About This ManualThis document describes the procedures for installing, using, and maintaining the CETAC MVX-7100 µL workstation, which comprises the main XYZ autosampler unit, the CETAC SPM-700+ syringe pump module, and the CETAC VSM-700 valve syringe module. This document also provides information regarding the design of the workstation and the troubleshooting of minor problems.

Who Should Read This Manual?The primary audience for this manual consists of analytical chemists and laboratory technicians. To use this manual effectively, you should have a basic knowledge of chemistry, a basic knowledge of electronic sampling equipment, at least a beginning level of computer experience, and a working knowledge of the analytical instrumentation used with this workstation (typically, but not exclusively, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrumentation).

CHEMICAL INJURY HAZARDThe workstation is intended for use only by qualified operators who have been trained in safe laboratory practices. Workstation

Overview

What does the MVX-7100 µL workstation do?The Teledyne CETAC Technologies MVX-7100 µL workstation provides sample handling (sample preparation and sample introduction capability) for sample volumes down to 5 µL for ICP-MS instrumentation. The syringe-driven sample introduction and subsequent rinse cycles allows for stable low-flow applications with low detection limits. Syringe aliquot control combined with flow injection allows for accurate sample volumes to be handled and superior washout. The MVX-7100 µL workstation utilizes a non-metallic liquid-facing flow path to minimize system background and provide low detection limits.

How does the MVX-7100 µL workstation work?By the action of onboard syringe pumps, the MVX-7100 µL workstation uses a quartz septum piercing needle to aspirate and dispense samples and associated media for the purpose of both preparing samples, calibration standards and other solutions in vials, tubes or well plate wells and introducing solutions to ICP-MS instrumentation via a sample loop and switching valve arrangement for analytical measurement. Sample aliquots and dilution/preparation media volumes are accurately controlled by a software operated syringe pump. For sample introduction, sample aliquots are incorporated into a liquid flow path that is continually moving to ICP-MS sample introduction apparatus (typically a nebulizer and spray chamber arrangement).

How is the MVX-7100 µL workstation controlled?The MVX-7100 µL workstation is connected to an ICP-MS host computer via a serial or USB cable. The “CETAC Workstation” software is installed on the host computer and all workstation commands are handled by this software. For the purpose of analysis, an ICP-MS instrument is typically triggered to act at specified times (be it measure or delay) by the workstation to ensure synchronization between the MVX-7100 automation and the analytical instrument hardware. Triggering may also be set up in the opposite direction, that is, the MVX-7100 µL workstation can receive a trigger signal from an ICP-MS instrument to initiate a specific action.

Workstation Components

The following components are located at the front of the workstation:

Arm. The XYZ Autosampler arm moves the sample needle horizontally.

Power Indicator Lamp. This LED indicates that the XYZ Autosampler component of the workstation is connected to the power supply and that power is being delivered.

Reagent Vial Rack and Reagent Vials. This rack holds six 20 mL capacity reagent vials and is adjustable in height with respect to the sample needle.

Rinse Station. The dual rinse station is located at the left side of the reagent vials positions at the back of the sample base. Either, or both, positions of the dual rinse station may be used during operation.

Sample Rack Base. The sample rack base holds sample racks, 96 well plates and 384 well plates in place for analysis.

Sample Vials. 1.5 mL capacity sample vials may be used with the MVX-7100 system as well as micro centrifuge tubes.

Sample Vial Racks. These racks hold sample vials or tubes. The number and type of vials or tubes depends on the application in question and on the configuration of the Automation that is required.

Sample Well Plates. 96 and 384 position well plates may be used to contain samples for analysis instead of sample vials or tubes.

Syringe Pump Module (SPM). The syringe pump module delivers a liquid carrier or reagent flow (with or without a sample incorporated) to an ICP-MS as part of the sample introduction process. One or more (up to 15) CETAC SPM-700+ syringe pump modules can be connected to the MVX-7100 µL Workstation as required by specific applications.

Valve Syringe Module (VSM). The valve syringe module controls aspiration and dispensation of solutions between vials, tubes or well plate wells as part of sample preparation and controls aspiration of a sample for positioning onto a sample loop prior to introduction to an ICP-MS.

Z-Drive Assembly. The Z-Drive assembly moves the sample needle vertically. The assembly includes a Z-Axis motor assembly as well as the sample needle. The Z-Drive motor assembly attaches onto the Autosampler arm.

The following components are located at the rear of the workstation:

Accessory Mounts. These blocks attach to the XYZ Autosampler and provide a base for either an SPM or VSM module.

Auxiliary Port. This optional input/output connector allows single direction or bidirectional triggering between the MVX-7100 system and other instrumentation.

Ethernet Port. The Ethernet port can be used to interface the XYZ Autosampler with the ICP-MS host computer. This port and the associated LEDs are disabled by default.

Peristaltic Pump. This peristaltic pump drives the movement of rinse agent to the dual rinse station positioned on the front of the MVX-7100 system as well as the removal of rinse agent via the drain port.

Power Supply. This power supply box provides power to the individual XYZ Autosampler, VSM and SPM components of the MVX-7100 µL Workstation. Use a four-port power supply for the XYZ autosampler and up to three accessory modules (such as the VPM, one SPM and the PRM). An eight-channel power supply is available for applications which require two or more SPM modules.

Power Supply Power and Communications Cable. These cables connect the Power Supply to the XYZ Autosampler, VSM and SPM components of the MVX-7100 and allow power provision and communications between them.

RS-232 Serial I/O Ports (COM1 and COM2). The COM1 RS232 Serial port can be used to interface is the XYZ Autosampler with the ICP-MS host computer. The COM2 RS232 Serial port connects the XYZ Autosampler to the power supply.

SPM Power Switch. This switch turns the power to the syringe pump module on and off.

USB Port. This USB port can be used to interface the XYZ Autosampler with the ICP-MS host computer.

VSM Power Switch. This switch turns the power to the valve syringe module on and off.

XYZ Autosampler Power Switch. This switch turns the power to the XYZ Autosampler component on and off.

Z-Drive Connector. The Z-drive contains an integral motor and lead screw, and is powered and controlled through this connector on the back of the XYZ Autosampler.

Supplied components depend on the application and the exact version of the workstation. See the packing list in the shipping container to see exactly which components are supplied.

Additional Equipment Required A Host PC. This computer controls the MVX-7100 µL workstation. This

could be the same computer that is used to operate the associated ICP-MS instrumentation. This computer must have a free USB port or RS232 serial port. Such a host PC is not supplied by Teledyne CETAC Technologies with the MVX-7100 µL workstation.

Sample Introduction Nebulizer and Spray Chamber Apparatus. A delivery line can be connected between the “sample out” port of the six-port switching valve of the VPM module and most types of nebulizer for introduction of sample via a spray chamber to an ICP-MS instrument. The

flow rate of sample being pushed by the SPM module syringe is dictated by the MVX-7100 operating software and is matched to the flow rate of the nebulizer in use (such as 50 µL min-1, 100 µL min-1, 200 µL min-1, r 400 µL min-1). This makes most nebulizers compatible with the MVX-7100 µL workstation.

Optional AccessoriesDepending on the application, you may also wish to purchase the following items. See the MVX-7100 Accessories and Parts Catalog, available on www.cetac.com, for part numbers:

CETAC SPM-700+ Syringe Pump Module. One or more CETAC SPM-700+ syringe pump modules can be incorporated to the MVX-7100 µL Workstation for applications where additional reagent flows are required to be delivered to an ICP-MS instrument.

CETAC Peltier Rack Module (PRM). The PRM module, as shown in Figure 1-3, is a temperature controlled sample rack base that can hold up to two sample racks and well plates at fixed temperatures between 4˚ C and 40˚ C. This accessory is provided with its own manual.

