of models including the excellent FX

line of SUVs and sophisticated M-series luxury sedans we’ve tested in this space previously.

The G37 provides the sporty part of the Inf niti equation, although it arrives here a little further advanced in its model life than the two stable mates with which it shares Inf niti’s opulent dealerships.

That’s not an unusual scenario for start-up brands – German giant Opel has rolled out a couple of models which are midway through their model life – and the G37’s age is apparent in some ways.

[ M O T O R I N G ]

Still, it’s impossible to fault the car’s elegant design and very ref ned ride and performance.

That starts with the very good 3.7-litre V6 it essentially shares with its cultish Nissan cousin, the 370Z.

The engine – also seen in other Nissan models including the Murano SUV – is a ripper, perennially ranked among the world’s best.

Without the angry rumble and sportier tune of the Zed car, the Inf niti’s version nonetheless delivers suff cient punch to make this sleek coupe an invigorating thing to drive.

A beefy 360 Newton metres of torque give it plenty of low-rev shove while the tacho will happily spin up to 7000 revs per minute to unleash all of its 235 kilowatts. That means it will sprint to the speed limit in a brisk 5.9 seconds, which puts it in the thick of the performance coupe category.

A stubby gearshift lever, plus magnesium gearchange paddles on the chunky leather steering wheel give the driver the option of choosing the ratios, although the seven-speed self-shifter does this job more than competently.

Despite its performance credentials the G37 delivers the kind of ref nement we’ve come to expect from Inf niti.

Ride, while f rm enough to inspire conf dence in quick changes of direction, is beautifully compliant and the cabin is kept admirably free of road noise and engine roar.

While the cockpit feels a little less modern than those we admired in the FX and G series models we’ve tested previously, it’s nonetheless a very pleasant place to be.

Heated sports seats are f nished in supple leather and can be variably adjusted in 10 different directions at the push of a button.

The cockpit feels snug and compact, with all switchgear falling easily to hand. The exception is the very comprehensive trip computer, which requires you to fumble for switches on the side of the instrument binnacle to scroll through the information.

Standard interior kit includes dual-zone climate control, power adjustable steering wheel, a classy analogue clock, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, glass sunroof, seven-inch colour touch screen with satellite navigation, a high-end Bose

sound system featuring 10GB music box and 30GB hard-drive as well as Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming. Electric windows and mirrors, of course, are part of the package.

The sound system is particularly enjoyable inside what is a relatively conf ned space, although the Inf niti still manages to accommodate four passengers in relative comfort. Front seats move forward electrically to allow access for those in the two rear buckets.

The G37’s cargo space is a less generous 275 litres – perhaps a drawback for those golfers with a G37 on their shopping list – although the rear seats fold f at to add some extra space for those two-person golf ng excursions.

One bugbear was the foot-operated parking brake – a nod to its primarily American market – but we found few other areas for complaint.

The G37 is complemented by a steel-roofed convertible variant, which sadly we’re yet to drive and which adds about $12,000 to the coupe’s base cost.

Inf niti will offer the coupe and convertible in two trim levels – the coupe starting at $75,900 for the GT Premium, with the S Premium model adding another $7600. The convertible starts at $87,900 up to $97,570.

The extra spend on the S Premium models delivers Inf niti’s 4-Wheel Active Steering system, which the company claims improves agility and handling, Premium buyers also get bigger 19-inch wheels, Viscous Limited Slip Differential, sports suspension and upgraded brakes.

All of which gives this understated coupe a distinctly sportier persona – not a world away from the 370Z. Mr Kent, meet Superman.

TOP MARKS FOR SERVICE

The Ken Mills Toyota dealerships at Nambour and Maroochydore have

been acknowledged by Toyota Australia as Five Star Customer Service Dealerships.

It is the highest ranking for customer service that can be achieved at Toyota and to receive it, the dealerships need to consistently meet Toyota’s targets for customer satisfaction.

[ M O T O R I N G ]

Dealer principal Brett Mills says there is no easy way to achieve the rating without cultivating a customer-centric culture in the business.

“I believe that there’s a strong connection between the satisfaction of our customers and the engagement of our staff and suppliers,” Mills says.

“You will never have satisf ed customers if you don’t have satisf ed staff.”

AFL star Chris Judd’s Hyundai i40 Sedan has gone up for auction on eBay and sports fans, businesses and other interested bidders are being called on for support.

Hyundai, Carlton and Judd are working with eBay to auction the vehicle, with all proceeds to be donated to the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation.

The decision to auction the car follows AFL legend Leigh Matthews’ nomination of Judd as part of the greatest team he has seen in his time in football.

Bidding started at $5555, a nod to Judd’s guernsey number, and Hyundai is calling on fans and supporters to help raise a minimum of $30,000.

