8 INTERVIEW INTERVIEW 9
I tuoi maestri.
pedigree.
Hai work in progress moltissimi progetti di-
versi, altrettanti ne hai realizzati. Frenesia
creativa?
No, puro piacere.
Fa parte di me e mi accompa-
ria ceramica. Perché hai scelto Mutina come
partner?
Ho
creduto nelle capacità e passione di Mutina,
The maestros who have influenced you the
most.
I was fortunate enough to grow alongside
two great teachers of my own choice, Achille
Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti. That is more
than a pedigree.
You’re currently working on a large number
of different projects, and you’ve completed
just as many – can we talk about a creative
frenzy?
No, it’s something I do just for the love of it.
I feel a little like a gardener who takes loving
care of his garden and gets tremendous joy
out of watching his plants, flowers and trees
grow, each at a different rhythm and with diffe-
rent shapes and colours, blending together to
make the whole garden more attractive.
Your creations transmit a sense of enthusia-
sm, of pleasure. Do you enjoy the work you
do?
The creative process is more than just a job,
it’s an integral part of my existence. It’s so-
mething I carry within me, together with the
other most important things in my life: my fa-
mily, friends, books, art, travels. It’s a part of
the whole that is me.
This is the first time you’ve taken on a
project involving ceramics. What made you
choose Mutina as a partner?

Come nasce Déchirer?
Sono molto interessata a lavorare su formati
di grandi dimensioni come moduli di cemento
e forme inusuali come gli esagoni. E allo stes-
strappate.
L’ambientazione ideale per la collezione?
Mi riesce facile pensare l’utilizzo in luoghi
riali come il cemento.
Il progetto futuro.
Una casa-studio-laboratorio.
What won me over was the gentle determina-
tion with which they approached me. I belie-
ved in Mutina’s passion and creativity, the way
I’d believe in an editor eager to develop new
projects and grow.
How did Déchirer come about?
I’m very interested in working on large-size
formats, such as cement modules and unu-
sual shapes such as hexagons. And I’m also
fascinated by the idea of creating an industrial
product in which traces of the layers of histo-
ry are present, a product with a personality.
Bas-reliefs of different heights which are not
so much decorations as the remains of torn
away memories.
What do you see as the ideal setting for the
collection?
I can imagine the pieces in reception are-
as, both public and residential, in which the
product becomes an alternative to materials
such as cement.
A project for the future?
A house-cum-study-cum-workshop.