Rack and Well Plate Options. A number of sample tube/vial racks and well plates are compatible with the MVX-7100 µL workstation:

o VT54. These sample vial racks are compatible with ‘HPLC style’ vials of 1.5 mL capacity.

o SR48. These sample tube racks are compatible with micro centrifuge tubes.

o 96 Well Plates. The MVX-7100 is compatible with most standard 96 well plates of varying well capacity and up to 44 mm in height. Teledyne CETAC Technologies can provide 96 well plates.

o 384 Well Plates. The MVX-7100 is compatible with most standard 384 well plates of varying well capacity. Teledyne CETAC Technologies can provide 384 well plates.

Pierceable Films. Pierceable films can be used to provide a top layer seal over a 96 or 384 well plate to inhibit evaporation of samples.

Nebulizers. The MVX-7100 system is compatible with most nebulizer types for ICP-MS sample introduction. Teledyne CETAC Technologies can provide the following nebulizers that can be used to address most analytical applications for the MVX-7100 µL Workstation:

o C-Flow Nebulizer Range. C-Flow nebulizers are available in 50 µL min-1, 100 µL min-1 and 200 µL min-1 flow rates.

o DS-5 Microflow Concentric Nebulizer. The DS-5 can be used in conjunction with the MVX-7100 system for the introduction of samples in the 3 to 10 µL min-1 flow rate range.

NOTE:

Contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies if you need additional accessories not listed, need added features to integrate the workstation into your analytical system, or have unique requirements. Research and development of new features and accessories for the workstation, often inspired by customer requests, is a continuing activity at Teledyne CETAC Technologies.

Intended UseThe MVX-7100 µL Workstation is designed for use as an automation system in analytical laboratories performing chemical analysis of samples, most notably for use in conjunction with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrumentation for trace element measurement. The MVX-7100 system primarily provides sample introduction capability for ‘sub-optimal’ sample volumes (within the range of 5 µL to 1.5 mL) to ICP-MS instrumentation and it may also be employed as a sample/standard preparation workstation both offline and online, when using the CETAC Workstation operating software, for some aqueous based matrix types.

Chemical Compatibility

Non-Wetted ComponentsWorkstation components are made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel alloys or anodized aluminum. The enclosure and base are made from a high-strength aluminum alloy that is treated with a RoHS-compliant chemfilm and finished with an epoxy powder coating.

Long-term exposure to aqueous acids greater than 15% may cause discoloration or bubbling of the epoxy coating.

The enclosure is not sealed against liquid or vapor intrusion. Long-term exposure of the internal components to corrosive materials may cause damage.

Wetted ComponentsThe workstation operates reliably under a wide variety of conditions. Wetted components are made of Polyetherimide (PEI) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). When these inert, non-metallic materials are used at temperatures less than 135°C, they can withstand repeated exposure to the following substances:

Predominantly aqueous solutions of strong acids (less than 20%)

Predominantly aqueous solutions of strong bases (less than 10%)

Common organic solvents such as acetone, alcohols, ethyl acetate, Methylethylketone (MEK), petroleum oils and derived fuels, tetrachloroethylene, toluene, kerosene and xylene.

DAMAGE FROM CHEMICAL EXPOSUREProlonged or repeated exposure to temperatures greater than 135°C and to the following substances can cause failure of the flow path components:• Solutions of concentrated acids (greater than 40%).• Solutions of concentrated bases (greater than 10% potassium, ammonium, or sodium hydroxides).• Partially halogenated hydrocarbons or extremely aggressive organic solvents (chloroform, methylene dichloride, 1,1,2-trichloroethane).

CHEMICAL HAZARDDo not use the workstation with substances which could pose a hazard of serious injury to the operator if spilled or injected, such as formic acid.

2 Preparing for Installation

Installing the MVX-7100 µL workstation requires preparation. Before you install the workstation, you should evaluate the physical arrangement of the laboratory to choose a suitable location. You should also understand the configuration of the analytical instrumentation to which the workstation will be connected so that the syringe and valve pump modules can be positioned correctly for optimum sample introduction. Once you choose a location, you must carefully unpack the workstation prior to beginning the installation.

Choosing a ConfigurationThere are many possible configurations for the workstation. Prior to operating the workstation you will have made decisions regarding the following:

Whether the rinse station will use a single or dual rinse configuration. The kind of sample needle that will be installed. The type of sample racks that are required. Whether a temperature-controlled rack (PRM) will be used. Which type of triggering interface will be used between the workstation

and the ICP-MS.

Before you begin installation, review your plan for the system configuration and make sure you know how you want the sample and solvent solutions to flow through the system.

Choosing a Location for InstallationChoosing a location for the MVX-7100 µL workstation involves evaluating the laboratory environment for the availability of space, liquid waste routing and power. For the system to function optimally, the location you select must meet specific requirements associated with each of these items. The following sections discuss space, water, and power requirements.

Proximity to the ICP-MS InstrumentationFor the introduction of sample volumes to analytical instrumentation such as ICP-MS, whereby flow rates of greater than 50 µL min-1 will be employed, the length of connecting sample tubing between the Valve Syringe Module (VSM) and a nebulizer is less critical. However, when introducing very small sample volumes via flow rates of less than 50 µL min-1 then it is very important to minimize the length of the connecting sample tubing to ensure that, firstly, the introduction time is not excessive and, secondly, that the volume of carrier solution required to push the sample from a sample loop to the nebulizer does not exceed the capacity of the syringe in place on the Syringe Pump Module (SPM).

To ensure easy positioning of the workstation and that the connecting sample tubing is not too long, the accessory modules (SPM and VPM) can be mounted on either side of the workstation and also both on the same side. You must decide on a workstation configuration that works best for your laboratory and applications.

Two typical MVX-7100 µL workstation configurations are shown in FIGURE 2-1 and FIGURE 2-2 in relation to different ICP-MS instruments:

Space RequirementsThe recommended footprint for the workstation with two accessory modules (VSM and SPM) is shown in the following table. Space requirements for specific workstations may be different, depending on the configuration and accessories.

You will need easy access to the back of the workstation to reach the power switches. As a minimum, allow at least 5 cm behind the workstation for cable egress, ventilation, and access to the power switches. Always position the equipment so that it is easy to disconnect the power cord.

Work Surface RequirementsThe workstation must be placed on a sturdy countertop or table. Due to its weight, do not place the workstation on a folding table. During operation, the workstation produces both vertical and horizontal forces. If the work surface is allowed to shake or wobble, the workstation may “walk” across the surface, liquids may spill, or data quality may be affected.

Rinse Solution/Liquid Waste RequirementsFor most applications, deionized water, a low concentration acid solution (such as HNO3, 1%) or kerosene would be used as a rinse agent and as a carrier

solution/rinse agent for sample delivery to a nebulizer under syringe pump action.

Place all solution bottles (rinse and carrier/rinse agents) that service the MVX-7100 system within two meters of the workstation.

Ensure that there is a liquid waste receptacle within two meters of the workstation. The waste receptacle inlet should be at least 30 to 60 centimeters lower than the XYZ autosampler rinse station outlet and set up so that the rinse drain tubing drops directly into the waste receptacle with no coiling and without being submerged below the liquid level of the waste receptacle.

SUBMERGED DRAIN TUBING MAY CAUSE EQUIPMENT DAMAGE Ensure that the rinse drain tubing is not submerged in the waste liquid. If the tubing is submerged, waste liquid can back up into the tubing.

Power RequirementsThe workstation receives power through the connection to the external desktop power supply. Place the workstation within 1.2 meters of a power outlet.

SHOCK AND FIRE HAZARDUse only the provided power supply. The power supply must be plugged into an outlet which has a protective ground connection.

The workstation is intended to operate from DC power supplied through the provided power supply. The power supply is provided power through an AC power source that will not apply more than 240VAC between the supply conductors and ground. A protective ground connection by way of the grounding connector in the power cord is required for safe operation.