The winning bid will receive Judd’s personal Hyundai i40 Sedan with an engraved signature plate on the dash, as well as the guernsey he will wear during the match against Essendon on August 24.

Hyundai will also cover the cost of scheduled services for the f rst

Bid for kids

two years and provide a $2000 gift certif cate to spend on genuine Hyundai accessories.

Participating bidders will need to register as an off cial entrant prior to placing bids.

Bidding for the car opened on eBay on Wednesday night. The auction will f nish live on screen during half-time at the Carlton versus Essendon game at the MCG on August 24.

The Steven Walters Children’s Cancer Foundation aims to fund childhood cancer research in order to create a 100 per cent survival rate.

Queensland motorists are set to benef t from the RACQ’s new online weapon to combat rising fuel prices.

Club spokesperson Joe Fitzgerald says RACQ has developed the Fair Fuel Price service to inform motorists about how much they should be paying at bowsers, rather than what retailers are charging.

“RACQ’s Fair Fuel Price provides a reasonable price for motorists to help them decide when and where to f ll up,” Fitzgerald says.

The service, which calculates a fair price for each locality based on international oil price, wholesale fuel price, reasonable costs and margins and the price cycle is available throughout south-east Queensland. The Fair Fuel Prices service is displayed in a box on the home page at racq.com.au.

With four off ces on the Sunshine Coast, local residents are used to

seeing RE/MAX signs on homes for sale in the region. RE/MAX has more than 60 off ces in Australia and also boasts an international presence, with listings in around 90 countries.

The newest Sunshine Coast-based off ce, RE/MAX Hinterland, opened in Maleny last month, but the town has another connection to the real estate brand – Michael Davoren, managing director and an owner of RE/MAX Australia, is also a proud Maleny resident.

Davoren and his wife Margaret moved to Maleny from Brisbane about eight years ago, when he was working full-time for LJ Hooker.

“[We] saw retirement down the track and thought Maleny was the place we most wanted to be,” Davoren says. “We felt it best to move in while we were still active and could develop a circle of interest.”

He says they chose Maleny because of its ambience, good commercial facilities and proximity to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast (and their respective airports).

Home on the rangeTHERE MIGHT BE A NEW RE/MAX OFFICE IN MALENY, BUT RE/MAX AUSTRALIA MANAGING

DIRECTOR MICHAEL DAVOREN HAS ALSO CALLED THE HINTERLAND TOWN HOME FOR YEARS.

COVER STORY

“It gave the lifestyle we wanted immediately, plus what we wanted when we retired,” Davoren says.

“Soon after we moved to Maleny I made a career change with my real estate consultancy, RE Concepts International, which was very successful and home-based.

“On the range, all the facilities are available for people to work that way and many local businesses have national and international reach.”

Davoren was f rst approached by RE/MAX Australia about taking over the role of managing director early in August 2011.

“Initially I wasn’t interested but fully explored the offer,” he says. “I had questions from the start around wanting equity in the company and received a ‘not yet’ response.”

He took over as managing director three months later, and a few months after that the RE/MAX international headquarters, based in Denver, Colorado, approached him about ownership. The deal was f nalised on December 1, 2012.

MWP spoke to Davoren about the challenges and opportunities of running a national company from the range.

How do you balance life in Maleny and your RE/MAX responsibilities?“There is an enormous amount of travel – intrastate, interstate, New Zealand and internationally – so it’s not just about the Brisbane/Maleny balance. I do have dual residency – Maleny and Kangaroo Point. While I take my hat off to the thousands of people who travel the highway every day between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, I just cannot manage that in my work schedule.

“But I wouldn’t contemplate moving back to the city [full time] – coming home to Maleny, whether for the weekend or even just a night, immediately takes the pressure down.”

Describe a typical week or fortnight.“Really there is no typical week or fortnight, but I could say I leave Maleny at 6am on a Monday morning and start meetings in Brisbane at 8am. In one week on average a month I’ll be in New Zealand and in the other weeks of the month I’ll be out of Brisbane but somewhere in Australia. An average day is probably 10 hours.

AN IRRESISTIBLE OPPORTUNITY

NEWS & VIEWS

“And it’s not a Monday to Friday job, I can assure you. My son Joel had his engagement party at our Maleny home recently and I spent part of the time locked away on a live radio interview.”

Can you sum up the Maleny real estate market – when you fi rst bought, compared with how you see it in the future?“We’ve now owned four different properties and lived in two of them. In the eight years we saw capital growth in the f rst couple of years then the GFC had its impact in Maleny, especially at the upper end of the market, but we are looking at solid beginnings of a price recovery now.”

How much are markets like Maleny important to your vision for RE/MAX?“It is critical that we have a reach to all markets, both city and regional. Matters like investment, lifestyle and retirement are touch points in all markets. A place like Maleny, for example, attracts investment from west to east as well as south to north, with a lot of retirees from country areas. RE/MAX Australia is particularly looking at opportunities to span the country-regional-metropolitan markets through alliances, such as the recently announced RE/MAX AIRR, a partnership with Australia’s fastest growing rural network, Australian Independent Rural Retailers Pty Ltd.”

