Alexandra Palace Theatre

….an update on progress

Over the past few months, members of the MHFGA have had the opportunity to visit Alexandra Palace Theatre and see the restoration works for themselves. There have been dramatic developments as the restoration phase has moved into the main works, and repairing the historic fabric of the theatre.

The curved balcony was in a very poor state prior to restoration, with numerous holes where the floor had completely given way. It has now been re-raked with a structure of steel beams, each one carefully lifted into place by crane and guided by hand into the correct position. This was slow and painstaking work.

Now that it has been completed, and the crane is out of the way, the entire auditorium floor has been covered in a scaffold birdcage, enabling the team to get up close to the ceiling panel and repair that too. This work is expected to continue for another two months. The interior walls are being cleaned and preserved during this phase of the project too.

We are very grateful for our community’s support for this project. Although access to the restoration site is restricted, we will try to offer everyone who names a seat an opportunity to see the work for themselves – it is a unique opportunity to see this long-

neglected space being brought back to life.

Haringey Council – end to free Green Waste and Bulk Collections

Brian Livingston, our Environment Officer, writes:

My feedback from local residents is that what they really object to is the additional wheelie bin rather than the £75 charge and so many are considering signing up for the sack collection. However the bags are very flimsy and although they may be suitable for leaves and grass cuttings they are not suitable for cuttings, branches etc. Some people are still complaining to the Council and asking why the hessian sacks can’t be used with the £75 charge. One thing for certain is that Haringey’s green waste tonnage will reduce.

Jane Thompson

My husband Roy and I took up residence in Muswell Hill in 2006 and joined the MHFGA shortly afterwards. We have been married for 32 years and renewed our marriage vows last year.

Roy was born in Northamptonshire and graduated from Imperial College, London. I was born in the Caribbean and graduated from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.

We discovered Crouch End and Muswell Hill through our daughter who was in lodgings here while at university in the 1990s. We visited her frequently and fell in love with the place: the politeness of the people, its individuality and green surroundings, not to mention the stunning architecture. To put it mildly, it took our breath away. Muswell Hill, together with its neighbouring areas such as Crouch End, Highgate and Hampstead, are something to die for – the beautiful shops, restaurants, green spaces and long walks are exactly our sentiment and, in our view, that’s how our living environment must be.

After university our daughter decided to live in London (we were in East Sussex at the time). As caring parents, very particular where our children reside, coupled with the extortionate rents in London, we purchased a studio flat in Muswell Hill where she would be able to live. Our daughter has since married and runs her own media business, and continues to live in Muswell Hill to this day.

Our son, after he graduated from university in London, took over the studio flat from his sister. He met his fiancée while living there, got married and they purchased their first home together in Palmers Green. We have two lovely grandsons.

Roy worked in the computer field for 42 years before retiring, and we met while he was working for an American bank in the city. I myself worked in local government for 32 years, initially as a School Welfare Officer, and then qualified as a Social Worker in 1985. I worked in that field until my retirement, but remain a member of the British Association of Social Workers. My strong passion and commitment to social justice, in particular the welfare of young people, led to me working in a voluntary capacity for 14 years in youth services and undertaking a short course at Brunel University in Youth and Community Work. Our careers took us to various parts of the UK, including East Sussex and Scotland. Wherever we have lived, we have always taken an interest in the community around us. We are keen walkers and frequently meet new people on our walks. We are also passionate about gardening and are members of the RHS.

Our experience of Muswell Hill has been that it is a good area to live in, with lots of good people, but we need groups like the MHFGA to keep it that way and to address issues as they arise.

Local Plan

Haringey’s Local Plan Strategic Policies was adopted by the council on 24 July 2017. The purpose of the document is to set out how Haringey should develop by 2026 and its strategy for achieving that vision including high-level strategic policies used in determining planning applications. More detail relevant to planning applications is to be found in the Development Management DPD. Residential development is perhaps of most interest to our members and here are three bullet points: • For the first time there is a detailed policy regarding

basement extensions. • There is a policy which states that full width rear extensions are not normally considered acceptable. • The construction of front dormers is something which some of our members feel very strongly about and here is the relevant policy: Extensions to the roof, such as dormer windows, should be restricted to the rear and their size, location and design should be such that they appear subordinate on the roof. Front dormers would not normally be permitted unless they are already part of the established local character and sensitively designed to contribute positively to the roofscape.