Ensure that you position the workstation so that the location where the power supply cord plugs into it is easily accessible (is not blocked) and it can be quickly disconnected if needed. In case of hazard, the workstation should be disconnected from the power source.

The power supply socket is on the back of the XYZ autosampler below the power switch. Connect the power supply to the autosampler first and then connect a line cord to the power supply. Do not apply power to the power supply until ready to operate the autosampler.

Unpacking the MVX-7100 µL Workstation

LIFTING HAZARDTwo people are required to lift the workstation. Lifting should be done with a person situated on either side of the instrument. Lifting without assistance may cause injury.

Inspect external packaging upon receipt for signs of shipping damage. Inspect all items during unpacking and notify the carrier immediately of any concealed damage. Check for any kinked or bent tubing.

If the system is shipped or removed from storage during cold weather, allow the packaged equipment to equilibrate to room temperature before opening and exposing to warm, humid air. It is usually sufficient to provide four to eight hours for this purpose.

EQUIPMENT DAMAGE FROM CONDENSATIONIf condensation forms on or inside the workstation, allow it to dry thoroughly before connecting it to a power source and operating it. Failure to do so may cause equipment damage.

Remove the packing checklist from the shipping container, and check off items against it. Leave accessories in the packing until you are ready to install them.

NOTE

Keep the factory packaging for use in case the product ever needs to be returned or shipped to another location.

3 Installing the Workstation

If installation services have been purchased, initial installation will be performed by a Teledyne CETAC Technologies-authorized engineer. Installation services include assembly of the system hardware, electrical and liquid flow connection, establishing system communications, sample needle/probe alignment, operating software configuration and operator training.

Do not use the workstation until the autosampler has been aligned by a CETAC-authorized engineer. If the autosampler is not aligned, the sample needle may be damaged.

This chapter provides an overview of how to assemble the system and make the power, data, and liquid flow connections.

Tools Required for InstallationYou will need the following tools:

Installing the SoftwareDepending on your system configuration, there are several options for software to control the MVX-7100 µL workstation. You will need to use the software during the hardware installation process to test communications and to position the syringe pumps. Install the software on your ICP-MS host PC.

Installing the CETAC Workstation SoftwareThe CETAC Workstation software is independent of the ICP-MS and can be used to control the CETAC MVX-7100 workstation along with its syringe pumps, the 6-port valve, and optional Peltier rack module. Scripts can coordinate timing with the ICP-MS, allowing you to analyze large numbers of samples unattended.

The installer is supplied on the included CD or may be supplied by your Teledyne CETAC representative.

1 Run the installer from the MVX-7100 software CD.

Installing the Agilent MassHunter™ Workstation SoftwareIf you will be using the Agilent MassHunter™ Workstation software with the CETAC MVX-7100, you will need to install and configure a plug-in. You do not need to also install the CETAC Workstation software.

For information on installing the plug-in, see the CETAC MVX-7100 Plugin For Agilent MassHunter User’s Guide on the CD. For information on using the plug-in, start MassHunter and click the help button in the plug-in.

Installing the Accessory Module Mounting BlocksMost installations include one valve syringe module and one syringe pump module. Some installations include one or more syringe pump modules.

The accessory modules can be mounted on either side of the XYZ autosampler. Decide on an arrangement which will allow you to place the valve syringe module as close as possible to the ICP-MS nebulizer. See page 18 for example arrangements.

Each accessory module sits atop an accessory mounting block, and the mounting block can be installed on either side of the autosampler. There are two types of mounting blocks. An inside mounting block is designed to attach directly to the XYZ autosampler. An outside mounting block is designed to attach to an inside mounting block.

You will need a Philips head screwdriver and a set of Allen (hex) wrenches.

1 Turn the power switches on the power supply, XYZ autosampler, and accessory modules (VSM and SPM) OFF.

2 Place an inside mounting block next to the XYZ autosampler on the side where you want it.

3 Check that the black pin is in the position toward the front of the autosampler. If necessary, turn the block over and move the pin to the other hole.

5 Install another inside mounting block on the opposite side of the XYZ autosampler.

6 If more than one module is needed on one side of the MVX-7100 µL workstation, then an outside mounting block needs to be fitted to accommodate that module. The outside mounting block can be fitted by positioning the white mounting pins on the side of the block (as shown in FIGURE 3-1) into the spaces in the side of the inside mounting block (as can be seen in FIGURE 3-4) and pushing the outside mounting block down until it is flush with the inside mounting block.

Mounting the SPM and VPM Accessory Modules1 Place the syringe pump on the mounting block. The black pins on the block fit

into the hole on the underside of the module.

2 Push the module back until the front is flush with the front of the XYZ autosampler.

NOTE

To remove a pump from its mounting block, slide it forward as far as it will go, then slide it back about 1 mm before lifting it.

Connecting the Power SupplyIt is important to use the appropriate power cord for your country. See

“Power requirements” on page 84.

“Power Cord Set Requirements” on page 87.

FIRE AND SHOCK HAZARDUse only the provided power supply.

1 Turn the power switches on the power supply, XYZ autosampler, and accessory modules OFF.

2 Slide the power supply underneath the back of the XYZ autosampler.

Push it back until it touches the sample tray. The power supply rests on the tabletop, and is not mechanically attached to the XYZ autosampler.

3 Connect the XYZ autosampler power cable (supplied with the XYZ autosampler) to one of the 24V connectors on the back of the power supply.

4 Plug the power supply into the 24V connector on the XYZ autosampler.

5 Locate the power/data cables for the accessory modules.

Connecting the MVX-7100 µL Workstation to the Host PCSoftware on the host PC controls both the ICP-MS instrument and the MVX-7100 µL workstation. You cannot operate the workstation until you establish a communications interface between the workstation and the host PC. It is through this interface that the host computer directs the operation of the workstation. The workstation supports the following communications protocols:

The USB interface is the standard configuration. A virtual COM port is created so that the connection looks like a standard RS-232 serial port to the host PC software.

The serial (RS-232) interface is simple and reliable, but the host computer may lack a free serial port.

Use either a serial cable or a USB cable (not both).

Connecting a USB CableYou will need an “A-B” USB cable.

The computer screen should display a "New Hardware Found" window. A USB driver must be installed to make the USB port emulate an RS-232 COM port, and the installation must be repeated for each USB connection.

In most cases, the driver will be found online and installed automatically. This process may take several minutes.

If the driver is not installed automatically, insert the CD-ROM and allow the wizard to search the CD-ROM and install the driver (the exact procedure depends on the version of the Windows operating system). For Microsoft Windows 7, you may need to navigate to the “FTDI Driver” folder on the CD-ROM to find the driver file named “ftdiport.inf”. The hardware will be identified as an “FT 232R USB UART” and then as a “USB Serial Converter.”

5 When driver installation is complete, make a note of which COM port number was assigned. The COM port number may be displayed in a “bubble” in the lower right corner of the screen.

6 Confirm that the COM port selected for the USB matches the port selected in the host computer's instrument control software.

Connecting a Serial CableUse either a serial cable or a USB cable (not both).

You will need a serial cable equipped with two male DB-9 connectors.

1 Plug one end of the cable into the host computer’s serial (COM) port.

If the computer has more than one serial port, make sure to use the same port which is selected in the instrument control software.

2 Finger-tighten both screws of the connector.

3 Connect the other end of the cable to the autosampler’s COM1 port.

4 Finger-tighten both screws of the connector.

NOTES

If a host computer serial port with a DB-9F, a DB-25M, or a DB-25F connector (9 pin D-subminiature receptacle or 25 pin D-subminiature plug or receptacle) must be used, use an adapter to convert the serial port to a DB-9M. Do not use a “null modem” adapter.

Ensure you are connecting the serial cable to the COM1 port. Connecting the adapter to the COM2 port on the XYZ autosampler will cause a malfunction.