MASSIMO ORSINI CEO MUTINA
I tuoi maestri.
Amo Mark Rothko e Mies van der Rohe. Li ri-
tengo geni assoluti per come hanno cambiato
la prospettiva delle cose, la percezione dello
spazio, il valore dei materiali.
Hai work in progress moltissimi progetti di-
versi, altrettanti ne hai realizzati. Frenesia
creativa?
Piuttosto la voglia di crescere, di confrontar-
mi con progetti sempre nuovi, con personali-
tà diverse. Sono sempre stato attratto dalla
gente, dai rapporti meravigliosi e fecondi che
instauriamo con le persone che incrociano il
nostro cammino. Questo è ciò che mi fa stare
bene.
Abbiamo
costruito la nuova sede dell’azienda come se
fosse la nostra casa. E’ un luogo che sen-
tiamo nostro, dove lavoriamo bene insieme a
tutti i nostri collaboratori.
nostro progetto d’azienda. E’ un piacere per
noi ritrovarsi ogni mattina e vedere crescere
Mutina.
The maestros who have influenced you the
most.
I love Mark Rothko and Mies van der Rohe. I
believe they are true geniuses, because of the
way in which they changed the perspective on
things, the perception of space, the value of
materials.
You’re currently working on a large number
of different projects, and you’ve completed
just as many – can we talk about a creative
frenzy?
I’d prefer to define it as the desire to grow, to
continue to tackle new types of project, work
with different characters. I’ve always been a
people person; I’m attracted by the marvel-
lous, fertile relationships we have the chance
to establish with the people we encounter in
our journey through life. This is what makes
me feel good – at work and in life in general.
Since 2006 you’ve headed a young company,
but with 30 years’ experience, you’re always
facing new challenges. Do you enjoy the
work you do?
In Mutina, we’re not just four partners, we’re
first and foremost long time friends. We bu-
ilt the new headquarters of the company as
if it were our own home, and that’s how we
feel about it: it’s a place in which we’re happy
to work together with our staff. It’s a bright,
14 INTERVIEW Mutina headquarters INTERVIEW 15
Perché hai scelto Patricia Urquiola come
partner?
ironia, l’energia dirompente. Poi, circa un
anno fa, l’incontro decisivo, faccia a faccia.
Patricia.
Come nasce Déchirer?
mune. E oggi siamo molto contenti del risulta-
to: è andato oltre ogni aspettativa. Ci sembra
In abitazioni residenziali come in grandi spa-
zi pubblici. Ovunque ci sia energia positiva,
ovunque ci siano persone che vogliano stare
bene.
to mio padre, se fosse ancora qui.
open environment, an ever-changing space,
yet at the same time the architecture of the
place has a history, a personality: it’s the very
symbol of what our company’s about. It’s a
pleasure for us to get together every morning
and watch Mutina grow.
What made you choose Patricia Urquiola as
a partner?
We’d been wanting to work with her for a whi-
le. We were impressed by the freshness of
her designs, her irony, her boundless energy.
Then about a year ago we met her face to face
and that was it, she won us over completely.
Together with Giuliana Ricci, Mutina’s brand
manager, we decided to take up a new chal-
lenge, alongside Patricia.
How did Déchirer come about?
We wanted Patricia to feel as free as possible
to interpret ceramics in any way she wanted.
For our part, we took it upon ourselves to offer
her the best technological resources availa-
ble to create exactly the shapes, colours and
material effects she was after. It was a joint
effort, and today we’re delighted with the re-
sult, which is even better than we could have
hoped for. It seems to us that what we’ve
achieved is a perfect synthesis of two souls –
Urquiola and Mutina.
What do you see as the ideal setting for the
collection?
Anywhere imbued with a positive energy,
anywhere people want to feel good, be it a
home or a large public building.
A project for the future?
This is the question I’m sure my father would
have asked me if he were still here. He always
looked impatiently, energetically ahead to the
future. I’m sorry he wasn’t able to remain with
us long enough to get to know Patricia, and
that he isn’t here to share with us such an im-
portant moment for the company that meant
so much to him. Mutina’s next project will be
dedicated entirely to him.