When sales agent David Belsham was given the mission of selling 67 townhouses at a new development in Brightwater, he didn’t predict he would soon become the owner of one.

Belsham is the sales agent at Aspect North, a $40 million boutique townhouse development by AR Developers located a few kilometres from the new Kawana hospital precinct. He says the announcement of the $3 billion plus project means the opportunity to secure a property at the estate is too good to miss.

“Frankly, the purchase was a no-brainer after they released full details of the Kawana infrastructure project,” Belsham says.

“People are starting to sit up and notice all the potential presented by the boom in infrastructure.

“You can’t f nd a better deal in terms of job growth and people want to buy in areas that not only display economic growth but can also deliver the kind of world-class lifestyle that’s on offer on the Sunshine Coast.”

Aspect North’s large three- and four-bedroom properties feature quality f nishes, including stone benchtops and ducted air-conditioning throughout. The elevated site is adjacent to parkland and has uninterrupted views of the Mooloolaba skyline and ocean. Prices start at $385,000 for three bedrooms and $445,000 for four.

AR Developments says it is conf dent the remaining townhouses will be sold by December. Smart buying: boutique townhouses near the health hub

ACROSS DOWN

HOROSCOPESARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Fools rush in where angels fear to tread! That’s you this weekend, as you rush in and mess up a sensitive situation. More patience is needed, if you want to help rather than hinder.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 With Venus visiting your wellbeing zone until September 11, focus on your health and fitness. But it will only work if you choose an eating plan and an exercise that you enjoy.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Joint finances are on your mind, so it’s time to check the household budget. Don’t have one? Now’s the time to start! The weekend stars favour fun activities with family and friends.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Expect the unexpected as a loved one or colleague behaves in a way that unsettles you. Don’t jump to conclusions – there’s more to the matter than meets the eye.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Superficial chit-chat won’t be appreciated this weekend. Don’t skim over the surface, it’s time to dig deeper. Loved ones are looking for a little more care and a lot more sympathy.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 You are running around multitasking all over the place, but are you actually getting anything done? When it comes to money matters, you can look forward to a surprise.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Venus vamps into your sign today, where it stays until September 11. So flutter your eyelashes or flex your pecs, as you charm others and get what you want in the nicest possible way!

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Strong feelings may surface this weekend, as others push your buttons and you overreact. Cool down Scorpio, otherwise you run the risk of turning a minor matter into an obsession.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Can you be discreet? You’ve been told something in strict confidence, but can a loud-mouth archer turn into a secretive Sagittarian? This weekend, anything is possible.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Changes are brewing on the home front, which could lead to more personal freedom. You’re feeling restless but make sure you finish tasks before you launch something new.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 You’re keen to accomplish a lot over the next two days, but don’t take on more than you can comfortably handle. Leave plenty of time in your Aquarian weekend for travel.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 The weekend stars highlight your imagination, and your restless side. Creative projects will calm your Piscean restlessness – as will outdoor activities and communing with nature.

4-DAY FORECAST

FISHING REPORTwith Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

Spring cleaning is the order this weekend. Clean the boards and be ready for the next swell as you won’t be surf ng this weekend, with crapola being the prediction! It is the perfect weekend for Tough Mudder! Or get the brownie points locked in with the family. Surf cams or not surf cams? I’m not a fan but they seem to get people f red up. My view is do the work, get up early and score waves for yourself, discover new banks, watch conditions and be rewarded for your efforts. Cams just bring in the lazy surfer, but the f ipside is they are good for tourism. Whatever your view remember, share and don’t be greedy. Just because you might be a good surfer does not give you have the right to paddle inside and snake an older guy – the poor bloke does not even know how you did it. Ha!

ESTUARY: Good-sized tailor are taking pillies and shiny, chrome weighted lures in the deeper channels from Maroochy Bar to the Motorway Bridge. Quality bream are on the outgoing tide from Cotton Tree to Pincushion using fowl gut and prawns. Luderick will be hanging around in their usual haunts. SURF: Quality tailor from Maroochy Beach to the bar will be on the night tides using pilchards, with bream also being taken on the high tide at most coastal beaches. Flathead and shovel-nosed sharks are along Maroochy North Shore to Mudjimba. OFFSHORE: The Gneerings and Murphy’s are providing quality mixed reef f sh at dawn and dusk using squid and pillies. The Barwon Banks are f ring for snapper, pearl perch and amberjack, with a few morwong just for variety. Watch out for the whales. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is having a great run of small winter bass and spangled perch with locals having a ball using shrimp and spinner baits. During these winter months jig lures and spinner baits are about the only thing f sh will take other than baits.