When interconnecting any computing devices, keep the communications cables away from sources of electromagnetic or radio frequency (RF) interference, such as electric motors, transformers, fluorescent light ballasts, or RF energy sources. Limit cable runs for RS-232C to less than 16 meters. If these conditions cannot be satisfied, use low-impedance, fully shielded cables to provide satisfactory operation. The cables are available from many sources, but you will need to specify the correct mating connectors and “straight-through” (DTE-DCE) wiring.

Installing the VSM and SPM SyringesThe supplied syringes need to be installed on the VSM and SPM modules. The procedure is the same for both modules.

The syringe should be tightened with just your fingers; using pliers or other tools could damage the syringe.

1 Open the MVX-7100 µL workstation software and initialize communication.

2 Use the manual controls to move the barrel of the syringe to 1/2.

If you are using the CETAC Workstation software, on the Manual Controls tab, select the address of the syringe pump. The half-height syringe on the valve syringe module is always at address 16; the other syringes are numbered 1 through 15.Click Barrel to 1/2.

3 Screw the syringe onto the valve. Tighten the syringe into place with your fingers. Do not use any kind of wrench or other tool to do this.

4 Attach the plunger of the syringe to the syringe locking nut on the module mounting fitting. Ensure that the plunger is properly engaged into the locking nut. Tighten the nut using your fingers. Do not use any kind of wrench or other tool for this purpose.

5 Once the syringe has been successfully attached to the module, return to the software and initialize that particular pump to push the syringe plunger to its starting position.

Installing and Aligning a Sample Needle

NOTICEUse only the manufacturer-recommended sample needle, which has a length of 3 inches. Using a short or broken sample needle may result in the needle holder crashing into the top of the rinse station.

7 Push the sample needle (complete with the PEEK nut and compression ferrule) up into the sample needle holder (as shown in FIGURE 3-15).

8 Tighten the PEEK nut on the sample needle with your fingers to temporarily hold the needle in place in the needle assembly.

9 Hold the needle holder in place with the 7/16” wrench and use the 1/4” wrench to tighten the PEEK nut on the sample needle by ¼ turn (as shown in FIGURE 3-19). DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN—you can always return and tighten the nut further if that is required.

10 Carefully replace the guide plate. Align the needle in the guide plate and gently push the guide plate straight up. Install the two screws to hold the guide plate in place.

Adjusting the Sample Needle Height

1 When the sample needle has been fitted into place, ensure that it is positioned at the correct height. The top of the sample needle should be approximately flush with the top nut on the bulkhead (as shown inFIGURE 3-20) whilst the bottom of the needle should not exceed beyond 2 mm below the guide plate (as shown in FIGURE 3-21) and preferably not more than 1 mm.

If you are using sample needles that have a greater than standard length then you will need to adjust the thumbscrews on the needle assembly to lower the height of the guide plate and the range of motion of the sample needle. If you need to adjust the height of the guide plate you should also check the height of the standards, calibrate the Z-height using the software and verify that there is adequate clearance for the needle above all components in the sample area.

Testing the New Needle

1 Make sure the Z drive clear of any obstructions.

2 Power up the MVX-7100 µL workstation (the arm and needle assembly will return to the HOME position).

3 Manually operate the short syringe on the VSM module to push some rinse solution through the sample needle. Visually check the sample needle connections (particularly between the PEEK nut and the needle holder and at the bottom of the PEEK nut) for leaks when you are pushing rinse solution through it. Tighten the PEEK nut as previously described.

4 Reinstall the clear shield with the three screws.

Aligning the Sample NeedleThe autosampler must be aligned before it is used for the first time.

Initial alignment is performed on-site by a CETAC-authorized engineer.

Following the installation of a sample needle or a major event such as the uninstallation of the MVX-7100 µL Workstation and movement from one laboratory bench to another or one laboratory to another it is strongly recommended that the sample needle position be aligned so to ensure that the needle moves to the desired position and does not engage with the side of the rinse station or a sample tube and be damaged.

An alignment utility is provided on the CD. The alignment procedure is continually being improved; contact CETAC to make sure you get the latest alignment software and procedure.

Installing Fittings on the TubingSome of the plumbing tubing for the MVX-7100 µL workstation, such sample loops, comes with fittings (nuts and ferrules) already installed. For other tubing, such as the line between the SPM module and an ICP-MS nebulizer,

fittings will need to be installed before they can be connected to corresponding ports such as those on the six port switching valve.

There are three different types of tubing fitting that are associated with the MVX-7100 µL workstation and each are attached differently. If you need to fit or replace any of these fittings, the description of their installation is as follows.

All fittings should be tightened to finger tight only and not with wrenches or similar tools.

It is important to trim the tubing so that it does not extend very far past the ferrule; excess tubing can block liquid flow or even interfere with the movement of the valve.

1 Pass the tubing through the nut.

2 Place the ferrule on the end of the tubing.

3 Very gently screw the nut with the ferrule and tubing in place part way into the corresponding port.

4 Push the tubing all of the through the nut to the furthest most point of the corresponding port.

5 Tighten the nut with your fingers.

6 Unscrew the nut and remove the tubing with nut and ferrule attached.

7 Trim off any tubing which extends beyond the the end of the ferrule.

Connecting Tubing to the VSM and SPMThe plumbing connections depend on the application of the MVX-7100 µL workstation and on its particular setup/configuration. This section describes the most common setup with one VSM module and one SPM module.

In order to start connecting the tubing to the VSM and SPM, please familiarize yourself with the components of the six-port switching valve and the T-shaped switching valve (or Y-shaped switching valve) that is connected to the syringe of the VSM as shown in FIGURE 3-23 and the T-shaped switching valve (or Y-

1 Connect the sample loop between Port 3 and Port 6 of the six port switching valve.

2 Connect the sample line from the sample needle top bulkhead nut to Port 1 of the six-port switching valve.

3 Connect the buffer volume line (a 1.25 mL capacity loop line) between the output (left hand side as the user looks at the valve) of the half height syringe switching valve on the VSM to Port 2 of the six port switching valve.

4 Connect the carrier solution line between the output (left hand side as the user looks at the valve) of the full height syringe switching valve on the SPM to Port 4 on the six port switching valve.

5 Connect a line between Port 5 of the six port switching valve to the nebulizer of the ICP-MS, as described on page 42.

6 Connect a carrier solution source line to the input (right hand side as the user looks at the valve) of the full height syringe switching valve of the SPM and place the other end of the line into a source bottle for the carrier solution. The tubing for this should be long enough to reach the source bottle and touch the bottom of the bottle. Ensure that the tubing is routed such that it does not become entangled with any moving parts of the workstation.

7 Connect a rinse line to the input (right hand side as the user looks at the valve) of the half height syringe switching valve of the VSM and place the other end of the line into a source bottle for the rinse solution. The tubing for this line should be long enough to reach the source bottle and to touch the bottom of the bottle. Ensure that the tubing is routed such that it does not become entangled with any moving parts of the workstation.

Connecting the VPM to an ICP-MS NebulizerThe SPM module pumps the sample into the ICP-MS nebulizer, via the six-port switching valve. Therefore, the sample tubing that connects the workstation to an ICP-MS should be routed directly from Port 5 of the six-port switching valve to the nebulizer. Do not route the sample line through the ICP-MS peristaltic pump; this is no longer required for sample introduction and is only used for the draining of the ICP-MS spray chamber.

1 Position the MVX-7100 µL workstation as close to the ICP-MS as possible.

2 Cut a length of 0.030” x 0.062” sample tubing to the shortest length possible which will allow connection of Port 5 to the nebulizer without any kinking.

3 Connect the tubing to Port 5 of the 6-port valve and to the nebulizer. The nebulizer that is being used will dictate how this line can be connected at the nebulizer end. If unsure, please contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies for further information.