Made in Italy - da Achille Castiglioni a Vico
Magistretti.
residenziali, showroom, alberghi, installazioni
site-specific. All’attività progettuale affianca
quella accademica tenendo corsi e confe-
percorso professionale (Designer of the Year
2006 Wallpaper Award, Elle Deco Internatio-
nal Design Awards, prodotti selezionati per
ADI Design Index e The International Design
Yearbook, per non citarne che alcuni), diverse
personali come la mostra-installazione “Ideal
House” all’IMM di Colonia del 2005, hanno
reso merito alla sua figura di progettista. Par-
gno all’outdoor (ricordiamo Agape, Alessi, Ar-
telano, Axor, B&B Italia, Bart Design, Bisazza,
Bosa, De Padova, De Vecchi, Driade, Fasem,
Flos, Foscarini, Gallotti & Radice, Gandia
Blasco, Kartell, Kettal, Liv’it, LG, MDF Italia,
Molteni, Moroso, Paola Lenti, Rosenthal, San
Lorenzo, Tronconi, Viccarbe).
ner ideale. E con Mutina ha ideato Déchirer,
una collezione che esplora con un materiale
ceramico ispirato alla matericità del cemen-
to le sue diverse possibilità espressive. Filo
passato”, afferma Patricia Urquiola. “Nelle
lastre, sia da pavimento sia da rivestimento,
che compongono la collezione compaiono ele-
menti lisci e decorati, ortogonali ed esagonali
che arrivano ai grandi formati. Come impronte
di stratificazioni precedenti, sovrapposizioni,
contaminazioni. Lievissime, irregolari perce-
Patricia Urquiola, Italian by adop-
tion but, as she likes to define herself, “very
Spanish, an Asturian of Basque origins”, was
born in Oviedo in 1961. After her academic
studies in architecture, first at the Polytechnic
in Madrid and later in Milan, she decided to
remain in Italy to work with the great Masters
of Italian design, from Achille Castiglioni to
Vico Magistretti. In 1996 she was in charge
of Lissoni Associati‘s Design Group, and in
2001 she opened her own studio in Milan,
where projects in different fields sit side by
side: product design, residential architecture,
showrooms, hotels and site-specific instal-
lations. Alongside her design activities she
runs parallel to an academic career, holding
courses and conferences in internationally re-
nowned institutions such as the Domus Aca-
demy in Milan and the Alvar Aalto Academy in
Helsinki. In addition to the many awards and
recognitions that have paved her professional
path (Designer of the Year 2006 Wallpaper
Award, Elle Deco International Design Awards,
products selected for the ADI Design Index
and The International Design Yearbook, to
name but a few), various personal exhibitions
have paid tribute to her design skills, including
the “Ideal House” exhibition-installation at the
IMM in Cologne in 2005. Her design speaks
for itself, furniture and furnishings are desi-
gned for international companies working in
fields from living to tableware, from bedrooms
and bathrooms to exteriors (we may mention
Agape, Alessi, Artelano, Axor, B&B Italia, Bart
Design, Bisazza, Bosa, De Padova, De Vec-
chi, Driade, Fasem, Flos, Foscarini, Gallotti &
Radice, Gandia Blasco, Kartell, Kettal, Liv’it,
LG, MDF Italia, Molteni, Moroso, Paola Lenti,
Rosenthal, San Lorenzo, Tronconi, Viccarbe).
Her innovative approach to each new project
is highly appreciated.
For her first challenge in the ceramics field,
she has chosen Mutina as her ideal partner.
And with Mutina, she has created Déchirer, a
collection that explores its expressive poten-
tial using a ceramic material inspired by the
nature and the consistency of cement. The
guiding thread is the “reference to the sensa-
tions it provokes, with patterns that lie in the
memory of the past”, states Patricia Urquio-
la. “In the floor and wall slabs that make up
the collection, both plain and decorated ele-
ments appear, together with orthogonal and
hexagonal shapes and even large sizes. Like
traces of previous stratifications, overlapping,
contamination, irregular hints of decor and fi-
ligree threads run through the surfaces. The
slight decors are never evident, but they be-
come clear as light and perspective change.
Various heights and patterns create large pa-
nels, once the tiles are laid down”. A game of
contrast and fade-ins that so cleverly express
the philosophy of Déchirer: “to offer a range
of solutions by alternating the composition
with plain and decorated patterns, with sharp-
edged slabs and patchwork designs, offering
the perception of a continuous surface.”

CONTINUA vengono infatti realizzate lastre
di grande formato in gres porcellanato non
smaltato ad impasto omogeneo di ultimissi-
ma generazione. Finite in pressa, con spesso-
re di 12 mm, sono perfettamente rettificate,
monocalibro e modulari.
caratteristiche tecniche superano largamente
i limiti prescritti dalle norme internazionali per
i porcellanati a massima sollecitazione di uti-
lizzo. Déchirer è disponibile in una tavolozza
di cinque colori - bianco, nero, grigio, ecrù e
piombo - e in due textures – decor e neutral.
A highly innovative collection, not only for
the patterns and textures, but also for the
production system. Thanks to the CONTINUA
technology large slabs of the latest genera-
tion unglazed homogeneous porcelain sto-
neware are produced. Press-finished with 12
mm thickness, the tiles are perfectly rectified,
single work size and modular. The colours
and decorations, based on rich and pleasing
ceramic effects, are simply obtained by the
distribution of quality porcelain stoneware mi-
xtures. The technical characteristics are far
superior to the limits required by international
standards for tiles destined for areas of heavy
traffic. Déchirer is available in five colours -
bianco, nero, grigio, ecrù and piombo - and in
two textures – decor and neutral.

in vetro riciclato, viene realizzato attraverso
un innovativo processo produttivo a impat-

all’80% della materia prima per un progetto
in perfetta armonia con l’ambiente.
creando affascinanti riflessi luminosi in pare-

nuovo progetto di Mutina abbina superfici,