All the relevant documents can be found on the website thus providing an invaluable source of material to our members if they should need to object to the intentions of a neighbour. Of course, in an ideal world all applications would be drawn up to respect rather than to overstep the boundaries set out in the policies. The section on shopfronts provides plenty of useful wording to object to inappropriate new shopfronts.

Our soup kitchen started in February 1994 in response to several people asking for food following the worship services. It is located and administered at the Muswell Hill Baptist Church and is also staffed by volunteers from several local churches, other faith groups and the wider community.

We are open five evenings a week, Sunday to Thursday from 7.45-8.30pm (Sundays 5.00-6.00pm). We normally serve a two course meal to about 40 people each night.

We are open to all who need our meals. Some but not all of our guests are homeless but they all have needs that cause them to come for the shared meal together. Their age range is from young adults to pensioners. We do not provide any counselling services but we do offer friendship, spiritual support and encouragement toward all the appropriate professional services available.

MHFGA member Dr Lucy Gaster also appreciates the work that the Association does: “Best wishes and congratulations on all your hard work, it is always good to be kept up to date about local happenings”.

Ben the gum painter

Local resident and famed gum painter, Ben Wilson, was born in Cambridge and grew up in Barnet. He has lived in Muswell Hill for 25 years and is a familiar face in the area. His tiny paintings on the discarded gum which litters our streets are his way of working with the environment and transforming it in a delightful way.

Ben attended an Arts Foundation course at Middlesex University and was offered places at various art colleges but preferred to develop his skills in his own individual style. The university supported him to work in its grounds. He began with wood sculpture, using fallen wood, and then moved on to gum painting. As he paints on existing ‘litter’ he is not technically inflicting criminal damage but transforming a negative action into a positive result.

Ben has a huge portfolio of requests from passers-by who may ask for dedications, declarations of love, and a variety of messages personal to them. He tries to fulfil them all. This is the main impetus for his work, the fact that he is relating both to people and his environment and providing social commentary. His art attracts a lot of interest locally, nationally and internationally – his work can be seen all over the world. His fondness for Muswell Hill lies in the village atmosphere, the variety of people he meets on the street, the individual shops, the nearby woodlands and the panoramic views over London, a city he loves.

There is a wealth of information about Ben, including images and videos, on the internet – just search for Ben Wilson chewing gum man! But also look carefully next time you are rushing around shopping or visiting the bank. Take a moment to absorb and enjoy the miniature world that Ben has created for us all.

Sorbet

Established in 2005 in South Africa, Sorbet, a family-run business, is the country’s leading beauty salon franchise that delivers on quality, service and heart. The chain boasts over 200 stores across South Africa. In 2015, Sorbet opened the doors to its first Sorbet Salon in Muswell Hill. We also have stores in Crouch End, Temple Fortune, East Finchley and Mill Hill.

Ian Fuhr, CEO and Founder of the Sorbet Brand, was driven by the excitement of building a brand in a new and unfamiliar territory. “I noticed a couple of years ago that, much like the South African beauty market, the English market is highly fragmented and has no branded chains of any substance like Sorbet. There was a gap in the market and during research I found that many people were frustrated by the quality of beauty treatments they had on offer in the UK. It is a challenging journey and a big investment, launching in the UK, but we feel the opportunity lies in standards. We want to raise the bar by improving on the UK standards, and in so doing, establish the credibility of the Sorbet brand”.

Guests at Sorbet can expect a high quality of service in a hygienic environment, with quality products and most importantly, with friendly staff. What makes them a consumer favourite is the overall experience the guest receives: the products on offer, the rewards programme, the people ethos, the value for money, the skilled therapists and nail technicians, the monthly promotions and the convenience of it all. Plus, if guests are unhappy with their treatments, they don’t have to pay. We have a huge sign in the front of the store telling our guests this, which is very unusual in retail businesses. We also accept all returned products and we refund and give complimentary treatments happily. We would much rather return products and give free treatments, than lose our guests’ business.

Broadway Pharmacy

Broadway Pharmacy, an independent family-run business, is situated at an easily accessible location on Muswell Hill Broadway. We are a husband and wife team, both pharmacists who have worked in the industry for over 30 years, primarily within the vicinity of Muswell Hill and Crouch End. The pharmacy operates under the management of our son, who has helped us develop the business to new heights.

Since we took over from the previous owners in January 2010, we have conducted a full re-fit of the premises, thus enabling us to provide a range of services. These include a private travel clinic, flu vaccinations and food intolerance testing, as well as being a designated yellow fever centre. We also have a chiropodist and osteopath who practise on-site.