If a longer length of tubing is required, cut a new piece of tubing. Avoid splicing the tubing; splices create small voids which can increase carryover.

Connecting Tubing to the Rinse StationThe rinse station is located at the left end of the standards rack at the back of the sample rack base. Typically, deionized water, an acid rinse such as a 2% HNO3, or a solution from the kerosene family, is used as the rinse solution and is pumped into the rinse station by the peristaltic pump on the back of the autosampler.

You can use one or both channels of rinse station as required by your application and the same or different solutions can be pumped to the two channels at the same time by action of the peristaltic pump. If your application requires only one channel, use channel 1 (the channel on the left hand side as you look at the rinse station). See FIGURE 3-26 for a visual representation of the flows and channels of the rinse station.

The input flows for the rinse station can be connected via either threaded nut and ferrule fittings (used for narrow ID tubing) or via barbed fittings (for wider ID tubing).

Direction of FlowSince the inlets of the rinse station are at the bottom of the rinse station, the rinse solution flows from the bottom to the top. Up-flow rinsing is the most effective method for decontaminating the sample needle between samples.

The used rinse solution flows into a drain reservoir within the rinse station after exiting the top of a channel. The solution then drains to a waste container.

Rinse Solution RecyclingFor some applications it may be possible to recycle the rinse solution by draining the rinse solution into the same container from which it was drawn. Be sure to change the rinse solution on a regular basis, as required by the application. If the application requires that the rinse solution be completely uncontaminated, however, use separate containers for the clean and waste rinse solution.

Gravity Drain ArrangementMake sure that the end of the waste line remains above the level of the liquid in the waste container.

The rinse solution flows from the station channel to the drain (rinse out) reservoir within the rinse station. The waste rinse can then be pumped from the drain reservoir or allowed to drain under gravity.

The advantages of gravity drain arrangements are:

• Only one rinse pump channel is required

• Tubing connections are simpler

Pumped Drain ArrangementIf the application requires a very high flow rate of the rinse solution, waste rinse solution may need to be pumped from the rinse station to prevent overflow. Pumping may also be necessary if the waste receptacle is far from the rinse station, or if there is a chance that the end of the waste tube may become submerged in the waste liquid.

Tubing ConsiderationsVerify that the supplied tubing material is compatible with the rinse solution you are using. There are many different types of tubing that can be used for the rinse station. Clear Tygon® tubing is provided. Viton®, Tygon® Fuel and Lube (yellow), and PharMed® (opaque) may also be used for pump tubing depending on the application and user preference. Clear Superthane® tubing can used everywhere other than the pump tubing. Contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies if you need different tubing material.

For barb type fittings, carefully press the tubing straight on to the fittings to avoid breaking them. The tubing should completely cover the barb of the fitting.

Connecting the Tubing to the Peristaltic PumpOn the rear of the XYZ autosampler there is a peristaltic pump that drives liquid reagents into and out of the rinse station.

Tubing should be connected between this pump and the rinse station as follows:

1 On the back of the XYZ autosampler, connect the rinse tubing to one or both channels of the output of the peristaltic pump (as shown inFIGURE 3-27). Connect the other end of each tube that is used to the input port(s) of the rinse station (as shown in FIGURE 3-26).

2 Connect rinse tubing to the input(s) of the peristaltic pump. Place the other end of this tubing into the rinse solution source bottle. Ensure that the tubing can reach the bottom of the rinse source bottle.

3 Connect up to 1.8 meters of the larger 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) ID tubing between the outlet drain fitting of the rinse station and the waste container. Ensure that the tubing in the waste bottle remains above the surface of the liquid. If the waste tubing is immersed in the waste bottle then solution may back up and overflow the rinse station.

Installing the Sample Rack Base or the Optional PRM ModuleSample racks or well plates are mounted on a sample rack base during operation of the MVX-7100 µL Workstation. There are two options for the sample rack base:

Sample Rack BaseThe standard sample rack base that is offered for mounting racks and well plates is a simple frame that can accept two racks or plates or a combination of the two.

Peltier Rack ModuleThe MVX-7100 µL workstation can also be supplied with a peltier rack module (PRM) for mounting sample racks and well plates for analysis. The PRM provides temperature control between 4˚C and 40˚C. Temperature control at the lower end of this range is particularly important for stabilizing low sample volumes and samples that are more volatile and to limit evaporation. Temperature control at the higher end of this range can be useful for some sample preparation applications.

Both the standard sample rack base and the PRM module are fitted to the rack adapter plate on the base area in front of the standards position rack and the rinse station. Both the standard rack base and the PRM are positioned with four ‘feet’ into four corresponding slots in the rack adapter plate.

When a standard rack base or PRM is positioned on the rack adapter plate, sample racks or well plates can then be positioned on top. Two sample racks or well plates (or one of each) can be positioned and used for analysis at any one time.

4 Verifying Installation

Once installation of the MVX-7100 µL workstation is complete, it is important to verify that you have installed it correctly. Attempting to use it before ensuring that it is installed correctly may result in damage to the system.

Verification consists of the following actions which are described in this chapter:

Opening the CETAC Workstation operating software and ensuring that the communications interface between the workstation hardware and the host computer is working correctly.

Checking the alignment of the sample needle with respect to the rinse station.

Checking the alignment of the sample needle with respect to the sample tubes or well plate wells.

Verifying Communication with the MVX-7100 µL Workstation

1 Check that the workstation is connected to the host computer (either by USB or RS232 cable connection, see page 29 for details) and apply power to the XYZ autosampler and associated modules.

2 Double-click the CETAC Workstation shortcut (which should have been established on the host computer desktop during installation).

between the workstation and the host computer then the software will have automatically detected the COM port that is required.

4 Click Initialize Communication. The operating software will take 5 to 10 seconds to initialize.

5 Click the Manual Controls tab.

6 Examine the choices under Pump Address and establish that the addresses for the VSM and SPM(s) that are associated with the workstation are present. Address 16 corresponds to the VSM and addresses 1 to 15 correspond to the SPMs that are in place. The standard configuration of one VSM and one SPM will be represented as addresses 1 and 16.

7 Click the Autosampler tab.

8 Click the home button to ensure that the XYZ autosampler is in the home position.

How to Tell If There Is a Communication ProblemIf the computer is not communicating with the workstation, then the CETAC Workstation operating software will start in offline mode and display the Platform Configurator window.

If a syringe or other accessory module is not communicating with the workstation, the address will not be displayed on the Manual Controls tab.

If there is a communication problem, make sure that all of the devices are turned on and that communication cables are attached securely. The accessory modules communicate through their power cables.

Checking the Sample Needle/Sample Tube or Well AlignmentTo ensure that the sample needle is aligned to the sample positions—whether that be a sample vial, tube or well plate well—follow these steps:

1 Click the Autosampler tab.

2 Click the home button.This ensures that the sample needle is positioned over the workstation rinse station and that it is in its highest position.

6 After ensuring that the needle is centered, raise the needle and return to the home position.

7 If desired, check the alignment at another sample position.

5 Using the Workstation

Before using the workstation, ensure that your lab environment provides operating conditions that will prolong the life of the workstation. Once the proper operating conditions are met, you can arrange the sample vial racks and start the workstation sequence run. When you finish using the workstation, you may need to flush the rinse station and flow path before shutting the workstation down.

Be sure to review the safety precautions beginning on page 87 before you begin to use the workstation.

PUNCTURE HAZARDNever attempt to load, unload or reposition the sample vial racks or sample vials while the workstation is operating. The sample needle may move unexpectedly and cause an injury.

Establishing Optimal Operating ConditionsThe workstation operates reliably even under less than ideal conditions. It is not, however, indestructible. Malfunction or damage can occur if specific operating conditions are not met. Meeting these conditions requires that you create the proper lab environment, replace workstation components that wear out under normal use, and purchase the appropriate supplies for use with the workstation. The following sections explain how to meet these conditions.

