  • Midnight Mayhem 2016 was a collaborative effort between many of the student organizations on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) campus. The UWRF

Residence Hall Association (RHA) facilitated the planning of the program, along with communication and funding.

Overall, the program was very well received by campus with over 500 UWRF campus residents in attendance. Many of the students were excited for the signature events such as Peter

Boie, the magician, inflatable bungee run and inflatable boxing. Even though these events were put on by RHA and

the Office of Student Involvement, participants still found plenty of time to visit the student led events.

These student led events were designed to provide an opportunity for student organizations to showcase what they

do best. For example, the UWRF Rodeo team gave an interactive tutorial on calf roping, while the Alpha Sigma Alpha

Sorority decorated everyone’s hair. During this time, the Art Ambassadors showed off their skills with henna tattoos and

everyone tested their dance moves in the Just Dance Competition hosted by the UWRF Dance Theatre. Even

though this is not an exhaustive list, it shows how new and returning students experienced what UWRF student led

    organizations do.

UWRF hosted the Wisconsin Resident Assistant Conference this past year, which happened to be on the same weekend as Midnight Mayhem. This could have been seen as a scheduling

conflict, but instead was embraced as an opportunity to highlight a UWRF signature event to over 100 student leaders

and their Advisors from across the state of Wisconsin.

  • Starting in October, the RHA Advisor sent out emails to UWRF student organizations and

clubs, inviting their organization to be part of Midnight Mayhem. The email advertised the program as a “Live-action Involvement Fair”

where they could showcase what their organization does best.

In November, RHA completed the contract for inflatable bungee run and boxing. They also met with the University Center Production Services and Reservation staff to finalize

room and technology needs. RHA began

working on marketing with the Student Affairs Graphics

Artist. The Office of Student Involvement

    confirmed their contract with Peter

    Boie.

  • From November to December, RHA worked with student organizations to determine what event

they wanted to host, what type of room they needed and what supplies had to be purchased.

In January, supplies were purchased, directional signs were made, advertising was put up and

volunteers were found. On January, 29th 2016 Midnight Mayhem took place.

In February, the RHA executive board held an event to gather information on what worked and

did not work. They then facilitated a conversation at the RHA full-body meeting to get feedback from

all of the hall councils and residents in the buildings.

  • To welcome new and returning students back to campus after winter break, allowing them an opportunity to reconnect and create new friendships

To offer alternative late-night, substance free events for students to experience

Develop partnerships between RHA, the Office of Student Involvement and other student organizations

Offer student organizations a chance to exhibit what they do via a “Live-action Involvement Fair”

Allow UWRF students a new and innovative way to connect and find interests in student organizations

Incorporate the attendees of the Wisconsin Resident Assistant Conference inviting them to participate in Midnight Mayhem so they may have the inspiration to create a similar program at their university

  • One of the positive effects of Midnight Mayhem was that it kept students on campus their first weekend back, and offered these students alternative events to do on a Friday night. While attending, students

had every opportunity to make new connections and reconnect after a long winter break. Many Resident Assistants on campus also used this program as an

opportunity to become closer with their residents.

Another impact Midnight Mayhem made was developing connectivity between the residence halls

via RHA, the Office of Student Involvement, and student organizations. While RHA may plan and fund the program, all organizations are represented equally during the event. The communication

leading up to the program helped build the connection

between many of these organizations on campus,

creating a partnership everyone can benefit from.

  • UWRF student organizations were given the unique opportunity to truly showcase their organization to

student leaders and Advisors from across Wisconsin. When attending the program, these student leaders

were able to visualize how their own RHA organizations or student organizations could work

together to host a similar program.

One aspect of conferences is showing attendees the campus of the host. Midnight Mayhem showed much more then just the campus. It showed UWRF student organizations, UWRF RHA, and the Office of Student

Involvement working together to make a unique program for all students to attend.

It also gave them the opportunity to form bonds with UWRF students and

network with all attendees. Some of the best friendships can be made in one night and

between people that live across the state. These

bonds were formed throughout the nights

    events according to some attendees.

  • “Midnight Mayhem is all about creating a night of fun and memories for UWRF students. All students at the event seemed to be having a great time, and even got a souvenir if they visited the photo-booth.” -Veronica Tabor, Hall Director

“Midnight Mayhem fits its title perfectly because the first week of classes are always mayhem and this program was a way to relax and unwind after everything that happened that first week.”

    -Rylee Fabry, RHA Representative

“A live-action involvement fair, we invited every organization from campus with the intent of RHA to coordinate, but the purpose is to show what our students do.” -Bill Lenarz, RHA Advisor

  • All funding came from the RHA programming fund for the year. Some of the supplies used, such as board games, poker sets, and rodeo supplies came from

past years, or were donated by student organizations for use that night.

    Inflatables $1075.00

    University Center Room Reservations $296.13

    Hair Flair Supplies $101.49

    Video Game Tournament $96.74

    Concessions $75.12

    Total: $1644.48

  • Midnight Mayhem can easily be incorporated on any campus. Most campuses have a building that would

be big enough to house an event of this scale, for example, a university center or student union.

Besides the space, the program needs the involvement of student organizations, which could cause a problem or be easy. UWRF however, has

found that if the coordinating organization is able to pay for supplies more student organizations want to participate. Partnering or co-hosting the event with another department or office on campus can also help keep the costs of the program down, while

helping to further create partnerships for the future. Since the program is so adaptable, universities can

put their own twists on the program to create the most inclusive and educational experience for their

    residents.

  • The RHA Advisor met with the University Center Operations, Production Services and Reservations staff

to review and recap the event. They all confirmed that the event went very well and was cleaned up accordingly.

The RHA executive group hosted a debriefing event and gathered various information from hall councils in the different buildings. During this time, they realized that some of the concessions, such as snow cones, do not

work well indoors because of the mess they made. Another problem was that some of the areas where events were housed were not easily found, and the

directional signage was placed in a confusing manner. Despite these setbacks, RHA discovered that the program was in fact very successful. Many of the

attendees and student organization hosts thought that it succeeded by bringing people back to campus in an inclusive manner and being an alternative late night

    activity on a Friday night.

  • Midnight Mayhem began in 2006 as the Res Life all-night party, hosted in residence halls. It has since evolved to Midnight Mayhem as part of Freeze-Fest

which is the winter week of welcome at UWRF. In 2009-2010 NRHH had a large role in planning the program until RHA was re-chartered at UWRF in Fall of 2010

  • Midnight Mayhem has been adapting since it was first created in 2006 by a group of Resident

Assistants. For next year, the UWRF RHA wants to make a more meaningful attempt to involve Student Senate. This would create a well-rounded group of

student organizations present, expanding on a growing pool of Greek Life, Agricultural, Art, and Dance organizations, as well as NRHH, Campus

    Ministries, and RHA.

Another goal RHA is incorporating is not falling into the trap of inviting the same student organizations each year. They want to see diverse involvement and feel that if the same student organizations are

invited back each year it would not encourage more to participate.