The pharmacy offers an efficient prescription pick-up service from the surrounding GP surgeries, with whom we maintain a close, professional working relationship.

We are a provider of leading brands such as La Roche-Posay, Phyto, Bioderma, Mustela, Frezyderm and Avene. We take great pride in offering a friendly, smooth service, aided by the assurance that all employees regularly attend training courses to broaden their knowledge and promote the latest products on the market.

We sincerely hope that your first impression is that of a community pharmacy which has a ‘family feel’ with close-knit relationships amongst its employees. We will continue our offering of “a personal touch to your healthcare”.

Finally, thank you for supporting us, Your Local Independent Pharmacy.

Electric charging point problems

Frustrated users are finding that they are not able to use their Source London membership cards to charge their electric cars in the Summerland Gardens car park. We are told that this is because the machines are not compatible with the new operating system run by BluePoint London (BPL). Haringey council are in contact with BPL who have promised to upgrade, fix or replace defective charging points in the borough. When this is completed the cards should work. Meanwhile membership cards will still work on any new Source London charging machines elsewhere in London.

The council is investigating the use of lamp column charging infrastructure and are hoping to install a few as a trial during this financial year. They are also planning to install rapid charging points which will allow drivers to charge their vehicles within thirty

minutes, one of which is to be in the Summerland Gardens car park

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Fortis Green Zebra Crossing

I wrote to the Council on behalf of the Association as follows:

Some years ago we campaigned for a new zebra crossing of Fortis Green between Eastern Road and Fortis Green Avenue. This was not successful at the time but the time has come to renew this request. Although there are pedestrian refuges at the junctions with Fortis Green Avenue and Midhurst Avenue, there is no protected crossing between Collingwood Avenue and Summerland Avenue, a distance of about 500 metres. The Summerland Avenue crossing was installed by LB Barnet after a fatal accident. We would hope that we do not have to wait for another fatality to occur before you agree to install a zebra crossing here.

The council responded by saying that there are no funds available for this work until at least March 2018. We plan to try again then. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Paying for car parking

Haringey have recently changed their method of paying for parking to a PayByPhone system, eliminating the possibility of paying with coins. This has caused a serious problem for many users, particularly elderly people and others who don’t have a mobile phone or find using it for the proposed purpose too difficult. There are reports of people in Muswell Hill Marks and Spencer’s car park literally breaking down in tears and of an elderly man worriedly asking for leniency from a traffic warden (who I'm told, was very understanding). It is possible to pay by cash at a designated shop. However most people will expect to be able to pay to park at the machine or at least in the immediate vicinity. A shop might be several streets away. There is also the danger that, even if the person knows where the shop is and manages to reach it, the car will already have been ticketed.

We have appealed to Haringey to find an alternative system, such as paying by credit or debit card, as is in operation in other places. There has so far been no response from Haringey.

‘A treasure trove ... highly recommended’ - comment from a local resident.

Have you some furniture in reasonable condition that you no longer want? We can collect. Are you looking for good quality affordable items for a room or flat? Or perhaps you’re after a one-off piece of ‘Upcycling’? Come and visit us at 4, Queens Parade Close, N11 3FY (Tel 020 8361 6802) or look at our latest stock here: http://www.facebook.com/barnetfurniturecentre.

Barnet Furniture Centre (BFC – Charity No 1140541) opened in 2011. Since then we’ve recycled about 600 tons of furniture and household items which might otherwise have ended up in landfill. ‘About 600 tons’ doesn’t mean much; but imagine a continuous terrace of three-bedroom houses on both sides of the road, from The Woodman at Archway, through Muswell Hill, and all the way to Friern Barnet; then imagine all the contents from all those houses, and you ’ll get some idea.

We offer two-tier prices, the lower price for those on benefits. We also operate a voucher scheme for needy tenants of local housing services. There’s a small professional management team, but we rely greatly on our wonderful volunteers, many from local ‘Help-to-Work’ schemes. Since 2011 several of those have progressed to part-time or even full-time jobs at BFC or elsewhere.

If you have skills in carpentry, upholstery, painting, design etc, or can commit a few hours in preparation such as sanding, you might be interested in finding out about our Upcycling team.

With the Haringey Restore Community Project now sadly defunct, BFC is your nearest reuse /recycling charity. We’re immensely proud of our record to date, and look forward to your joining our many existing customers from Haringey.

http://www.barnetfurniturecentre.org. Open 9am-5pm Mon-Sat. Closed Sundays/Bank Holidays. Stephen Brice, Chair of BFC