Damage or malfunction that results from unsatisfactory operating conditions may constitute misuse and abuse and be excluded from warranty coverage.

Creating the Lab EnvironmentTo create satisfactory operating conditions in your lab environment, follow these guidelines:

Operate the workstation in a conventional lab environment where the temperature is 50–95 °F (10–35 °C), the humidity is 20–70% non-condensing, and the unit is not exposed to excessive flammable or corrosive materials.

Avoid rough handling of the workstation. If possible, do not expose the workstation to vibration or shock.

Protect the workstation from long-term exposure to condensation, corrosive materials, solvent vapor, continual standing liquids, or large spills into the workstation cabinet or arm. Exposures of this type can damage the drive mechanisms as well as the electronics.

Observe the same general electrostatic discharge precautions as with any other integrated circuit electronic devices. Low humidity environments, especially when combined with static-generating materials, require maximum care.

Discharge static buildup and ground to the autosampler base or cabinet before performing any maintenance. Do not touch or short-circuit the communication ports.

Avoid using the workstation if strong electromagnetic interference, radio frequency interference, or radioactivity is present. Interference fields can cause erratic operation of the workstation. The workstation will not function properly if the level of radioactivity is above background.

Purchasing SuppliesBecause the life-span of the sample and reagent vials varies, you should maintain an adequate supply of spare vials. When you need to purchase additional supplies, it is extremely important that you choose the appropriate sizes and materials.

When you purchase sample and/or reagent vials, make sure they meet the following requirements:

The diameter of the sample or reagent vial matches the rack size you are using.

The height does not interfere with motion of the sample needle.

The material is compatible with the samples you are analyzing or the reference standards you are using. This requirement also applies to the peristaltic pump tubing.

Use of mismatched sample vials and sample vial racks may result in malfunctions or sample spills. Be sure your vials meet the given requirements.

To order additional supplies, refer to the CETAC Accessories and Supplies Catalog for the workstation, available on the CD or on the CETAC Web site, www.cetac.com.

Arranging the Sample Vial RacksMake sure that the arrangement of vials and racks matches the arrangement defined in the software which is controlling the workstation.

Incorrectly defining the arrangement of vials and racks can result in damage to the needle, sample spills, and invalid analysis results.

Using Septum VialsSpecial care is required when using septum vials due to the use of the glass needle.

After the needle pierces a septum, the septum deforms slightly. If the needle pierces the septum at another location on the septum, horizontal forces are applied to the glass needle which may cause it to break.

Therefore, pierced septa should be replaced whenever vials are moved in any way.

If the needle reenters the vial at precisely the same location, horizontal forces are minimal. Multiple samples may be drawn from a vial without replacing the septum if the vial has not been touched.

Use new septa to prevent damage to the needle.

Starting the WorkstationOnce you arrange the sample vial racks and ensure that the arrangement is correctly defined in the software, you can start the workstation and let it run until the sampling sequence is finished.

PINCH HAZARDKeep fingers, hair, and loose clothing away from the moving parts of the workstation.

1 Ensure that the rinse station is properly connected.

2 Manually move the Z drive to the left and toward the end of the arm.

The sample needle will briefly dip down when the power is turned on, then move to the home position. Moving the Z drive to a “safe” position ensures that the sample needle will not collide with anything.

3 Turn the power switch on the power supply ON.

4 Turn the power switches on the autosampler and accessory modules ON.

5 Purge air from the rinse system by placing the rinse solution uptake tubing in the rinse solution source and running the rinse solution through the rinse station.

Ensure there are no air bubbles visible in the rinse uptake tubing before you run samples with the workstation.

NOTE FOR AQUEOUS APPLICATIONS

If you are flushing the rinse system during initial startup, first use a 2% nitric acid solution as the rinse agent. Flush the rinse system a second time using deionized water as the rinse agent.

6 Access the host computer’s software and activate the workstation program.

The workstation runs until it reaches the end of the sampling sequence.

Shutting Down the WorkstationTo shut down the workstation, complete the following steps:

1 Drain the rinse system by removing the rinse solution uptake tubing from the rinse solution source. Let the peristaltic pump run until all solution drains from the tube attached to the rinse station outlet.

You may wish to create a “cleanup” method which will flush the syringes and tubing.

If you use a rinse solution other than deionized water, flush the rinse system with deionized water before shutting down the workstation. For more information, see “Flushing the Rinse Station and Flow Path” on page 54.

2 Turn the power switches on the autosampler and accessory modules OFF.

3 Turn the power switch on the power supply OFF.

4 If you will be performing maintenance, unplug the power cord either at the power supply or at the wall outlet.

Flushing the Rinse Station and Flow PathGenerally, you can operate the workstation without flushing the rinse system. Under normal circumstances, you can simply drain the rinse system prior to shutting down the workstation. However, you need to flush the rinse station and flow path under two circumstances:

During initial startup of the workstation after installation.

After the use of strong bases, acids, or organic solvents as rinse agents.

Flushing the rinse system during initial startup of the workstation removes any contaminants that could cause interference during sample analysis. Flushing the rinse system after using strong rinse agents prevents degradation and failure of the flow path components.

To flush the rinse station and flow path, complete the following steps:

1 Insert the rinse uptake tubing into a deionized water source.

NOTE

If you are flushing the rinse system during initial startup, first use a 2% nitric acid solution as the rinse agent, followed by deionized water.

2 Run the rinse solution through the rinse station and flow path for 5 to 10 minutes.

Once you flush the rinse system, you can proceed with the sampling sequence or drain the rinse system as part of the shutdown procedure.

Calibrating the Z DepthThe Z depth determines how far the sample needle descends. There are two Z depths which can be set independently: one for the standards vials and rinse station, and one for the sample vials or wells.

When to calibrate the Z depth

Set the Z depth before using the autosampler. Operating with an incorrect Z depth can damage the sample needle.

The CETAC Workstation software will ask you to set the Z depth for each new script you create. You should also set the Z depth when:

A new brand or size of vial is being used. Vial racks have been replaced or rearranged. There is any possibility that the height of the standards rack has changed. The sample needle has been adjusted or replaced.

How to calibrate the Z depthPlace a reagent bottle in the first standard position, and place a sample vial or well plate in the first sample position (rack 1, position 1).

1 Click the Calibrate Z Depth tab.

2 Click Go To Stnd Location.

3 Set the movement step to 5.0 mm.

4 Click the down arrow until the sample needle is about 1 cm above the bottom of the vial.

5 Set the movement step to 1.0 mm.

6 Use the up and down arrows to adjust the height of the sample needle.

7 When the desired height has been reached, click the mark button.

8 Click Go To Rack Location and repeat the process for the first sample location.

Writing and Running Scripts with the CETAC Workstation SoftwareThe CETAC Workstation software is used to control the CETAC MVX-7100 workstation along with its syringe pumps, the 6-port valve, and optional Peltier rack module. Scripts can coordinate timing with the ICP-MS, allowing you to analyze large numbers of samples unattended.

If you run the software on a PC which is not connected to an MVX-7100 workstation, you can:

If you run the software on a PC which is connected to an MVX-7100 workstation, you can:

Manually control workstation components including the autosampler, valves, syringe pumps, and Peltier temperature controller

The software will automatically detect the COM port where the workstation is connected.

Always check that the hardware configuration set in the software matches the actual configuration of the system. The type of rack or well plate which is selected is very important; if the wrong type of rack is selected, the sample needle may crash into the rack and break.

6 Maintaining the Workstation

Routine maintenance of the workstation consists of daily and weekly cleaning of specific workstation components. Routine maintenance also includes checking for leaks or other damage. Additional periodic maintenance tasks may be required, including replacement of workstation components such as the peristaltic pump tubing, sample needle, or rinse station tubing,.

