Muzaffarpur district, ‘The Land of Leechi’ was created in 1875 for administrative convenience by splitting up the earlier district of Tirhut. Now, Muzaffarpur district is a part of Tirhut division.

The present district of Muzaffarpur came into existence during the 18th century and is named after Muzaffar Khan, an Afghan revenue officer under the British. In 1972, the districts of Sitamarhi and Vaishali were split off from Muzaffarpur.

Muzaffarpur is bounded by the districts of East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Vaishali Saran, Darbhanga, Samastipur, West Saran and Gopalganj.

Muzaffarpur is one of the many gateways to Nepal. The important rivers flowing through the district are Bagmati, Gandak, Burhi

Gandak, and Lakhandeyee

INTRODUCTION

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND According to the Ramayana, King Janak ruled Videha, which is the traditional name

for northern Bihar including east Bihar.

Muzaffarpur’s recorded history dates back to the rise of Vajji republic, a confederation of eight clans of which the Lichchhavis were the most powerful and influential. Muzaffarpur was successively under the control of Harshavardhan, the Pala kings, Chedi kings, the Sena dynasty, Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq and Sikandar Lodi.

Under the mighty Mughal empire, a separate Subah of Bihar was constituted and Tirhut formed a part of it.

The East India Company got control over whole of Bihar after its victory in the battle of Buxar in 1764.

Muzaffarpur played a prominent role in India’s freedom struggle.

During India’s freedom movement, the first bomb was exploded in Muzaffarpur in 1908. Khudiram Bose, an 18 year-old Bengali revolutionary, was hanged for throwing a bomb at the carriage of Pringle Kennedy who was mistaken for Kingsford, the district judge of Muzaffarpur. The intrepidity of Khudiram Bose and his companion Prafulla Chandra Chaki aroused the nationalist spirit of the country and stirred political awakening.

The visit of Mahatma Gandhi to Muzaffarpur district in December 1920 and again in January 1927 had tremendous political effect in arousing the latent nationalist feelings of the people and the district played a prominent role in the country’s struggle for freedom