Discharge static buildup and ground to the workstation base or cabinet before performing any maintenance. Do not touch or short-circuit the communication ports.

Cleaning the WorkstationCleaning the workstation is the primary maintenance task you perform. Failure to do so regularly causes increased wear and reduces the workstation’s life.

You must clean the workstation both daily and weekly to prevent damage and extend its life. It is especially important to clean up spills and remove contaminants, such as abrasives, from the workstation’s moving parts. It may also be necessary to chemically neutralize spills. The following sections explain daily and weekly cleaning procedures.

Daily External CleaningUse of the workstation often results in spills on workstation components such as the sample tray. Good maintenance requires that you clean the workstation daily. To do so, complete the following steps:

1 Shut down and unplug the workstation.

For information about shutting down the workstation, see page 54.

2 Wipe the sample tray, workstation cabinet, and autosampler arm using a towel dampened with a lab-grade cleaning agent.

Do not allow the cleaning agent to come into contact with the lead screws. Also, never lubricate either of the two lead screws.

3 Repeat step two, using a towel dampened with clear water.

This process removes any remaining contaminants.

4 Dry the sample tray, workstation cabinet, and autosampler arm using a dry towel.

The workstation must be thoroughly dry before you turn the power on.

Weekly CleaningAlthough cleaning it daily removes spills and contaminants from most of the workstation components, it is necessary to clean the workstation more thoroughly once a week. To do so, complete the following steps:

1 Shut down and unplug the workstation.

2 Remove the sample tray.

For information about removing the sample tray, see “Replacing the Sample Tray” later in this chapter.

3 Wipe loose particles off the Y-Axis lead screw with a dry, lint-free cloth.

The Y-Axis lead screw is a large metal screw located inside the autosampler arm.

Never lubricate the lead screws. The lead screw nuts are compounded with a dry film lubricant. Oiling the lead screws will cause gumming, galling, and binding of the sample needle assembly.

4 Wipe the workstation exterior and base until they are clean, using a towel dampened with a lab-grade cleaning agent, followed by a towel dampened with clear water.

Pay special attention to the slider block and guide rails along the tube of the autosampler arm.

5 Wash the sample tray in a warm detergent solution.

Make sure you remove all spills and stains.

6 Rinse the sample tray with water and then dry it.

Ensure that the sample tray is thoroughly dry.

7 Replace the sample tray on the autosampler base.

For information about replacing the tray, see “Replacing the Sample Tray” later in this chapter.

Checking for LeaksIt is important that you check all of the components for damage before you operate the workstation. To do so, complete the following steps:

1 Shut down and unplug the workstation.

2 Visually inspect the sample needle, syringes, fittings, and tubing for leaks or signs of deterioration.

If you detect a leak or other damage to a workstation component, you must replace it. For more information, see the appropriate section in this chapter.

Replacing Peristaltic Pump TubingRoutine maintenance of the autosampler includes replacement of the peristaltic pump tubing. This tubing will probably be the most frequently replaced item on the autosampler. If you use strong bases, acids, or solvents as rinse agents, the tubing may break down rapidly.

The tubing is installed as a single cartridge. The plates at the ends of the cartridge are color coded according to the tubing size and material.

To replace the peristaltic pump tubing, complete the following steps:

PINCH HAZARDTurn off power before servicing the peristaltic pump or pump tubing.

1 Shut down and unplug the autosampler.

2 Release the pressure shoe by lifting the handle. The shoe is a flexible band which is held in place by spring-loaded handles.

Replacing the Sample NeedleYou must replace the sample needle if it breaks or shows other signs of deterioration.

NOTICEDon't try to adjust the Z depth to compensate for a broken or shortened sample needle. Use only the manufacturer-recommended sample needle, which has a length of 3 inches. Using a short or broken sample needle may result in the needle holder crashing into the top of the rinse station.

6 Carefully replace the guide plate. Align the needle in the guide plate and gently push the guide plate straight up, then install the screws.

Adjusting the Sample Needle Height

1 Use the 1/2” and 7/16” wrenches to loosen the sample needle holder from the bulkhead.

2 The top of the nut on the needle should be about flush with the top nut on the bulkhead.

Adjust the sample needle so that about 1 mm (not to exceed 2 mm) of the needle tip extends below the guide plate.

If you are using a different length needle, you may need to use the thumbscrews to adjust the height of the guide plate and the range of motion of the sample needle. In that case, you should also check the height of the standards, calibrate the Z height using the CETAC Workstation software, and verify that there is adequate clearance for the needle above all components in the sample area.

3 Turn the needle holder so that the flat edge faces toward the front of the autosampler.

4 Tighten the nut on the needle holder.

Testing the New Needle

1 Make sure the Z drive clear of any obstructions.

2 Start the workstation.

3 Manually operate the syringe to push some rinse solution through the sample needle.

4 Visually check for leaks. If necessary, tighten the nut another 1/4 turn.

5 Reinstall the clear shield.

Replacing the Rinse Station TubingIf the rinse station tubing is typically exposed to deionized water as a rinsing agent, you do not need to replace it often. However, if you use other rinsing agents, such as acids or solvents, the tubing is likely to deteriorate more rapidly. To replace the rinse station tubing, complete the following steps:

1 Shut down and unplug the workstation.

2 Remove the sample rack.

3 Move the autosampler away from the home position by gently pushing it.

Moving the autosampler arm ensures that the sample needle will not be damaged while you replace the rinse station tubing.

4 Disconnect the rinse solution uptake and drain tubing.

Apply only a linear force when removing the tubing to prevent the fittings from breaking.

5 Reconnect the rinse solution uptake and drain tubing.

Apply only a linear force when replacing the tubing to prevent the fittings from breaking.

6 Move the autosampler arm back to the home position.

Replacing the BatteryThe battery in the autosampler is used to store diagnostic data in SRAM memory. The battery does not need to be replaced for routine operation of the workstation.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDReplace only with a CR2032 (3.0V, non-rechargeable lithium coin cell) or equivalent battery. Using an incorrect battery may cause fire, explosion, or leakage, resulting in personal injury or equipment damage.Do not open battery, dispose in fire, heat above 100C (212F), expose contents to water, recharge, or put in backwards – battery may explode or leak and cause personal injury.

1 Turn off the power switch on the back of the autosampler.

2 Unplug the autosampler from the power supply.

3 Disconnect all of the various serial and other cables that normally attach to its back.

4 Remove the screws that hold the cover to the case.

There are two screws on the front, and either two or four screws on the top of the autosampler.

1 Disconnect the power cord.

2 Inspect all of the equipment which is plugged into the power supply for moisture or other conditions which might pose a hazard and cause the new fuse to blow.

3 Using your fingernails or a small, flat-blade screwdriver, squeeze the ends of the fuse holder.

4 Pull the fuse holder out.

5 Replace the blown fuse with a new one of the same size, type, and rating.

7 Troubleshooting the Workstation

In the event that the product does not function properly, isolate the problem to determine if it originates in the host computer, the analytical instrument, or the workstation.

This chapter explains how to troubleshoot workstation problems. If you cannot solve a problem using the steps given in this chapter, you should contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies Customer Service and Support.

Power System ProblemsA possible cause of system malfunction is a problem in the power system. If the system is not functional, it is possible that it is not receiving power. If this is the case, both of the LED status indicator lights will be off. To troubleshoot this problem, complete the following steps in sequence until the problem is solved:

1 Check that the power switch on the workstation is turned on.

2 Check that the power cord is plugged in firmly between the power input on the workstation and the external power supply and also between the power supply and the wall outlet.

If the cable is plugged in, ensure that it is not damaged in any way.

3 Check that the power supply is turned on.

4 If the external power supply is plugged into the autosampler and turned on, cycle the autosampler power switch. The sample needle should move up and the autosampler should initialize. After initialization, the status LED on the front of the autosampler should light up.

Communications Interface ProblemsOperation of the workstation is directed by the host computer. A malfunction can indicate a problem with the cable or with the configuration of the software on the host computer. The following sections explain how to troubleshoot these problems.

RS-232 Cable ProblemsThe first step in troubleshooting communications interface problems is to check the RS-232 cable.

1 Check the RS-232 cable to ensure it is plugged in to the COM1 port on the XYZ autosampler.

If the cable is plugged in, ensure that it is tightened properly and not damaged in any way.

Note that the cable must be plugged into the COM1 port, not the COM2 port.

2 Check the host computer to ensure that the RS-232 cable is connected to the appropriate COM port.

If the cable is plugged in, ensure that it is tightened properly and not damaged in any way.

3 Check the serial port settings (9600, N, 8, 1).

If the wrong port or baud rate is selected, change the configuration. For information about changing the software configuration, see Chapter 4, “Verifying Installation.”

USB Cable ProblemsAn option to using RS-232 communications protocol is to use USB protocol. The USB port located on the back of the autosampler is an alternate connection protocol option to the RS-232 port at Com 1. Either RS-232 or USB may be used, but not both at once.

1 Check that the USB cable to ensure it is plugged into the port on the autosampler.

2 Check the host computer to ensure that the USB cable is connected to the appropriate USB port.

3 Check that the USB cable is not damaged in any way.

4 Check the host computer to ensure that the USB drivers are installed for USB operation of the autosampler.

Load the proper USB drivers to the host computer from the CD that was provided with the workstation.

Software Configuration ProblemsIf the cords are connected properly and the system is still not functioning, ensure that the software is communicating correctly with the workstation. To do so, verify proper operation of all manual functions by completing the following steps:

1 Connect to the workstation using a terminal emulation program (see Operating a CETAC Workstation Using a Terminal Program on page 79).

2 Enter some commands, such as HOME.

If the commands have no effect, and a USB connection is being used, check that the workstation is plugged into the same USB port as it was when the driver software was configured. Unlike many consumer devices, each USB port used as a “virtual” COM port must be individually configured.

3 If manual commands work, but the workstation does not operate with the host software, carefully check that the host software is configured to use the COM port where the workstation is plugged in.

If a USB connection is used, and if the manual commands work, but the HOST software fails to operate the workstation, check that the same COM port number is configured in the HOST software and in the USB device driver.

Z-Drive Assembly ProblemsAn autosampler malfunction may be caused by a problem in the Z-Drive assembly. You can easily determine that a malfunction is related to the Z-Drive assembly if you hear a loud chattering noise when the autosampler power switch is on or if the sample needle is not moving. To troubleshoot Z-Drive assembly problems, complete the following steps:

Returning the Product to CETAC for ServiceRefer to the following information if you need to return the product to Teledyne CETAC Technologies for service.

Shipping the ProductFollow these guidelines when shipping the product:

Contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies before shipping the product.

Use the original packing materials. If the original shipping materials are not available, place a generous amount of shock-absorbing material around the instrument and place it in a box that does not allow movement during shipping. Seal the box securely.

Pre-pay all shipping expenses including adequate insurance.

Write the following information on a tag and attach it to the product:

Name and address of the owner Product model number and serial number Description of service required or failure indications The RMA number supplied by CETAC

Mark the shipping container as FRAGILE.

In all correspondence, refer to the instrument by model name or number and full serial number.

Do not return products which are contaminated by radioactive materials, infectious agents, or other materials constituting health hazards to CETAC employees.

Returned Product Procedures Claims for shipment damage (evident or concealed) must be filed with the carrier by the buyer. No replacements will be provided, nor repairs made, for products returned without such approval. Any returned product must be accompanied by a return authorization number. Returned Product Warranty Determination After CETAC’s examination, warranty or out of warranty status will be determined. If a warranted defect exists, the product will be repaired at no charge and shipped prepaid back to the buyer. If the buyer desires an air freight return, the product will be shipped collect. Warranty repairs do not extend the original warranty period.

If an out of warranty defect exists, the buyer shall be notified of the repair cost. At such time the buyer must issue a valid purchase order to cover the cost of repair and freight, or authorize the products to be shipped back as is, at the buyer’s expense. Failure to obtain a purchase order number approval within fifteen (15) days of notification will result in the products being returned as is, at the buyer’s expense.

8 Operating a CETAC Workstation Using a

Terminal Program

The workstation can be controlled using a serial communications protocol. You can use any terminal emulation program, including:

C-Term. This program is installed with the Xpress Configuration Tool software, and runs on Windows 2000 and later. (recommended)

This chapter explains how to operate a CETAC autosampler using either of the two programs.

Using C-Term™The autosampler can be controlled by sending it simple commands. This can be helpful for troubleshooting. You can use any terminal emulation program. This chapter explains how to operate a CETAC autosampler using the C-Term terminal program, which is provided on the software CD.

C-Term is a simple terminal program developed to validate the installation and functionality of various CETAC devices. C-Term communicates through a serial (RS-232) port on the host computer. If the autosampler is connected to a USB port, the device driver will create a virtual serial port.

Installing C-Term

1 On the included CD, find the C-Term folder.

2 Double-click CTerm_setup.exe.

3 On the Start Menu, click All Programs | Teledyne CETAC Technologies | Support Tools | C-Term.

Overview of the C-Term Window

Commands typed in this window are sent to the CETAC device connected to the opened port. The typed commands will appear in light green in the terminal buffer. Responses from the autosampler will appear in red. Non-printing characters such as carriage returns will appear as ASCII hexadecimal numbers surrounded by square brackets; for example, [0D] is the carriage return character.

Configuring C-TermBy default, C-Term attempts to open COM1 the first time it is executed. If the autosampler is connected to another COM port, configure C-Term to use the desired port.

1 On the Tools menu, click Setup Serial Port.

2 Select the desired COM port and click OK.

NOTE

The autosampler communicates at 9600 baud (which is the default.)

Only installed COM ports, including USB virtual COM ports, will appear in the Comm Port menu.

Power Cord Set Requirements The power cord set supplied with your instrument meets the requirements of the country where you purchased the instrument. Power is supplied to the autosampler through the included 24V power supply.

Power Cord Safety Maintenance The operator should check the power/signal supply cord condition. The equipment should not be operated if the mains inlet is cracked or broken. Any obvious damage to the case (from a drop or fall) should be checked by service personnel for loose or damaged parts. See individual parts lists for approved replacement parts.

Mains DisconnectThe power switch on the rear panel is not the mains disconnect. Power mains disconnect is accomplished by unplugging the power cord at the power supply or at the wall outlet. Ensure the power cord is easily accessible and removable, in the event of an emergency which requires immediate disconnection.

Cleaning InstructionsFor additional cleaning information, see “cleaning” in the index.

To clean the exterior surfaces of the instrument, complete the following steps:

1 Shut down and unplug the instrument.

2 Wipe the instrument exterior surfaces only using a towel dampened with a lab-grade cleaning agent.

3 Repeat step 2, using a towel dampened with clear water.

4 Dry the instrument exterior using a dry towel.

SHOCK HAZARDDo not allow any liquid to enter the instrument cabinet other than as intended through the specified tubing, or come into contact with any electrical components. The instrument must be thoroughly dry before you reconnect power, or turn the instrument on.

Mechanical HazardsIf you insert any part of your body between the moving parts of the workstation, you could be injured. FIGURE 9-1 shows the location of potential hazards.

Accessory Module: A module which is connected to the autosampler, such as a valve syringe module or SPM-700+ syringe pump module.

Analytical Instrument: The instrument, such as an ICP-MS, to which the workstation is connected.

ETFE: Ethylenetetraflouroethylene (Tefzel®).

FEP: Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene.

Host Computer: The computer that controls the workstation and the instrument to which the workstation is attached.

Host Software: The measurement automation software on the host computer which controls the workstation.
